Changing engine oil in a Peugeot car: step-by-step instructions

Like all internal combustion engines, the power units that are equipped with cars from the French company Peugeot require regular maintenance. One of the main procedures is changing the engine oil. This relatively simple operation, which any car owner can carry out, nevertheless requires certain skills and dexterity. However, changing the engine oil in a Peugeot 308 yourself has a number of differences that are not typical for other vehicles.

What kind of oil to pour

Peugeot recommends high-quality products from the French oil and gas company Total for use in its cars.

The French PSA group, which includes Peugeot, has developed and implemented a number of its own approvals for oils approved for use in Peugeot and Citroen cars. These tolerances are based on the ACEA classification, but introduce additional restrictions.

In accordance with the classification according to the Peugeot/Citroen version in 2009, there are the following tolerances for oils:

  1. PSA B71 2290 - recommended for engines that comply with the EURO-5 standard;
  2. PSA B71 2294, PSA B71 2296 – correspond to ACEA A3/B4 quality level with additional PSA tests;
  3. PSA B71 2295 - intended for engines manufactured before 1989;
  4. PSA B71 2312 - recommended for BlueHDI diesel engines equipped with a selective catalytic exhaust reduction system.

Motor oil that fully complies with PSA approvals is produced by the French oil and gas company TOTAL, whose products are of high quality. The PSA Group has been cooperating with this company for a long time.

Company specialists recommend filling the Peugeot 308 engine with Total Quartz 9000 Energy 0W-30 engine oil. In addition, for new engines equipped with exhaust gas after-treatment systems, the new generation Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30 motor oil with reduced sulfate ash content and low sulfur and phosphorus content (Low SAPS) is recommended.

Basic principles for selecting engine oil

Successful selection of the optimal lubricant for the Peugeot 308 engine helps reduce fuel consumption and increase the power of the power unit. You can give preference to different manufacturers and brands. But it is always advisable to follow the basic principles for selecting motor oil in order to sufficiently justify your option:

  • you need to choose only a certified, original, high-quality product;
  • do not go beyond the permissible classification limits established by the manufacturer (0W30; 5W30; 5W40);
  • when changing the type of oil used, be sure to flush the engine with special substances;
  • An increase in engine age leads to an increase in the viscosity of the motor lubricant.

Practical car enthusiasts advise, after draining the old lubricant, to fill in several liters of new one (according to the minimum indicator on the dipstick). Allow the engine to run for approximately 10 minutes. The lubricant is poured into a container and the engine is filled with the same new oil to the required volume.

The refusal to use flushing agents is motivated by the fact that modern lubricants from leading manufacturers contain various components, including detergents. The efficiency of flushing can be increased by driving 1500–2000 km on ordinary high-quality oil, then replacing it with a permanent one.

The answer to the question of what kind of oil to pour into the Peugeot 308 engine depends on the seasons of primary use of the car. For summer, the optimal option is an oil product with a viscosity index of 5W40. In winter, it is better to fill in car oil designated 0W30.

Changing the oil

The mileage at which an oil change in a Peugeot 308 engine is necessary ranges from 6 to 13 thousand km. Experienced car enthusiasts, as well as car service specialists, advise changing it:

  1. every 6...10 thousand kilometers when operating on dusty roads or in the cold season;
  2. after every 10…15 thousand km of distance traveled under normal operating conditions;
  3. after 20,000 km, if the service book indicates that the use of an extended service interval (longlife) is allowed.

Tools

Changing the oil of a Peugeot 308 of any modification is carried out using a regular set of tools, which is available in the trunk of every car owner:

  • standard heads for 10, 14, 17 and 27 mm;
  • wrench and extension;
  • set of hex keys;

In addition you will need:

  • container for draining waste (volume no less than 5 l);
  • funnel;
  • rubberized gloves;
  • bench brush;
  • clean rag or rags.

Step-by-step instruction

The replacement procedure is preceded by the purchase of new materials and spare parts, such as:

  • motor oil Total Quartz 9000 Energy 0W-30 or Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W-30;
  • sealing gasket for the drain plug (plug size M16x50);
  • fuel filter;
  • oil filter 1109.AN or HU 71151X;

In addition, the car is installed on an overpass or pit. Its engine must be warmed up to operating temperature. Only after this do they begin the replacement process itself, for which:

  1. unscrew the filler cap;
  2. dismantle the pallet protection (if equipped). To do this, you need to unscrew 11 mounting bolts, two of which are located under the plastic cover;
  3. using a brush and rag, clean the surface of the pan around the drain plug;
  4. place a 5-liter container under the drain hole;
  5. unscrew the drain plug.

Attention! The drained liquid has a high temperature.

Replacing the oil filter

The procedure for replacing the oil filter in a Peugeot 308 engine with your own hands differs from the generally accepted one, since the car uses a cassette oil filter.

  • In order to get to it, remove the plastic cover, loosen the clamp and dismantle the air intake. This is the only way to gain access to the filter housing, which is located on the side of the engine.
  • Remove it using a 27 mm socket wrench, a wrench and an extension. Having removed the old filter, carefully wipe the housing from the remnants of the old auto lubricant, lubricate it and install a new filter element. Then the housing with the new filter is put in place and the air intake is screwed back on.
  • After waiting for the waste liquid to drain, tighten the drain plug, replacing the sealing gasket.
  • Using a funnel, pour fresh auto lubricant through the neck.

ATTENTION: to avoid overfilling, first fill in 2.5 liters of engine oil, and then add it in small portions, monitoring the level with a dipstick.

  • The process stops when the oil mark on the dipstick is just below the MAX mark.
  • Next, tighten the filler cap.
  • Remove the old one and install a new fuel filter.
  • This completes the main part of the work. They start the engine. The emergency oil pressure light on the instrument panel should go out after 5 seconds.

If it goes out, then turn off the engine and, after a short wait, check the level of the filled auto-lubricant using a dipstick. After making sure that there are no fresh drips in the places where the filter and drain plug are installed, attach the crankcase protection in place.

Recommended indicators for lubricant replacement

The manufacturer advises changing the oil in the Peugeot 308 engine once a year or every 24,000 km. These tips are based on ideal vehicle operating conditions. But in practice, the established indicators are significantly reduced (sometimes twofold).

Reducing the time required to change engine oil is influenced by:

  • poor condition of the road surface;
  • operating a car in a big city with frequent traffic jams;
  • intense dustiness;
  • mountainous terrain with noticeable elevation changes;
  • engine operation at high speeds when towing trailers, caravans, and other vehicles;
  • low quality of lubricants and combustible materials.

You should also pay attention to the fact that after 50,000 km the Peugeot 308 engine may also require oil changes more often. Therefore, the optimal procedure is to change the lubricant every 10,000 km and at least once a year. This optimized oil change schedule can vary between 1500–2000 km, both in the direction of decreasing mileage and increasing it.

How much oil is needed to change?

Regarding Peugeot 308 vehicles, the most pressing question is how much oil is required to replace it in the engine. Searching for an answer to this question on various forums does not give an exact result; you can come across different numbers, and at the same time, each of the car owners will claim that he is right, based on personal experience in replacing the lubricant.

The fact is that the Peugeot 308 was equipped from the factory with different engine modifications, depending on which the oil volume varies. In order to find out exactly how much oil is required for the engine of your car, you need to look in the documentation for it for the volume of cylinders with which the unit is equipped. According to the manufacturer, Peugeot 308 models with the 1.4 engine version will require 4.25 liters of oil. For a 1.6 internal combustion engine with a 16V, THP 16V and Turbo HDI design, 3.25, 4.25 and 3.75 liters of motor oil will be required to completely replace it. And the 2 Turbo HDI 16V engine will contain exactly five liters and two hundred and fifty grams of lubricant.

When purchasing motor oil, depending on the type of engine of your car, you need to take the volume of products, rounded up to a whole number, for example, if your power unit requires, according to the instructions, 3.25 liters of lubricant, then buy a four-liter canister. Regardless of the modification of the internal combustion engine, the oil level is checked in all models using a dipstick, and lubrication indicators are considered normal when its criteria are midway between the MIN and MAX marks.

How often do you need to change the automatic transmission oil?

The manufacturer recommends updating the transmission fluid in the gearbox every 100,000 km. Taking into account the quality of fuel, operating conditions, and road surfaces in the Russian Federation, we reduce the period by half.

Many official representative offices and dealership centers recommend changing the oil in the interval from 50 to 70 thousand km. This range allows us to minimize the risks associated with the “aging” of the lubricant.

However, carrying out maintenance of an automatic transmission at around 100,000 km is also not prohibited.

Reduce the oil “renewal” interval if the car is operated for a long time with increased loads, works in “start-stop” mode, or has an aggressive driving style.

How much oil to fill (filling volumes)

  • Glass washer reservoir – 4.5 l;
  • Hydraulic drive of the brake system (clutch release) – filled to the MAX level (brake fluid DOT-3 or DOT-4);
  • Automatic transmission – 2 l (ATF LT 71141);
  • Manual gearbox – 1.9 l (Gearbox oil classification according to API GL-4, SAE 75W-80);
  • Power steering amplifier – DEXRONII / DEXRON III (top up as necessary);
  • Cooling system – 6 l (Coolant);
  • Engine lubrication system - 4.25 (SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30 and 5W-40, quality ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or A5/B5 and API SM);
  • Fuel tank 60 l.

Engine flushing

Do I need to flush the engine before adding new oil?

Without thinking, of course, you can impeccably say that you need to wash, and definitely! It is completely normal that over time, engines will develop sludge, varnish, and other deposits that cause irreparable damage to the engine.

Just remember that not all that glitters is gold.

Try to remember any well-known brands that have similar flushing oils in their arsenal? There are no such. But why? In fact, the answer is very, very simple.

Modern oils have a huge package of additives that act as cleaning agents, such as calcium or sodium. These “agents” do an excellent job of removing sludge and other types of deposits.

As a result, timely oil changes recommended by the car manufacturer will help keep the engine running smoothly and you will never need a flush.

Many car owners use flushing oil when switching from one oil to another, so that the “old” oil goes away along with the flushing oil and does not react with the new oil. What do we have in the end? To the “flushing” particles, often of extremely low quality and of unknown origin, it is proposed to add a stable and reliable composition of a new oil. So it turns out that “we wanted the best, but it turned out as always.”

In this regard, if you decide to flush the engine, then you should use only high-quality and well-known brands that are popular among car owners.

It should be added that the best cleaning or flushing of the engine is done with standard oil. You just need to fill the oil and drive it for about 1000 - 2000 kilometers, and then drain it.

Surely this method will seem costly to you, however, the most expensive undertaking is repairing the car engine.
