This car was able to change the idea of ​​what a compact all-terrain vehicle should look like not only among residents of the Soviet Union, but also among the countries of the Western world. The history of the VAZ 2121 begins in 1972. At the same time, thoughts about an affordable all-terrain vehicle for citizens of the USSR appeared among the country's leadership since the late 1960s. The Soviet Union urgently needed a “rogue” that was accessible to the vast majority of the population and had excellent performance both on and off the pavement.

This desire was caused by the fact that the road network of the USSR was in an underdeveloped state, and the quality of the roads themselves left much to be desired. The development of the all-terrain vehicle was carried out by three manufacturers at once - AZLK, IzhMash, AvtoVAZ. The latter was able to present the most interesting version of the future Niva.

However, even at relatively low speeds, driving the Niva requires good reaction and nerves of steel: the gearbox knob regularly jams or stops falling into the right grooves, the car constantly skids, and steering becomes necessary even on dry roads on a summer day.

Design and convenience

Also, depending on the use of the car, it makes sense to install self-locking differentials. As a rule, they are installed in order to avoid slipping in snow and sand, in cases where there is a tendency to dig in due to the non-monochrome operation of the wheels along the axle. I screwed it up complicatedly, but it couldn’t be simpler. In short, if the vehicle is driven through snowdrifts, ice or sand, then it makes sense to install blockers. If the car climbs through mud, then the issue is moot. I'm sitting on my stomach, no blocking will help, install a winch for this money. Although the right to choose remains with the car owner. : in my opinion, there is no point in bothering here.
The factory equipment in terms of gear ratio is quite consistent. The only thing that can be suggested is replacing the factory gearbox with a reinforced so-called “Lux” gearbox adapted to the Niva (Japan, used on Susuki Vitara). The gear ratio is approximately the same as the serial gearbox, but differs in its endurance due to more powerful components. Transfer case
: For very serious off-road specialists, I can offer a built-in synchronizer for engaging a lower gear while the car is moving without stopping and interrupting traction.

I won’t focus my attention, we don’t seem to need this for off-road use, but still, from my own experience I can say that this option is in demand. It seems like why? But it turns out that in order to get to your favorite hunting or fishing spot you have to travel hundreds of kilometers. This is where this option came in handy for us. Gasoline savings of up to 2.5 liters per hundred, of course, this depends on the condition of the internal combustion engine, driving style and adequate attitude towards saving. The protection of vehicle components and assemblies plays an important role. If we installed a winch and believe that sooner or later we will need it, then the operation of the car will be quite harsh. A winch is usually used when the car is sitting on its belly, and no axle blocking helps. In this case, the underbody protection will allow us to avoid external damage to the transmission units; it completely covers the internal combustion engine, gearbox, and steering gear. Produced in two versions of 6 mm duralumin. — light weight, practically indeformable, and made of 3 mm steel. When installing 235/75-R15 wheels, it is necessary to modify the wheel arches and install extensions to cover it all. Which overlays to install depends on how the arches were modified. If, at a minimum, only the corners that the wheels touch during active suspension operation and when cornering, then you can get by with ABS plastic arch linings. If the arches were cut and rolled to the upper outer stiffener, then there are two options: fiberglass linings or rubber expanders. Don’t forget to also trim the front apron to prevent it from becoming deformed. There are two ways to protect the front of the body: installing the F-4 protection on a standard bumper, or installing a fully power bumper with a provided platform for installing a winch. An adapter for a removable winch is also provided for the power bumper. What does this mean, that is, your winch, screwed in advance onto a removable platform, is located in the trunk of the car; if necessary, the winch is inserted into the power bumper, fixed and ready for use. Dismantling occurs in reverse order. It is also possible to install a power towbar with a removable ball, the principle is the same, the ball is removed, the same removable platform with a winch is installed in its place and the car can be pulled back. That is, having one winch, which is constantly located inside the car and is not exposed to external influences, if necessary, we get a double result; we can pull the car both forward and backward. When lifting the car and installing 235/75-R15 wheels, a problem arises with the spare tire. The fact is that a wheel of this size does not fit under the hood. There are several options, be content with a standard spare wheel, install a spare wheel bracket or an expeditionary roof rack on the roof of the car with a ladder on the tailgate. It’s difficult to advise anything here; each option has its own pros and cons, so I leave the decision of which spare tire and where it will be located to the car owner. Test drive of the VAZ 2121 Niva in the city and on the highway leaves much to be desired. This model is equipped with main gear pairs with a large gear ratio, which, in accordance with the long gears of the four-speed gearbox, gives some advantages in cross-country ability in contrast to later versions and provides better traction characteristics. Therefore, you can overcome a muddy or steep climb under tension, without acceleration, simply by turning on a downshift in advance.

The native element of the three-door Niva is a very rough forest road. This is where the car turns out to be very good. It can pass through ditches and ditches without difficulty, either perpendicularly or diagonally. The suspension travel is quite large, but if diagonal suspension of the wheel occurs and loss of contact with the ground, then we block the differential in the transfer case and continue driving.

The approach and departure angles are quite decent, so climbing a steep hill or fording a stream will not be difficult.
