  • short-circuit the contacts (with a knife, screwdriver or something else) located on its retractor relay;
  • the car starts.

Dealing with the wires

It is necessary to remove the plastic protection from the steering column to gain access to the wires of the contact group. Your focus will be on the wires that are connected to the ignition switch. They are often divided into three groups:

  • the power supply to the lock is the wire that comes from the battery;
  • power distribution across the main vehicle systems;
  • supplying power to the starter.

Also among this bundle of wires there will definitely be a grounding wire, which we are looking for first. This wire is the only black color. If your car uses an alternative electrical wiring diagram, the ground wire will be green.

Next we go in search of the power wire. Often it has a yellow or red color - the brightest and most voluminous wire of the entire contact group. To be sure of the correct choice of wires, it would be great to use a multitester or a regular light bulb. If power wires , then you can start the car only by tying them all into one bundle.

The most difficult process is finding the wire that supplies power to the starter. There is only one way to do this: check each wire one by one. It is necessary to connect the remaining wires with power and look at the result. One will turn on the lights, the other will trigger the alarm, and so on. This will take you to the starter wire, which needs to be marked somehow. Next comes the most crucial moment.

At least three wires are connected to the lock - from the battery, from the starter and a ground wire. Your task is to figure out which wire is responsible for what and connect them correctly.

Grounding is usually black or green; it can be determined using a tester. When this wire is grounded to the car body, the needle will remain at zero. So the two remaining wires are what you need. The ground wire must be properly insulated because if it touches other wires during operation, the wiring may burn out. We connect the wires of the starter and battery to each other, power is supplied to the starter, the engine starts working and we calmly go about our business. Then the starter wire must also be insulated so that the starter does not accidentally start turning during a trip.

Please also note that the ignition switch in more modern cars is connected not to three, but to many more wires, which are responsible for different positions of the key in the lock:

0 — power off; 1 - the ignition is turned off, but power is supplied to other consumers - headlights, radio, sensors, etc.; 2 - power is supplied to the starter.

This results in three groups of contacts, each of which is marked with its own color:

grounding - black or green; power - red or yellow - this wire is usually the thickest; The starter wire is usually orange.

Again, identify the ground wire. Then lightly pass it along all the other wires, but do not short them, all those that will spark are responsible for powering the car system. Connect them securely to each other and close them with the starter wire - the car should start. Disconnect the starter wire, isolate it and go look for the car keys.

Of course, all this sounds very nice, but if you do something wrong or mix up the wires, then you can burn both the sensors and wiring, and if the car has “brains” - an on-board computer, then it is generally undesirable to get into the contact groups, it’s better to wait for specialists or call a tow truck. Second method. We start the car without a key.

It is also worth noting that in some old cars you don’t even need to remove the steering column cover, but just remove the ignition switch cylinder, behind it we will see a small recess that you just need to turn with a screwdriver to start the car. But these are already very rare cars from the domestic automobile industry of the 60s and 70s.

This method may also be suitable for more modern cars, although the ignition switch will need to be completely broken and cannot be restored. You need to take a drill, install it just above the keyhole and drill approximately to the depth of the key. This will destroy the locking pins that follow the shape of the key. You need to repeat this several times, and then try to turn the lock using a thin screwdriver. After this operation, the car should start, but you will have to completely change the ignition switch, depending on the model, it can be very expensive.

Third method. How to start a car without a key

It consists of connecting the wire of the ignition coil (distributor) to the battery positive - this is how we turn on the ignition. Then we run a wire from the starter terminal to the same plus of the battery - the engine should start.
