VAZ 21126 (1.6-16cl):
Pros:
- Quiet operating sound and no vibration.
- The best acceleration dynamics of all the engines presented, the most powerful engine in the Lad line.
- It does not ask for valve adjustments; without any possible repairs, it only asks for an oil and filter change.
Minuses:
- If the timing belt breaks, the valves bend.
Skills to check engine number:
First, look at what the engine number should look like on a obviously “clean” car and take it as a standard when inspecting used cars with the same engine. A small example from our work. What design features does the tensioner have?
The design of the component we are considering is very simple. There are also simple procedures for its repair or installation. Even an inexperienced LADA Granta owner can install the alternator belt tensioner.
Manufacturers design tensioning devices according to individual projects, implying the subsequent integration of this unit into the overall design of a specific brand and model. But most of these products are equipped with similar components, namely:
- a bracket for the possibility of fixing on the motor block;
- belt tension roller;
- device traction;
- bolt securing the roller.
The bracket is secured to the motor using three or 4 studs.
The bearing is the most vulnerable component. It has been experimentally confirmed that this component is constantly in rotation mode and makes an incredible number of revolutions, prematurely wasting its own resource reserve.
Once the belt is removed, the bearing assembly is fairly easy to diagnose. A serviceable component should not be subject to play. Also, the bracket can cause a couple of disappointments. Over time, this component is subject to slight bending, and therefore the roller moves away from the plane of rotation of the belt drive. This defect is typical not only for cars that already have an impressive mileage behind them. Sometimes the alternator belt tensioner can be found in a bent state on new LADA Granta cars, which raises suspicions of a factory defect.
Note that the tension roller also suffers from frequent breakdowns. This circumstance implies a weakening of the belt tension, causing malfunctions in the functionality of the generator. Diagnosing such a defect is quite simple. To do this, you will need to loosen the belt and rotate the roller idle. The rotation process should be accompanied by ease and absence of noise effect. If other suspicious signs are present, then the designated element is replaced without any doubt.
Engine number location
The number must be indicated in the application documents and must be stamped on the car’s engine body. It is important to find out its location, for example, to check a used car being purchased. Now on online services, on the official website of the traffic police, you can check the history of the car. Based on the vehicle certificate number, car number, information about road accidents will be provided, if there were any, and if they were recorded. It will contain detailed information about which parts were damaged, etc. But the engine number cannot be checked using a special online service; suddenly the owner replaced the engine, got it from a salvage yard for cheap, and so on. Therefore, it is important to compare the engine number with the number in the application documents.
Tools for finding the engine number:
- manual, instructions, operating manual;
- vehicle registration certificate (vehicle PTS);
- detergent (Fairy is perfect);
- flashlight;
- a mirror with a long handle (if the number is stamped in a place that is difficult for visual inspection).
Finding the number on a car engine
If there is a number and it matches this car (if it is not listed as stolen), then this is a guarantee of ownership of movable property.
First of all, open the hood and admire the engine and its condition (cleanliness). But even on a clean, well-washed engine, it is not so easy to find the serial number.
Where the number can be located:
- On the cylinder block on the right or left.
- In the area of the dipstick for checking the oil level (or rather, under the dipstick).
- Where the belt is located.
- Where the engine connects to the transmission is for front wheel drive vehicles.
- On a bracket that is designed for hanging and removing the motor.
- At the base of the intake manifold.

On vintage engines, the number was indicated on an aluminum plate. Therefore, it was easy to check the number on them, but over time, the numbers on them can be erased or worn off.
Decoding
To examine the stamped numbers, the Kalina engine needs to be thoroughly cleaned, at least in the right place. Use a cloth soaked in gasoline or diesel fuel for this. For convenience, it is also advisable to remove the air filter with pipes - this way you will get direct access to the location.
State Traffic Inspectorate employees usually use a special mirror when comparing identifiers, but if the number is covered with dirt, it will be of little help.
The motor marker is made in two lines. The first indicates its type (for example, 11194), and the second indicates the number itself, consisting of 7 consecutive digits (01234567).
The body identifier is a rather long sequence that includes not only numbers, but also letters. So, at the beginning there is the abbreviation XTA. In the international classifier it is designated as the Volzhsky Automobile Plant.
The next 5 digits allow you to determine the modification of the car - 11193. This is followed by the year (for example, 06 is 2006). Below is the body number itself. It, like the engine, has a seven-digit rating.
There is one more nuance - the year of manufacture until 2009 was written in numbers, but since 2010 they began to use letters. For example, 2012 is Latin C, and 2013 is D, and so on.
During the comparison process, it is necessary to take into account that the marks on the wheel arch and the shock absorber must match - the slightest inaccuracies call into question the legality of Kalina.

Volkswagen vehicle VIN numbers. Where are the body and engine numbers located? To improve the performance of the 11183 engine, several types of tuning can be used:
Practice shows that chip tuning for 8-valve internal combustion engines is not effective, and turbocharging leads to increased wear of parts, so these methods are rarely used.
Thus, the 11183 motor has a serious advantage - it does not bend the valves with pistons when the timing belt drive breaks. However, there are a number of shortcomings that were corrected only in later versions of engines from the manufacturer AvtoVAZ.
What to do if there is no engine number
There are fans who prefer to buy old foreign cars than new Russian ones. Here you need to understand that there are no numbers on old-style engines from the USA. Therefore, in this case, it would be wise to store the purchase and sale agreement, customs clearance documents, etc. This is not as small as it might seem at first glance. In 2012, AvtoVAZ launched the newest engine number 21116 with 8 valves and a displacement of 1.6, the main difference from 11183 is a lightweight piston (due to it, power has increased, but the engine has become plug-in). For now, this engine is installed only on the Grant, which came to replace the Kalina sedan, but I think in the future it will also be installed on Kalinas.
Cancel engine verification
In the spring of 2011, a law came into force in our country according to which it is allowed to register a car without checking the make of the unit.
There is no longer a mark on the car's registration documents. The deregistration operation has been greatly simplified; now the presence of the owner is not required, all actions are performed automatically.
If a person sells a car to a person with whom they live in the same area, they are allowed to keep the old license plates .
When to change?
VAZ Lada Kalina vehicles use a belt drive for auxiliary units. On cars with air conditioning, the service life of such a belt is no more than 30 thousand km. On simple versions of cars, the strap can last longer, but most owners try to change it after the same 30 thousand kilometers traveled. For various reasons, the belt may fail earlier, so it must be checked periodically during vehicle operation. There should be no cracks on the working track, and delamination on the outer part of the belt is unacceptable. If such defects are present, we immediately change the strap. Another signal to replace this element is a whistle or other noise when the unit is operating.

Mark detection problems
During operation, the motor is necessarily covered with a layer of dirt.
It does not allow you to quickly see the numbering of the unit. Therefore, experienced car owners are advised to always clean the engine and wash it. Some manufacturers place the engine markings in a place where they can only be seen using a small mirror. For example, in a Ford car, it is stamped on the very bottom panel , right under the attached oil filter. 1. Does a galvanized body not rust?
Even if, when buying a car, when asked whether Granta is galvanized or not, the dealer gives you a positive answer, it’s too early to calm down. Due to the very thin coating layer and its partial nature, rapid reduction of the galvanizing layer is guaranteed.
Without additional treatment, the body will still rust.
2. Does a new car require additional body work?
Factory protection is imperfect. Even a new car requires preventive anti-corrosion treatment. During operation, the body coating is subjected to strong mechanical stress, causing cracking of the coating, moisture entering the cavities and corrosion of body elements.
3. Does the aluminum body not rust?
