Thanks to this, you can adjust the operation of the windshield wiper based on weather conditions. “Nine” is equipped with three wiper operating modes:
- intermittent;
- constant movement at low speed;
- constant movement at high speed.
Often only one mode does not want to work on the VAZ-2109, so it is advisable to know the design, as well as the control mechanism of the wipers.
The wipers operate in intermittent mode in the first two positions of the switch lever. The third position is necessary for the wiper to operate in constant mode at a low speed.
Troubleshooting Methods
If the wipers do not work on the VAZ 2109, then you can detect and repair the damage yourself.
The repair is carried out in stages:
- The assembly is first disassembled;
- Then faults are detected;
- Then repair or replace the faulty parts;

Disassembling the windshield wiper
Disassembly consists of the following sequence of actions:
- First of all, you need to turn off the power to the car by removing the negative terminal from the battery.
- Next, the brush arms are installed in a vertical position, then the fastening nuts are unscrewed. Now you can remove them.
- Using pliers, carefully pull the levers out of the slot without damaging the threads.

- Unscrew the lower bolt securing the wiper arm.
- Then slide the plastic wire holder through the slot on the back panel and remove it so you don't lose it.
- Through the holes in the case we show the rollers of the device. Then, by slightly lifting and sliding the windshield wiper and motor up and to the side, remove the assembly.

All that remains is to remove the retaining ring and shims from the gearbox shaft and install the new motor. Reassemble in reverse order.
For more comfortable operation, we recommend moving the oven fan to the right. Without this, the wiper cannot be removed. You will also need to remove the fuse cover and any relays that are there.
The wiper itself must also be moved slightly to the left before removal.
Hardware problems: if the electric motor is running...
Incidents when the wipers on a VAZ 2109 do not work solely due to a disruption in the transmission chain of the torque already generated by the electromechanics are eliminated quickly and most often do not require third-party investment. The procedure looks like this:
- Remove the protective panel from the gearbox;
- Remove transmission;
- Remove the cage nuts after first unscrewing the two bolts;
- The gear housing is disconnected together with the brush holder from the engine;
- The anchor is removed and cleaned with a compressor.
Removing the rear wiper usually follows the same procedure, but you still need to remove the door trim to get to the wires and other components.
Verdict
On a VAZ 2109 car, the electric motor and wipers do not work at the same time for the following reasons:
- frozen brushes;
- incorrect location of brush holders in extreme positions and defects in geometry;
- oxidized/burnt contact connectors and defective wires;
- defective relay;
- wear of the brush-collector unit in the gearmotor;

A properly functioning gear motor may not transmit torque to the wipers in the following cases:
- the nuts securing the levers on the axis of the driven shafts of the trapezoid are loosened;

The size of the windshield blades on these models is symmetrical and amounts to 51 cm on each side. But it is also possible to install brushes of a different size: on the driver’s side 53cm, on the passenger side 51cm. If you put both 53 cm each, then a thin strip of water will form in the middle.
The rear window blade size is 30cm. But you can put 33cm here, and there will be no problems. Some people also set it to 40cm, but in this case it will be necessary to increase the wiper stroke limit. In other words, so that the wiper does not fall very low and does not run into the rear window seal. This is done very simply: remove the motor and put it back, but offset by a couple of teeth.

When the relay is triggered, the electric motor does not start
This reason may lead to thoughts about a non-working electric motor or blown fuses.
We check the integrity of the fuses with a tester; if they are in working order, we proceed to inspect the trapezoid located under the hood; it is possible that it is deformed or there is a foreign object in it. In winter, the reason may be that the blades freeze to the windshield. If no flaws are found on the trapezoid, and the wiper blades move normally, you will have to check the electric motor. To eliminate other possible malfunctions, remove the electric motor and connect it directly to the battery. If it starts working, you need to look for the cause in the electrical circuit; if not, have it diagnosed by an auto electrician.
