Types of fasteners

Here are the types of fasteners needed for alloy wheels:

Characteristics of bolts and nuts

Bolts and nuts differ in design features, so the choice is determined by the type of disk. The stamped disc is made from a durable type of steel. Moreover, it has a small thickness at the point of attachment to the central part of the rotating part. For an optimal connection, the bolt and nut must have a flat surface. The composition of cast wheels includes relatively light alloys. They have reduced reliability characteristics. The fastening system of the products is made in the form of a cone.

Preparatory work before adjusting valves

I would like to note right away that the adjustment is made on a cold engine. If the engine was started before adjustment, it is recommended to cool it to +20 degrees. The temperature can be controlled on the instrument panel. If, say, the car sat in the garage overnight and the engine temperature dropped to +15 degrees, then there is no need to warm it up to +20 - this is insanity (I adjusted it exactly at +15 degrees).

Go ahead. Before you begin adjusting the 8 valve engine on the Lada Granta, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory work.

1 Step. We hang up the right front wheel and engage 5th gear.

At the first stage, you can immediately jack up the right front wheel (so that it can be easily turned) and engage fifth gear. This will make it more convenient to “turn” the engine to rotate the camshaft and align the marks on the camshaft pulley and the plastic timing case. Don't forget to keep the car stationary. To do this, put the car on the handbrake or place chocks under the rear wheels.

How to measure yourself

Measurements must be as accurate as possible, since the indicators differ in close values ​​with a distance of a couple of millimeters, for example, 98 and 100 or 110 and 112, and they are not interchangeable. To eliminate errors, it is recommended to use a caliper or ruler.

Adjacent holes

Here's how to determine the distance between bolt holes. The dimensions of the circle on which the holes are located are taken. The diameter is determined using compatibility tables or by measuring using a ruler. The resulting distance between adjacent fasteners should be multiplied by a factor that depends on the number of holes. The circumference of a VAZ is 9.8 cm, and that of passenger cars is 139.7 millimeters.

Far holes

A simple measurement method is carried out on models with an even number of recesses - for 4, 6, 8 fasteners. Parallel Hole Distance – PCD.

And here’s how the far holes of disks with five bolts are measured: the calculation is made between non-adjacent recesses, the resulting figure should be multiplied by 1.051.

Hub window diameter

Indicative data for the central hub window are indicated in the table and in the complete bolt pattern formula. In the absence of information, readings are measured with a ruler or caliper. The diameter of the hub area on the VAZ 2110 = 58.6 mm.

The bolt pattern is carried out taking into account the relative size of the vertical axis of symmetry of the disk to the area adjacent to the hub.

Practical advice

In order not to repeat the mistakes of novice car enthusiasts, I want to give you some tips.

They will definitely come in handy when repairing a LADA Granta car:

— buy bearings only from trusted sellers. Preferably in a car store, and not in your hands;

- do not buy a cheap product. The price, of course, tempts you, but then you will have to replace the product again.

- You may not have to replace the rear wheel bearing. Just try tightening the nut with a torque wrench. If the hum goes away, you can continue driving.

- if you have already undertaken to replace the bearing on one side of the car, it is advisable to do it on the other, even if it cannot be replaced. Its resource has also been exhausted. After a short period of time it will need to be replaced.

Full and abbreviated bolt pattern formula

Manufacturers provide detailed wording that reflects all important meanings. Motorists use abbreviations that do not fully describe the product.

Abbreviated

PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) is a short formulation that includes two parameters. It is indicated: 4×98 – wheel bolt pattern on a VAZ-2110. The number of four indicates the number of bolt recesses. The number 98 was obtained as a result of the transverse method of measuring their circumference.

Let's look at an example: the full bolt pattern formula is indicated on the rim: 7.5 J×15 H2 5×100 ET 40 D 54.1.

Decoding of alphanumeric groups means:

  • 5 JX 15 – rim width 7.5 inches and diameter 15 inches;
  • X – indicates that the disc is made by casting or forging;
  • J – it is recommended to use the product on single-wheel drive vehicles;
  • JJ – marking of all-wheel drive models;
  • H2 – the number of protrusions that secure the tires. Models with one protrusion - H1. Absence of protrusions - marking AN;
  • Hump ​​- indicates high-quality rubber retention; this feature eliminates depressurization.

Disc brake systems "Tornado"

Consequences from another bolt pattern

Using inappropriate bolts is a safety hazard. When a bolt pattern occurs, an axial displacement of the entire wheel relative to the hub occurs. At high speeds, the wheel spins unevenly, the car will shake, which is accompanied by a beating in the steering wheel.

When installing wheels, car enthusiasts often encounter such a problem as a discrepancy in the diameter of the fasteners. In this case, eccentric bolts with a movable conical part are suitable, which will eliminate discrepancies in size.

Tightening fasteners on alloy wheels

Before installing the bolts into the mounting recesses, it is recommended to treat the hardware with graphite lubricant. As a result, when it comes into contact with the disk, the head of the bolt or nut will rotate and make full contact. This will prevent blocking during starting power due to friction between the disc and the mounting system. Bolts are produced that compensate for minimal deviations in fastener dimensions. A loose connection will lead to cyclical failures in the fastening system; the bolts and nuts will begin to unscrew themselves.

Adjusting the wheel bearing VAZ 2107

Let's take a closer look at the process using a classic example. This will also be useful for owners of Niva, Kopek cars, and the entire model range of classic Lada cars. There are two ways:

  1. Using a torque wrench (according to the manual), which everyone always has ready in their garages.
  2. Using traditional methods, by touch, “by eye”. In this case, we will only need “straight” hands and the key to “27”.

Let's consider both methods

The only difference will be in the use of special tools and the right hands.

1. Hanging the wheel on a jack

2. Remove the protective cap to gain access to the hub nut.

3. Use a sharp object (a thin screwdriver, a sharpened rod) to unlock the edges of the nut. It is recommended to replace it with a new one. Since after repeated adjustment, the old crimping points on the sides of the nut may not coincide with the grooves on the steering knuckle axis.

4. In case of replacing new bearings, turn the wheel in different directions. Some people recommend hitting it vertically several times. This is necessary so that the rollers of the new bearings take their position in the hub race.

5. Tighten the nut. Using a torque wrench – 1.9-2 kg/cm. if without it, go all the way, but without fanaticism. We rotate the wheel again several times in different directions. We check for play. In this case it shouldn't exist.

6. Loosen the nut and tighten it with a force of 0.7 kg. Without a “fashionable” key - a little looser than the previous tightening.

7. Loosen the adjusting nut half way or 20 degrees. I think not everyone will be able to accurately calculate these 20 degrees. Therefore, we divide the edge of the nut in half and unscrew it to this distance.

8. Check the play by rocking the wheel in a vertical direction. The backlash will be minimal.

9. If you are doing this for the first time and do not know what the play should be, then it is recommended to loosen the nut a little more and try how the wheel will play. You can compare whether it has become larger or not. Tighten the nut until it becomes barely noticeable.

10. Lower the car from the jack and lock the hub nut. It is advisable to do this with the car lowered. This way you will avoid a barely noticeable shift in the adjusting tightening of the nut. In the lower position, the wheel will be locked together with the hub, which will prevent them from turning.

11. Check the presence of lubricant in the protective cap. If necessary, we change it.

Locking bolts for alloy wheels

Secret bolts for alloy wheels are another subtype. If you install locks, car tires will be protected from theft. You won't be able to remove the wheel with a regular wrench. To unwind the secrets, you will need a key that comes with them in one set.

When selecting fasteners for wheels, you should remember that cast products are relatively thick. Accordingly, longer bolts are selected for them than for stamped discs.

  • width;

The standard rim width of the VAZ-2107 of various models ranges from 5 to 5.5 inches. This size is of great importance for the directional stability of the car; the coefficient of adhesion to the road surface depends on it. Symbol: 5.0J or 5.5J.

The bolt pattern in production models is indicated by the symbols 4x98, where 4 is the number of holes for mounting bolts, 98 is the diameter in millimeters of the circle on which they are located. To put it simply, 98 mm is the distance between the central axes of opposite holes. Novice car enthusiasts underestimate another important parameter. The diameter of the hole itself affects the reliability of fastening the wheel to the hub; it must be taken into account when choosing mounting bolts.

Overhang is the distance between the plane of contact of the disk with the hub and the plane that conventionally cuts the rim in the center. There are positive and negative offsets. In the first case, the wheel is recessed into the arch, in the second it is moved towards its outer boundary or even protrudes beyond it. The standard offset of VAZ-2107 wheels is positive and amounts to 29 mm (ET29).

The centering hole for production models is marked with DIA 58.5. The numbers indicate the hub diameter in millimeters. The value of this parameter is important when choosing new disks; if the centering values ​​do not match, a special sealing ring is additionally purchased. The tightness of the fit of the central hole of the disk to the hub is a determining factor; the correct operation of the tires and the absence of “runout” of the wheel depend on it.

Selection principles

The selection of wheels is made taking into account the design features of the vehicle and operating conditions, assessing the impact of many factors.

The VAZ-2107 on 14 wheels looks more attractive than the standard version, but it must be taken into account that a new light-alloy version will lead to additional financial costs due to a change in tire size.

A car with 15 rims looks beautiful, but requires the use of low-profile tires, otherwise the tires will rub against the wheel arch protection. Operation in off-road conditions, maximum loading of the trunk with this option is fraught with negative consequences.

Wide wheels with a long offset increase stability, but tend to heavily pollute the car in bad weather conditions. The large curb weight of the car leads to friction between the tires and the fender liners.

The selection of accessories is carried out taking into account the correspondence of the parameters of the tires used to the standard sizes of the wheels. Dimensions of 13 inches exclude the use of wide-profile tires due to the small volume of the wheel arch.

Choosing non-standard wheels means replacing car tires. It is necessary to take into account the acceptable tire sizes for the VAZ-2107 recommended by experts:

  • diameter 13-15 inches;
  • width 165-185 mm;
  • tire profile – 55-80%.

According to the regulations, the timing belt needs to be replaced every 75,000 km. The advice applies to VAZ-11183, 11186 and 21116 engines. All of them are 8-valve and are installed in Grant cars. Let's consider replacement steps.

Preparatory operations, all engines

First, remember a simple rule: the 11183 engine cannot bend its valves, so you can rotate the crankshaft and camshaft pulley separately. For motors 11186 and 21116 this would be unacceptable! Read more about engine 21116 in this material.

Before carrying out any work, disconnect the battery terminal (key 10), as well as the DPKV sensor. But first you need to remove the protective cover.

Unscrew the 4 bolts and remove the protection

To remove protection you need:

  • 11186/21116 - using a “5-point hexagon”, unscrew the 4 bolts on the upper part, which is then removed. And the lower part is also dismantled;
  • 11183 – use a 10mm wrench to unscrew the 3 fastening bolts.

It will not be difficult to cope with what is said above.

Disconnect the connector, unscrew one screw

The crankshaft position sensor (CPS) is disconnected from the connector (see photo). Then the fastening screw is unscrewed with a “10” wrench. The sensor itself must be removed.

Installation of all shafts according to marks

First check that the gear is in neutral. There is a rubber cover on the crankcase body closer to the clutch assembly. It needs to be removed.

Inspection window and rubber plug

The point is to achieve alignment of the marks on the flywheel and in the scale slot. When this is done, fix the flywheel with a screwdriver.

Of course, it is easier to perform such an operation with two people. Know that the desired position of the shaft corresponds to the alignment of marks AB and CD (see figure).

Timing drive in 8-valve engines

The crankshaft itself must be rotated to the right using a 17 or 19 key (motor 11183). The meaning of this is illustrated in the photo.

The alternator belt blocks access to the timing drive parts. You will have to loosen the fastening and remove this belt.

Use a 13mm wrench to loosen the lower mounting bolt. Then unscrew the upper fastening nut and remove the bolt. The generator casing is pressed against the engine and the structure is secured with wire. The belt can now be removed.

Installation of the alternator belt is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Secure the generator;
  2. Throw the belt over the pulleys, as shown in the photo;

  • Having engaged 5th gear, roll the car back.
  • Please be aware that reusing the alternator belt is a last resort. It would be better to buy a new part.

    Replacing the timing belt

    Make sure the engine flywheel has been correctly installed and secured (see above). Then, using a “17” or “19” wrench (ICE 11183), unscrew the screw holding the generator drive pulley. The pulley itself and the protective washer are then removed.

    Now you need to weaken the clamping force in the tension roller:

    11186/21116 – using a “15” round wrench, unscrew the fastening bolt 2-3 turns. The roller will “release” the belt automatically;

Automation will work to weaken

  • 11183 – use a 17 key to loosen the fastening nut. Then the roller itself is rotated clockwise.
  • All that remains is to replace it: a new part is installed in place of the old timing belt, and that’s it. Installation of the remaining parts is carried out in the reverse order.

    To increase downforce, the outer roller assembly is rotated counterclockwise. For engines 11186/21116, an additional requirement must be met: the two rectangular marks must coincide.

    Upon completion of installation, the marks AB and CD should also match. The drawing for them is given above.

    Tightening torques

    To perform installation correctly, you need a wrench with a force regulator. The value on it is set depending on the type of part:

    • Tension roller mounting screw (11186/21116) – 17-27 N*m;
    • Roller fastening nut (11183) – 30–36 N*m;
    • Generator pulley fastening – 105–110 N*m.

    First, the tension is adjusted on the roller, and then the fastening nut or bolt is tightened.

    Parts from the VAZ catalog

    Let’s immediately look at the list of VAZ components and special tools:

    • Tensioner roller for internal combustion engine 11183 – 2108-1006120, nut for it – 00001-0021647-21;
    • Timing belt (11183) – 2108-1006040-10;

    The tension roller of the "2108" family has two slots on one side. These slots should look “up”, that is, away from the engine.

    • Top cover – 21116-1006226-00, bottom cover – 21116-1006218-00.
