A starter or starting device (PU), as it is sometimes called among motorists, is designed to start a car engine. After turning the key in the ignition switch, current is transferred from the battery to the control unit. The latter is activated, driving the motor.


Violation of the rules for using the mechanism leads to its rapid wear and damage. For example, keeping it in an active state for more than 15 seconds wears out the bendix teeth and increases the operating temperature on the rubbing surfaces.

Mechanical

A stationary crankshaft with a working starter is a sign of a malfunction of the overrunning clutch, pressure spring, wear of the retaining ring, or flywheel. A metallic grinding noise during rotation indicates wear on the flywheel teeth and possible breaks. If the starter does not start, then the reason is a faulty electrical part.

After starting the motor, the launcher continues to rotate:

  • jamming of the spring, drive shaft;
  • contact board sticking;
  • wear of the solenoid relay;
  • The bearing race is damaged.

On starters used with Lada engines, special attention should be paid to the bushings on which the armature axis is supported. Worn bushings allow the axle to move freely, which leads to jamming of the electric motor.

It is also better to replace the Bendix with a new one.

Common signs of unstable performance

  • The control unit starts on the second or third attempt: the contact board of the traction relay burns out;
  • The starter rotates with great effort: wear of the brushes and pressure spring;
  • The drive shaft disengages due to some delay: wear of the bendix and flywheel teeth.

Where is the starter installed in a Lada Largus car?

As in many models of the Lada family, the control unit is located in the engine compartment, closer to the flywheel, at the end of the cylinder block wall.

Lada XRAY and Vesta

Remove the engine splash guard (instructions for Lada Vesta, XRAY).

For configurations with manual transmission: Unscrew 2 bolts (No. 1) and remove the clutch hydraulic cylinder (No. 2), without disconnecting it from the hydraulic actuator tube (No. 3). Hang the cylinder on the technological hook (head “13”).

For all configurations: Unscrew the nut (No. 1) and disconnect the terminal (No. 2) and the block with wires (No. 3) from the starter traction (retractor) relay (No. 4) (head “13”).

Remove 3 bolts (No. 1), remove the clutch hydraulic cylinder mounting bracket (No. 2) (for vehicles with manual transmission) and the starter (No. 3) (Torx E10).

Replacement and installation of starter Lada Largus

After carrying out comprehensive diagnostics and identifying the breakdown, we prepare consumables and tools for repairs. We use additional lighting if natural light is not enough.

  • We place the car on an inspection hole, preferably a lifting mechanism, after squeezing the parking brake;
  • Turn off the ignition, raise the hood, disconnect the terminals from the battery (key to “10”);
  • We remove the casing of the electronic control unit (ECM) by first pressing out the plastic clips on the sides. For convenience, we use a flat-tip screwdriver;
  • We unscrew the fastening of the expansion tank, move it to the side, do not disconnect the pipes;
  • Disconnect the gearbox drive cables JR5, JH3, remove the cover, rods, and spacer bushing;
  • We unscrew the two nuts - clamps, and remove the PU from its regular place.

The design of the Lada Largus allows you to remove the PU from under the bottom of the car, it is not at all necessary to remove it through the top.

This completes the dismantling. Next, the technician installs a new starter, having first made sure that there are no defects, cracks, or chips. However, not all car enthusiasts can afford to purchase a new PU. They prefer to restore the existing one.

Algorithm for complete disassembly of the starter

Most often it is necessary to replace: brush holder, relay, drive.

  • We check the armature winding for absence of charring;
  • The surface of the shaft journal is free of scratches;
  • We measure the resistance of the winding core with an ohmmeter;
  • We check the soldering of the winding on the lamellas.

What can you do before removing the starter?

If, when trying to start the Lada Largus engine, retractor clicks appear from time to time, then there is an option that will help the starter last another 20-30 thousand kilometers.

  1. Turn the wheels to the left until they stop.
  2. Remove the negative battery terminal.
  3. Take a ratchet with a good extension and a long 10 and 8 socket.

After this, check that all marks on the belt, rollers and pulleys match. A broken timing belt can be checked in a simpler and faster way. Lada 4×4

Remove the rear support bracket for the intake pipe by unscrewing the two bolts with a 13mm wrench.

We remove the starter protective shield by unscrewing its fastening nuts with a “13” wrench.

From the bottom of the car, unscrew the two bolts securing the starter. From the engine compartment side, move the starter forward and disconnect the block with wires.

We unscrew the nut and disconnect the wire tip from the contact bolt of the traction relay. Remove the starter from the engine compartment.
