During the systematic refueling of a vehicle with low-quality fuel, sediment forms at the bottom of the tank and the line becomes clogged. Passive acceleration dynamics and increased gasoline consumption are the first signs of a decrease in the throughput of the TF.
In cars of the Opel family of modifications Astra N, Astra J, Astra G, fuel filters (hereinafter referred to as TF) are installed in the following order:
- gasoline engines: TF is built into the housing with a fuel pump, non-separable design, must be replaced as an assembly;
- diesel: the TF is autonomous from the power unit. As a rule, it is fixed at a safe distance from the fuel rail and injectors.
For the purpose of prevention, use the inspection channel, roadside overpass, or hydraulic lift.
The process of replacing the filter yourself is not at all difficult, but it requires care on the part of the repairman. Seek help from a car repair shop specialist if you have never had to service your vehicle.

What is a fuel filter
In any car, TF is an integral element of cleaning the fuel system. As stated above, this small, inconspicuous part determines the operation of the car as a whole, since it is responsible for the most important process. Namely, for purifying fuel from foreign impurities and moisture (pure gasoline can hardly be found at domestic gas stations).
Today we will tell you about the cleaning fuel cell in Opel Zafira cars. These cars are available in two versions: with gasoline and diesel engines. Cars with gasoline engines require careful and high-quality fuel filtration. This is necessary so that the injector nozzles do not become clogged for a long time, otherwise the car is guaranteed to have abnormal engine operation.
Used TF Opel Zafira with a gasoline engine
As for diesel modifications, these engines are no less sensitive to the quality of the fuel they fill. Diesel cleaning elements filter fuel in three stages:
- pre-cleaning;
- rough cleaning (continuation of preliminary);
- fine fuel cleaning.
Diesel cars require a triple level of filtration due to the fact that D/T (diesel fuel) contains an order of magnitude more condensate or moisture than traditional gasoline. And since the mass of water is higher than the weight of the fuel, it settles at the bottom of the filter, but, thanks to its design, is optimally removed.
But if the filter component becomes clogged over time, then the water in it, accordingly, becomes more. When the humidity reaches a critical level, it must be drained from the filter. At this moment, a special sensor located at the very bottom of the diesel cleaning element housing will signal the driver about the problem via a light on the instrument panel. To the inconvenience of owners of diesel Opel Zafira, the fuel purifier is located in such a place that even if you want to drain the water from it, you still have to remove the filter housing.
New diesel TF for Opel Zafira
Where is the filter located
Now let's figure out where Opel Zafira diesel cars are installed. In vehicles with a gasoline engine, the TF is located under the bottom of the car, on the same level as the rear passenger seat, not far from the gas tank.
As for diesel modifications, the element is located behind a plastic shelf in the engine compartment, opposite the driver’s seat. If you cannot find this element in your car yourself, read about it in the operating instructions or contact your dealer for help.
Replacing an element in an Opel Astra J
The change procedure differs in different versions of Astra J due to different installation locations.
Required Tools
To replace the filter in the Astra J turbo, you will need the following:
- new part;
- Phillips head screwdriver;
- cut bottle for draining fuel;
- rags
Algorithm of actions
The replacement procedure is performed as follows:
- Drive the vehicle into a garage with a pit or onto an overpass. The front wheels must be supported with bricks. The rear of the car is placed on a jack.
- Reach under the vehicle and locate the location where the filter device will be installed. Two pipes are connected to it. It is necessary to loosen the clamp securing the fuel device.
- It is necessary to place a container under the part in which the fuel will be collected.
- Disconnect the pipes connected to the filter device one by one. Some fuel will come out of them, prepare a rag.
- After draining the fuel, you can remove the filter element. A new filter is installed in place of the removed device. Connect the hoses and secure them securely. Tighten the clamp.
User Sergei Sobolevsky in his video clearly showed how to replace the fuel filter of an Opel Astra J under the bottom of the car.
Removing the Module
First you need to get to the fuel module. In the Opel Astra H it is located in the tank under the rear passenger seat. We dismantle the seat and take out the module itself, where the Opel Astra N fuel filter is located.
Be sure to check out:

For upgrading, you will need three fuel pipes for the fuel pump from a VAZ car and a brass tee with a pipe diameter of 10 mm.
Where is it located, price, originals, analogues, articles
Engineers recommend inspecting the TF every 45,000 km. If your car is systematically filled with low-quality fuel, the filter replacement life will be reduced by several thousand kilometers. Natural sediment forms at the bottom of the tank, clogging the fibers of the cleaner.
The filter has a non-separable design and cannot be prevented or repaired.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter on an Opel Astra
- unstable start of the power unit at different temperature conditions;
- increased fuel consumption;
- engine detonation at idle speed;
- acceleration is slower than usual;
- lumbago in the exhaust pipe;
- enriched or lean fuel mixture;
- The “Check Engine” light on the instrument panel is on.
Causes of filter clogging on Opel Astra (Opel Astra H)
- operating the vehicle for longer than the recommended period before undergoing a scheduled technical inspection;
- filling the tank with low-quality fuel, low-octane mixture for a long time;
- purchase of non-original consumables;
- the machine was left idle for a long time, in the “preservation” mode, as a result of which natural sediment formed in the circuit.
Fuel cell diagnostics on an Opel Astra
- Stop the engine and open the hood.
- Inspect the fuel circuit for damage.
- Check the serviceability of the fuse (No. 14) of the mounting block, it is located under the dashboard, to the left of the steering wheel;
- Check the tightness of the fuel supply line and make sure there are no fuel leaks.
If there are no comments on the integrity of the circuit, then proceed to replacing the TF.
Fuel filter in a 1.3 l diesel engine
1. The fuel filter is located on the partition in the engine compartment of the car, near the brake master cylinder reservoir.
2. Before starting work, stock up on old rags or newspapers and a container into which you can drain the remaining diesel fuel.
3. Open the hood and see the filter itself.
4. Use a screwdriver to pry up the locking tab...
... and disconnect the electrical connector of the fuel filter sensor.
5. Place a well-absorbing rag around the fuel filter housing, which will collect further spilled diesel fuel.
6. Using a suitable tool, for example, small pliers, press on the locking tabs of the fitting and at the same time pull to the side, ...
...disconnect the upper fuel line from the fuel filter housing cover.
Note: - When disconnecting the fuel line, fuel will leak out, be careful
— Be careful not to allow particles of dust or dirt to get into the disconnected fuel line. If necessary, plug the fuel line with a plug of the appropriate size.
7. Using your fingers or any other suitable tool on the plastic stops, unscrew the ring nut of the fuel filter housing cover.
8. Remove this nut.
Consequences of untimely replacement
Failure to promptly change the filter device in the Opel Astra will lead to difficulties starting the power unit. If the pollution is critical, then it will not be possible to start the vehicle engine.
If the engine still starts, the following symptoms may appear:
- the power unit of the car is difficult to start, and after starting, the engine operates noisily and unevenly until it begins to warm up;
- jerking may occur during movement;
- when the driver presses the gas pedal, dips are felt, the car does not gain momentum;
- when driving uphill, the engine power is insufficient, the car takes longer;
- The power unit as a whole operates unevenly, sometimes “troubling”.
Replacing the fuel filter on an Opel Astra
Required materials and tools:
- new filter: for gasoline or diesel engines;
- rags;
- flat head screwdriver;
- TORX key to “8”;
- pliers.
Step-by-step guide to replacing the TF with your own hands on an Opel Astra H:
- We place the vehicle above the inspection hole.
- We remove fuse No. 14 from the mounting block.
- We start the engine, the unit runs until it stalls.
- We insert the fuse into its original place again.
- For a “diesel”: from the engine compartment side, unclip the fastenings of the pipes to the TF.
- We remove the TF and install a new one.
- We put on the clamp and fuel supply pipes.
- For a gasoline engine: inside the car, in the back row, unclip the sofa seat.
- We remove the sound insulation layer.
- Unscrew the diagnostic window.
- Remove the fuel pump assembly.
- Let's disassemble the module into its component elements. Replace the fine filter with a new one.
- We assemble the parts in reverse order.
Do-it-yourself fuel filter replacement is complete. Subsequent diagnostics after 40 - 45 thousand km.
The fuel purifier is subject to unscheduled diagnostics if the vehicle has been in storage mode for more than two years.
Disassembly and modification
We pick up the module itself and carefully open it. We see inside the fuel pump, connected by a tube to the fuel filter, and a pressure regulator is attached to it. The second tube goes into the fuel line.
- We dismantle the tube connecting the filter to the pump.
- We disconnect the second tube from the module cover and install the plug.
- We take the purchased pipes and brass tee and assemble everything. Let's first boil the water, since we will heat the ends of the tubes in it, making them elastic. We do not recommend heating plastic tubes with an open fire, as they delaminate. We pull all three tubes onto the tee, the design is in the form of the letter “T”.
- We connect the module cover and the fuel pump with our tube.
- We connect the remaining part of the tee to the filter, to the pump and the main fuel line. As shown in the video.
- We carefully assemble the entire module and be very careful not to twist or pinch the tubes. And install it in the tank.
The last step in replacing the Opel Astra N fuel filter is to go to the engine compartment.
- Select a free place where the fuel filter will be located in our Opel Astra N.
- Secure the filter to the housing so that it does not dangle.
- Connect the fuel line going to the engine to it and return it from the filter to the heart of our Opel Astra H. It is strongly recommended to crimp all joints with clamps.
You can also install a pressure sensor through a tee as shown in the video. You just need to install a tee in front of the fuel filter and install a fuel pressure sensor.
You need to start modification only if you have experience with similar work. For beginners, we recommend that you avoid the tempting method of fuel purification, since all responsibility falls solely on the owner of the car.
Replacing the Opel Astra N fuel filter, which is installed additionally, is quite convenient.
Replacing a TF with a fuel pump in an Opel Astra H
You can change the fuel system filtration element in Astra H gasoline yourself. It will not be possible to find the mesh separately for sale, so we will analyze the procedure for replacing the pumping device.
You can learn about replacing the fuel filter from a video made by user Vladislav Dmitriev.
Preparation
What you will need to complete the task:
- new fuel pump with filter device;
- WD-40 product;
- flat head screwdriver;
- rag;
- sealed glue;
- hammer.
Stages of work
How to change the pumping device:
- Open the fuse box cover and locate the device that controls the fuel pump. Remove the fuse from the socket.
- Start the engine, it should stall after some time. This indicates a release of pressure in the fuel system.
- Remove the rear seat in your car. Unscrew the bolts that secure it.
- Once removed, you will see the fuel pump cover under the seat. Clean it from dust and use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws that secure it.
- To remove the pump, it is necessary to knock off the retaining ring attached to the cover. Spray the surface of the hatch with WD-40 and wait a few minutes. Using a hammer and screwdriver, knock out the ring with gentle blows counterclockwise.
- The power connector is connected to the pumping device; it must be disconnected. Prepare a rag, as some of the gasoline will come out when removed.
- Remove the gasoline pump from its seat; it is advisable to remember the position of the device so as not to confuse it during installation. Disconnect the four latches and remove the assembly.
- Install the new fuel pump into its seat. When installing, apply sealing glue to the retaining ring. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
The video from user Alex Drop demonstrates the procedure for changing the Opel Astra filter.
Replacing the TF with an Opel Astra with a diesel engine
According to the manufacturer, replacing this element in Opel Astra H and J cars with diesel engines is carried out according to the same principle. Therefore, let’s consider the change process using the example of an Opel Astra N diesel car.
What will you need?
- star screwdriver;
- new filter;
- two rubber gaskets (usually included with the filter component; if they are missing, you need to purchase them in addition).
Replacement process
- Open the hood and remove the battery terminal (so that errors do not appear on the instrument panel in the future).
- We dismantle the sensor of our TF, and then unscrew the screw securing the element.
Mounting the TF on a diesel Opel - You need to lift the lid a little, at the same time turning its bottom side towards you (see photo). This is done so as not to remove the fuel hoses.
TF cover in diesel Opel - Then the lid needs to be lowered down a little, where it will be fixed by the TF housing.
- We dismantle our TF, which is installed on the central rod.
- If the element body is very dirty, then it is advisable to clean it, otherwise the life of the new TF may be reduced. It is important not to lose the element's thrust spring.
- Then we take the rubber gaskets and lubricate them with fuel, after which we put them in place of the old ones, which have already begun to crumble.
- We take a new element and install it on the central rod, after which we pour about 200 grams of diesel into it along the outer contour. Carefully! Diesel must not get into the pump or injectors.
Diesel filling in TF - We put everything back together in reverse order and make sure there are no leaks.

Filter design for Opel Astra J gasoline engine
Its only task is to clean gasoline from solid impurities. Of course, the quality of Russian gasoline for the most part leaves much to be desired, and, in addition to solid particles, it also contains various dissolved elements. But a device capable of separating them from gasoline has not yet been invented. This needs to be understood: if the actual octane number of the fuel does not correspond to the declared one, this situation cannot be corrected in any way.
The design of the fuel purification system on Opels with gasoline engines is quite simple. This unit is a metal (usually aluminum) cylinder in which two cellular elements are placed:
- coarse cleaning element (sometimes called preliminary);
- fine cleaning (or finishing).
Entering this unit, gasoline first passes through a pre-filter, which is a fine steel mesh - it retains only relatively large particles of contaminants. After this comes the finishing stage. It is carried out using high-quality 10-micron paper, on which very small contaminants are deposited.
