But perhaps the most impressive change that has occurred since the arrival of Robert Bosch GmbH is the unprecedented growth in product exports. After all, now the only operating production of automobile spark plugs in Russia sells more than 60% of its products abroad! In 1997, when a German company acquired a controlling stake in the Automotive Glow Plug Plant, production changed almost completely, which made it possible to raise the quality of Russian components to a much higher level.

Almost all the factory buildings were rebuilt, as was all the equipment: part of the assembly line was transported from the Bosch plant in Bamberg, part was purchased from previous suppliers, and some conveyor elements were specially created for this production. Other components (sealant, glaze, central electrodes), as well as some tools, are also supplied from abroad.

Making an insulator is by no means the simplest production stage, as it might seem at first glance. Due to the duration of this stage, the production time for one candle reaches up to 5 days. The process of creating an insulator begins with carefully grinding alumina, chalk, talc and other additives in a kind of “mill” to a fine state. Then the resulting white “flour” is pressed under pressure of 500–600 atmospheres in special molds, after which the insulators are ground and take on their approximate final shape. But this is really still a kind of prototype of a candle. Try to take such a product in your hands and press lightly: the white tube breaks, as if it were really a flour product. To give strength, the workpieces are placed in a special oven, in which they will remain for more than a day at a temperature of 1600 degrees. The oven is not simple: a German installation costing 1.5 million euros allows for uniform temperature at any point in the chamber with an error of 3 degrees. Extreme care and precision are necessary here, because the insulator after baking is reduced by about 20%. It is precisely because of this that the heat treatment process is so important and requires almost pinpoint precision. After all, after cooling, coating with a special glaze and assembling with the central electrode, this insulator should ideally “mate” with the metal body of the candle.

The process of creating a case is not so long, but no less interesting. The skeins with 13 mm fittings standing near the machines are nothing more than semi-finished products of future candle bodies. One end of the reinforcement is launched into a machine, which cuts it into small blanks, and those, in turn, in just 5 strokes of a 120-ton press are transformed into an almost finished candle body. The cold stamping method, as opposed to turning, allows metal waste to be minimized. Then a side electrode is welded to the base of the body, a thread is rolled onto the body, it is nickel-plated, and after that the ceramic and metal elements of the spark plug are connected by rolling the metal “skirt”. The candle is ready - all that remains is to pack it.

But at the end of the excursion, many journalists were tormented by the same question: what is the difference between Bosch and EZ candles produced on the same machines? Indeed, the equipment and production scheme for both Bosch and EZ candles are the same. But the materials are still different. First of all, this concerns the steel of the central and side electrodes, which affects the service life. Thus, the estimated mileage on standard EZ spark plugs is about 30 thousand km, and on Bosch spark plugs - 40–50 thousand km. But now improved EZ spark plugs have appeared in the range: for example, EZ Standard with three side electrodes have improved ignition characteristics and a longer service life. There are also more advanced spark plugs: thanks to the use of yttrium alloy in the central and side electrodes, EZ Yttrium plugs have increased resistance to corrosion, which provides an increased spark plug life, and the V-shaped side electrode provides improved flame propagation and better combustion, which increases engine power and reduces fuel consumption.

It would seem such a simple detail, but what a lot of hassle! The main thing that is known for sure is that the quality of Russian components has really begun to improve. In recent years, the number of defects at the plant has decreased to almost zero: since 2009, the rate of failures among automakers (number of returns) has decreased from 67 to 0.35 per 1 million units. Moreover, the “patronage” taken in this case over Saratov production brought other fruits: external investments in the Volga region increased, more jobs appeared, and working conditions have now become more than decent.
