Any motorist knows that the correct operation of the entire vehicle depends on a large number of important factors, one of which is the transmission. You should not naively believe that this element of the system will be able to work tirelessly all its life without the participation of its owner. Just like other basic structures, the gearbox needs maintenance and replacement of consumables. If the car owner has a car such as a Lada Priora, he must periodically supply fresh oil to the box, which will improve the functionality of all internal components. If during the operation of the vehicle there is a lack of lubricant or the unit has been using used fluid for too long, the motorist may encounter a number of serious problems that will begin to “harass” the transmission. In the material below we will consider all aspects related to changing the oil in the Lada Priora gearbox.
Instructions for changing the oil in the Lada Priora gearbox.
What will happen if you don’t change it in time?
If the car owner does not change the lubricant in a timely manner, faster wear of the internal parts of the unit occurs. When an oil loses its characteristics, it becomes the reason why it cannot perform its duties.
This is fraught with the following consequences:
- The friction components of the transmission operate under high loads, which leads to their rapid wear and failure. Bearings are the first to break because these parts work under heavy load.
- When worn, metal dust flakes off the bearings, which can clog the lubrication system lines. Because of this, the pressure in it increases greatly, which leads to the squeezing out of oil seals and seals. This ultimately causes a leak.
- As a result of wear of the bearings, sounds uncharacteristic of the operation of the unit will appear. The driver may also feel vibrations from the gear lever.
- Due to problems associated with the operation of the unit, difficulties arise when changing gears. Sometimes the gearshift lever is knocked out of its set position. When changing gears, there may be a crunching noise and extraneous noise.
If internal parts wear out, changing the oil in the Priora gearbox will not solve the problem at the root. Damaged transmission components must be replaced.

When to change the oil?
The period for changing the oil in the Priora gearbox is clearly regulated by the manufacturer. According to the data provided by the developer, both synthetic and semi-synthetic substances are subject to partial or complete replacement after the car has covered 75 thousand km. The same source advises checking the condition of the transmission lubrication and, if necessary, replacing it only after 5 years; however, it is worth taking into account other parameters, not only the service life. Since the majority of domestic cars are operated in harsh conditions, changing the lubricant after 50 thousand km will be a guarantee of safety for the transmission.
It is worth noting that it is not always possible to rely on mileage or regulated replacement every 5 years. The vehicle will need new lubricant a little earlier if various deposits have accumulated in the substance used (loss of properties), a burning smell is felt in the car (intensifies when inspecting the control hole of the gearbox), difficulties are encountered with switching the lever, the unit is noisier, vibrations are noted in the lever area .
How to replace it yourself?
You can change the oil in the gearbox of a VAZ Priora 16 valve model of 2015 and other years of production with your own hands.
Tools and materials
The procedure for changing the substance occurs using:
- wrench 17;
- fresh lubricant;
- a syringe with a connected transparent tube;
- containers into which you will drain the “working off”;
- clean rags.
You can learn about changing the lubricant yourself and all the nuances that the car owner will encounter during the task from the video shot by user ValeRiaN.
Stages of work
How to drain and fill fresh oil in a Priora gearbox:
The car is driven into a garage with a pit, onto a lift or onto an overpass
This is important because you will have to gain access to the underside of the car. Depending on the fasteners, use a screwdriver or wrench to unscrew the engine mudguard fastenings. Set the splash guard aside. Locate the drain hole on your car's transmission
Place a container under it. Unscrew the plug of the control or filler hole, if there is one, or remove the dipstick from the neck, this will reduce the pressure in the lubrication system when draining the “working off”. If access to the dipstick is difficult, remove the air filter housing and move it to the side. Using a wrench, unscrew the drain cover. Be careful when unscrewing. At first, the oil will come out of the system in a thin stream, but after the plug is completely unscrewed, it will begin to flow under great pressure. Use gloves. It is advisable that when draining the fluid the engine is not cold, due to this the substance will be more viscous and will drain out of the transmission faster. While the oil is draining, visually assess the condition of the drain plug. If it is too dirty, clean it of debris and wear and tear. Check the condition of the seal; if it is badly worn, it is recommended to replace the part. Otherwise, you may encounter a problem with lubricant leakage. When the liquid has drained, assess its condition. If the gearbox is functioning properly, it should be free of metal dust and other impurities. The presence of deposits indicates contamination of the unit, so it is recommended to wash it. To clean the transmission, the filler hole must be closed and flushing is performed using a special product. There is a large selection of such liquids; the product is purchased at a car store. To flush, pour about 1.3 liters of cleaner into the gearbox housing. Then the front part of the car must be hung, for this the wheels are placed on a jack. Start the engine and engage first gear, press the gas. Due to the fact that the front of the car is raised, you can drive in first gear for several minutes. After this, the procedure for draining the waste fluid from the system is repeated. If the flushing oil is too dirty after cleaning the unit, the procedure must be repeated. After this, wipe the drain and fill plug again. Remove the dipstick from the inspection neck to check the level. Now you can fill it, it is done through the control hole. You must pour fresh oil into the transmission using a syringe with a connected pipe, otherwise you will not be able to refuel the unit. One end of the hose is inserted into the control hole, on the other side the liquid is supplied into the system using a syringe. About 3.1 liters of oil is poured into the gearbox, the volume of the substance is controlled by the dipstick. When the filling procedure is completed, install the meter in place. Reinstall all previously removed components in reverse order. When the process is complete, take a test drive of the machine and check the lubricant level again.
Replacing the pistons on the Priora with plugless ones. Let's do it right
- “Do the valves bend on the Priora 1.6 16 valves”;
- “Which VAZ engines do not bend the valves?”
- Before all work begins, the engine is thoroughly cleaned of all accumulated deposits;
- The motor support bracket on the right is removed. To do this, use the “13” key to tighten its bolts;
- Take the key “15”; They are used to unscrew the fastenings of the generator holder with the front support. This bracket is also removable;
- The following are disconnected: the pipeline, followed by the cylinder head, then the flywheel and, finally, the oil filter;
- The pipe supplying the pump to the cylinder block is dismantled;
- The crankcase pan is removed along with the oil pump and the oil receiver attached to it;
- Use a “ten” to unscrew the bolts on the crankshaft rear oil seal holder. It can be easily removed - you just need to pry it under the lugs on the body with a screwdriver;
- Unscrew all the screws on the connecting rod covers;
- The connecting rods along with the pistons are pulled out;
- Next, the rings are removed from the pistons. If they are deformed or damaged, they should be replaced during reassembly;
- The piston pin is pushed out by a mandrel by 16-18 mm. Now you can remove the piston from the connecting rod.

What kind of oil can be poured into the gearbox and what volume is required?
How much oil does it take to fill the Priora crankcase? The answer is from 3 to 3.3 liters. The lubricant level should correspond to the upper mark (maximum) on the dipstick. Do not pour fluid above the mark; subsequently, it may leak out of the gearbox. The lower (minimum) mark similarly means the minimum level. If the level drops below this mark, the gearbox will quickly require repair.
What oil is better to fill in the Priora gearbox? To do this, you need to choose a lubricant with good viscosity, this is of great importance especially in winter. The ideal is 75w-90. Below is an example of why this is so:
- 75w hardens at minus 45 and thickens at minus 30;
- 80w hardens at minus 30 and thickens at minus 15;
- 85w hardens at minus 15 and thickens at minus 10.
If you don’t want unnecessary problems, you don’t have time to warm up the car for a long time, you want to avoid adverse consequences with the engine and clutch, you need to choose a car fluid with good viscosity.
What oil composition is best to pour into the gearbox of a Priora car?
If it is not possible to pour one of the recommended ones, or these manufacturers are simply not suitable, you can choose a working fluid for the Priora gearbox from another manufacturer. The main requirement is that the viscosity should be 75W-80 or 75W-90, and the composition should be synthetic or semi-synthetic. It is better to fill in oil from the same manufacturer, but for different seasons. In the Priora box for winter, it is better to pour 75W-80,85,90. According to reference data, the viscosity provides protection against increased friction in the range from +35 to -40. 75W-90 - will withstand +45 degrees. For the Southern region, 85w-90 is good; it works at temperatures above 45 degrees.
Changing the gearbox oil
Do-it-yourself priors will require preliminary preparation from the motorist. First of all, having purchased everything you need, you should park the car in a garage equipped with a pit, on a lift or overpass. After access to the bottom of the vehicle is gained, using a screwdriver or wrench it is worth dismantling the fastening of the power unit mudguard.
After removing the cover from the transmission drain hole, the motorist should place an empty 5-liter tank under it, which will help contain all the waste that comes out. Removing the control hole plug will help optimize the process. By pulling out the dipstick, the car owner will reduce the pressure in the structure. Sometimes at this stage it is necessary to dismantle the air filter housing.
If a motorist has decided when to change the oil in the box, he must first familiarize himself with all the theoretical information. In particular, prepare the tools, because without a “17” wrench it will be impossible to unscrew the cap covering the drain hole. It will take 10 - 15 minutes for the glass to lubricate the transmission, during which time it is advisable to clean the plug
It is important to remove absolutely all wear products from it. At the same stage, you should check and, if necessary, change the seal to eliminate the possibility of leakage
After completely draining the lubricant, you need to check its condition; a normally functioning substance should be indicated by a light color, a burning smell, and the absence of impurities and debris. If there are any complications, the structure needs to be cleaned. With the filler hole closed, a special product is poured into the unit. There are many cleaners on the market today; you can choose any according to your capabilities. For cleaning you will need about 1.5 liters. substances. As soon as the liquid enters the unit, the front of the vehicle should be positioned so that the wheels are raised, this can be done using a jack. When the power unit is activated, the first gear is turned on, and you need to drive with a gentle pressure on the gas pedal for a couple of minutes. The next step is to drain the substance again. If the contamination is severe, the procedure is repeated.
After the dipstick leaves the control neck, you can begin to supply fresh lubricant into it. The peculiarity of the Lada Priora is that it will be possible to fill in new lubricant only using a syringe with a transparent pipe. In this case, one part of the hose should be in the control hole when the second is replenished with a syringe. It can take quite a long time to fill the 3.1 liter tank. oils In any case, the volume of liquid supplied must be regulated by the dipstick.
We recommend: Removing the driver's door trim
Once everything is done, the meter should take its place. Previously dismantled parts of the system have been reinstalled. Correct operation should be checked by a test drive and the opportunity to make sure that the level of the new fluid is in the required range.
How much oil should be in the transmission?
The volume of oil in the Priora gearbox, which is necessary for topping up, is 3 - 3.3 liters. Checking the level and adding lubricant can be done by the car owner himself. To find out about the amount of oil, you need to place the vehicle horizontally and take the dipstick (as a rule, it should be located at the rear of the unit, in the upper part of the gearbox housing). The car owner will be able to start working with the meter after he independently removes the housing of the air cleaning device and the air duct.
To determine how much oil is in the Priora box, you should remove the dipstick from the control hole, clean it of grease and lower it back into the device to the highest possible level. Once the meter is outside, you can find out its volume. If everything is in order, the lubricant will reach the MAX mark. Sometimes, to check the oil level in the Priora gearbox, a dipstick is not required. You can find out the volume of liquid through the filler hole. The substance of interest to the motorist should be located in the area of the lower edge. If it is not enough, it must be topped up.
Selecting oil for the Priora gearbox
Since the Russian Federation is a state with fairly cold winters in most of the country, lubricant for Priora gearboxes should be selected with high viscosity. As for the composition, both the factory and car owners recommend synthetic or semi-synthetic fluids.
They can be grouped into the following table:
Marking | Extremely low temperature | Extremely high temperature |
75W-80 | -40 | +35 |
75W-85 | -40 | +35 |
75W-90 | -40 | +45 |
80W-85 | -26 | +35 |
80W-90 | -26 | +45 |
85W-90 | -12 | +45 |
Thus, the optimal choice is a lubricant marked 75W-90. Regarding the manufacturer of the fluid, the plant fills it with Lukoil TM 4. In turn, car owners, in addition to it, also use lubricants from the manufacturers Castrol, Liqui Moly, Mobil, Shell, ZIC.
Mineral oils are not popular. This is facilitated by their low viscosity, rapid aging and loss of quality, and uneven wear of the transmission during operation.
To save money, it is better to choose semi-synthetics. And in order not to buy a fake, you need to order lubricant from an official dealer, in a trusted store or online. The cost of replacing transmission lubricant for Lada Priora averages 3,000 rubles.
General information about gear oil
The manufacturer fills Priora with Lukoil TM 412 transmission oil from the factory. However, such a liquid is not suitable for further use as a base substance, so it is only poured for the period of running in the car. If you act in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, this lubricant should subsequently be replaced with another substance, taking into account the parameters specified in the vehicle’s operating manual. For the Lada Priora transmission, it is preferable to choose synthetic or semi-synthetic fluid with a viscosity class of 75W-90.
All factory recommendations should be taken into account; the oil in the Priora gearbox should depend on the region of operation. It is extremely important to take a responsible approach to the choice of lubricant that the car will consume in the cold winter. If you buy a product labeled 75W, you should be prepared for the fact that the oil will begin to crystallize as soon as the thermometer drops below -45° C. As for the 80W substance, it will show worse performance already at -15° C. The lubricant will thicken even earlier 85W (-10°C).
Experienced motorists advise purchasing Castrol 75W-90 Syntrax Universal lubricant (some car owners praise Zik Top 75W). The guarantee of the right choice will be the purchase of original high-quality oil.
View from the outside
A convenient and comfortable Priora car is one of the budget representatives of the sedan class. Manual transmission two-shaft, 5-speed. The box is assembled from three parts (sealant is placed between them): clutch housing, gearbox housing, rear cover.
A magnet located in the clutch housing socket holds metal debris and shavings. The drive gears of the input shaft are meshed with the forward gears. Oil is supplied to the driven gears through the hollow secondary shaft. It houses the forward gear synchronizers.
This unit is well assembled. And the synchronizers on the main switches are proof of this. Their operation is clearly adjusted, which reduces wear on the mechanical connection and noise when shifting gears. Accordingly, more durable operation of the Priora gearbox is ensured. But while monitoring the oil level, we should not forget that the quality of Russian roads leaves much to be desired. And this is one of the reasons for more frequent lubricant changes.
Leaks on the gearbox housing are also a motivating signal to action.
In order to check the transmission oil level, you must first place the car on a flat surface. Wait until the engine cools down completely. Remove the dipstick from the hole in the top of the box. Wipe it with a clean dry cloth and put it back
Then take out the dipstick again and pay attention to the marks located on it. The level should reach the maximum value
Visually assess the quality of the work. The main thing is not to miss the time when you need to pour new oil into the box.
Checking the lubricant level in the Lada Priora gearbox with a dipstick
The oil itself has two components: a base and an additive package. If the chemical composition of the base (base) is responsible for the property of the material, then additives correct the performance characteristics. This includes maintaining a certain temperature. The working fluid must not foam!
Playing the role of a lubricant, the oil also serves as a “broom”, cleaning the gearbox from technical debris.
Transmission oil change intervals
A lack of working fluid leads to breakdown of the Lada Priora manual transmission and expensive repairs. If you notice extraneous noise in the operation of the gearbox or experience difficulty shifting gears, it is better to immediately check the amount of oil.
And for preventive purposes, it is recommended to monitor the volume of fluid in the transmission every 10 thousand kilometers.
Choice
As a rule, the Priora is filled with Lukoil TM 412
recommended by the manufacturer itself. Note that the lubricant on new cars is “break-in”, which eliminates the need for an early replacement. But it is mandatory to do this at the first technical inspection. So, what choice should the Priora owner make, in favor of which oil?
Motul, Castrol, Mannol lubricant
Even a used Priora's gearbox will stop making noise, and the gears will fly almost by themselves. Motul costs approximately 1,000 rubles. for a jar, which is quite enough. All this, of course, is true
But under one very important condition. The fact is that the TJ in the Priora box must have certain viscosity limits: 75-80W
As for the API group, the oil must be GL-4.
What oil should I use?
From the factory, LUKOIL TM-4-12 mineral oil was poured as transmission fluid. It could only be used during the break-in of a new car. Therefore, according to the recommendations of AvtoVAZ, after some time it had to be changed to a fresher liquid with certain performance properties.
The manufacturer specifies that the new oil must be synthetic or semi-synthetic and meet viscosity grade SAE 75W-90. This is an all-season liquid that works at ambient temperatures from -40 °C to +35 °C. 75W-80 and 80W-85 oils are also suitable. 80W-90 liquids can be used in regions where winter temperatures do not drop below -10...-12 °C.
In addition to viscosity, the oil must comply with API GL-4 class. This includes transmission fluids that are designed to operate in medium-loaded gears: hypoid, bevel and spiral-bevel, operating at oil temperatures up to +150 °C and contact pressure up to 3000 MPa.
Let's consider which oils are most popular in the LADA Priora gearbox.
LUKOIL TM-4 (GL-4) 75W-90
This is a semi-synthetic transmission fluid used in manual transmissions, differentials and transfer cases of cars and trucks. It is made from highly purified mineral base oil, synthetic components and a multifunctional additive package.
The oil has high anti-corrosion, anti-foam, anti-wear and viscosity-temperature properties. It reliably protects transmission elements under high loads, ensures smooth operation of the gearbox at low temperatures and has high oxidative and thermal stability.
SHELL SPIRAX S4 G 75W-90
Semi-synthetic gear oil API GL-4 for manual gearboxes of cars and small trucks. Used in VAG cars as a first fill fluid.
The oil does not destroy synchronizers, ensures smooth operation of the gearbox, and protects transmission elements from shock loads, corrosion and wear. It has an extended service life and improves the performance of the gearbox.
Castrol Syntrax Universal 75W-90
Synthetic multi-purpose gear oil for gearboxes and manual transmissions. Suitable for use in synchronized manual transmissions of cars and trucks, as well as final drives and differentials of trucks and construction equipment.
The fluid has excellent fluidity at low temperatures and effectively protects against wear under high loads. It has an extended service life and is compatible with conventional mineral oils and sealing materials.
ZIC GF TOP 75W-90
Synthetic transmission oil for manual transmissions and drive axles. Compatible with synchronized boxes. In Hyuindai and Kia cars it is used as a first fill fluid. Belongs to material class GL-4/5. Meets the requirements of 75W-85 GL-4 oils.
The fluid ensures reliable lubrication of all transmission elements at high speeds and heavy loads, cleans the gearbox and axles, increases the service replacement interval, reduces wear, protects against corrosion and has excellent thermal-oxidative characteristics.
LIQUI MOLY Hochleistungs-Getriebeoil GL4+ (GL 4/GL 5) 75W-90
Synthetic transmission oil for manual transmissions and drive axles. It is compatible with synchronizers and is resistant to aging. Thanks to a special additive package, the fluid reliably protects transmission elements.
The oil prevents wear and corrosion, works well under high loads and maintains its characteristics at high temperatures. Can be used in gearboxes that require GL-4 oils and manual transmissions that are combined with a hypoid transmission.
Oil quality
{banner_content}It is so important that we devoted an entire paragraph to this topic. In all components and mechanisms of manual transmissions, friction pairs are formed during operation
The main gear is considered to be the most heavily loaded pair, although other elements are also subject to their influence. High-quality oil with the correct kinetic and dynamic viscosity facilitates the flow of lubricant into friction pairs, thereby reducing the negative effect and increasing the resistance to rotation and pressure of the vapor masses in the crankcase. If the oil is of poor quality or the wrong viscosity, it will not be able to cope with such a task. The crunch and noise in the gearbox is clear evidence of this.
Replacement
The replacement procedure itself should take place after the car has been driven for a long time so that the oil is not very thick. And the box itself warms up well during this time.
The operation should be carried out like this:
- Remove the Priora engine protection;
- Clean the crankcase drain hole from dirt;
- Unscrew the plug, placing some container in advance;
- Wait until the lubricant is completely drained and screw the plug back on;
- Fill in the required amount of fuel fluid (the amount that is drained is the same amount that is added). The level is checked with a special probe.
Useful conclusions
- If you fill a Priora with a fuel oil that does not match the viscosity parameters presented, problems will arise;
- Typically, if the car is new, the owner wants to maintain the warranty for maintenance and oil changes. The advice in this case is this: do not fill in any oil other than mineral or semi-synthetic;
- If the owner cannot find high-quality vehicles on his own, it is recommended to contact dealers;
- Customer reviews are an important factor influencing the independent choice of oil;
- Do not use additives or other “high performance” lubricants.
If there are chips in the oil
It also happens that the waste liquid contains shiny metal dust or other impurities. This indicates that the oil in the box has not been changed for a long time. There is no point in uploading a new one right away. After all, some of the deposits remain in the transmission. What to do in this case? It is necessary to wash the box. To clean the gearbox, specialized flushing oil is used. It needs to be poured into a box in a volume of one and a half to two liters.
Next, you should hang the front part of the car above the ground (install the Priora on a jack), start the engine and engage first gear. Since there is an independent differential, it is enough to lift one wheel. This way the oil will pass through all gearbox components and wash away negative deposits. After 2-3 minutes, this liquid can be drained. It will take on a dark shade (sometimes with particles of metal shavings). After this, you can begin to fill the new oil in full.
How to change the oil in a manual transmission of a Lada Priora
Before changing the oil in the gearbox on a Priora car, you need to prepare first. First, you need to prepare:
- a basin with a volume of more than 5 liters, an old rag (to collect all the waste liquid and prevent it from spilling on the floor);
- key "10";
- a special syringe (as an analogue - connect a small hose and a funnel (just make the connection airtight), pour through the hose);
- clean cloth.
Secondly, you need to drive for about 15 minutes to warm up the gearbox.
After this, you can proceed with the replacement according to the following instructions:
- After the trip, park the car on a ditch, or use a car lift. Some people manage to carry out all the work by jacking up the front end and then placing supports under it.
- Remove the engine splash guard.
- Place a basin or other container under the gearbox, and place an old rag under it - it will collect small drops that will splash out beyond the boundaries of the container.
- Unscrew the drain plug with a wrench; at the end turns, try to quickly remove your hand so as not to get dirty. Wipe the cork with a clean cloth, you can rinse it and leave it to dry.
- Inspect the fluid that was drained. Before replacing it, check the cleanliness of the gearbox housing. If the waste fluid is dirty (lots of metal shavings, impurities), take the flushing fluid, tighten the drain plug, and fill in about 1.2-1.4 liters. After this, start the engine and engage first gear. Leave the machine for 2-3 minutes, then repeat the procedure with draining.
- Clean the threads of the drain hole. Place the plug and tighten it.
- Remove the dipstick from the gearbox.
- Pour the recommended amount of replacement fluid inside – about 3.2 liters. At the same time, monitor the liquid level relative to the Max and Min marks. Try not to overfill.
- Replace the dipstick.
- Install the engine splash guard.
- Lower the car, start the engine. Try driving a couple of kilometers to evaluate the changes. If the gears are difficult to shift, try adding a little more, but do not exceed the maximum mark - most often up to 4 liters is enough.
Please tell us what brands of fluid you use and what viscosity!
What boxes are on the Lada Priora?
The production of Lada Priora began in 2007. During production, the car was modernized, and the gearboxes were changed.
2170
The first model in this family was the VAZ-2170. They produced several engine options, but there was only one transmission. A 5-speed manual transmission was installed. The box from the VAZ-2110 was taken as a basis.
Many VAZ-2170 owners complained about the rapid wear of the oil seals. Already with a short mileage we noticed transmission fluid leaking.
How to check the oil in a Lada Priora box
Uncertainty in gear shifting, extraneous howling, quick breakdown of synchronizers - these are the reviews about the first Priora and its transmission.
Now this box can be bought for 20 thousand rubles.
2180
In 2013, the updated Priora was released. Reinforced shafts were installed in the modified transmission. This gearbox was installed on cars with a 16-valve engine. Now she could transmit more torque to the engine flywheel.
The first samples of such a gearbox received a lot of negative reviews. Car owners noted manufacturing defects, the appearance of a “howl” when braking, and complained that the gears refused to engage.
A new transmission for this Lada model can cost 40 thousand rubles, but can be found cheaper at disassembly sites - for 20 thousand rubles.
2181
The VAZ-2181 transmission was installed only on Prioras with 8-valve engines. The unit from the VAZ-2180 was taken as a basis, in which the rigid drive was replaced with a cable drive. The production of this gearbox began in 2012.
AvtoVAZ engineers used multi-cone synchronizers for first and second gears. This significantly increased the comfort of movement in traffic jams. But the innovations did not live up to expectations: synchronizers soon fail, and a crunch appears when changing gears.
Box "Lada Priora"
Drivers often complained about the speed not being engaged. This was especially true for 2nd gear.
Due to the defect, there were many recall campaigns when the box was replaced under warranty.
The factory price for such a transmission is 32 thousand rubles. Owners who are faced with replacing a unit do not recommend buying a gearbox from a disassembly site: the likelihood of finding a truly working unit is low.
2182
In order to keep up with the market, the LADA concern introduced robotic gearboxes in 2014. Priora is no exception: it is also equipped with AMT. The ancestor of the VAZ “robot” was the manual gearbox 2180.
The lack of experience among domestic engineers led to the need for cooperation with ZF. It was based on German developments that the Lada box received clutch actuators.
The gearbox allows you to change gears manually to gain maximum control over the car. But even here, car owners found disadvantages of the transmission. Basic:
- oil leakage from seals;
- frequent overheating.
Checking the oil in Lada Priora
If problems arise with this box, the prices for spare parts may unpleasantly surprise you. A new German shift actuator costs 56 thousand rubles, a clutch actuator costs about 40 thousand rubles.
How to change the oil in a Lada Priora gearbox
- 75w hardens at minus 45 and thickens at minus 30;
- 80w hardens at minus 30 and thickens at minus 15;
- 85w hardens at minus 15 and thickens at minus 10.
If you don’t want unnecessary problems, you don’t have time to warm up the car for a long time, you want to avoid adverse consequences with the engine and clutch, you need to choose a car fluid with good viscosity.
Instructions for self-replacement
In the first 15 minutes after the trip, it is advisable to drain the lubricant, otherwise it will quickly cool down and drain worse. Now let’s write down what you need to take to successfully change the oil in the gearbox on a Priora.
Instructions
- Place the car on a lift or viewing platform.
- Remove and set aside the engine splash guard.
- Place a drain container under the gearbox.
- Unscrew the drain plug.
Drain the old liquid into a container (do this carefully so as not to splash yourself with liquid). Now you need to clean the removed plug from dirt, remove all metal particles and screw it back. If the gearbox is very dirty, it must be washed thoroughly to get rid of mechanical impurities. To begin, quickly start pouring 1.3 liters of flushing fluid into the crankcase, close the oil filler hole
Then, weigh the front wheels, turn on the car in first gear and let it run in this state for 2-3 minutes, get rid of the flushing fluid. After everything, wipe the oil drain hole with a clean rag and replace the plug. Before replacement is completed, remove the level indicator. Now, when the lubricant is replaced for the Priora, it is necessary to pour the prepared lubricant with a special syringe. Remember that you need to fill the crankcase up to about (approximately 3.1 liters). After we have done everything, we need to insert the pointer all the way into the crankcase hole.
To completely complete our work, it is still not enough to install the engine mudguards in place. Once this procedure is completed, the replacement is complete.

Replacement frequency and lubricant selection
The manufacturer has determined that oil changes in the Priora gearbox are required at intervals of 75 thousand km. This is a fairly large gap, designed for the fact that synthetic-based oil will be poured into the box. The conditions in which the vehicle is operated often dictate a reduction in this interval. For example, the car constantly “walks under a trailer” or with increased loads on the transmission.
Then it is better to remove the oil level dipstick as often as possible and monitor not only the lubricant level, but also the technical condition: contamination and fluidity, especially if the service mileage is more than 50 thousand km. Another reason for early replacement of the lubricant in the box can be buying a car second-hand without marks in the service book. The answer to the question of what kind of oil to pour into the Priora transmission should be sought first of all in the car’s operating instructions.
Traditionally, AvtoVAZ recommends products for use. Lubricant produced by the same company is poured into the gearbox of new VAZ cars; it acts as a break-in and flushing lubricant until the first maintenance; after replacing it, you can select a product from another company. Here are brief recommendations on how to choose the right gear oil for the VAZ 2170.
- The viscosity grade must correspond to that specified in the operating instructions.
- It is not recommended to use mineral based oil. The service mileage determined by the manufacturer is accepted for synthetic or semi-synthetic oils. When pouring mineral water, you will not be able to correctly determine the service interval, because the mineral base deteriorates faster than the synthetic one.
- It is preferable to purchase liquid lubricants from official dealers located in your city. This may also be useful in an unusual situation, when you need to add oil to the gearbox due to a leak. A sales representative will help you choose the right brand of oil for topping up.
- You should not add various additives and additives to your gear oil. As a rule, all the necessary additives are already present in the lubricant; nothing else is needed.
- Before purchasing, you should read reviews about this product. This can be done on the Internet, filtering out rave reviews from agents selling lubricants.

How to buy original oil
Surely many have encountered suspiciously high discounts on any products from well-known brands that are associated with almost nothing. As a rule, such discounts operate almost constantly and this is due to the fact that the oil is not original. This can be easily checked at the purchase stage.
When purchasing a product at a surprisingly low price, be sure to look at the GOST and certificate. If you are not completely sure, then simply enter the numbers printed on the packaging into a search engine. There you will find detailed information about the product. For any well-known and trusted brand, searching for information will not take more than a minute.
If you ignore this basic thing, then there is a risk of purchasing low-quality oil, which not only will not help correct problems with the transmission and gearbox, but will also worsen the existing situation. You should especially not miss this rule when contacting a previously unknown auto shop.
Replacement instructions
It is better to immediately clean the drain plug from dirt, which in some cases does not even allow you to put an open-end wrench on the plug nut. We put on rubber gloves and goggles, loosen the plug with a key and then rotate it by hand. In this case, we support the container under the drain hole. On the last turns of the thread, you must be prepared to sharply move your hand with the plug to the side and quickly adjust the position of the container under a stream of oil.
Check the lubricant level with a dipstick
If you accidentally drop the plug into the container, remove it after the oil has cooled. When the stream weakens, we place the waste container on the floor or a board laid across the pit. We wait until all the oil drains out, this is approximately 15-20 minutes. After all the lubricant has flowed out of the manual transmission housing, wipe with a rag all the parts that got oil. This will prevent dirt from accumulating around the hole.
We screw the drain plug into place and press it with a wrench with a little force so as not to damage the thread. We install the pan protection in place, and this completes the work under the car. We open the hood of the Priora and find the filler neck of the gearbox with a lubricant level dipstick inserted into it. We take out the dipstick, wipe it with a rag and put it aside. Insert a tube with a funnel into the neck hole and begin pouring new oil.
It should be noted that some oil manufacturers make special canisters with such a tube, in which case a funnel is not needed. The filling process is quite long due to the high viscosity of the lubricant. This should be done in portions, periodically checking the level with a dipstick. You can speed up and make the process easier if you place a canister of new lubricant on a heating radiator or other heated surface a couple of hours before starting work. The oil will become more fluid and will fill the crankcase faster.
The amount of gear lubricant for the Priora gearbox is 3.5 liters according to the manufacturer. Fill until the level on the dipstick is between the max and min marks. We give 10 minutes of time for all the oil to drain into the oil pan, after which we bring the level to the max mark with small additions, if necessary. We take out the tube with the funnel, wipe the area around the neck with a rag and put the dipstick in place. The operation is completed.
Every car enthusiast who owns a Lada Priora car can independently change the lubricant in the gearbox of their car. It may take more time than specialists at a service station, but it will allow you to save money and gain confidence in the quality of the work performed.
Changing the oil in the gearbox (gearbox) on a Priora
Welcome! The gearbox cannot work without oil, and the engine cannot work without it, oil is an integral part of most mechanisms in which there is constant friction, due to oil this friction is significantly reduced and the parts no longer wear out as much as they would without lubricants, in addition to this oil, have various additives, they do not allow metal parts to freeze, and therefore, in severe frosts, a good synthetic oil will allow the engine to start much faster than a cheap mineral water will be poured into the car (with mineral oil, you will generally suffer from starting the engine in cold weather, yes and this is unlikely to happen at all), if the oil is not changed for a long time, then all the additives that it has are lost and it becomes simply useless, so periodically you still need to look into the gearbox and always into the engine, because if there is a lack of lubrication or if it is damaged, mechanisms wear out much faster than when new high-quality oil is poured into these mechanisms.
Note! To change the oil in the box, you will need to: Make a special tool with which the oil will be poured into the box (It consists of a funnel, or if you feel sorry for it, you can use an ordinary cut bottle from a long but thin hose, see the photo below for more details, this tool is exactly shown on it), in addition to it, you will need a wrench (preferably a spanner, “17” approximately) and a large container into which the old oil will be drained and don’t forget about a rag, you will need it!
Where is the oil in the gearbox? In fact, it is already clear that the oil is located in the gearbox, but very few people know where the gearbox itself is located in front-wheel drive cars, let's start with the words, the gearbox itself is bolted and it is attached to the car engine, in order to see the engine you will have to open the hood, so after opening, you will need to look at the very bottom of the engine and look for the box (the dipstick sticks out of it to check the oil level) for clarity, we posted a photo below, in which an arrow indicated where the dipstick is inserted (It is removed) and by the way, you will also fill in new oil there when you remove the old one from the box.
When should you change the gearbox oil? If you adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations, then it is recommended to change the engine oil once every 15 thousand km (It is strictly forbidden, this is a lot, once every 7 thousand, it is necessary or once every 5 thousand, if funds allow and the engine will live for quite a long time life), and transmission once every 75 thousand km, or after 5 years after filling, we do not recommend that you listen to this, because there are different oils and some oil will last for about 5 years, and some after 3 years spoil (By the way, when buying gear oil on boxes, also read the expiration date, it is usually indicated there), well, we recommend changing the oil in the box every 50 thousand
km., or once every 3 years, but when you drain it, pay attention to whether there are metal shavings in it (This flies from the gears, if there is none, then everything is fine), if there is, then change your driving style (handle the gearbox more carefully) or in the future the gears are completely demolished and you will have to repair the box or even buy a new one and don’t forget about timely changing the oil in the box, it also affects its performance
Note! If chips are found in the old oil, the gearbox must be flushed with a special one. with oil, this is done in the same way as changing the oil, that is, the old one is drained, the drain plug is screwed in, flushing oil is poured into the box and at one point, when the flushing is filled, you need to jack up one of the front wheels of the car (the other one should stand firmly on the ground at this time it should) or if you are afraid, then you can hang both at once and after that you will need to start the car and put in first gear and let the car run for about 2-3 minutes, when the time is up, turn off the engine, drain the flush and fill in new oil and by the way , if you are going to hang out only one wheel, take into account the fact that if the car has already been in the hands of other people, then it may have a differential lock installed, due to which, instead of turning one wheel, it will break off with both and go in front if You’ve had the car all your life and bought it at a dealership, then this won’t happen and you can safely hang up one wheel and put it in gear!
Functions of oil in a manual transmission in a car
Lubricant in a manual transmission (MT) essentially has one function - reducing excess friction that occurs during the interaction of moving parts (for reference, a manual transmission is, in fact, a set of various gears and shafts). This is necessary to reduce wear on parts and improve the performance of the gearbox. With increased friction, the speed of the car decreases, changing gears is difficult, fuel consumption increases and problems with the engine begin. Therefore, the functions of the oil in a manual transmission on a Lada Priora are always the same - reducing this very friction to an acceptable level.
A car driver should know what the consequences of using a lubricant that has exhausted its service life are:
- There are problems with switching speeds. The shift lever moves with some difficulty, and a knocking sound is heard from the gearbox when changing gears.
- The speed limit changes. With increased fuel consumption, the vehicle speed decreases and the engine makes more noise.
- The movement of the car is uneven; when the speed decreases, jerks begin, as if you press the brake pedal.
The described signs mean, among other things, that it is time to change the oil. But it is also recommended to check the condition of the fluid itself - in certain situations, the listed problems are caused by breakdowns of other components in the car. The oil itself changes in the following way: it becomes thicker, darkens, and inclusions of soot and metal shavings appear in it.
