How to change the oil in the variator on a Mitsubishi Outlander 3 with your own hands?

The third generation of Mitsubishi Outlander cars appeared on the Russian market in 2012. Today, many of them already have a significant mileage, and the warranty period, during which the service is carried out in an official car service center, is over for them.

If the oil in the CVT gearbox (variator) has not been changed before the end of the warranty, then car owners often carry out this operation on their own.

Changing transmission oil in a Mitsubishi Outlander 3 does not require much effort and allows you to save on car service costs.

In this article we will look at the procedure for changing the oil yourself in a Mitsubishi Outlander 3 variator.

When should you change your oil?

A variator as one of the types of gearboxes has been installed on a car relatively recently. However, over the course of several years, this type of transmission has become one of the most popular, due to a number of advantages in which it outperforms automatic transmissions. So, today, the CVT is installed in Mitsubishi Outlander XL and Mitsubishi Outlander 3 cars.

The CVT transmission on Mitsubishi Outlander XL, 3 cars is more capricious than a regular one (automatic), but with proper care, the mechanism can last much longer. Like an automatic transmission, a CVT requires periodic inspection and replacement of parts, namely oily fluid.

According to the maintenance regulations, the fluid filled at the factory cannot be replaced, however, experienced mechanics do not agree with this statement and recommend changing the solution every 90,000 km, which is equal to 6 years of operation of the vehicle. At the same time, the frequency of fluid changes also depends on the method of operation of the vehicle. If you drive aggressively, the oil should be changed every 45 thousand kilometers.

Signs of changing the oil in the variator:

  • periodic slipping of the vehicle when driving on a flat road surface;
  • the presence of vibration and noise when switching the gearbox;
  • immobility of the gearshift lever.

Work order

Before starting to work directly with the lubricant in the Mitsubishi Outlander box, we determine the level. It is advisable to perform the procedure after the box has warmed up (temperature of the working fluid is 90°C), using a special probe with which the unit is equipped. Having removed the probe from the holder, special marks are applied to the surface: “Cold” and “Hot”. On a properly operating, warmed-up unit, the value corresponds to the “Hot” label. The level of the new fluid is brought to the initial value.

Important! It is extremely important to maintain a constant, correct level of working fluid in the box. Changing the value, either upward or downward, leads to negative consequences for the operation of the unit.

Procedure:

Draining the working fluid from the box:

  • We install the vehicle on a pit, overpass, lift;
  • We measure and remember the initial value of the liquid in the box;
  • We dismantle the device protecting the bottom of the box;
  • We install a watering can to drain the waste from the box, lower the end of the watering can into a previously prepared container;
  • Unscrew the drain plug of the box;
  • We drain the waste from the box;
  • We measure the drained amount of oil from the box, the volume corresponds to six liters;

Cleaning the variator from waste fluid residues:

  • We tighten the drain hole of the box with a plug and washer;
  • Through the hole for installing the dipstick, we fill the variator with clean liquid, the displacement corresponds to the drained liquid;
  • Install the probe into the hole in the box;
  • We start the engine, warm up for 2-3 minutes, move the gearbox selector lever to possible modes with pauses between switches of 30 seconds;
  • We carry out the switching procedure ten times or more;
  • Turn off the engine;
  • We carry out the procedure of draining the oil from the box;
  • We dismantle the gearbox crankcase, carefully draining the remaining liquid;
  • We inspect the crankcase and box magnets for damage, clean them with detergent from dirt and residual metal impurities;
  • We inspect the accessible parts of the box for damage, and if found, ask for help;
  • Remove and clean the filter element of the box, let it dry;
  • We remove the old seal between the box body and the crankcase;
  • We install the filter and box housing in place, first replacing the gasket with a new one;
  • We tighten the drain plug of the box;

Filling the system with new fluid:

  • Through the control hole, we fill the box with fresh liquid, in a volume corresponding to the drained volume;
  • We start the power plant, monitor the correct operation of the box;
  • We control the fluid level in the box according to the corresponding marks on the unit, and if there is a shortage, add in small portions;
  • We check the box for leaks, and if found, we eliminate the cause.

Important! After carrying out the replacement procedure, every 20-30 km we monitor whether there are signs of oil leakage through the crankcase seals. If the result is positive, we eliminate the cause of the leak and add fluid to the required level.

Differences between CVTs on Outlander XL and Outlander 3

Many motorists are skeptical about CVTs, preferring to purchase cars with an automatic transmission. This is mainly due to the capriciousness of the mechanics. By right, in previous models of Outlanders, the transmission was noisy and also had poor speed dynamics. In the third generation, the manufacturer improved the mechanism. Thus, Outlander 3 cars have great acceleration properties. In addition, the gearbox operates in silent mode.

According to reviews from owners, it is not recommended to fill in the manufacturer’s oil RAVENOL ATF NS2/J1 Fluid. They write that there were cases of automatic transmission failure.

Changing the oil in the Mitsubishi Outlander XL and Outlander 3 variator

Before draining the fluid from the Mitsubishi Outlander XL variator, you need to check the oil level. For convenience, a probe is used.

The location of the variator can be found by looking at the image below.

It is recommended to warm up the car before changing the oil. In this case, the liquid level will be as accurate as possible. The dipstick contains the corresponding o and “HOT”.

How to drain oil from a variator?

In order to drain the oil from the variator yourself, you must follow a certain procedure.

Stages of work:

  • drive the car onto a lift or into a pit;
  • determine the oil level using a dipstick;
  • remove the crankcase protection by unscrewing the front and rear bolts
  • thoroughly clean the gearbox housing from dirt and dust;
  • drain the liquid.

It will take approximately 1 hour to completely drain the mixture.

How to flush the variator?

Cleaning the CVT system is a mandatory task that must be done when changing the oil. However, many drivers are wondering: how to properly flush the variator? The answer is quite simple. To thoroughly wash the part, you must follow the step-by-step instructions:

  • after draining the liquid, tighten the cap of the expansion tank;
  • fill in new oil using a watering can to the maximum mark (approximately 6 l);
  • secure the dipstick in place;
  • start the engine and keep the mechanism running for several minutes;
  • change each gear within 30 seconds. This is necessary so that the old liquid that remains in the variator is mixed with the new solution;
  • turn off the engine and drain the fluid again;
  • unscrew the retaining bolts, remove the crankcase and drain all remaining oily solution;
  • check the crankcase for wear products (carbon deposits, metal shavings, defects, corrosion). If any, the box is cleaned with acetone;
  • check the variator components;
  • remove the filter element for cleaning the liquid, rinse it;
  • put all the parts in place and screw the lid in the reverse order.

How to fill oil into a variator?

To properly change the oil in the Mitsubishi Outlander 3 variator, strict adherence to the sequence of actions is necessary.

Operating instructions:

  • the same amount of oil is poured into the expansion tank as was drained last time;
  • then you need to turn on the engine and change all gears several times;
  • Next, check the oil level at the MAX mark;
  • if necessary, add liquid.

It is especially important to check the mechanism for leaks, so the driver needs to crawl under the car and inspect the mechanism.

What is needed for replacement

According to the passport, the total amount of oil in the Mitsubishi Outlander variator is 7.3 liters. However, replacement will require about 5 liters. A complete replacement on this box is a rather labor-intensive operation.

Therefore, the vast majority of car enthusiasts practice partial. Moreover, in this case the oil is renewed by almost 70%.

For replacement, it is recommended to purchase original oil from Mitsubishi CVT Fluid J4 or its equivalent. When using analogues after replacement, you must be extremely attentive to the operation of the variator.

If any malfunctions occur in the operation of the CVT box, you should replace the oil with the original one as soon as possible. However, with the right selection, this happens extremely rarely.

Filter 2824A008

The fine filter must be changed. It is located in the heat exchanger housing. On the restyled Outlander model, the location of the filter is slightly changed: here it is installed in a separate housing mounted on the engine crankcase.

Additionally, you need to purchase a copper gasket for the drain plug and a box housing gasket. If the replacement is made for the third or fourth time, it is advisable to replace the sealing ring of the fine oil filter housing and the coarse filter.

How to check the oil level

Periodically you need to check the oil level in the Mitsubishi CVT box to prevent its volume from falling below the set level. To do this you will need:

  1. Start the car, drive for some distance until it warms up a little to a temperature of more than 70 degrees.
  2. Place the machine on a flat surface.
  3. Move the switch lever to any position to fill the torque converter with oil, then set it to “P” or “N” mode.
  4. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it off from grease, then put it back in place and check the fluid level after removing it again. With normal volume, the indicator should be between the HOT marks.

A deviation upward or downward indicates, respectively, an excess or deficiency of transmission oil.
