Removal and installation of the throttle assembly of the VAZ 2170 Priora

The throttle position sensor is used to determine the speed and degree of opening of the throttle valve. A throttle position sensor, or TPS as it is abbreviated, is a device that was originally designed to convert the angular position of the throttle valve into a DC voltage. This sensor is considered one of the sensors of all electronic engine control systems of a fuel injection vehicle. After receiving a signal from the throttle position sensor, the controller monitors the angle by which the throttle valve has deviated. Based on the information received from the throttle sensor, the electronic control unit selects the fuel transfer mode.

Cleaning the throttle valve

In this article we will try to answer these frequently asked questions:

  • Air leaks through the so-called throttle valve;
  • Signs of a bad throttle valve;
  • How to remove oil in the throttle valve?;
  • What to do if the speed increases after cleaning the throttle valve?;
  • Cleaning and adjusting the throttle valve.

Causes of pollution

The causes of clogging of the remote control are most often exhaust crankcase gases, which carry particles of burnt oil and soot. Small crankcase ventilation is connected directly to the throttle corrugation. The air entering the cylinders mixes with crankcase gases and, passing through the diaphragm, clogs it.

The throttle can also become clogged due to a poor-quality air filter or its loose fit, then dust particles can pass through the filter and clog not only the remote control, but also cause significant harm to the engine.

Node location

Opening the hood of the Priora, you won’t be able to see the throttle assembly. It is located under a plastic casing that covers the top of the engine. In addition to aesthetic value, it has the function of protecting against a heated valve cover.

After removing the casing, the air supply system will appear. It is a large rubber pipe connected on one side to the air filter box, and on the other to the intake manifold. A Priora throttle valve assembly is installed between them. It looks like an aluminum insert with a plastic black wing in the form of a sector, to which the control cable is connected (in the case of a mechanical drive).

Symptoms of a dirty throttle body

  • The speed is XX;
  • Unstable operation of the internal combustion engine (vibration);
  • Dips when moving;
  • The engine does not develop power;
  • Difficulty starting;
  • Increased speed XX;

All of these symptoms may indicate contamination of the throttle assembly, and if these problems are detected in your car, the first thing you need to do is clean the throttle assembly.

ABOUT THE PREREQUISITES FOR ITS CLEANING

The following signs of a dirty throttle body should alert the driver that it is time to clean the throttle body:

  • The smooth transition from high to low speeds disappears. The motor may stop spontaneously;
  • It is very difficult to start the engine in the cold season. It may be accompanied by the smell of gasoline from the exhaust pipe;
  • When starting the engine, vibration and “triple” are observed, since there is not enough working mixture for all cylinders;
  • Inability to coast or engine braking.

To get rid of all this, you need to clean the throttle body. In some cases this happens earlier, in others later, but it is necessary to clean the throttle valve. The main culprits of pollution are small particles of dust, which still penetrate through the air filter, and the fuel mixture. When they get on the moving parts of this unit, they impede their movement, reduce the flow area of the intake tract, and clog the channel and rod of the idle speed sensor. Various sources recommend carrying out preventive work when a car runs away from 40 to 50 thousand km. When operating the car in areas with heavy dust, the car will not reach these mileage figures, the unit will clog earlier. Operation in areas where snow cover persists for a long time, this mileage may be even longer.

The quality of the fuel and engine oil used influences the timing of flushing the throttle assembly. Please also consider this issue very carefully.

Where is the remote control on Priora

The Priora throttle assembly is located on the intake manifold housing. It is equipped with idle speed control (IAC) and damper position sensors (DPS). Heating hoses are also connected to the throttle body, which drive heated coolant through the throttle, thereby ensuring the supply of warm air to the cylinders.

Heating of the dampers was abandoned when switching to an electronic throttle; in the E-GAZ system there is no heating of the throttle, as well as other sensors that control idle speed and damper position.

Throttle valve malfunctions and methods for eliminating them

Before we discuss diagnostics and symptoms of a bad throttle position sensor, let's talk about the importance of the sensor. The throttle position sensor plays a huge role in controlling the car’s engine, because thanks to its readings, the control unit calculates the proportions of fuel, as well as adjusting the ignition timing. If this sensor breaks down, the driver immediately receives an error notification via the control unit. An error notification appears on the instrument panel, namely, you will see the “Chek” light come on. Please note that the error that occurs solely indicates a malfunction in the throttle position sensor circuit, but cannot localize it. That is, if the sensor settings are violated, the unit will not be able to recognize the error.

To eliminate a breakdown, every driver needs to know the basic signs of a malfunction. Many drivers, when faced with such a problem, decide to clean or replace the throttle valve, but after this the speed may increase. In order to return to the previous speed, you need to adjust the throttle, and we will tell you exactly how to do this a little later.

The electrical engine management system detects faults related to wire breaks or short circuits. There may be some signs of malfunction in the ignition and power system. Also, as a result of a breakdown, air may leak through the so-called throttle valve or the speed may increase. The revolutions have certain external signs, but error codes are not marked in the memory of the electrical unit. Let's look at the main signs of breakdowns:

Throttle valve device

  • Slight difficulty when starting the engine;
  • Dips or jerks are felt during engine operation;
  • Fairly low power;
  • Frequent occurrence of detonation;
  • Failing, holding and twitching;
  • Engine operation with minor interruptions;
  • Increased fuel consumption;
  • In the exhaust system, when gasoline is processed, a specific gasoline smell arises;
  • Instability during engine operation, and stopping during cold operation;
  • Sometimes the fuel mixture spontaneously ignites;
  • Some popping noises are heard in the intake manifold or muffler.

If you find any of the above malfunctions, but the self-diagnosis system does not detect a fault code using the throttle position sensor, there is no need to make hasty conclusions and change it. In this case, the malfunctions you discover may be caused by completely different reasons.

Differences between E-GAS and mechanical.

E-GAS damper
The electronic damper is more modern and unpretentious; it does not have the problematic IAC and TPS sensors. All adjustments of the electronic throttle occur precisely by the position of the damper itself. Changing the position of the damper in the assembly is carried out by a worm mechanism receiving signals from the electronic gas pedal.

Mechanical damper

In a mechanical throttle, a separate sensor, called TPS, is responsible for the valve position, and the IAC is responsible for the idle speed. Changing its position is driven by a cable connected to the accelerator pedal inside the car.

External cleaning

You can clean the throttle valve on a VAZ-2114 without removing the entire assembly. There is one advantage - you will do all the work very quickly, but you will not be able to clean the inside this way. As a result, the channels in the throttle assembly may remain contaminated, but this will not change the situation - all the symptoms will continue to bother you. External dirt can be easily cleaned. For work, it is best to use a special spray for cleaning carburetors. But keep in mind that it is very aggressive, so it is advisable to work in protective equipment - a respirator and gloves. Do not allow liquid to get on plastic elements - it will corrode them.

The cleaning procedure is as follows:

  1. Remove the corrugation from the throttle assembly.
  2. Thoroughly spray all surfaces of the throttle body.
  3. Wait a little so that the liquid destroys as much dirt as possible.
  4. Use an old toothbrush to clean all surfaces of the throttle body. For maximum efficiency, manually open the damper slightly.
  5. Spray again and wipe all surfaces dry with a cloth.
  6. Reinstall the bellows and start the engine.

The method is simple, but it is unlikely to help get rid of serious stains. Therefore, it is best to completely disassemble the entire assembly and wash it.

Cleaning the throttle

To clean the damper from dirt, it is necessary to dismantle it from the car. This will require a number of tools and a little skill in car repair.

Required tool:

  • Phillips or flathead screwdriver;
  • Pliers;
  • Ratchet with extension head 13;
  • Carburetor cleaner;
  • New gasket for remote control;

All work should be performed with the negative terminal of the battery removed..

Cleaning the mechanical throttle

  • We begin to dismantle the damper; to do this, we unscrew the clamp of the air filter corrugation, the clamp of the crankcase ventilation pipe and the clamp from the mass air flow sensor. We take out the corrugation.

  • We unscrew the clamps of the throttle heating hoses and lift them up so that the coolant does not leak out.

  • Unscrew the clamps of the remaining two hoses from the top and bottom of the DZ.
  • Disconnect the TPS and IAC connectors
  • Next, unscrew the two bolts securing the DZ, use a ratchet with a head set to “13” and remove the damper. We dismantle the TPS and IAC dampers already removed.

Cleaning process

  1. Use carburetor cleaner to thoroughly rinse all areas of contamination. Particular attention should be paid to the channels of the idle air regulator, since it is in them that a large amount of dirt accumulates.
  2. Then we wash the valve itself to remove carbon deposits.
  3. We carry out assembly in reverse order.
  4. When assembling, pay special attention to the condition of the sealing ring on the IAC; it should fit tightly to the body and be free of burrs and cracks. Replace it if necessary.

Cleaning the electronic throttle E-GAS

Removing the electronic damper is a little quicker and easier.

IMPORTANT: Do not turn the valve with your fingers; flushing must be done without touching the valve. Otherwise, the mechanism may be damaged, which will lead to inevitable replacement of the remote control.

  • We unscrew the clamps of the air corrugation and dismantle it.
  • Then remove the connector from the remote control and unscrew the three nuts securing the throttle to the intake manifold.

Cleaning process

  1. Use carburetor cleaner to clean the throttle from carbon deposits; the cleaned surface should shine.
  2. We carry out assembly in reverse order.

How to clean the throttle of a VAZ 2110?

For cleaning, you can use carburetor cleaning fluid.

For high-quality cleaning, remove the TPS and IAC sensors and rinse those areas thoroughly. Especially, pay attention to the forced crankcase ventilation channel, especially if at the beginning, when the thickest pipe was removed, traces of oil were found in it. If this channel is heavily clogged, you can use wire (rod rod) or a knitting needle to clean it.

Ultimately, you should end up with something like this. On the left is a photo before cleaning, on the right is after.

Symptoms of DZ malfunction

The throttle mechanism quickly becomes dirty due to the fact that it is located in direct contact with combustion products. Plus, during the operation of the car, natural contamination of the internal protection occurs with various inclusions that enter through the filter membrane. Dust and dirt reduce the movement of the damper, the thermal gap decreases, and in turn the channel capacity decreases.

You can understand that the throttle valve needs cleaning by the following signs:

  1. During frosts, starting the VAZ-2114 engine is very problematic, and when starting the engine you can’t hear the smell of exhaust gases. In a closed room you can often hear the strong smell of gasoline.
  2. Due to the lack of air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinders, vibration occurs when the power unit is started, and at low speeds the vehicle jerks.
  3. There is no smoothness when releasing the gas pedal and when switching from high to low speeds.

Damper position sensor

Another device that directly affects the operation of the entire injection system. It is he who makes it clear to the electronic control unit at what angle the damper is open. There are two types of sensors:

  1. Resistive, which are based on a simple potentiometer (variable resistor, like on volume controls).
  2. Encoders are non-contact.

The first type changes the resistance depending on the position of the slider on the active element. In other words, it is contact, so friction does a lot of “dirty tricks”. The active part wears out, as a rule, at the very beginning of the runner's stroke. And at idle the speed will jump - the resistance changes over large intervals.

At speed these symptoms disappear. Contactless devices work much better. If you are cleaning the throttle valve on a VAZ-2114 1.6 8 valves or 16, pay attention to the type of sensor. If it is resistive, then it may have failed or dust may have gotten inside. It is useless to clean and restore; it is better to replace the device. You can only clean it from the outside - you shouldn’t go inside.

How to replace the throttle assembly on a VAZ 2113-VAZ 2115?

Removal: 1) At the very beginning of the operation, loosen the screw (Indicated by the red arrow) that holds the clamp clamp, which in turn holds the end of the air intake pipe (The end is indicated by the blue arrow), after which disconnect the end of the pipe from the throttle assembly by hand, if you need To interfere with all this is a small crankcase ventilation hose that is connected to the place indicated by the green arrow, then disconnect this hose (As you can see in the photo, this hose is already disconnected), it is disconnected in the same way as the air intake pipe, that is, the screw has been loosened a little and then disconnect the hose, thereby you will provide yourself with access to the throttle assembly itself and it will be much easier to unscrew the nuts securing it.

2) Then disconnect three or four hoses (On some cars there may be three, and on some four, the fourth hose will only be on those cars that are equipped with an adsorber) from the three or four fittings that are located on the throttle assembly, for clarity in the photo below the fittings are indicated by red arrows and the hoses that are connected to them are blue, the hoses are disconnected from the fittings in the same way as the air intake pipe, that is, the screws are loosened and after which the hoses are disconnected, but there is just one caveat, before disconnecting the hoses, be sure to cool drain the liquid from the cooling system (For information on how to drain the coolant, read the article: “Replacing coolant in a VAZ”).

Diagnostics and cleaning of IAC

Be sure to check its condition - there should be no dirt on it. Remove the regulator and connect it to the wiring block (the ignition must be on). The rod should retract completely and extend a few millimeters. Visually assess the condition of the device to see if there is any damage to it. Very often, the cause of unstable speed is a weakened or burst spring. In this case, it will need to be replaced. Cleaning the throttle valve on a VAZ-2114, done by yourself, still won’t hurt.

Use a multimeter to measure between contacts 1 and 2 - the resistance should be in the range of 50-80 ohms. If it is slightly different, there is no need to panic. There should be no resistance between the other contacts. To clean the device, you need to use a penetrating lubricant (spray for cleaning carburetors is not suitable, as it melts the plastic). Be sure to treat the contacts - if they are oxidized, voltage will not be supplied. Using a ruler or caliper, measure the distance from the IAC body to the end of the needle - it should be 23 mm, deviations are not allowed.
