According to the AVTOVAZ operating manual, spark plugs are 8 cl. The Lada Granta engine must be replaced every 30 thousand kilometers. Like any other engine part, the spark plug has its own resource, which is highly undesirable to exceed.
Even if the spark plug is in good condition after 30,000 km, this does not mean that it will not fail over the next thousand kilometers. For this reason, spark plugs must be changed according to the regulations. If a spark plug malfunction is diagnosed before the above mileage, then it must also be replaced.
The first picture shows the A17DVRM spark plugs - this is the original set. The exact same ones were installed on the Grant from the factory. It is these candles that will be installed at the moment.
How to understand that spark plugs need to be replaced
As a rule, the failure of these elements of the ignition system is accompanied by obvious and indirect signs. For example, low-quality gasoline causes accelerated burnout of the electrodes, as a result of which the power unit begins to operate unevenly, intermittently, troits, etc.
When driving, there is a decrease in the power of the internal combustion engine, deterioration in traction, delays in the engine’s response to pressing the gas pedal, excessive fuel consumption, and a change in the color of the exhaust. However, the decrease in operating efficiency can be expressed less clearly, that is, the unit operates smoothly. It is for this reason that some drivers operate simple versions for 40-50 thousand km, far exceeding the permissible replacement intervals.
Also, the wear of these parts can be determined by external signs by unscrewing them from the engine. If access to them is not difficult, then the condition of the elements is assessed visually. Such manipulations allow you to check the gap between the electrodes and inspect carbon deposits.
Regarding the gap, each spark plug has a special marking. Among other symbols that characterize certain parameters of the product, information regarding the size of the gaps is also contained. As a rule, the gap is indicated by the number that appears last in the marking.
The gap is indicated in millimeters. There is also an option when there are no numbers in the markings. This suggests that for such a part the standard is 0.8 mm. An increase in the gap from the recommended value indicates the need to replace the element.
The main thing is to pay attention to whether all the candles are covered with soot or just some. It is their difference in appearance from each other that is a sign of the need for replacement.
By the way, it is recommended to change all spark plugs (as a set), and not one at a time, replacing only the most worn/damaged element.
Another reason to replace the entire set is defects in the ceramic insulator. Such defects include the presence of cracks that are filled with a characteristic brown coating; failure is also indicated by the appearance of a brown skirt on the electrode. This sign indicates that delamination of the steel body of the ceramic insulator is occurring.
After delamination, a gap is formed in which residual products of fuel combustion accumulate, as a result the junction of metal and ceramics becomes brown. If the joint has slightly changed color, then the candles can still be considered working, but if the skirt is large and has a dark shade, then it’s time to change the element.
What is the algorithm in the operation of the ignition unit?
By means of spark plug electrodes, a spark is generated in the combustion chamber, which allows the mixture to ignite. The operation of these components involves harsh conditions involving exposure to very high thermal and electrical loads. The temperature indicator of the spark plug electrodes of working spark plugs can reach 900 degrees. In the Lada Granta ignition system, the spark plug arc discharge, which generates a spark, is characterized by a potential of 30 - 40 kV.
The severity of the operating mode of these elements directly affects the resource. Also very common is the appearance of carbon deposits on electrode surfaces, which is caused by disturbances in the combustion process.
We should not forget an important point related to the detrimental effect of unit overheating on the life of most components of the ignition circuit. It is candles that are subject to increased requirements in terms of ensuring the ability to function under conditions of increased thermal disturbances.
The stability of spark production at the electrodes indicates the normal functioning of both the spark plugs themselves and other components of the ignition unit. To ensure trouble-free operation of system components, the following postulates should be strictly observed:

Grant's trunk
- spark plugs are replaced only with those consumables that are approved by the regulatory requirements of AvtoVAZ;
- exclude violations of the frequency of replacement of components (the duration of operation of one set should not exceed 30 thousand km);
- perform maintenance actions with the required regularity;
- tend to use motor oil and fuel only capable of having high-quality conditions.
Design, features and types of spark plugs
Although progress is not worth it, nothing has been invented to replace spark plugs. Moreover, it has not changed much during its existence. The main components of a candle are:
- Central electrode
- Side electrode
- Frame
- Insulator
- Seals
The design is very simple: the central electrode is placed in a ceramic insulator. The ends of this electrode protrude from the insulator - on one side a contact terminal is put on it, through which the electrode is connected to the high-voltage wire leading from the ignition coil. The second end of this electrode is the working end.
The insulator is placed inside a metal case, on the outside it has a thread for screwing into the hole in the block head, as well as a turnkey edge, which allows you to remove the spark plug if necessary. To prevent exhaust gases from passing between the housing and the insulator, seals are used.
The side electrode is welded to the body. It is directed towards the central one, but there is a gap between them.
It all works like this: the central electrode acts as a “plus” and is supplied with voltage from the coil, and the body, together with the side electrode, is a “minus”, since it is in contact with the metal elements of the engine, which are the “ground”.
In this case, voltage is not supplied to the central electrode constantly, but in pulses that are created by a breaker (carburetor models) or an electronic control unit (injection cars). And at the moment the pulse is given, an arc discharge jumps between the electrodes - a spark.
Candles are constantly being improved, and designers follow two paths - making additions to the design and using different materials for the manufacture of components. At the same time, everything is aimed at increasing performance indicators and service life.
As for additions to the design, there are candles additionally equipped with:
Spark plug with ring electrode
Candle with sharp electrode
Spark plug with resistor
- resistor;
- several side electrodes;
- one ring electrode instead of a side electrode;
- With pointed ends of the electrodes.
Regarding the material of manufacture, in many respects they concern only the central electrode. Initially it was made of steel, but over time it was changed to other metals and alloys. According to this criterion there are candles:
- with a copper core of the central or both electrodes;
- iridium;
- with platinum coated electrodes.
Where to buy quality goods?
Experts and drivers with extensive experience advise that when answering the question of how often it is necessary to inspect and change spark plugs, adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations. This is approximately 30,000 km of mileage by car.
“hot” product , which is used by unscrupulous businessmen. Counterfeit brands are offered everywhere. There is no need to talk about the quality of such a product. Car markets and some small shops on highways and city outskirts are considered a hot spot. Passing motorists buy the product, replace it, and after a short mileage are forced to repeat the replacement operation. This is usually already far from the place of purchase. Therefore, you should purchase goods from time-tested suppliers with an unblemished business reputation. Where can they give a quality guarantee?
In custody
I would like to remind you that, paradoxical as it may sound, you yourself should know the answer to the question of how often and when you need to change the spark plugs on your car. After all, you are its owner and, in most cases, the driver. Listen to the operation of the power unit and look at the speedometer. There is no need for a nanny in this matter!
Many car enthusiasts are well aware that the ease of starting, power, efficiency and stability of the engine in different modes depends on the quality and efficiency of combustion of the working fuel-air mixture. The spark plugs are responsible for igniting the mixture directly in the combustion chamber.
These parts produce an electric spark to ignite the fuel charge. Moreover, in some cases, elements are considered to be so-called “consumables” with a limited service life. Today, products from various manufacturers are available for sale; each manufacturer claims a certain service life for their products, that is, after how many km. change spark plugs.
As a rule, for various types of internal combustion engines, such products can be conventional or with an extended service life. Based on the manufacturer’s specific data, you can clearly understand how long it takes to change different types of spark plugs. However, despite all the apparent simplicity, in practice the situation is somewhat different.
In this article we will look at when to change spark plugs and how often to change spark plugs, how to understand when it is time to change spark plugs. We will also answer frequently asked questions about how long spark plugs last and what affects their service life, how to replace spark plugs correctly and whether it is possible to change spark plugs one at a time, how much it costs to replace spark plugs, why change spark plugs if the old ones work, etc.
A little history
Spark plugs appeared along with the gasoline engine. Interestingly, the general concept of this element has changed little since its introduction. Of course, this element is constantly being improved, new technologies are being developed to improve its performance.
Interestingly, the first spark plugs used on cars were dismountable. This was due to the fact that the operating features of power plants of those years left much to be desired, and gasoline was not of high quality. Therefore, the spark plugs became clogged with wear products very quickly. But any auto mechanic could remove the spark plug, disassemble it, clean it, put it back in place, and it would continue to work. Non-separable spark plugs, which after stopping work were simply replaced with new ones, were proposed by G. Ford.
Power Sport
These racing spark plugs are designed to improve fuel economy, provide smooth acceleration and quick starts. They are sealed and have a 100 percent copper core for durability and improved heat transfer. They have multi-fin isolators to prevent misfire and are designed to work with performance modifications.
Your car will perform noticeably better as soon as you install these spark plugs. They increase the power of your vehicle and provide good gas mileage. Additionally, you can use these spark plugs in lawn mowers, leaf blowers, generators, and ATVs.
However, there have been some complaints that they are a bit overpriced and that the difference in performance is negligible compared to other candles.

We come to the last spark plug on our list.
Autolite goes above and beyond to create a high quality, heavy duty spark plug that will impress us. The Autolite Iridium XP spark plug comes to market with its high quality, patented design and outstanding performance. For starters, the spark plug contains a 0.6mm fine wire center electrode made from a platinum alloy with iridium to improve ignition characteristics and improve the performance of your vehicle. The spark plug also features a patented V-trim technology to prevent plug wear.
In terms of further product development, the spark plug has an original equipment (OE) equivalent design. It is designed to improve overall durability with virtually no erosion, extending spark plug life. Although the plug is designed to be as vehicle compatible as possible, you will still have to check whether the product is suitable for your vehicle. However, with a great design and even greater features, this product is worth recommending!
Signs of malfunction. Checking the spark plugs.
Everything is aimed at ensuring that the spark plug can work longer without interruption. But during operation it still wears out, and since it is non-separable, in case of problems with it it is replaced.
There are not so many signs of a non-working spark plug, or one functioning with gaps (the spark is not constant), but they are quite obvious:
- poor engine starting;
- unstable operation of the motor in some or all modes;
- increased fuel consumption;
- reduction in traction and dynamics.
Video: Replacing spark plugs
If all this is present, first of all the condition of the candles is checked. But for this it is necessary to extract them. Although it is possible to determine whether a cylinder really does not work due to the fault of the spark plug without twisting it. It’s simple - on 3 cylinders the engine will still be able to function, albeit intermittently (which is what happens with one working spark plug), but on 2 – no longer.
It is enough to start the engine, and then simply remove the tips from the spark plugs one by one. If the motor is unstable and stops altogether after removing the tip, it means that the spark plug of the disconnected cylinder is working. We start the engine again and remove the tip, but from the next spark plug. If the motor stops, repeat the procedure. And we do this until we find a non-working spark plug; when the tip is removed, the motor will continue to work, albeit intermittently.
Let's sum it up
Timely routine maintenance of the Lada Granta ignition system is the main guarantee of uninterrupted engine functionality. As you can see, replacing spark plugs is not that difficult. This measure will also reduce fuel costs.

Replacement instructions
The procedure for replacing the SZ on Lada Granta cars with 8- and 16-valve engines is generally identical. But there are a few things that are different. If you have never encountered such a task before, then there is no need to worry, since even an inexperienced motorist can perform the replacement. Of course, to do this you need to use the instructions below.
How to replace the SZ with your own hands:
First, you need to de-energize the on-board network to prevent power surges during repairs. Next, on a 16-valve power unit it is necessary to remove the decorative cover on the engine; on 8-valve internal combustion engines it is not there. Then, if you have a 16-cl. internal combustion engine, you need to press the latch and disconnect the ignition coil block. It should be noted that this step is relevant for engines with 16 valves; owners of cars with 8-valve engines skip this step. It is also necessary to take into account that in power units with 16 cells, each SZ has its own coil. After the clamps from all coils are disconnected, you need to unscrew the screws that secure them in place. To remove the bolts, use an E8 star wrench. When all the bolts are unscrewed, the coils can also be removed. Owners of cars with an 8-cl internal combustion engine again skip this step, but they need to disconnect the high-voltage wires from the short circuit. It should be noted that when dismantling high-voltage circuits, it is necessary to remember or mark which wire goes to which spark plug. If you confuse their positions, this may lead to distributor failure. Now the spent SZ must be dismantled. Depending on the engine specification, to dismantle failed spark plugs, use a 21 or 16 spark plug wrench. Remove the old plugs and install new ones in their place. If in your case each SZ is equipped with a separate coil, then install them in place and do not forget to connect them, as well as put on a decorative cover. If your car is equipped with an internal combustion engine with 8 valves, then install new valves and tighten them - first by hand, then use the key. To prevent damage to the threads, which could cause problems in the future, carefully ensure that the SZ sits exactly on the threads. Also, in order not to damage it, you do not need to tighten the SZ with great force. Next, reinstall the high-voltage wires in the order in which they were placed before.
If you have not noted their position, pay attention to the reel; the numbers must be clearly indicated on it.
Changing spark plugs for a Lada Granta with a 16-valve engine
VAZ-21126 and 21127 engines are equipped with 16 valves, but the spark plugs in them need to be changed as often as in 8-valve engines. The replacement interval is 30 thousand km. The spark plug wells will be covered by the ignition coils. Therefore, first disconnect the coil connector, unscrew it, and then you can unscrew the spark plug. During installation, it is better to use a ratchet wrench, withstanding a force of 25–30 N*m.
