There is absolutely nothing pleasant about breaking tie rod ends. Therefore, if such a malfunction is detected, it is necessary to take immediate action to eliminate it.

Appearance of elements

It is important to note that the tie rod ends of the VAZ 2109 are in many ways similar to the designs of other representatives of the AvtoVAZ model range. But if we compare, for example, with the VAZ 2110, where the tip is screwed onto the rod, then the VAZ 2109 has the opposite - the tip is screwed into the rod, that is, it has an internal thread.

Replacing steering tips on VAZ 2109 and 21099. This is inevitable

Such work as replacing steering tips on VAZ 2109 and 21099 is not uncommon. This is due to the low quality of parts, as well as not very good roads. At the same time, operating a car with such a malfunction can lead to various unpleasant consequences. And also to more expensive repairs. It is important to correct the malfunction in a timely manner; it is not difficult. But it will save you from unnecessary expenses. This work itself does not require any special costs. Please note that you will need to use a special tool. In principle, you can do without it. Then repairs will not be more expensive than purchasing replacement parts. Frequent driving on uneven roads leads to this problem. Cars of inexperienced drivers who do not always behave correctly on roads with poor-quality surfaces suffer especially.

Causes

There are three main reasons that lead to the need for such an event as replacing tie rod ends.

Cause

Peculiarities

Time spares no one, therefore, as the operating life, diluted by far from ideal road conditions, ends, the tip wears out. It rotates constantly, and wear and tear on rotating, moving elements is completely natural. Therefore, when you know that the service life of your old tips is coming to an end, we recommend that you monitor them more closely. They can refuse at any time

Just like in the case of a ball joint, the tie rod ends of domestic nines are enclosed in a protective boot. During operation, this protective casing often breaks, which sometimes leads to quite sad consequences. For example, if dirt, dust, or debris gets inside the boot, this will cause even faster wear of the parts. Therefore, the tips will definitely not last their entire lifespan.

Insufficient amount of lubricant

What does friction lead to when there is no lubrication? That's right, no good. Therefore, if the tips had a small amount of lubricant, very soon it will be used up and will no longer be able to perform its functions. As a result, the steering system elements wear out and require urgent replacement.

Whatever one may say, under any circumstances, replacing tie rod end switches is a matter of time. To extend this time between replacements, purchase only quality products.

Diagnostics

Replacement of steering tips on VAZ 2109 and 21099 is required if there are obvious signs of malfunction. You should consider replacing tips in the following cases:

  • Knocks in the suspension when driving over uneven surfaces and when turning;
  • Control problems. The car can wander along the road. But this is not a mandatory indicator. The same symptom may occur with other suspension problems;
  • Uneven wear of rubber.

To clarify the diagnosis, you will have to drive the car into an inspection hole and inspect the suspension. A sign of a problem is damaged anthers. If they have cracks or are deformed, then it makes sense to change the tips. Check them for play. To do this, try moving them with a pry bar. This will not work on working tips. If there is play, then it is better to replace the part immediately. Even in the absence of other signs.

Consequences of a malfunction

The steering end screws onto the long steering rack arm. This achieves a movable connection between the rack and the steering knuckle, but at the same time it is quite rigid. Long trips with a faulty tip will lead to serious problems with steering and more. Tires are most often affected.

During long trips with faulty joints, wheel alignment is disrupted. This causes increased wear of the rubber. But this is far from the only consequence of problems with the tip. In fact, this hinge should protect the steering rack from impacts and shocks. If there is a malfunction, this function is lost; if you continue to drive further, the risk of damaging the rack becomes quite large.

The work process itself is not complicated. In addition to the basic tools, you will need a special ball puller. Without it, removing the finger from the steering knuckle will be problematic. In principle, if you don’t have a puller, you can get by with a pry bar. A few hours before work, clean the threaded connections from dirt with a wire brush and treat them with liquid wrench. Replacement is carried out in the following order:

  • First, jack up the car and remove the wheel. The steering knuckle is turned to its maximum position;
  • Using pliers, remove the cotter pin from the castle nut, after which it is unscrewed;
  • Lightly tap the pin fastening with a hammer. Use a puller to remove it from the steering knuckle. If this action is performed using a mount, you will have to tinker a little. To remove it, you need to press the tip with the mounting tool. At the same time tapping the steering knuckle mount with a hammer. The most difficult thing is to rip the hinge out of place;
  • Next, use a caliper to measure the distance from the middle of the ball to the rod. This will help avoid problems with wheel alignment. If uneven wear of the rubber has been observed, then you don’t have to bother with measurements. You will still have to go to a service center to check and install the angles;
  • Loosen the locknut and twist the tip;
  • Before installation, lubricate the threaded connection of the rod and the tip with grease. Lithol is good for this;
  • Screw the end onto the rod. Don't forget to set it to the previously measured distance. After this, tighten the locknut;
  • Press the pin into the mounting ear of the steering knuckle. Next, lubricant is also applied to it, and the nut is screwed on. After tightening it, the connection is pinned.

Preparatory activities

Many experts advise taking certain steps to prepare for the replacement so that everything goes easier and faster. These actions include the following.

  1. Treat all nuts and fasteners with penetrating liquid. WD40 works great.
  2. If the tips last longer than one winter, to remove their fist you will need to use a 17 socket to unscrew the nuts.
  3. If the nuts stick, try heating them with a hair dryer. A gas burner is also suitable, but you need to be as careful as possible with it.
  4. Prepare tools for removing tips.

Today, two methods are used to dismantle steering tips - modern and traditional. The first involves the use of a special puller, and the second - a sledgehammer.

Jack and WD40 at the ready

The traditional dismantling method involves the following actions:

  • The steering wheel is turned all the way;
  • Several strong blows are applied to the steering knuckle;
  • Vibration causes the tip to pop out.

But the method has two serious drawbacks.

  1. It will take special skill to deliver precise, but at the same time accurate and strong blows.
  2. This method can reduce the service life of steering racks.

You can literally buy it for 200-300 rubles, but it will be useful in the future and will significantly preserve the integrity of the remaining parts when replacing the launch vehicle.

Dismantling works

Replacement

The replacement procedure is quite simple. Especially if you have prepared the connecting elements in advance and acquired a puller.

  1. Using a jack, lift one of the sides where you will begin to change the tips.
  2. Turn the steering wheel to such an extent that it is convenient for you to replace damaged elements.
  3. Treat the elements again with a penetrating liquid.
  4. Unscrew the fastening nut.
  5. Remove the tip from the steering knuckle hole. Here you just need a puller or the traditional old-fashioned method using a sledgehammer.
  6. Check the condition of the steering rods. Sometimes it is better to replace them in the first couple of wears. Besides, you still got into this knot.
  7. Replace damaged tips with new ones.
  8. Perform the reassembly procedure.

Assembly

  1. Do the same with the second wheel.
  2. We recommend that you think additionally about protecting threaded fasteners from moisture and dirt. To do this, the threads can be lubricated with lithol, graphite grease, a tube of a suitable diameter can be put on, or heat shrink can be used.
  3. After completing the replacement of the steering tips, visit a service station to adjust the wheel alignment.
  4. If you don’t want to go to a service station, then count in advance the number of revolutions when removing the old tip. The new one is twisted by the same number of revolutions.
  5. Drive onto a straight road and check whether the car does not skid to the sides when driving in a straight line.

One of the main conditions for a successful replacement is the choice of quality parts.

Replacing the steering tip of a VAZ 2109

Replacing the steering tip on a VAZ 2109 will take literally half an hour, if you have the right tools. To carry out the procedure, it is not even necessary to have a hole.

A lot has already been said about how important it is to monitor the serviceability of the steering. However, we will still dwell on them. A small educational program about why timely replacement of steering tips on a VAZ 2109 is so important.

First of all, safety. On the road, the wheel makes a huge amount of vertical and horizontal vibrations, the steering tip, ball joint, silent blocks, wheel bearings - all of this experiences a colossal load. Therefore, it may happen that the tip finger is simply torn out of its seat. Further consequences are unpredictable, it all depends on the speed of movement.

Now let's proceed directly to the instructions. First of all, you need to get long keys for 27 and 2. When we say “long”, we mean about 80 cm, no less, otherwise it is simply unrealistic to rip off the locking couplings.

If we change the right tip, then we turn the steering wheel to the left, if we change the left tip, then vice versa. In general, if it is possible to carry out operations with a removed wheel, then it is worth doing just that. Using a 22 wrench, unscrew the nut securing the tip in the bipod of the strut, then dry this very tip with hammer blows.

Next, we open the hood, find the rods that come from the rack, after which we hold the coupling with a 24 key, and unscrew the nut with another 27 key. On the right side the nut unscrews towards the front, and on the left – towards the interior, it’s worth remembering. Now remove the old tip. We install the new one by screwing it on with about the same number of threads as the old one. After this, tighten the coupling locknut.

Carrying out repairs

All work can be done without an inspection hole or overpass. Especially if you have a carburetor car. There are far fewer components under the hood to get in the way of the job. Be sure to install stops under the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling away during repairs. First loosen the wheel bolts, then use a jack to lift the side to be repaired. After this, you can completely unscrew the wheel bolts and remove them. Using pliers, remove the cotter pins that hold the tip nuts from turning. And then on the VAZ-2109, replacing steering tips proceeds without problems.

Using a 19 mm spanner, unscrew the nut. Now you need to disconnect the tip directly from the rod. To do this, you need to use a 27mm wrench. It is advisable to unscrew the retaining nuts before the tip is removed from the steering knuckle. When unscrewing the tip, be sure to count the number of turns. When installing a new one, screw it in the same number of turns. This will allow you to at least roughly adjust the wheel alignment.

Replacing steering tips on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars

Steering ends (steering rod ends) of VAZ 2108, 21081, 21083, 2109, 21091, 21093, 21099 cars are ball joints consisting of a body, a liner, a liner spring, a pin, and a protective rubber boot (boot).
The tie rod end connects the steering arm on the strut to the inner (long) rod that attaches to the steering rack. Over time, the liners that tighten the movable joints in the tips are destroyed, which leads to an increase in play when the steering wheel rotates and characteristic frequent knocks in the suspension when driving over uneven surfaces. If we identify a failed tie rod end, we replace it with a new one.

Tools needed to replace the tie rod end

  • 27 mm open-end wrench , to loosen the locknut of the tip.
  • 24 mm open-end wrench , to keep the long rod coupling and the tip from turning.
  • 19 mm socket wrench for loosening the nut securing the tie rod end pin.
  • Tip puller or mounting spudger for detaching the tip pin from the swing arm on the stand.
  • 22 mm spanner for loosening the bolts securing the steering rods to the steering rack.
  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • We put the car on the handbrake and gear
  • We put chocks under the wheels
  • We loosen the tightening of the wheel bolts where we are going to change the tip
  • Jack up and remove one of the front wheels of the car
  • We clean the tie rod end and adjacent parts from contamination.

What difficulties might there be?

It is usually difficult to disassemble the unit in which the steering rod 2109 is connected to the tip. After all, dirt, water very often gets on it, and most importantly, there is a constantly hot engine nearby. This causes the thread to become dirty. And even penetrating lubricant is powerless. Therefore, you can use a little trick. It is necessary to completely remove the steering rod along with the tip.

To do this, use a 10mm wrench to unscrew the metal strip that covers the rail. Then, using a 22mm wrench, unscrew the bolt, first pressing out the lock washer. After this, you can remove the steering wheel without any problems. Using a steering wheel end puller, remove the joint from the steering knuckle. Then heat the threaded connection. Gently tap the nuts with a small hammer. In this case, all dirt and rust will be destroyed and the threaded connection will be freed. Using wrenches, just unscrew the nuts and install a new tip.

Replacing the steering tip on a VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099

Welcome! Steering ends are the basis of the steering rod, they are made in the form of a hinge that is pressed into the body, this hinge is inserted into the hole in the swing arm of the strut and when you turn the steering wheel, this hinge moves the wheel in the direction you want and thereby turns the car.

Note! To replace the tips, you need to stock up on: A special puller that comes specifically for ball joints, as well as all the keys that you have in your arsenal and pliers with a screwdriver!

Summary:

Where is the tie rod? As we have already said, it consists of a body and a ball joint, the joint at the tip is inserted into the hole (Indicated by a blue arrow), to easily find it, you will have to remove the wheel from the car and look at the telescopic stand, indicated just below in the photo by a red arrow , location of the tie rod end in the chassis of the vehicle.

When should you change the tie rod end? The tip has a boot, for clarity, we indicated it with a green arrow in the photo above, if this boot is torn, then immediately change the tip without thinking, even if in your opinion it is still in good condition, then after a while it will still come out out of order and the sooner you replace it, the better, if the boots are torn, dirt gets clogged into the joint and water gets in, because of this the lubricant is quickly washed out and instead of it, particles of dirt appear in the joint, because of this there is play in the steering wheel, it begins to vibrate and the car begins to respond much worse when turning the steering wheel of the car.

Note! The tips become unusable due to several reasons, the first is when the boot breaks, the second is from time to time, when driving, friction occurs at the ball joint between itself and the hole into which it is inserted (Into the rack), and the third reason is insufficient quantity lubricant that the manufacturer did not really put in or that simply dried out and was washed off over time!

How to replace the steering tip on a VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099?

Note! Before changing the tip, make sure that this is what your car really needs. To check the tip for play, perform the following operation: drive the car into the inspection hole and grab the steering rod with your hand (there is still a steering tip on it) and shake the steering rod with your hand. (Down, up), while you are shaking the rod, look at the ball joint of the steering tip, if it wobbles (there is play), then change the steering tip in the near future with a new one (Another tip, in exactly the same way check), if it turns out that both tips are serviceable and work normally, but there is still play in the steering wheel, then look at the steering rack, maybe it is to blame for this play!

Removal: 1. Let's briefly explain that replacing the steering tip is not difficult, especially when you have a puller at hand, well, let's start, first remove the wheel (For information on how to remove a wheel, read the article: “Replacing a wheel on a car”) with car, then take WD-40 lubricant or something like it and use a brush to clean the nut that secures the steering linkage to the steering arm and, using pliers, remove the cotter pin that prevents this nut from coming loose (It is indicated by the red arrow), and when it is removed , completely unscrew the nut and remove it (Indicated by a blue arrow) and using special. puller, press the ball joint pin out of the hole into which it goes (see small photo) and then loosen the nut with a wrench (indicated by the green arrow) due to which the tip is attached to the steering rod, unscrew it, then turn the tip counterclockwise by hand (When turning it out be sure to count how many revolutions the tip makes, tighten the new one exactly the same number).

Note! If suddenly you need to change the boot at the steering tip or fill it with more grease, then you will need to remove it as follows: first, the metal ring will need to be removed along the ball joint pin (see photo 1), then prying it with a screwdriver, remove the stopper that holds the boot on the hinge (see photo 2) and you can safely then remove the boot itself from the hinge and fill the joint with grease, just reconnect the boot so that it fits into the groove and fasten it tightly so that no dirt or dirt gets under it moisture!

Installation: The tip on the tie rod is installed in the reverse order of removal and so that the camber does not get too lost, turn it back to the same speed as was said earlier.

Tools and accessories for repair

Of course, you need to buy the tie rod ends directly. It is advisable to choose the production of one of the three.

  • Stock ones, which are supplied to the AvtoVAZ conveyor.
  • "Belmag".
  • You need to pay attention to the fact that AvtoVAZ produces cars, not spare parts for them! Therefore, to say that the steering ends were produced by the AvtoVAZ company is completely wrong. All spare parts are produced on the territory of our vast country, as well as in near and far abroad.

    It would be more correct to say that you need to purchase stock elements. These are the ones that are installed by the vehicle manufacturer. But this does not mean that they are produced by the same plant. It is highly undesirable to buy tie rod ends that have been restored. They are unlikely to last more than a month or two. If we take into account the fact that steering ends, the price of which does not exceed 400-450 rubles, can be found in any store, it turns out to be easier to purchase new ones. You will also need to buy nuts and locking pins. Anthers, as a rule, are already installed on the tips, and there is lubricant inside. And the most important thing is a steering tip remover; you can’t do without it.
