Ford Focus 2 has gained wide popularity not only in the Russian market, but also in European countries, the USA, China, and India. Car enthusiasts are happy to buy sedans, hatchbacks, and station wagons from Ford because of their reliability, ease of repair and comfortable suspension. However, with a mileage of more than 100,000 kilometers, the following malfunction often occurs: the trunk of a Ford Focus 2 does not open. The problem appears unexpectedly and is noticed on both restyled and pre-restyled models.

Brief description of the model

Ford introduced the new second-generation Focus in 2004 in Paris. Assembly started at the main factories in Germany, Spain, and from the beginning of 2005 in Russia. The basis for the new generation was the C1 platform, on which the famous Mazda 3 and Volvo S40/V50 cars were also assembled.

Thanks to the new base, Ford engineers managed to create a modern sedan with optimal suspension settings. The chassis performed well on asphalt and dirt roads, and the response to the steering wheel satisfied even the most demanding drivers. The second generation exceeded the first in length and width. The wheelbase was increased by 25 millimeters; even 17-inch wheels easily fit into the arches.

Body types were offered to choose from: 3 or 5-door hatchback, station wagon, sedan. Power plants with variable valve timing of 1.4 volume; 1.6; 1.8 and 2.0 liters. The transmission was divided into a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual.

The most common versions on the road are those with a 1.6-liter unit paired with an automatic transmission in sedan and 5-door hatchback bodies.

The car is characterized by a decent reserve of power and reliability, but sooner or later the owners are faced with a popular problem: the trunk lid of the Ford Focus 2 does not open. Let's look at the main reasons.

Ford Focus 2 is a well-deserved bestseller on the Russian market. And not only. The car is in demand all over the world. And this despite his advanced age.

The model brings minimal hassle to the owner. There are not many congenital problems.

Yes, the lock jams and the wiring frays. But the problem can be solved relatively easily and quickly. You won't have to pay large sums for repairs. The work can be done with your own hands.

Trunk won't open

If the Focus stops responding to the fifth door open button, then the reason may be several main factors:

  • The cable loop leading from the passenger compartment to the trunk has become frayed.
  • Water got inside the opening button, causing rust to form on the contacts.
  • The protective fuse has blown.

If the trunk of a Ford Focus 2 sedan does not open, then the problem is most often in the connecting cable, which comes out of the passenger compartment and is responsible for the license plate illumination, the central locking on the trunk lid and the key itself that activates the lock. This problem is quite common in regions with cold climates. The reason lies in low-quality wires, which become “plastic” at low temperatures and break during bending when opening or closing the trunk.

If the trunk of a Ford Focus 2 hatchback does not open, in this case the reason is most often the penetration of moisture into the body of the key, which is responsible for opening the fifth door. Water dries over time and leaves a rust coating on the working surfaces of the contacts.

If the cable is not broken and the key is dry inside, then the cause may be a blown fuse. If the trunk of a Ford Focus 2 does not open and the license plate light on the trunk lid does not light up, this is a sign that there is no power as a result of a blown fuse.

Electrical cause of trunk lock failure

In those configurations of the second Focus that do not provide for manual opening of the lock, it opens using a servo drive. Failures occur most often due to wiring faults. The designers laid the wiring harness into the trunk lid so that when the lid is open, the wires are slightly stretched. Naturally, this cannot continue indefinitely, and at one point they simply grind together. Then the lock does not respond to the unlock button, the servo is silent.

We try to close and check the integrity of the wiring harness.

If we are dealing with just such a case, then it makes sense to try to move the corrugated hose in which the wiring harness is laid, while simultaneously pressing the release button. The harness is located in the upper left corner of the trunk lid, and can be reached through the gap between the body and the trunk lid. If this option does not work, then you will have to remove the back of the rear seat as described above and get into the trunk from the inside.

After unloading the trunk, we will remove the trim. It is attached to 13 pistons, but after removing the fasteners, the casing will remain hanging on the lock latch. We lift the casing and get to the lock and unscrew the fastening screws with a powerful screwdriver. After this, you can open the trunk, the lock will remain in the latch. How to open the trunk yourself

Unfortunately, Ford has not provided an emergency cable or hatch to open the trunk lid in the event of a malfunction.

  1. If the car comes with a flip key with trunk opening keys, then the first thing you need to do is try to open it using the remote key. This method helps in about 60 percent of cases. The fact is that two different wires are responsible for the electrical signal to the lock: from the radio channel and directly from the lock key. If the wire responsible for the button on the trunk is broken, then the key fob will cope with opening the fifth door.
  2. The next step is to check the fuse in the cabin. To do this, open the car’s operating instructions and find out the number of the fuse link, which is responsible for powering the trunk lock. The fuse box is located under the glove box and is held in place by two latches.
  3. If the radio channel and the fuse do not help, then you need to recline the rear row of seats and look into the luggage compartment. On the driver's side, a thick plume comes out of the cabin, which you need to actively move, and then try to open the fifth door again. You can invite a friend who will press the button while trying to move the train. This method often helps if broken wires come into contact and a signal passes through them.
  4. The last and most difficult option is to remove the trim from the inside of the fifth door and unscrew the bolts that hold the saber with the key. The removed saber will allow you to access the button for cleaning from water and rust.

If the trunk of the Ford Focus 2 does not open after all the manipulations, you will have to go to an authorized service center to fix the problem.

Methods for opening the trunk of a Ford Focus 1

Check first to see if the locked trunk is related to problems with the alarm. If the reason is not here, we proceed to dismantling the rear row of seats and entering the locked trunk from the inside.

    We remove the Ford Focus 1 trim, which is held on by pistons.

We remove the lock from the fastenings and the trunk is open.

Try opening the casing in which all the wires are hidden. Ford designers laid the wires in the corrugation between the trunk lid and the body so that when opened, the wires are slightly stretched, which leads to their abrasion and breakage.

  • Restoring the integrity of the wire ensures the functionality of the locking mechanism.
  • You can open the trunk of a Ford Focus in a hatchback body from the inside using a similar principle, but you will have to remove the liners before finally dismantling the lock.

    If the rear seats in your car do not fold down, you can use the following method:

  • Remove the child seat cover located in the center of the rear panel, as shown in the photo.
  • Place a metal pin at least 40 cm long inside.
  • Find the latch that allows the rear seat to simply recline.
  • Pull the opening mechanism and unlock the fifth door.

How to fix the problem yourself

If one of the listed methods helped open the trunk, then the cause of the breakdown will immediately become clear. If moving the wires helps, the cable is broken; if the fuse helps, the problem is the button is closed.

If a wire from a cable breaks, the following operations must be performed:

  • move the boot;
  • replace damaged wires with new ones, preferably large cross-section with a soft sheath;
  • return the boot to its place.

If replacing the fuse helped, then you must definitely find out the cause of the short circuit; it can be hidden in the button or also in the cable.

Important! If you manage to open the trunk door, you cannot close it until the problem is fixed.

Troubleshooting

When you have tried all the methods for opening the trunk from the outside, and nothing has helped, you should try to get to the lid from the inside. This work can be successfully completed by teenagers if they are properly guided and all actions are monitored. Fortunately, the volume and dimensions of the trunk of the second generation Focus will make it easy to carry out these events.

First you need to unlock the rear left door of your Focus II, then recline the 2-seater seat and fold the backrest. Before entering the trunk, you need to take with you a T25 key with a wrench, a socket wrench and a long screwdriver. First you need to remove the button and move the trim away from the body element, but you won’t be able to do this entirely with the lid closed.

The trim is secured to a metal base using latches and a series of bolts, two of which are located in the upper corners of the decorative element, and the other two are located in the handle on the trim.

To remove the bolts, use a T25 wrench with a wrench. Carefully disconnect the decorative element from the trunk door using a screwdriver, first unfastening the upper hooks and gradually going down. Behind the upholstery you will see a wire lever that allows you to open the mechanism - it is located in a vertical position behind the electric windshield wiper.

To unlock the structure, all you have to do is press the lever from top to bottom and push the lid away - for this you can use the wooden handle of a hammer or simply push with your hand. After opening the door, continue removing the trim and check the lock to determine the problem.

Car owners note that the car is reliable and can travel more than 300,000 kilometers without problems. The engine does not require special attention other than timely maintenance. The suspension does not fail until the 100,000 kilometer mark, the body does not rot.

Among the minuses, it is worth noting the low ground clearance and plastic mud flaps, which break off when driving over uneven surfaces.

Judging by the comments of customers, in the new Ford Focus 2 restyling models the trunk does not open much less often. The manufacturer takes care of consumers and changes the composition of the sheath for moving wiring. All bugs related to key flooding have also been fixed.

For station wagon owners

There is a simple but effective way to open a jammed trunk. But this option is suitable only for owners of the 2nd generation Ford Focus station wagon.

  • insert the awl into the protective casing of the lock in the right corner from the end side;
  • pierce the plastic;
  • push the awl as deep as possible;
  • turn the awl handle to the right;
  • wait for the desired sound of the lock opening.

As already mentioned, there may be several reasons for the malfunction. Diagnostics should begin with the simplest and most common option - wiring. The wires supplying the lock drive often fray and break off. To check it is necessary to open the corrugation in which the wires are stretched. First, we evaluate those that are in the salon. After which, the same actions are performed in the cabin. If there is no visible damage, you need to ring the chain. It is possible that the wire broke without any visible damage.

Troubleshooting this problem is quite simple. It is necessary to select a suitable wire cross-section and replace the damaged one. Try to choose a braid that matches the color. This will make life much easier if you need to re-repair. Do not try to insulate a wire with damaged braiding. Only replacement of the damaged area.

Assembly is carried out in reverse order. On hatchbacks this operation is slightly different; to remove the button you will have to remove the earbuds first.
