At various times, production car models used both small single-cylinder internal combustion engines and huge units with 16 cylinders. On different models, the combustion chambers are located and numbered differently, and this information will be very useful for a novice car enthusiast.
How are the cylinders located in engines?
There are different engine models - these include vintage one- and two-cylinder internal combustion engines, traditional in-line four- and six-cylinder models.
Larger units had V-shaped blocks - such units could have eight or more combustion chambers.
Row arrangement
With an in-line arrangement in the block, the cylinders are arranged in one row. In this configuration, there are two, three, four, five and even six-cylinder engines.
Two- and three-cylinder internal combustion engines are now installed on modern cars less often, although their popularity is slowly gaining momentum.
This was facilitated by smart fuel mixture preparation systems and turbines - for example, a turbocharged version of the two-cylinder internal combustion engine of the Fiat 500 hatchback. The three-cylinder in-line engine can be found on the Daewoo Matiz and many others.
As for the in-line “four”, such blocks are installed in most engines for passenger cars - the volumes of such engines start from 1 liter, and the largest in-line internal combustion engine is 2.4 liters. and more.
In-line five-cylinder engines began appearing in mass-produced cars in the 1970s. Among the first are Mercedes diesel models - they were installed in 1974 on the W123 model.
And already in 1976 they built a five-cylinder engine from Audi. Starting from the late 80s, the inline five no longer surprised anyone and was successfully installed on a variety of cars from Fiat, Volvo and other auto brands.
The straight-six, which was very popular in Europe in the 80s and 90s, has now become an endangered species.
It’s not worth talking about eight-cylinder models - they said goodbye to this arrangement long ago back in the 30s.
Why? As the volumes increased, the blocks also grew larger. This created a lot of problems for designers and engineers during layout.
For example, it was possible to squeeze an inline eight into a front-wheel drive car in only two cases - the Austin Maxi 2200, which was produced in the 60s, and the Volvo S80.

How to make a large inline internal combustion engine shorter and more compact?
The engine can be “cut” in half, set the two parts side by side and have the pistons rotate one crankshaft. These motors are shaped like the letter “V”.
Here the combustion chambers are arranged in two rows at an angle to each other. This configuration is very popular among manufacturers and is second only to the in-line “four”.
The most popular models are those where the block camber angle is 60 and 90 degrees. In this configuration you can find six-, eight-, twelve-cylinder engines.
The first such power unit appeared on the Lancia Aurelia, it was 1950. Due to its compact size, the car quickly became popular among motorists.
The eight combustion chambers in this configuration are arranged four in two rows. This is the most compact layout for large-volume internal combustion engines. The largest volume in the entire history of the automotive industry in this V-layout was 13 liters. In the case of twelve cylinders, the only difference is their number.
With offset
Designers and engineers were looking for a compromise solution to create a powerful and at the same time compact power unit for passenger cars in the middle class. The offset engine is a six-cylinder V-block.
The cylinders are located opposite each other in a checkerboard pattern. Six cylinders at an angle of 15 degrees form a fairly narrow and short unit. Examples include the VR6, which was installed on the Golf from Volkswagen.
Opposite type
As you know, on a V-shaped block the camber angle of the two parts is 90 or 60 degrees. If the camber angle between the two parts is 180 degrees, then it is a boxer engine.
Here the cylinders are located opposite each other, horizontally. The crankshaft in such models is common, installed in the center, and the pistons move from it.
One of the first such designs was a domestic development, which was used in the construction of the Rossiya airship. By the way, despite the advanced design of the internal combustion engine, the airship did not take off into the sky. You can also recall the French units from Gorbon-Brille.
And the one who developed and launched the traditional boxer engine familiar to everyone is Ferdinand Porsche. The first batch of Zhuk cars was equipped with these internal combustion engines in 1937.
A similar design was used on Ford A, C, F. In 1920, the Bavarian automobile concert proposed its own design of a boxer engine.
Motors W
In these power units, a number of combustion chambers are connected to a VR arrangement. In each row, the cylinders are placed at an angle of 15 degrees.
Both rows are at an angle of 72 degrees. In the case of an eight-cylinder engine, the block consists of two V-shaped blocks that are at an angle of 72 degrees.
Numbering of cylinders in different types of internal combustion engines
As for the standards for numbering combustion chambers, there are none. The way they are numbered in the internal combustion engine is influenced by the following factors:
- Type of drive;
- ICE type, block layout;
- Transverse or longitudinal arrangement of the unit under the hood;
- Side of rotation.
On standard front-wheel drive cars with a transversely mounted engine, the numbering begins on the timing side. So, near the timing belt there is the first cylinder and then all the others. The latter is located near the checkpoint.
How can I find out the engine number and model by VIN code?
The absence or unreadability of numbers on the main units of motor vehicles or the absence/unreadability of a duplicate information plate leads to the impossibility of carrying out registration actions with the vehicle in the MREO.
Cars with damaged signs are sent for examination, during which the originality of the data presented is established.
To avoid problems with the examination, you must first check the specified unit numbers yourself. This can be done by knowing the VIN number of the vehicle.
A unique license plate number can be found:
- in the main documents of the car, such as the title and registration certificate;
- by car. VIN code plates can be located in different places, depending on the make and model of the vehicle;
- online, if you know vehicle registration plates (information can be obtained on the RSA website).
Next, you need to decipher the VIN number. You can do this in three ways:
- Independently, using various decryption tables developed by world standards (number structure and encryption of manufacturer data) and by the manufacturer (vehicle data). Information about the engine model, body type, chassis, and so on is indicated in 4 to 7 characters.
- In person or through an official representative (based on a notarized power of attorney), contact the traffic police with a request to decipher the VIN number. When applying, a written application is submitted, to which are attached documents confirming the right to receive information (car document) and documents that establish the identity of the applicant. Information with decoding of wines can be received by letter sent by mail or email. Application processing time is up to 14 days.
- Online, using special decoding programs located on specialized websites (for example, Autocode) or websites of online stores that sell automobile spare parts (for example,).
So, the easiest and fastest way to obtain the necessary information about the engine is to decrypt the identification number online.
Anyone with virtually no understanding of modern technology can do all the work, since the presented diagram is quite simple:
- First of all, you need to go to the site where decryption will be performed. It should be remembered that some Internet resources, such as Autocode and Autobot, provide detailed information on VIN for a fee. The cost of one check can vary from 150 to 350 rubles. Unlike third-party Internet resources, on online store websites, as a rule, the necessary information can be obtained for free. For example, let's decrypt the VIN code on the website;
- To gain access to the resources of the Internet site, preliminary registration of a personal account is required. During registration, you must indicate: user category (individual or legal entity), service region and address of the nearest office for receiving orders, full name, mobile phone number and email address;
- Next, you need to go to the “Request by VIN” tab and indicate the previously received vehicle identification number in the provided field;
After the check, which takes from 15 seconds to 1 minute, basic information about the car will appear on the screen:
- vehicle model;
- year of manufacture of the car;
- model, power and engine displacement.

- modification;
- car model code;
- steering wheel location;
- interior and exterior colors;

The check can be carried out:
- directly at the traffic police department or at a stationary post - traffic police officers will provide information at the request of any driver;
- through the expert bureau.
The first method does not always give 100% results. Since the database of stolen vehicles is not updated instantly. The information may not “get through” at the time of verification and the answer may be negative.
But at the same time, the car does not actually belong to the seller. The second method is more accurate. There are special expert bureaus.
Moreover, the check is carried out not only against databases. Fraudsters working as an organized group steal cars and forge documents and engine numbers.

Body of the new VAZ 2108
The production of front-wheel drive cars has been tempting designers since time immemorial, although a comprehensive switch to such a conveyor belt at the global level began only in the mid-70s. The disadvantages of front-wheel drive cars were considered to be the unsatisfactory condition of the entire node circuit. Handling, engine and suspension left much to be desired.
On the other hand, the mere fact that the internal combustion engine was located transversely when the front drive wheels were in operation made it possible to transform a small class car into an ultra-compact and lightweight version of the vehicle. VAZ adopted such designs in 1971, and first a couple of experimental samples were manufactured at the car plant. As for the G8, this front-wheel drive car was released in 1978, although it was put on the production line only in 1984.
VAZ 2108 new body
The advantage of the G8 was considered to be that certain of its units and mechanisms were made crossed with parts from such a grandee of the auto world as Porshe.
The exterior of the G8 at first implied the presence of a shortened wing at the front. In fact, this approach was determined to be not very practical, since the plastic component soon deteriorated and stretched under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. Then another project came into force, implying a different, modernized design of the front part of the G8. These were similar parts, but noticeably elongated. The front end has been modernized with a new grille with a modern “face”.

Cars with a body like a VAZ 2108
The “Eight” is rightly called the first car with front-wheel drive after the “classics”. With the release of a new conveyor, a new production line opens, from which not only “eights”, but also “nines” come out.
It is noteworthy that the “eight” marked the beginning of a new series of cars called “chisel” due to the angular shape of the hatchback body.

VAZ 2114 engine number: what you need to know about it
The driver begins to think about changing the engine when, for some reason, he is no longer satisfied with the operation of the standard equipment. In general, the 2107 model is excellent for various kinds of technical experiments and tuning, but the rational approach to choosing new equipment has not yet been canceled.

- VAZ 2114;
- "Lada Niva";
- "Lada Priora".
These are more modern power units with an increased number of “horses”. In addition, the engine dimensions and connection connectors are almost identical to the standard equipment of the “Seven”.
Engines from foreign cars
Imported engines are rightfully considered more reliable and durable, so the idea of installing a foreign-made engine in a VAZ 2107i often excites the minds of drivers. It must be said that this idea is quite feasible if we take Nissan and Fiat models from 1975–1990 as donors.
The thing is that Fiat became the prototype of the domestic Zhiguli, so structurally they have a lot in common. And Nissan is also technically similar to Fiat. Therefore, without significant modifications, you can install engines from these foreign cars on the VAZ 2107.

Rotary power units
On "sevens" rotary engines are not that uncommon. In fact, due to the specifics of their work, rotor mechanisms can significantly optimize the operation of the VAZ 2107i and give the car acceleration and power.
An economical rotary engine ideal for the 2107 is a modification of the RPD 413i. The 1.3-liter unit develops power up to 245 horsepower. The only thing the driver should know about in advance is the drawback of the RPD 413i - a service life of 75 thousand kilometers.

Today, the VAZ 2107i is no longer produced. At one time it was a good car at an affordable cost for living and working. What to do if there is no number
Oxidative processes have a destructive effect on certain areas of the metal car body. Corrosion can completely or partially “destroy” the place where the manufacturer applied the engine code. When the unit identifier is barely visible, you can advise car owners to clean the surface of rust themselves. It is advisable to use not very strong concentrates so as not to damage the remaining inscription. Some people recommend using sandpaper, but this is prohibited! Rust has eaten away the engine code
Even if the motor identifier is not indicated anywhere, it should be in the traffic police database. However, before buying a used car, you need to carefully look for the VIN code or serial number. If they are not visible, it is better to refuse the purchase.
