This car brand is the leader in sales among all-wheel drive SUVs. And this is not surprising. It can be used in any conditions, even the most extreme. Several generations of it are known on the modern market. The latter received the maximum number of positive reviews from the owners, as it has a number of advantages:
- High ground clearance;
- Frame design;
- All-wheel drive;
- Ability to lock rear axle differential;
- All equipment is modern;
- The finishing materials in the interior are of high quality.
All this and much more makes driving a car comfortable and safe. Allows it to be used on roads of different categories, including rural areas. The jeep can easily overcome any off-road conditions.
The latest generation was introduced this year. It has several trim levels: classic, optimum, prestige and maximum. The car is equipped with a four-stroke gasoline engine ZMZ-40906, Euro-5 and a five-speed manual transmission. Fuel consumption is not high and is 14 liters in the city, 11.6 liters per 100 km on the highway. The key to stable operation of the UAZ Patriot SUV is the timely replacement of consumables. Where, how much and what kind of oil to fill can be found in the table below.
Oil change intervals
The required indicator is reflected in the operating instructions for the SUV. For new cars it is 5000 km. This is due to the grinding of new parts against each other, which produces metal shavings.
The circulation of fine particles negatively affects the service life of the gearbox. The next oil changes are made every 30 thousand km. The breaks between procedures are reduced or increased depending on the quality of the lubricant and vehicle operating conditions.
Types of oils
Prior liquid volumes. priors refueling volumes
Choosing an oil is not an easy task, since when doing so you will have to deal not only with a huge number of brands, but also with different types.
As you know, there are the following types of motor lubricants:
- mineral;
- semi-synthetic;
- synthetic.
To select the type of oil, you must take into account the operating conditions of the vehicle. However, you can also use original oils recommended by the manufacturer himself.
These include the following products:
- UAZ Motor Oil Premium 5W-40;
- UAZ Motor Oil 10W-40;
- UAZ Motor Oil 0W-40.
Let's look at each of these products.
What kind of oil to fill in the gearbox
Compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations improves the performance characteristics of the machine - controllability, cross-country ability, reliability. The use of low-quality oil accelerates the wear of SUV parts. When choosing a lubricant, take into account which part will be processed with this liquid:
- Transfer case housing. In this case, purchase lubricants with a viscosity index of 75W90 according to SAE. The recommended product category according to API is GL-3.
- Rear and front axles. For UAZ Patriot, it is recommended to purchase a lubricant that corresponds to class GL-5 in terms of performance, viscosity grade 75 W.
- Dymos gearbox. Lubricant corresponding to category GL-4 is poured here. The viscosity of the product is 75W85.
Buying 3 types of oil is not economically feasible.

The recording is more for myself, but maybe it will be useful to someone else. Since after the purchase I only changed the oil in the engine, and it’s not at all clear what and how much in the transmission, I’m thinking about changing the oils in the gearbox, transfer case and axles. It would be good to know what kind of transmission oil to fill in to reduce the howling of the transfer case.

Refueling volumes
To know how much oil is needed for a complete change, you need to study the instructions. Here are the filling volumes of the UAZ Patriot for the following transfer case units:
- Bridges. 1.4 liters of lubricant are poured into the front part of this unit, and 1.3 liters into the rear part. The total volume is 2.7 liters.
- Handout. The capacity of this part is 700 ml.
- Checkpoint “Daimos”. 2.5 liters of liquid are poured into this unit.
If each part uses its own oil, purchase a liter of fluid for the gearbox, 3 liters for axles and gearboxes. When using one type of product, all previously obtained indicators are summed up. The total volume will be 7 liters.
Checking the level and topping up
Before starting work, you need to take the selected oil, a size 12 hex key, a syringe for filling, and a clean rag. Refueling is done as follows:
- Place the car on a lift or inspection pit.
- Clean the filler valve with a stiff brush and wipe with a rag. The normal fluid level is limited to the bottom of the valve located on the crankcase cover. If this indicator differs, topping up is required.
- Remove the filler plug. The part is wiped and put aside.
- Add oil using a syringe. Check the level again. If it exceeds the norm, the excess will leak.
- Screw in the plug and remove any remaining grease with a rag. They check whether the car starts and evaluate the performance of the transfer unit.
Procedure for changing the oil in UAZ Patriot
Before changing the lubricant, you must prepare:
- container for collecting old grease;
- fresh oil in the required volume;
- clean transmission syringe;
- hex key size 12 mm;
- clean cloth or rags;
- hand and eye protection;
- a wire brush to remove a layer of dirt from the surface of the bridges.
In the front axle
There are 2 threaded plugs on the front axle housing, designed to drain old lubricant and refill with a fresh portion of the substance. The upper hole is designed to check the liquid level, which should reach the lower edge of the channel. Both plugs are equipped with an internal hexagonal key hole measuring 12 mm.
Sequence of actions when changing the oil in the crankcase 2022 assembly:
- If the lubricant is being changed for the first time, it is necessary to remove the plastic seal from the drain plug. Before this, it is recommended to warm up the lubricant by driving the car for 15-20 km. Draining is carried out no later than 15 minutes after the end of the trip.
- Place the vehicle on a flat surface above the inspection hole or raise it on a lift. Tilt of the vehicle is not allowed, as it prevents the complete drainage of used oil from the gearboxes.
- Place a stable, wide-necked container with a capacity of at least 2 liters under the crankcase.
- Wipe the surface of the bridge and plugs from dirt with a dry cloth. Unscrew the filler channel plug, which speeds up the procedure for removing waste fluid from the bridge cavity.
- Unscrew the drain plug, which needs to be cleaned of metal wear debris with a cloth.
- After the lubricant drops stop flowing out of the bridge, the plug should be returned to its place. The conical shape of the plug ensures sealing of the joint, but the plant recommends applying an additional layer of sealant that is resistant to petroleum products to the surface.
- Fill the gearbox cavity with fresh lubricant using a transmission syringe with a curved spout; the liquid should be filled until a leak appears from the filling channel.
- Wipe the surface of the bridge from grease, and then tighten the plug with a wrench.
The breather is equipped with a screw plug with a labyrinth ventilation channel, which must be unscrewed before refilling. The disadvantage of this method is that it is impossible to check the level in the normal way, since the liquid will flow through the control hole after removing the plug.
Article about changing the oil in the UAZ Patriot transfer case
In the rear axle
To complete the work, you will need a 12 mm internal hex key and a clean rag to wipe the surfaces from dirt and grease stains. The procedure for changing the oil in the rear axle housing is no different from pouring lubricant into the front axle gearbox. The design of the cases is unified, but 100 ml less liquid is required for refilling. Additional oil may be added through the ventilation duct.
DIY replacement instructions
The list of tools used for topping up is supplemented with a container for collecting waste liquid. Before starting work, the machine is brought into the inspection hole. Before changing the oil, warm up the car, using it for its intended purpose for at least 15 minutes. This promotes liquefaction and easy removal of waste. The replacement is done like this:
- Place a container under the bottom to drain used oil from the transfer case. Using a wrench, unscrew the plug located in the lower part of the crankcase. Unscrewing the fill valve speeds up the waste removal process.
- Wait for the liquid to drain and screw in the drain plug. Before installation, the part is cleaned of dirt.
- Lubricant is injected using a syringe. Filling oil with a watering can will not work. A technical syringe copes with this task better.
- Once the desired level is reached, the filling is stopped. The plug is returned to its place.
The work is completed by turning on the engine, which promotes uniform distribution of lubricant.

Draining fuel from UAZ Patriot
In rare cases, it happens when the owner of a Patriot needs to drain the fuel. The UAZ fuel system has its own design features, which makes it impossible to simply drain gasoline. However, this procedure can still be carried out.
In order to drain a certain amount of fuel, you only need to open the plug. Remember, the fuel tanks on the UAZ have rather curved pipelines that come from the so-called filler plugs, therefore, if you want to insert a regular hose through the plug in order to drain gasoline using the well-known old and proven method, you will not succeed. In general, it is simply impossible to drain fuel from one tank or another. This statement will discourage many, but everything is in order.
There is a method, however, it is not easy. First, you need to use a valve to relieve the pressure present in the ramp. Next, you need to remove the hose from the ramp itself and lower the remaining other end and secure, if necessary, in a previously stored container to drain the fuel. Then turn on the ignition; you need to monitor the filling of the container. Now that the required amount of fuel has been drained, all that remains is to simply turn off the ignition. The most important thing is to strictly follow the instructions, and then everything will work out. With this procedure, it is not necessary to start the engine, since the gasoline pump starts working when the ignition is turned on. This is the only way you can drain the fuel from the UAZ Patriot tank.

Refueling tanks and their volume on UAZ Patriot
The design of any car includes a fuel tank, gearbox, engine and other parts with different capacities. Gasoline, antifreeze, brake fluid or oil are poured into these containers. Studying the refueling volumes of the UAZ Patriot will help you understand what and in what quantity you need to fill the main components of the SUV.
List of UAZ Patriot refueling tanks
Refill tanks are units filled with working fluids. Content is periodically replaced or added. The Russian-made SUV has 2 filling tanks, which increases the volume of gasoline or diesel fuel to be filled to 80 liters. Not every car in this class has such a gas tank structure.
Refueling stations include the following units, components and devices:
- fuel tanks;
- car engine cooling system;
- Transmission;
- engine lubricant supply system;
- housings of two bridges;
- hydraulic steering column reinforcement system;
- brake system;
- windshield washer pump tank;
- transfer case housing;
- clutch.
These filling containers are available in cars of any configuration. They are represented by mechanical or plastic tanks. Sometimes the working fluid circulates in the mechanisms themselves.
What fluids are needed to operate an SUV?
A UAZ Patriot equipped with a 409 engine, and some other vehicles of a similar design, must be filled with the following working fluids:
- Gasoline or diesel fuel. The choice of fuel depends on the design of the engine.
- Transmission and motor oils. They are poured not only into the engine. They are used in the operation of the gearbox, transfer mechanism and axles. Oils reduce friction, ensuring the correct operation of SUV components and preventing their premature wear.
- Brake fluid. This product is poured into the containers of braking and clutch systems. Brake fluid reduces the friction that occurs between the discs and pads when the engine stops.
- Antifreeze or antifreeze. They are used to reduce engine temperature and maintain the operation of the interior heating system.
- Windshield washer fluid . It is poured into a plastic tank located in the engine compartment. Used to clean the windshield or rear window from dirt. To fill the windshield washer reservoir in the summer, use water; in winter, use antifreeze liquid.
Patriot refueling volumes
UAZ Patriot refueling parameters correspond to the following values:
- Fuel tanks . The left gas tank holds up to 36 liters of liquid fuel. According to the data in the instructions, the right tank has the same volume. Actual figures may slightly exceed those stated. This means that 1-3 liters more fuel can be filled into the tanks.
- Engine lubrication system. The volume of this element is 7 liters. The lubrication system of the UAZ Patriot 31631 holds only 4 liters of oil.
- Engine cooling and interior heating system. The tank can be filled with 12 liters of coolant. The radiator volume with longitudinal pipes reaches 14 liters.
- Manual transmission. The capacity of this unit is 2.5 liters.
- Transfer system housing. The tank volume of this part of the car is 800 ml.
- Rear and front axles. The capacities of these SUV elements differ from each other. The front axle holds up to 1.4 liters of oil. The volume of the rear element is 1.5 liters. The actual capacity of the rear axle housing is slightly higher than stated. Filling with more oil will help maintain the functionality of this unit. All working parts of the system must be immersed in lubricant.
- Hydraulic power steering column. For most modifications of Patriot cars, this figure is 1.1 liters. The power steering of the UAZ-31631 holds 1.3 liters.
- Steering gear. The capacity is 250 ml. The volume of the brake mechanism is 0.6 l.
- Window washer tank. Up to 5 liters of liquid are poured here.
The shock absorbers (0.3 l) and clutch drive (0.18 l) have the smallest capacity. The owner must be familiar with all the parameters of filling containers. The necessary information can be found in the user manual.
What are the refueling volumes of the Patriot?
Each car in its design includes a tank, an engine, a gearbox and many other parts and assemblies that have their own volumes.
These volumes hold gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, brake fluid or antifreeze, but they differ for each model.
Today we will pay attention to the refueling tanks on the UAZ Patriot SUV and consider what they are, and in what quantity one or another vehicle mechanism should be filled.
How to wear aiguillette correctly
What are the components?
Refill tanks are units that contain working fluids. They periodically require replacement or refueling, just like with a gas tank. By the way, the UAZ Patriot SUV is equipped with two refueling tanks, which allows you to increase the amount of fuel to be filled to almost 80 liters. Few cars of this class can afford such a gas tank design.
Refill volumes include the following devices, mechanisms and parts:
- gas tanks;
- Patriot engine cooling system;
- Transmission;
- the engine, or rather its lubrication system;
- housings of both axles;
- hydraulic power steering system;
- brake system;
- clutch system;
- glass washer pump reservoir;
- transfer case.
UAZ Patriot, as well as other vehicles similar in design and having similar mechanisms, necessarily has the refueling volumes listed above, presented in the form of plastic tanks or located directly in the units themselves. It is in these devices that the filling fluid for a particular mechanism is located. These liquids include the following:
- gasoline or diesel fuel, depending on the design of the engine itself;
- motor and transmission oils, which are filled not only into the engine, but also into the gearbox, transfer case and axles;
- brake fluid poured into the brake mechanism and clutch system of an SUV;
- antifreeze or antifreeze, used for engine cooling and interior heating;
- windshield washer fluid, which is filled into the windshield and rear window washer reservoir.
So, now let's look at the digital values of all the above-mentioned devices, what volumes of working fluid they have and what they represent.
Refueling volumes
For Patriot, refueling volumes correspond to the following data:
- gas tanks: the left tank is designed for 36 liters, as stated by the manufacturer, the right one has the same volume and is 36 liters, although in fact it is known that you can add a little more fuel to the gas tanks;
- the volume of the engine lubrication system is 7 liters, and for UAZ Patriot 31631 models the amount of lubricant is 4.2 liters;
- engine cooling and interior heating system - 12 l, and for a radiator with horizontal tubes the capacity is 14 l;
- The manual gearbox has a volume of 2.5 liters;
- the transfer case is about 0.8 liters;
- The front and rear axles of the rogue have filling volumes that differ in value from each other. So, for the front axle the typical oil filling is 1.5 liters, and for the rear axle - 1.4 liters. But in fact, it is recommended to pour more than 1.4 liters of oil into the rear axle housing so that the working elements inside are completely absorbed by the lubricant;
- power steering - 1.1, and for the UAZ-31631 model - 1.3l;
- steering gear – 0.25;
- clutch drive is 0.18l;
- brake mechanism - 0.6l;
- shock absorbers - 0.32, but it all depends on the devices used in the suspension design;
- The windshield washer reservoir is 5 liters.
The most economical crossovers in terms of fuel consumption
All these parameters are important and every owner of his car should have all the numbers. Otherwise, you can always refer to the car’s operating instructions and find out even the smallest details. If you have questions or feedback, you can always leave it at the end of each material.
Knowing these parameters, it is important to correctly refuel or top up the working components during replacement. Avoid operating any system with a missing base or with a reduced level, as this greatly reduces the life of the unit.
What fluids are needed for Patriot to work?
The domestic UAZ Patriot, which has a 409 engine, and a number of other cars that are similar in their mechanisms and design, are required to have the above-mentioned refueling tanks, which are presented in the form of tanks made of plastic and located in various units. It is in such devices that different working fluids are located. Check out the list of working fluids present in the UAZ Patriot:
- Transmission and engine oils are filled into the power unit, transfer case, as well as gearboxes and axles.
- Antifreeze or antifreeze is required for heating the interior and cooling the engine;
- Depending on the design of the power plant, diesel fuel or gasoline.
- Liquid intended for glass washers, poured into the rear and windshield washer reservoirs.
- Brake fluid is poured into the clutch system, plus into the brake mechanism.

Volume of the UAZ loaf cooling system. What should be the filling volumes of the UAZ Patriot?
Production models of the UAZ Patriot are equipped with digital coolant temperature sensors (hereinafter referred to as DTOZH).
The measuring device is designed to monitor the “degree” of antifreeze and transmit data to the electronic control unit of the ECU.
Based on the received data, the ECU displays information on the dashboard.
The driver reacts to signals from the instrument panel and decides on the advisability of subsequent operation of the technical device.
Due to various circumstances, sensors periodically fail. Since the design is non-separable, the devices must be replaced entirely. Installing a new DTS yourself is not at all difficult, but follow the recommendations in the operating instructions. Violating the regulations is not acceptable.
The appearance of the car
The prototype of the first “452”, called by the people “Loaf”, was the Soviet GAZ-69 car. When creating the UAZ in the fifties, the design solutions and developments of GAZ made it possible to design a suitable chassis with the ability to transport cargo. It was planned to install both an onboard body and a van made of metal on the platform.
In 1958, on the GAZ-69 running platform of an extended modification, a car with all-wheel drive, labeled UAZ-450, was released. The vehicle came in the following versions: a van, a truck with sides, and an ambulance.
The power plant was installed in the vehicle under the driver's cabin, the engine was borrowed from GAZ. The engine with a lower valve arrangement, volume 2.4 cm3, produced 62 horsepower.
The impulse is transmitted to the wheels using a three-stage gearbox and a two-stage transfer mechanism.
Subsequently, on the basis of the brand, the UAZ-451 model was released, which had a rear axle drive. The machine is equipped with a power plant with an overhead valve arrangement, produced by the Ulyanovsk plant. The impulse to the wheels was transmitted by a four-speed gearbox. From the outside, the cabin design acquired features that are still preserved today.
The modernization of the UAZ-450 led to the appearance of the “452” model in 1965, which people called “Loaf” for its characteristic resemblance to a bread product.
UAZ 452 loaf technical characteristics, which led to popularity and recognition, are in demand by sections of society. The seventy-fourth year was marked by the release of the millionth UAZ-452 vehicle.
The plant was awarded many times for its contribution to the development of the automotive industry and for successful modification. Later, the product was awarded the All-Union Quality Mark (1977).
Over the twenty years of production, no changes or modifications were made to the “452”. In 1985, it was decided to change the labeling of cars leaving the factory.
The four hundred and fifty-second was marked as “3741”, the index is still used today.
The “Loaf” in today’s version is equipped with a fuel atomizing engine that meets the Euro-4 standard, a mechanism that prevents wheel locking, and a hydraulic power steering.

Dimensions of UAZ Loaf length and width
During the production of “Loaf”, the parameters of the length and width of the vehicle body did not change. There was no point in modernizing the equipment, since the design combined spaciousness and cross-country ability. As mentioned, the length of the car is 4.36 meters, the width is 1.94 meters, the height of the UAZ Bukhanka is 2.09 meters.
The indicators allow the car to reach a speed of 127 kilometers per hour, and the ascent angles allow it to easily overcome an angle of 30°. The ground clearance of the car is 22 centimeters. With this indicator, the vehicle overcomes a ford 0.5 meters deep.
An aspect that influences popularity is the price of the car. The democratic approach, in comparison with competitors, provides sufficient capacity. The car easily carries a ton of cargo.
In addition, the equipment is used as a passenger vehicle. Various UAZ-452 models carry from two to ten people.
In addition, the vehicle is equipped with a towbar; the weight of the product varies from 0.75 to 1.5 tons.

Engine ZMZ-409
Liquids used and filling volumes Niva VAZ 21213, 21214 and 2131
ZMZ 409 is an injection gasoline engine with 4 cylinders in an in-line arrangement and 16 valves. In the 409 engine, the injector system is controlled by a microprocessor electronic unit. This motor was put on the conveyor in 1996. This engine was mainly installed on new and modern domestic UAZ and GAZ cars. The entire generation of these power plants is equipped with a gas neutralizer and is manufactured entirely in accordance with EURO-2 standards.
Modifications of the internal combustion engine ZMZ-409
- The base engine is 409.10 for Euro-2 standard with a power of 143 hp, with a compression ratio of 9, and a torque of 230 Nm. The ignition is modular with a bunch of high-voltage wires, there is a throttle sensor.
- The improved modification 40904.10 differs from the previous version in the ignition system - an individual coil for each spark plug; there is no throttle position sensor (TPS) here; instead, a throttle unit is used to ensure Euro-3. There is an automatic alternator belt tensioner, which is not provided in 409.10.
- Modification 40905.10 is similar to the previous one, intended for Hunter, Patriot SUVs and Cargo and Pickup trucks manufactured by UAZ. Complies with Euro-4 environmental standard.
- The power drive marked 40911.10 has a torque of 219.5 Nm and a power of 125 hp. Complies with Euro-4 regulations, designed for all-wheel drive UAZ trucks with a 4x4 formula (not switchable).
- ZMZ 4091.10 is a deformed low-grade version of ZMZ 40904.10, meets the Euro-3 environmental standard. Has a power of 112 hp, installed on Tablets and Loaves of UAZ 462.
- 4092.10 is a non-serial modification, created specifically for GAZ Volga and UAZ 3160 (all-wheel drive SUV). Torque in the range of 225 - 235 Nm, power - 160 hp.
An increase in power of up to 30% can be obtained by installing a turbo compressor or gas turbine on it. Of course, foreign manufacturers have not made turbocharged engines with a design like the 3M3-409 for many years. This refers to the working volume and “gluttony”. For this reason, it is not easy to find a serial gasoline-powered turbine at an acceptable cost and appropriate size. The best option is the Garrett TB-25 turbine. This model is far from new, but it fully fits into all the parameters of the “3M3-409”.
Maintenance of ZMZ-409
The basic requirement for maintaining a fully operational engine is the use of high-quality fuel and technical fluids. The life of the engine depends on the purity of gasoline, the quality of lubricant and coolant.
You should check regularly:
- engine oil level;
- amount of coolant;
- tension condition of engine belts and chains;
- condition of the injectors. Periodically, if necessary (“motor tripping” and other problems), they should be cleaned.
The critical weak point of the ZMZ 409 is considered to be the pump, the condition of which should be closely monitored and replaced when signs of malfunction appear.
It is important to monitor the condition of the spark plugs
The period for carrying out some operations according to the regulations:
- 6 months/10,000 km – change the engine oil and oil filter;
- 20 thousand km. or 1 year - checking the condition of the crankcase ventilation system, spark plugs, battery, timing chains and belt drives of attachments;
- 1.5 years/30,000 km – inspect the exhaust manifold for burnout, replace the fuel and air filters;
- 40 thousand or 2 years - inspection of hoses and components of the cooling system, replacement of fluid in the system;
- 90-100 thousand km. — Replacement of timing chain and rollers with tensioners.
A new engine with more torque from UAZ has been awaited for a very long time. Of course, the ZMZ-409 did not turn out to be exactly the engine we wanted, but it copes with its responsibilities. Good torque, amazing maintainability, reliability, availability of spare parts - these are, of course, the advantages of the engine.
The disadvantages are insufficient elasticity when driving off-road, demands on high-quality fuels and lubricants (now you need 92 gasoline and good oil), more complex and expensive maintenance.
The 409 is more economical, more predictable and, being timely serviced, does not require intermediate adjustments and adjustments. It has very good potential for modernization and broad commonality with other engines in the line.
