How to disassemble the key fob and replace the battery
Remote controls for Ford Focus 3 come in two versions:
- with retractable key shank;
- with a fixed key shaft.
Therefore, let's see how to replace the battery in the Ford Focus 3 key fob for two cases.
Remote control with retractable key
In this example, the battery is located immediately under the key fob cover, and there is no need to disassemble the key, just remove the cover.
Remove the key from the niche by moving it to the working position by pressing the lock button.
Using the flat blade of a screwdriver, press the lid clamp to release it.
Next, use a tool to pry the cover that has come away from the groove and remove it.
Turn the remote control upside down and remove the battery.

With this option, it is necessary to disassemble the key fob body into two halves to gain access to the battery.
Press the 2 buttons on the edges of the case to release the latches. Pry the lid with a thin knife blade and separate it from the body. Remove the key from the niche.
Insert the screwdriver with a flat blade into the key slot and, turning around its axis, separate the upper and lower parts at this point.
Use a screwdriver or knife to widen the gap around the perimeter of the key fob, disengaging the latches. Separate the two halves of the key fob.
Use a screwdriver to remove the battery from the socket. There are housing designs with an internal lid covering the battery. It should be removed using a thin knife blade.
Replace the battery with a new one. Reassemble the housing in reverse order. Press the lid and both halves to secure the latches.
Make sure the remote control is working.

How to replace the battery in a Ford Focus 2 switch key
Using a flat-head screwdriver, carefully separate the key into 2 parts as shown in the photo.

Now let's move on to replacing the battery in the key. As noted above, these devices come in two types - a key fob with a flip key and a chip key. Let's consider both options.
Required Tools
- A folding knife with a very narrow blade (as an option - a small flat-head screwdriver with the narrowest blade).
- Unused plastic bank card.
- Brand new CR2032 battery.
Switchblade key
We throw away the mechanical key. At the side end of the key fob body, under its (key) seat, we find a hole.
We insert a small screwdriver into it and twist it counterclockwise until a wide gap forms between the two halves of the key fob. This is about three turns of a screwdriver.
After this, the keychain is easily separated into 2 parts.
We also disassemble the part with the buttons and logo into 2 halves, like a nut, using a suitable plastic object or, in extreme cases, the same screwdriver or knife.
In the cover of the key fob we see a compartment with a CR2032 battery installed in it. Please note that the element is inserted minus side up.
We pry the battery with the tip of a knife and remove it. We install a new one in its place, observing the polarity, and push it in until it clicks. We close, snap the cover of the electronic part and install the unit with the mechanical switch key in place.
Important! When replacing the battery, make sure not to damage or lose the spring contact petals connecting the plus batteries to the electronic board.
Flip key repair
The Ford Focus 3 ignition switch has one disease known to many car owners. Sometimes it starts to jam during ejection. If you try to help the key with force, you can lead to the fact that the device stops functioning normally and is thrown out altogether. An analysis of reviews from car owners and repairmen shows that most owners of the third generation Ford Focus face a problem. And, in addition, in most cases the cause is a small metal fragment that gets into the mechanism. Chip key
Now let's try to change the battery in the chip key. Here the disassembly algorithm is almost the same, but the lock is located in a different place and has a different design. To work, we need a screwdriver with a thin blade. On the back wall of the key we find a recess, marked in the photo below with an arrow.
We insert the tool into this recess and press lightly to open the lock. Without releasing the pressure, we separate the device in two. Here, of course, you will need a third hand, which, most likely, will have to use your teeth.
Healthy! The photo clearly shows what the use of metal objects and the absence of a third hand leads to. The author of the photo clearly tried to simultaneously press the lock and separate the parts of the key using a knife. The result is a spoiled appearance.
Using the same tool, we disassemble the housing of the electronic unit like a nut. We see a battery on the cover. Please note that it is installed with the plus side facing up and is secured with a plastic latch. The latch in the photo below is marked with an arrow.
We release the latch, remove the old battery and replace it with a new one, observing the polarity. Press the battery until it clicks and collect the chip key. As in the previous case, we make sure not to damage or bend the spring conductive contacts. In this version of the key fob there are two of them - positive and negative.
