To view or read fault codes in the 1998-2004 Opel Astra H CDTI or Z16XER, resort to computer diagnostics:
- A PC with installed software to determine the cause and decipher the information is connected to the OBD connector. The Opel manufacturer installs this block in the vehicle interior on cars with 1.3, 1.6 and 1.8 Z18XER engines. It can be found under the plastic cover near the parking brake lever. To connect and read data, a special cable with an appropriate interface is used.
- The software is starting.
- The button is pressed to start checking the Opel Astra N with the GTC or XER engine. If necessary, the user selects the body type (sedan, station wagon or hatchback), as well as the engine (gasoline or diesel).
- The verification process begins. After its completion, a description of the problems in the operation of the gasoline or diesel power unit is displayed on the computer screen. Based on the errors, a troubleshooting method is selected. Depending on the program, the utility can show the operating parameters of the machine, including the on-board voltage.
To find problems in the operation of an Opel Astra N car, you can use a self-diagnosis method using pedals and the ignition system.
On a car with a manual or robotic gearbox
For a car with a manual gearbox, the check is performed as follows:
- The brake and gas pedals are depressed simultaneously. The ignition is turned off.
- The key is inserted into the lock and scrolled to the “ACC” position. This is required to activate the ignition system. The power unit does not start.
- On the instrument panel of an Astra 2008 or another year of production, the control unit will show faults in the form of numbers. They must be decrypted to obtain information about the error. The data is displayed on a display showing the vehicle's mileage.
On cars with automatic transmission
For cars with automatic transmission, ESP error codes are read as follows:
- The key is inserted into the lock and the ignition is activated. The engine does not start.
- The brake pedal is depressed. While it is held, the user must move the transmission selector to “D” mode.
- The ignition is turned off, the foot is removed from the pedal.
- Then the brake and gas are released simultaneously. At the same time, the car owner turns on the ignition.
- Six-digit combinations of faults should appear on the dashboard.
When carrying out self-diagnosis of an Opel Astra with an automatic transmission, the gas pedal is pressed all the way, and the brake must be pressed with medium force.
Diagnostic procedure for Opel Astra H
Not every driver has at his disposal a scanner that allows him to quickly obtain all the information regarding vehicle system malfunctions. To display all errors on the dashboard display, the car owner needs to perform basic steps to display a list of errors without the use of third-party devices.
For Opel Astra H with manual transmission:
- Press the accelerator and brake pedal.
- Wait a few seconds and then start the car engine.
- Without releasing both pedals, wait until the display shows a six-digit number.
For Opel Astra H with automatic transmission, the procedure is slightly different:
- Turn the ignition key to the on position.
- Press the brake pedal with moderate force.
- Set the gearbox selector to “Drive” mode.
- Turn off the ignition by turning the key and release the pedal.
- Then simultaneously press the brake and gas pedals and start the engine.
If the control unit contains several error combinations, they will be displayed one after another. If the computer has not recorded any errors, six zeros will flash on the display. The advantage of this method is accessibility and saving money on diagnostic devices. But this method is somewhat complicated and requires a lot of time. The control panel does not provide decoding of the codes, which means that the owner of the Opel Astra H 1.3, 1.6, 1.8 must independently look for answers to all questions that arise.

Thank you! Today I tried to diagnose my car, I have a 93 Astra F. I closed contacts a and b and turned the ignition, but nothing happened, the cherished light did not light up or blink, while driving after a while my abs light came on, so I decided to diagnose it (before that the brakes were weak, it was as if there was air in there) and the diagnostics began The abs was blinking, after the light went out I took off the brand, a minute later I put it back on, the brakes returned to normal as if I had pumped them, but the abs light came on again! Question. Why does the abs light come on again? As for the fact that the brake pedal has become stronger (before this it felt like there was air in it), is this normal? Why didn’t the engine diagnostics occur when contacts a and b were closed?
Thank you in advance, I will wait for your answer! ————————-

You must press the gas and brake pedals at the same time, turn the ignition key but do not start the engine, wait after these procedures, the instrument panel display will display numbers, if all are zeros, then everything is fine, there are no errors, if there are errors, they will be displayed in turn, a total of six numbers are displayed, the decoding of errors can be found online

Decoding Opel errors
There are 5 characters in total:
The first one indicates the area where the problem is:
- B — Body elements (central locking, window control mechanism, etc.)
- C — Chassis and suspension of the car;
- P - Control module for electrical circuits, motor, sensors and transmission;
- U- All electronic modules
The second will tell you about the class of fault:
- A symbol that is common to all OBD-2;
- 1-2 are error categories;
- Spare;
The third speaks directly about the type of problem itself:
- 1-2 is fuel injection and supply;
- 3 - problem with ignition;
- 4 - auxiliary components and mechanisms do not work correctly or do not work;
- 5 — failure of various sensors;
- 6 - electronics or electrical faulty;
- 7 - failure of the module responsible for controlling the gearbox;
- 9 and 0 are left as reserve;
- 4-5 characters are the serial number of the breakdown.
Of course, it’s not easy to figure it out right away, but, in fact, there’s nothing complicated. For a quicker understanding, let's look at an example.
An example of an engine error in an Opel Astra and any other of the listed models
Let's study the value of P1125 - this set of numbers indicates that the breakdown has occurred in the throttle sensor. In such situations, it is common to first check to see if the controller assembly is stuck in one of the positions. Then they begin more serious diagnostics.
Another option, Opel engine error number P1606, as it becomes clear, something happened to the detonation controller.
How to make it easier to decipher errors that can be found in Opel?
The easiest way is to rewrite the number or, using a smartphone, immediately find any foreign or domestic site that has a special calculator that will provide accurate information about what malfunction is occurring and how to fix it. After all faults have been eliminated, the numerical value should appear as five zeros.

The photo shows examples of error codes in the Opel Astra.
Malfunctions in the functioning of the transmission system
Malfunctions in the functioning of the intake air temperature detection controller
Malfunction in the exhaust camshaft timing system
Everything is lost?
Early car models equipped with electronic engine and transmission control systems actually made it possible to obtain fault codes through simple manipulations. This made it possible, with proper luck and experience, to determine the cause of the breakdown right on the road. But gradually car manufacturers began to abandon this type of diagnostics.
There are several reasons for this. There are two main ones. Firstly, it is sometimes simply impossible to repair complicated electronic components using improvised means. Secondly, managers of automobile companies came to the conclusion that, against the backdrop of declining sales, it was stupid to waste money that could be earned on maintenance. Let the client go to a service center, where the codes will be read to him and the car will be repaired.
Owners of the Opel Astra H will have to be disappointed. Authoritative sources clearly state that access to fault codes is possible only after connecting diagnostic equipment through a special connector. Magical manipulation of the pedals will not help here. Moreover, the real fault codes of this car are not six-digit, as displayed on the instrument panel, but consist of one letter and four numbers. The notorious error 170000 Opel Astra N is not in the list of codes.
Fault table

Frequently asked questions about Opel Astra auto diagnostics via a computer or smartphone:
Let's look at the most popular questions related to Astra diagnostics.
Suitable adapters, cables and programs for service
Important:
Early Opel vehicles are equipped with an ALDL service socket. For connection with modern scanners, a special adapter cable is recommended - OPEL 10 Pin to OBD2. The cord will allow you to match the old block with the diagnostic equipment.
Is it possible to detect problems in a car without specialized systems?
For Opel Astra F owners, the answer is yes! The designers have provided a self-diagnosis system for vehicle components. And anyone can carry out the so-called “paperclip” diagnostics of their car.
Be sure to check out:
Diagnostic connectors installed in the Opel Astra F have two types:
- The 10-pin connector was installed until 1996;
- The 16-pin slot was installed after 1996.
The figure below shows the pinout of the 10-pin diagnostic connector for the Opel Astra F.
This figure shows the pinout of the 16-pin connector.
The slot for connection or self-diagnosis is located in the fuse box, under the steering wheel on the right.
How to reset errors?
After this, the dimensions remain on only on one side, “indicated by the turn signal.” After this, the wipers clean the glass at a specified interval.
The interval is adjustable from 2 to 15 seconds. The standard interval is 4 seconds.
Errors in a car have different statuses, so even if they are present, the Check Engine indicator may not light up. So to speak, in normal mode, this requires a dealer Tech 2 scanner.
What if you don’t have it at hand or don’t want to just go to the dealer and waste money and time? For this, the manufacturer has provided a manual mode. Simultaneously depress the gas and brake pedals and hold them. Only THEN insert the key into the ignition. Turn on the ignition but do not start the car!
Opel Astra. How to pay off a CHECK. Step three.
Insert the key into the ignition switch. We turn on the ignition and do not start the engine!
Now press the gas pedal and brake pedal together and hold. We wait a few seconds, holding the pedals, until the message appears. If everything is done correctly, then the message “ECN” error code number and error codes will be displayed at the mileage location.
When pressing the pedals, it is important that the limit switches work, so we press the brake with medium force, and press the gas “to the floor” until it clicks. P Check the boost pressure valve voltage.
P Malfunction of the crankshaft sensor. We discard the last 2 in this case. If we receive an error, first add zero, then discard the last 2 digits.
We get the error Р Р Check the IPC generator. There may be a problem with the L lamp control circuit. One of the signs of a malfunction is that the generator lamp may suddenly light up when the engine is turned on and also suddenly go out.
We discard the last 2 digits; in the first case, we first add 0, and then discard 03 and P, respectively. Malfunction of valve timing adjustment.
We discard the last two, we get the error Р Р Problems with the clutch drive position control.

Which scanner is better for diagnostics?
How to check the fuel pressure regulator
What program should I use to diagnose Opel Zafira A?
Pneumotester
To troubleshoot your car, it is useful to look at the fault codes (errors). But there are not always scanners at hand with which you can read them.
You can determine the presence of fault codes (errors) as follows:
Insert and turn the ignition key to the second position.
The control lamp (machine with a key) should go out after a few seconds.
If the control lamp does not go out, then errors are present.
Error Definition
The procedure is standard and works the same on all cars. Diagnostics is carried out in several steps:
1. With the car engine turned off, simultaneously press the gas and brake pedals all the way, 2. Turn the ignition key to position 2 (without starting the engine). 3. If everything was done correctly, the message ECN 059761
(error code number) in the place where the vehicle mileage is shown. If instead of 059761 there are zeros, there are no errors, the system is operating normally.
How to reset the error yourself
If you want to try to reset the error yourself, there are several options. They are suitable for cases when the error is faulty, that is, it does not have a technical malfunction. Resetting faulty errors does not make sense, since they will light up again later and will remain on until the problem is resolved.
1. Removing the battery terminal for 5-10 minutes
. It only helps if the error is a system glitch. If this does not help, then the car records the problem in memory during the test and it cannot be reset by simply turning off the power - the record is stored in a non-volatile section of the computer’s memory.
2. 20 engine starts
. The principle is the same.
3. Buying an OBD II adapter
for your car model.
Resetting service intervals
On the mileage display, depending on its value (usually around 8000-10000 km), the inscription InSP appears.
IsP message on panel
This is an indication of the time until service maintenance. How to reset it? Please note that resetting the maintenance interval must be performed correctly to avoid errors in the operation of the vehicle.
- Turn off the ignition.
- After the daily mileage is displayed on the display, press the “reset” button.
- While holding reset, turn on the ignition. Note: The reset button must be held for at least 10 seconds. The screen will first display a flashing InSP indication, then the maximum mileage.
- When the inscriptions stop flashing, it indicates that the maintenance interval has been reset to its initial state.

If the low beam bulb has burned out, you can change it yourself. The only thing is that it is extremely difficult to snap the cover onto the headlight all the way. Removing the headlights involves removing the bumper.
And when I try to start there are some sounds similar to a pump pumping fluid. I opened the hood without turning off the ignition and tried to localize the source of the sounds, but failed. I got into the car without closing the hood, turned the ignition off and on again - it started up with N flashing and first gear.
Okay, I decided to go to the service station after work and try to get to work this way. But after 50 meters the box fell into F, an icon of a broken car appeared on the panel; before that it did not turn on with an error F, as well as an oil and battery icon.

I called a friend to take me to work along the way, and while I was waiting I decided to try to drive the car back into the yard to its place. Again, by some strange miracle, I started it, drove for meters, the car roared at times, periodically showed F, then A again, and drove normally. The oil, battery and broken car indicators on the panel also switched on and off.
OPEL ASTRA H errors. READING ERROR CODES. OPEL ASTRA H diagnostics.
At the same time, when it was possible to start the car, the starter slipped very much, making a characteristic sound. Arriving at work remotely, I have a test monitoring unit, from work, you can use it to check the physical characteristics of the car, some checked the voltage in the network - from 12 to 14V throughout the last days, including today's attempts to drive, so the battery is apparently dead , disappears.
I understand that it is almost impossible to determine without an optical committee, but I would still like to understand the direction of the search 2 Who can recommend good service stations that deal with EasyTronic manual Opel transmissions in St. Petersburg, preferably in Kupchino, so that the prices do not bite and it is not scary to leave the car overnight. I’m not asking you to raise it to the top, but I’ll leave 2 comments for the minuses, in case anyone thinks that there are too many pluses for the post.
