The front part of the cabin is no different from the three-door interior. The usual Zhiguli seating position, the same panel, seats and controls. But for the rear passengers it’s a real holiday. I'm not even talking about the convenience of getting into the second row - climbing through your own door is much more comfortable than through the narrow opening between the B-pillar and the reclined front seat. There is more than enough space in the back of the five-door. Instead of a Nivov sofa designed for two, there is a modernized seat from a VAZ-2109. Not business class, but the seating is quite comfortable. And the trunk is much larger, almost twice as big.
Fastening and materials
Fastening to the arches with four M8 bolts; when I get another “ant” arch (it will be in the middle of the trunk), two more bolts will be added. And when I overcome my laziness, I’ll insert two more bolts into the middle of each arc... But that’s later, somehow...
Now for the materials: professional pipe 20x20x2 22.5 m at a price of 45 r/m, 2.5 mm electrodes for carbon steels pack 100 r, 3 discs for an angle grinder, two 2 mm thick (for cutting), and one thick 4 mm (for processing seams ), reinforcement mesh with a cell 40x40, strips of 2m x 50cm, 3 pieces for 115 rubles (rod thickness is about 3 mm), a piece of sheet 2 mm thick 20 cm x 110 cm - found for free, enamel primer for metal 1 l 195 r, 2 brushes for 30 r, four M8 bolts with washers and nuts - about 50 r. The total cost was about 1800 rubles. But the weight went beyond what was planned for the sake of strength - about 20-25 kg... As for the time - it turned out to be 5 days, 2 hours each. If I had purchased all the materials at once and could afford to work in the garage all day, I could have easily completed it in one working day. And so I had to constantly run back and forth, assemble, disassemble the tool, and so on. On the other hand, I now understand why sellers of factory or similar homemade trunks charge so much money. Of course there is a lot of hassle with work...
Now about what can be attached to the trunk - it’s clear that the right place is for a hi-jack, a shovel, a canister and a spare tire. Over time, again, the fasteners for all this will be installed in the finished structure. In the meantime, I only installed the branch guards, because I was tired of getting branches on the windshield - it’s annoying.
For the branch guards, a 4 mm cable, M10 eye nuts and bolts, rope supports and cable clamps are used, the amount for everything is about 700 rubles. The general view can be seen in the picture:

The only disappointment with the purchase is the rather small fuel tank. The mixed cycle consumes 12 liters. Dissatisfied. Until I drove 2,000 km, the car’s fuel consumption was generally 14.5 liters. “Niva’s” appetite is indescribable.
It’s winter outside and you can save up money for the next repair, but with my “mutant” this is impossible. It spends 22 liters when driving through a snowy city. So you can become bankrupt. And with mileage, fuel consumption will only increase, I think. In general, I do not recommend taking the carburetor version. What fuel consumption is considered normal for Niva 2121? Who knows?
If you believe the passport data, in the city the fuel consumption of a car should be strictly 12 liters per 100 km. But who will believe this data? What's the point of them? I checked. Its gluttony indicator exceeds the indicated one by as much as 2 liters.
Manufacturing
The goal is to weld a trunk that would be attached to the usual “ant” trunk bars, be removable, and, most importantly, weight and strength. Through cunning (I wanted to write “simple” - but this is not true) strength calculations, a certain design was developed, which theoretically (haven’t tested it yet) should hold about 200 kg of concentrated load (a person weighing 200 kg standing at any point in the trunk), and so much more if you spread all the weight over the entire area. The experience of my teammates (niva4x4.ru) shows that the roof pillars of the car are strong, people carried 300-400 kg of building materials without any consequences, i.e. I’m calm about the body...
The size of the base along the outer contour is 110 cm x 140 cm, professional pipe 20 mm x 20 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm was used.
The only thing worth paying attention to is the angles. The pipe is hollow and must be cooked so that the ends do not remain open, otherwise you will get a wonderful whistle.
The easiest and fastest way to avoid open ends is to cut the pipes at 45 degrees and then butt weld. I went a different route because I don’t like cutting at an angle (I’m always off by a degree or even two), so I joined the corners as shown in the picture below:
I welded with electrodes with a diameter of 2.5 mm for carbon steels with a current of 70 A (inverter apparatus).

In this position, as in the photo, the trunk passed the first test - I stood in the middle (I weigh 80 kg) and jumped with all my heart - everything was holding together, nothing was bent. True, I didn’t wait until the seams cooled down, and as a result, the sole of the slippers slightly melted...
Stage No. 4 – welding the platform for the chandelier and fitting. In total, the overall dimensions of the trunk are 110 cm x 160 cm x 15 cm. The size of the platform for the chandelier is 20 cm by 110 cm. It is planned to install four headlights: on the sides there is a working light, and closer to the middle there is a high beam. The side lights will have the ability to rotate 90 degrees to illuminate the harsh night environment to the left and right of the car.
Stage No. 5 - welding the reinforcing mesh and painting (I used “primer-enamel” for rust, the toad choked me to spend money on Hammerite). According to the manufacturer's recommendation, I applied two layers (I didn't have enough patience for the third).
There is also a tricky point about welding the mesh - at first I tried to melt the mesh rod itself. Bad idea - it burns out instantly. Then I got the hang of it - I melted a professional pipe, next to the rod and slowly pushed a roll of metal onto the mesh rod - this worked much better.
Let's sum it up
So, we looked at what the all-wheel drive five-door Niva is. Among the positive aspects of the car it is worth emphasizing:
- Simplicity of design (accordingly, it can be repaired in most cases without the help of mechanics).
- Patency. Already in the basic configuration there is a locking and reduction gear.
- Spacious interior (compared to the short-wheelbase version).
- Soft suspension.
But this car also has disadvantages. Among them it is necessary to highlight:
- Weak motors.
- High fuel consumption.
- Body prone to corrosion.
- Poor sound insulation.
- Poor directional stability.
Who is this car suitable for? Niva is a good choice for those who need a simple and cheap all-wheel drive SUV for off-pavement driving. It is for such purposes that in most cases it is purchased. There is no point in buying a car and using it purely in the city. In summer it is hot, it is clumsy, and it eats a lot of fuel. For the city, it is better to choose something from the front-wheel drive VAZ family (for example, the “ten”, which will be cheaper to operate and more maneuverable in the city).
History of the machine
It all started back in 1970, when Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Alexei Kosygin, as part of the program “blurring the line between city and countryside,” set the teams of VAZ, AZLK and Izhmash the task of creating a comfortable SUV for residents of rural areas.
The first experimental VAZ-E2121 saw the light of day in 1971. Moreover, his appearance was very far from what we have become accustomed to for forty years. In fact, it was a chassis with a simple tail, on which the concept of a new car was developed - the SUV did not have a frame, which at that time was considered an unheard-of design audacity. Initially, the car was planned to be equipped with a powerful diesel engine, final drives, rear torsion bar suspension and even a tire pressure regulation system, but later they decided to create a simpler version with a high degree of unification with the models already produced by AvtoVAZ, which was economically justified. This prototype allowed the design bureau under the leadership of Peter Prusov to significantly reduce the time needed to create the car.
The VAZ-2121 appeared in a form close to the serial one in 1972. The artist Valery Semushkin worked on the design of the new car. The car, according to the designer, was supposed to suit residents of both cities and villages.
In 1974, the car was put up for state tests and in the same year received its own name “Niva”, which was patented.
In addition to sales at home, Niva was actively promoted in foreign markets. Over forty years, more than 500 thousand SUVs were sent abroad. This unpretentious, but at the same time quite comfortable SUV has attracted buyers in more than 100 countries around the world. Importers actively re-equipped the car, making it into pickup trucks, convertibles, and styling it according to fashion. In addition, assembly of the model was established in Brazil, Greece, Canada, Panama, Chile, and Ecuador.
In 1978, the VAZ-2121 was awarded a gold medal and recognized as the best car of its class at the international exhibition in Brno. “Niva” has a lot of records.
