How long to pump winter tires
In winter, it is customary to slightly reduce blood pressure compared to summer. This helps improve traction. Thus, the indicators can be reduced for soft rubber to 0.8 atmospheres, and for regular tires to 1.2.
Standard testing of winter tires, carried out by experts from leading auto publications such as Autoreview, is designed to find out how tires behave in the following conditions:
- ice tracks;
- snowy road;
- clean highway.
And also inside and outside the city. The indicators check the grip level by determining the braking distance, acceleration speed and cornering control.
When choosing suitable winter tires, you should pay attention to its cost and compare it with the budget that you are willing to allocate for it. Today the market offers models of three price classes - low, middle and premium. At the same time, within each of them, products are ranked depending on the authority of the brand.
The lower price category includes brands such as Cordiant or Kumho. The cost of their tires for the cold season ranges from 3-4.5 thousand rubles per piece. Prices in the middle price category, which includes Nordman, BF Goodrich or Nokian, range from 5-8 thousand rubles. And over 8 thousand sell premium-segment wheels.
Responsible owners of iron horses have a separate set of wheels for each season: summer and winter. Many even purchase special tires to overcome mud. This approach seems to be the most correct. Although there are still those who believe that since the Chevrolet Niva is positioned as an SUV, there is no need to change summer tires with the onset of cold weather.
However, savings in this case are unacceptable.
- The aerodynamics of an SUV are not its strongest side, so a car with all-wheel drive and high ground clearance does not have high stability on slippery surfaces.
- Off-road qualities are manifested not at all on an icy road, but off-road.
- The weight of 4x4 vehicles is significantly higher compared to their passenger counterparts, which is why they are characterized by greater inertia and, accordingly, longer braking distances.
So you can’t ignore the rules that apply to owners of regular hatchbacks or sedans. As you know, for different seasons, tires are made from certain rubber compounds that differ in ductility in different temperature ranges. Summer tires lose their elasticity, which largely determines the car’s behavior on the road, already at 5 degrees; all-season tires can be used down to -5.
When choosing tires, you should focus on the climatic conditions of the region. Many people are concerned about the question of whether it is possible to install all-season wheels on a Niva. If there is no frost or snow in winter, then you can opt for these tire models. Frequent trips to icy surfaces require the installation of studded tires.
And, of course, do not forget that the tires change on both axles and all tires must be the same (from the same manufacturer and the same parameters).
Only by observing these requirements can you ensure comfort and safety for yourself and others.
Previously, at the factory, cars were equipped with Kama tires with standard sizes 185/75 R16. However, it should be noted that the Niva has a rather low landing. And these tires are not intended for an SUV at all, as they instantly become clogged with dirt.
For winter, it is recommended to opt for tires in sizes 215/65. But, in addition to geometric parameters, a well-chosen brand of winter tires is important. For those who are studying winter tires for Niva 4x4: this review can help you understand the range offered.

This tire is designed specifically for 4x4 SUVs. It behaves well not only in cold weather, but also during temperature changes. The profile, slightly rounded, helps not to lose traction when turning.
Designed specifically for countries with cold climates in winter, these tires perform well on the road in all weather conditions. A drop in fuel consumption for cars equipped with these tires was also noted. This option is worthy of consideration by those choosing winter wheels for the Niva.
Cordiant Polar SL
Tires without studs, the cost of which is quite budgetary, perform excellently when the thermometer readings drop below -5 degrees. Therefore, it is not recommended to visit a tire service long before frost. In winter, rubber copes well with ice, and even better with slush.
Kumho I'Zen KW22
Tires with studs perform well when moving on ice. They are budget friendly. However, over the course of a season, you can lose almost a fifth of your studs (especially if you drive on asphalt surfaces).
The rubber is characterized by decent cross-country ability; it starts and brakes well on ice crust. The spikes are quite securely fastened; they practically do not fly out when driving. The tires don't handle snow so well. In addition, they are characterized by a high noise level (when driving at speeds greater than 60 km/h). The price of tires is quite reasonable.
Reviews from those who have already tested this rubber testify to its merits, even without taking into account the brand. What can we say about the tires: they are not too noisy and perform well on icy surfaces. Thorns are practically not lost during the season. Wheels dressed in this tire cope somewhat worse with loose snow slush. But in terms of price/quality ratio, these are good winter wheels for the Niva.
In the middle price segment, this model stands out for its ability to hold both icy road surfaces and loose snow slush well. Moreover, in the latter case, it does this no worse than tires designed for driving on mud. The studs that are installed on the tires have an interesting shape. They are square. Due to this they have special tenacity. Moreover, they hold quite firmly in the tire.
If the car accelerates to a speed of about 70 km/h, a noise can be clearly heard. However, this is typical for almost all tires with studs. In connection with the above, this option can be recommended to those who are deciding which winter tires are best for the Chevrolet Niva.
The purchase of winter tires should not be delayed until the onset of cold weather. It’s better to worry about equipping your iron horse in advance.
The purchase of winter tires should be based on the area of use of the car. If the car is used primarily for hunting and fishing, you will need an aggressive model installed on standard stampings. Serious lugs combined with rolled steel provide decent grip and minimal likelihood of damage to the sidewall when hitting an obstacle.
The most popular solutions for 3 and 5 door Niva on the market are the following tires:
- KAMA Euro LCV;
- Rossava LTW;
- Good Year Cargo Ultra Grip;
- NOKIAN WRC3;
- Gislaved Nord Frost 100;
- Kumho KW 7400.
The choice of tire type depends on the area where the vehicle is used. When asking whether it is necessary to install studs on a Niva, you should refer to the use of a car. If driving is carried out in the city, where the roads are normally cleaned and there are no strong sweeps, installing studded versions is unprofitable. Thanks to all-wheel drive, the car velcros out even from difficult sections of the road.
It's another matter when the car is racing in deep snow. Here the presence of metal inserts will not be unnecessary.
How to choose tires for Niva?
All Niva models are equipped with tires of size 175/80 R16 or 185/75 R16 (depending on the vehicle modification and wheel design), since they provide the necessary cross-country ability, regardless of the road surface.
If tires of another brand are used, then the car wheels should not exceed 215 mm in width.
We figured out the tire size, but besides this point there are other important points that you should pay attention to when choosing products:
- Seasonality . Winter and summer tires contain different types of rubber, or rather mixtures. Consequently, the level of tire hardness will vary. Therefore, you need to purchase tires that suit the season.
- Drainage system . Between the tread blocks there should be wide, roomy recesses (the so-called “grooves”). The latter provide moisture removal and create traction with road soil, mud, grass, etc.
- Presence/absence of thorns . Studded tires are relevant in cases where the car owner travels at low temperatures (in the cold, snowstorm, snow, etc.), as well as when driving on mud or off-road. In comfortable urban conditions there is no need to use such tires.
- Rating of the manufacturer . The higher the rating of the brand, the better the quality of the Niva tires and vice versa.
- Price . Another important point, which in most cases plays a decisive role when choosing a suitable model.
These are the most important parameters that you should pay attention to.
Tires for lifting and without
The cornerstone of the tire selection issue is the need for additional modifications. There are a number of proposals that fit perfectly onto a standard VAZ 21214 car wheel and do not require widening of wheel arches, etc. work. It is important to understand which tires require mandatory lifting, and which ones will become like native tires on your Niva without any problems.
If you are one of those drivers who don’t need an extra headache, then the almost standard version of tires like 205/70 R15 or 205/75 R15 is exactly your choice. Having a large profile width and height, they absolutely painlessly replace standard wheels, seriously adding cross-country ability and aesthetic power to your iron horse. If you select tires for standard rims, then the 215/65 R16 option is perfect; a further increase in the tire profile, even by reducing the radial diameter, will certainly lead to rubber rubbing during deep turns on the wheel arch protectors (we are talking about 215/75 R15 and higher , it’s better not to install such wheels without modifications).
Some tire options can only be installed by widening the arches
Lifting slightly expands the range of choices and also significantly increases the cross-country ability of your car. A spartan kit that allows you to raise the height of the suspension costs about 4 thousand rubles and is easy to install with your own hands right in the garage thanks to detailed instructions. The clearance of the VAZ 2121 increases and it becomes possible to install really serious off-road tires (235/70 R16, 235/75 R15 or 240/80 R15).

Toyo Proxes CF2 SUV
I tried Toyo for the first time, before that there were Nokian, Goodyear, Danlon, Continental. First of all, I wanted good handling at a reasonable price. Analogs cost 2-3 thousand rubles more. Size 235/55/18, RX machine. The impressions are good. It takes turns well even at 100, does not float up in the water, large longitudinal grooves, quiet, although at first it seemed noisier than the winter Nokian RS. And what is important for me is that the handling is almost like that of Kontik or Goodyear, but at the same time it does not swallow stones like Conti; last summer I took out stones during installation 4 times!! and not oaky in the cold like Eagle F1. Balances normally, on average 50-60 grams per wheel. But I’ve had my own wheels for years now, partly because of them. I've driven about 6-7 thousand on them already, everything is fine. And wear is low, maybe enough for 3 seasons. The above mentioned were enough for 1.5-2 seasons maximum. Overall good tires. And 30 tr. per set, much nicer than 40+!

Hankook Tire Dynapro MT RT03
I've been riding on these tires on my second car for about 6 years in total. Completely satisfied! I get everything I wanted from her with interest! The mileage is 50% asphalt, 30% primer and 20% mockery of the car in a mess. Universal tires, no matter where I go, I feel confident on any surface! But not on ice, the snow porridge goes through with a bang, but you shouldn’t even try to go on the ice, it doesn’t move or stop! For use from +0 and above! Very wear-resistant, if you maintain the correct pressure on the asphalt, it will last a very long time! It had a mileage of 75,000 on Toyota Surf, and I sold it with it, it was still in good condition. Now it is on the X-Trail. In front of her stood Dunapro ATM and winter Kumho. These tires are better in handling than ATM both in puddles and on the beach, only the ATM will be quieter, but do not forget that this is an MT and no noise at all is not realistic. Sturdy, stuck into stones, into cold holes at high speed, rubber even without scratches! She looks very nice, the white lettering really adds to her toothy appearance! I liked the very wide selection of sizes, for every taste and color! If you cut the rubber, it’s white inside, like a cake with white filling (I was surprised) Would you buy more? Of course, without even thinking! You don't need another one!

Toyo Nanoenergy Van
On the gazelle both in winter and summer without taking off, mileage from April 2022 to today February 2022. 75000km. Regular overload of tires by 2 times. Approximately 50% wear. During the entire run I only inflated the tires once. My blood pressure is 4.3. I RECOMMEND, SUPER TIRES. Before this H09, the rear axle ran 170-000 km. Tires work 200%

Cordiant Comfort 2 SUV
A week on new tires in size 225-60-17, Qashqai+2. Before it, Yokohama Suv and Bridgestone were standard from the factory. I will compare with them. At the very least, it’s no worse, and considering that it’s quiet and cheaper, it’s correspondingly better. Ride quality is quite decent. Definitely no worse than bridge and even more so yoki. The protector looks quite modern, unlike the same yoki. The bridge was the noisiest, the yoka was demolished quite quickly. I noticed Cordiant after I bought snocross winter tires two years ago. The dollar has become expensive, and so have all imported tires. I was very pleasantly surprised by these tires after two winters considering the price. Now I took the summer one and I was very pleased with my expectations. The main advantage is that it is quiet, even on rough asphalt. This is probably the quietest tire I've had in all my years on different cars. By the way, winter snowcross is also very quiet, like summer snowcross or even quieter. When balancing the wheels, the installers placed quite large weights, which surprised me. However, on the highway I drove the car at speeds up to 150, no beats. By the way, the yoku could still ride until the end of the season, but due to wear and tear at speeds above 110 it became completely uncomfortable to ride, especially when loaded, the beating was very strong. And I often go fishing laden and at good speeds. In general, I recommend it. For this money you are unlikely to find something better. And even for more money, you most likely won’t find anything better. I'm glad for the domestic manufacturer, well done.

BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2
I’ve been using the tires for over a year; I installed them on a Pajero Sport 2 last summer and haven’t taken them off. I didn't expect such positivity in everything. When I bought it, I was a little stifled by the toad, but as soon as the tires were put on the car, they immediately began to let go. Having driven more than a thousand kilometers on it in a year, I can say with confidence that the tires are worth the money, don’t think twice about taking them, unless of course you are going to climb into the muck over the mirrors. As for winter... my wife has Velcro on the FV polo, the KO2 definitely holds the road no worse in winter, on ice any tires without studs will not slow down (naturally, I did not turn off permanent all-wheel drive in winter). I was very pleasantly surprised at how quiet the tires were on the highway, I read a lot of reviews before purchasing, something like “there is noise but it’s not critical,” so I was prepared for a little noise, BUT IT IS NOT!!! (apparently due to the fact that the tread in the central part of the rubber is shallow). And in conclusion: I never wrote reviews, I was always skeptical about them, I thought, well, who needs this... This tire deserves to be talked about!

KAMA I-511
I took a set of studded ones for the winter - it’s just a fairy tale! 3 days ago, the traffic police caught up with me at night, when they stopped me, they immediately paid attention to the tires: “What, are they good?” - they said, “... and we thought someone was drunk, he was turning in a field on ice at such a speed!” The documents were checked and drove off.
