Shape and dimensions
All front-wheel drive Lada cars are similar to each other. Manual transmission 2108 appeared on models 2108, 2109 and 21099. The Kalina’s torque is about 120-148 Nm, the G8’s is 79-186 Nm. The 2108-2112 transmission was designed for higher torque. Starting from 2113 to “Kalina” and “Grants” the torque dropped and the gearbox became a little weaker.

To replace the reed switch located in the “knob” of the manual transmission handle, you will need a 13th key and a flat-head screwdriver with a sharp end. To get to the switch, you need to remove the top cover from the handle; this can be done using a screwdriver.

- unscrew the nut securing the handle (thirteen wrench), it is even more convenient to dismantle the parts using a 13 mm socket and a wrench;
- after the nut is removed, dismantle the handle itself by turning it counterclockwise;
- remove the dermantine casing, disconnect the plug from the wires that supply power to the solenoid, remove the reed switch;

The input shaft 29 (Fig. 5.2) of the gearbox is made in the form of a block of drive gears, which are in constant engagement with the driven gears of all forward gears. The secondary shaft 25 is hollow, with a removable drive gear 3 of the main gear. On the secondary shaft of the gearbox there are driven gears 16, 18, 19, 21, 23 and synchronizers 17, 20, 24 for forward gears. Front bearings 4, 31 roller shafts, rear 22, 28 - ball. The differential is two-satellite. The preload in the differential bearings is adjusted by selecting the thickness of the ring 13. The driven gear 12 of the main gear is attached to the differential box flange. A master ring 7 of the magnetoelectric speed sensor is installed on one of the axles of the differential box.
The gearbox control drive consists of gear shift lever 11 (Fig. 5.3), a ball joint, rod 10 and a gear selection mechanism (installed in the gearbox housing).
The reverse gear lock is controlled by a solenoid mounted on the gearbox housing, which, in turn, is controlled by switch 13 mounted on gear shift lever 11.
On a Lada Kalina car, the gear selection mechanism is made as a separate unit and is attached to the plane of the clutch housing inside the gearbox.

Primary and secondary shafts
The gearbox has a two-shaft design. Each gear, except reverse, has synchronizers. The mechanism housing is composite and consists of a clutch housing, gearbox housing, and rear cover. Crankcase parts are made by casting from light aluminum alloys. Instead of gaskets between the housing elements, the manufacturer uses a sealant gasket. A magnet is installed in the holes of the oil filler plug, which is designed to trap debris.
A block of drive gears is installed on the primary shaft of the mechanism, which are constantly engaged with the driven gears of the forward gears. The secondary shaft is made hollow. Due to the hollow structure, oil enters the operating area of the driven gears. A removable main gear gear is installed on the secondary shaft - the drive gear. Driven gears and synchronizers are also mounted on the secondary shaft.
The shafts rotate on roller and ball bearings. The former are installed at the front, and the latter at the rear. Bearings are securely fixed on each shaft. Radial clearances for the front bearings are no more than 0.07 mm, and for the rear ones - 0.04 mm. For lubrication, an oil intake is used, which supplies oil to the secondary shaft.
The driven gear in the Kalina gearbox is mounted on the flange of the two-satellite differential box. The gearbox housing has a breather - it is located on top.

How to replace the solenoid switch
The solenoid may become sour in the open position; in some cases, lightly tapping its body helps. It is typical that sticking occurs when the car is standing on a steep incline. Breakdowns also happen on the road, and if the sensor fails and it is impossible to engage reverse gear, you can temporarily unscrew it a little from the box (about 7 turns), then the fault will appear. But you need to understand that this is a temporary measure; when the solenoid fails, it needs to be replaced.

If we recall the design and principle of operation of VAZ gearboxes for the Samara series, then the shift mechanism in them was from below and immersed in an oil bath. At the bottom of the gearbox, clamps for the fork and reverse gear rod, a reverse sensor, and a gear selection seal were installed - each element was a potential source of oil leakage. The new switching mechanism in the VAZ-1119 (“Kalina”) is a special separate unit. It can be installed and removed without the need to disassemble the gearbox. This is an excellent solution and is useful not only for fast and cheap production, which is also appreciated by repairmen. Now repairing the switching mechanism has become much easier. Thanks to the use of a selector grid, all gears are switched on much more accurately. The mechanism also has a lock against engaging reverse gear - reverse gear is only available from neutral.
The icing on the cake, or rather in the box, is the special selector plate. It was she who influenced the accuracy of gear shifting. The plate replaced the previously standard locking and return springs. To develop the plate, it took a long time to analyze the work of a person with a gearbox selector. The force on the lever was calculated using a special software package.
Oil
With the introduction of the new box, the amount of oil also changed. Thus, for the VAZ-2181 gearbox, the oil volume decreased by 30%. The requirements for oil have also changed - AvtoVAZ switched from mineral to synthetic gear oils. This applies to both old gearbox models and new ones. The manufacturer pours oil into the gearbox and writes in the instructions that it will last for 5 years or for the entire life of the gearbox. But in reality it needs to be changed.
The oil life of the Kalina gearbox is approximately 30 thousand km. You can choose any of the domestic transmission products as gearbox oil. Thus, domestic car enthusiasts speak well of the products of Lukoil and Rosneft. You can also purchase imported oils - for example from Zic. The box will say “thank you” for this.

- The next step is to unscrew and remove the starter, which also makes it difficult to get to the box. Now jack up the car and remove the front wheels.
- After removing the wheels, unhook the left drive. Now you need to hang the engine on a hydraulic jack. Remove the right drive. Be sure to insert the differential lock plug to prevent the planetary gear from flying out. In the case of a cable box, loosen the fastenings slightly so that the cable drives can be disconnected from above.
- Having unhooked the rocker arm from the box (by loosening the clamp), disconnect the torque rod. More precisely, you need to remove the part that is closer to the gearbox driveshaft.
- Hang the box on a hydraulic foot or special support. A “cushion” is screwed next to the cardan - unscrew it from both the body and the transmission, it is secured with bolts from the end side. Then you can easily crawl to the right front drive, which needs to be removed.
- To remove the box from the engine, unscrew the 4 bolts around its perimeter.
- The box is free. All that remains is to carefully lower her to the ground, pulling her out from under the car. If dismantling is carried out in a pit, then ask your partner for help to remove the gearbox without dropping it.

What automatic transmissions are installed on Kalina?

In addition to manual transmission and AMT, the Lada Kalina has a Jatco gearbox. This is a fairly old hydraulic automatic machine from the manufacturer Jatko. This box has the index JF414E. This automatic transmission contains all the classic modes that are found on 4-speed gearboxes:

The manufacturer equips its creation with a fairly modern automatic transmission. This gearbox device is used only with the 1.6-liter 16-valve version of the engine.
Note that all modifications that the manufacturer has equipped with an automatic transmission have a reduced ground clearance. Also, the engine sump in this version is covered from below with an aluminum protective shield.
The gearbox is characterized by its own features, which allow the LADA Kalina car to have increased fuel consumption and slightly reduced dynamics. The unit, in comparison with the mechanical version, has more mass, which also provokes an increase in fuel consumption and the total weight of the model.
Mechanical transmissions of LADA Kalina have a cable-type shift mechanism. When the owner notices a loss of clarity during switching moments, the condition of the scenes should be immediately assessed. Let us note one more important problem. It consists in the fact that when the engine speed reaches 3000 per minute, the effect of the lever rattling occurs. Here you will need to resort to shortening the sleeve. This measure will reduce the size of the gap, after which the handle will “leave the habit” of dangling. Replacing the gear selection mechanism
Another reason why reverse gear may not engage is a malfunction of the gear selection mechanism. As a rule, the defect occurs due to a broken spring in this unit. To fix the problem in this case, you have to remove and disassemble the gearbox; the work turns out to be labor-intensive and takes a lot of time. To get to the mechanism, we perform the following operations (we will list only the most basic):
Of course, only the spring in the mechanism can be replaced, but this is provided that the parts in it are not worn out. Practice shows that it is easier and more reasonable to install a new part in the assembly - there is no guarantee that the repaired mechanism will not present any “surprises”, and it is relatively inexpensive. It should be noted that if the “selection” spring is broken, in some cases it is still possible to turn on the reverse speed, but always with great difficulty.
How does the automatic transmission behave?
Many users note in their reviews that it makes no sense to get used to an outdated, albeit automatic, modification of the gearbox if it does not differ much in its operation from the AMT. But the Jatko box has a lot of advantages. Firstly, it shifts smoother, although slower than a modern AMT. Secondly, this is a completely imported unit. However, it is more expensive and requires an additional cooling system and original wheel drives during installation. For comparison: AMT consists of almost 80% domestic parts. As a result, the price of the Lada Kalina automatic increases by at least 25 thousand rubles.
The main problem with the Jatco automatic transmission is fuel consumption. In the city in the off-season, taking into account traffic jams, slipping, and frequent stops, the automatic transmission will “eat up” from 11.5 to 12.5 liters per hundred kilometers, depending on driving style. Under similar conditions, a car with AMT consumes about 8.5 l/100 km.
Which gearbox is better in different conditions?
You need to understand the conditions in which the car is used. Based on this, you will choose a Kalina with one transmission or another. Even the choice between an automatic or robotic Lada Kalina will depend on the conditions of the trip, although these boxes are very similar.
For a relaxing ride
For a calm and measured ride, when you don’t particularly want to drive with manual gear selection, and trips are limited to urban conditions on normal roads, choose AMT.
It's inconvenient to constantly keep the clutch pedal ready when you're stuck in a miles-long traffic jam. But paying extra for a machine is also not always justified. Fuel consumption using such a box is lower than that of a hydraulic automatic transmission, but slightly higher than that of a manual transmission.
