Do-it-yourself oil change in a Peugeot 308 engine

Motor oil in any car ensures normal engine operation under various loads and operation at high speeds for a long time. A lot depends on what kind of lubricant is poured. It reduces friction between sliding surfaces and provides micro-sealing between piston rings and cylinders. Therefore, changing the oil in the Peugeot 308 engine is a very important component when caring for the car.

This allows the engine not only to reveal its operating potential, but also to prevent premature failure of its individual components. In addition to its lubricating function, oil also has a cooling effect for parts that tend to get very hot.

Peugeot oil pressure sensor

Located on the oil filter housing, and on some types of this engine it is installed in the cylinder head, next to the engine temperature sensor, it, like everything else, fails, which is indicated to us on the dashboard by the oil nipple indicator lighting up, but with such a malfunction that can happen It’s better not to use the car on the road, what if it’s not the sensor that’s broken, but, for example, the earbuds have turned, God forbid.

When the malfunction indicator lights up on the dashboard while on the road, you can only check the oil level in the engine, see if it is leaking under the car, and if there are no visible leaks and the level is normal, then it is better to call a tow truck, so to speak, to play it safe, because on the spot you can’t determine what kind of trouble happened to our Peugeot’s engine.

Getting ready for replacement

The manufacturer's recommendations state that it is necessary to replace the lubricant in the Peugeot 308 after a year of operation of the car or at the turn of 20,000 km. However, these periods are halved taking into account operating conditions: poor condition of the road surface, mountainous terrain, sandy and dusty areas, as well as driving with frequent braking, for example, in traffic jams.

Peugeot 308 engines have a certain peculiarity - when they reach a mileage of 50,000 km, they consume oil. The amount of petroleum product consumed during operation is determined at 500 ml per 1000 km of distance traveled.

Oil pressure regulating valve

After checking the sensor, you can begin checking the valve.

Recently, there have been increasing cases of malfunctions with Peugeot cars with oil pressure control valves, which are installed in the oil pump in the engine crankcase. Error occurs:

  • STOP sign lights up on the instrument panel.
  • check engine light comes on
  • The car goes into emergency mode
  • The display shows an oil pressure fault.

The first malfunction associated with it is oil leakage through the wire that goes to the engine computer. If such a leak exists on your car, you must remove all the connectors on the computer and see if there are any traces of oil in the connectors. Next, you need to check the connector at the pressure valve itself under the car, remove the connector and wash it with brake cleaner, clear it of oil; if the pressure error does not go away, then the valve should be replaced.

What kind of oil should I use?

Among the features of any engine, certain oils must be poured into it. For the Peugeot 308, the manufacturer indicated in the service book which lubricant he recommends - these are products.

Depending on the climate and severity of operating conditions, you can pour motor oil from the list listed:

  • Total Quartz Energy SAE 0W-30 viscosity;
  • Total Quartz 9000 SAE 5W-40;
  • Total Quartz Ineo SAE 5W-30.

Of course, this list does not limit your choice; you can pour other motor oil from different manufacturers with the appropriate characteristics. According to the information specified in the service book, it is necessary to adhere to a quality level not lower than API - SJ, SL, ACEA - A3/B4, ILSAC - GF-3 and viscosity class according to SAE - 0W-30 and 5W-30.

Also, by contacting your brand dealer, you can choose an alternative product that may be suitable for your Peugeot 308.

What to do if the oil pressure error light comes on?

Come to the service center and first of all, diagnose the engine for missing pressure. Such an error in engine operation will be recorded in the engine computer and stored there.

There have been cases where there was a faulty sensor on the display, then an error appeared and then disappeared, they brought such a car to us once, the owner of the car complained that his oil can was on fire, they started the car, everything was fine, they checked the connector, it was covered in oil, the sensor was faulty and leaks, we ran computer diagnostics, errors about critically low oil pressure in the system persisted, we replaced the filter and sensor, and off we went. When checking errors with a computer, you can also see the error log, when the first and subsequent ones occurred.

Peugeot 308: Business card

When changing the oil in the engine, the massive steel sheet will have to be removed, otherwise you won’t be able to get to the drain plug - it’s right between the slots in the protection. You can cut off one of the lintels, thereby expanding the window, but first weigh whether it’s worth it. No matter how hard you try, when replacing the filter, part of the waste will still end up on the steel sheet.

If you do remove the protection, do not rush to put it back in place; at the same time, check the oil in the box. Alas, neither the manual transmission nor the automatic transmission has a control plug or dipstick. If, say, oil is leaking through the seals, how much should I add? Therefore, we do this: unscrew the drain plug in the manual transmission and release all the waste to the drop. We wrap the cork. Through another hole (it’s on top of the crankcase) we fill in exactly 2 liters of fresh oil. Now the level will be normal. According to the regulations, the oil is “lifetime”, but dealers recommend changing it every 100 thousand km. The same with automatic transmission. If the unit regularly overheats during sudden starts or slipping on a bad road, it is better to change the oil.

Peugeot dealers drain the automatic transmission waste by unscrewing only the lower plug (with the engine not running). Then pour 2 liters through the top hole (we’ll tell you how to get to it later) and start the engine. Having moved the selector through all positions with a two-second delay in each, leave the lever in position P and, without turning off the engine, unscrew the drain plug again. Excess oil will flow out and the level will return to normal.

Leaks and problems

The higher the mileage of the Peugeot 308, the more problems appear, as in principle with any car. Most often this is due to natural wear and tear of the engine, causing oil to burn. Although the manufacturer allows for consumption and directly writes about this in the instructions.

In communities about this car you can find information that engines are very sensitive to bad oil. And if you fill it with a high-quality product, then the problem of obesity is not so acute.

In general, EP6 engines structurally suffer from increased oil consumption and a consumption of 200-300 grams per thousand is considered the norm. But if oil consumption has increased significantly, then it is worth trying to decarbonize. You can also try flushing the oil system with special chemicals. If these methods do not help, then you should think about repairs.

For reference, the distance on the dipstick between the MIN and MAX marks holds 1-1.2 liters of oil, regardless of the size of the installed engine.

All this is general information, which may manifest itself differently on each specific vehicle, since everyone’s operating modes are different. The same applies to leak locations; it is impossible to identify the cause from a distance.

ACCESS IS LIMITED

While the protection is removed, replace the coolant. There is no faucet on the radiator, so we remove the lower pipe and, trying not to get wet, catch the flow into a wide container. To drain residues from the pump, there is a special plug on one of the pipes. It’s just not easy to get close to it - it’s very cramped. Because of this, it is rarely removed, and, believe me, nothing bad happens.

After filling in with fresh fluid, remove air from the system. It has two fittings: in the upper heater pipe (at the front panel) and on top of the thermostat (see photo).

How to change oil on Peugeot 308, 408, 3008, how much to fill, video

Home » 308, 408, 3008 Repair » How to change the oil on a Peugeot 308, 408, 3008, how much to fill, video

An oil change in Peugeot 308, 408 and 3008 with an EP6 engine is carried out once a year or after a mileage of 20,000 km, but it can be done more often, it won’t hurt, most importantly, no less often. Tools needed to change the oil:

  1. Head 27, extension and wrench
  2. Slotted screwdriver
  3. Hexagon 8mm

We warm up the car a little, but not too much, otherwise you can get burned, and so that the oil becomes more liquid and fluid. We unscrew the clamp on the air pipe resonator with a screwdriver and remove it; it is removed by pressing the latches, first the upper one, then the lower one. We move the pipe a little to the side, it will not interfere with us and there is no need to remove it.

Now we place a rag under the oil filter housing and unscrew the cap a little with a 27mm head. Let the oil drain from the housing into the pan. After 2-3 minutes, remove the cover completely and remove the filter insert “cassette filter”, remove it with a little effort and change the rubber band that comes with the filter. We tighten everything and assemble it in the reverse order.

We drain all the oil from the pan by unscrewing the plug with a hexagon, which is located there. Be sure to install a new copper sealing ring on the plug, since the oil is very liquid. Recommended oil for 308, 408, 3008 and 308 turbo Total 0w30 with EP6 engine.

You probably have a question: how much oil to fill in Peugeot? As a rule, you need to fill 4.3 liters, but it is preferable to carefully fill 4 liters and add while looking at the oil dipstick to the upper mark. After all that has been done, start the engine for about 5-10 seconds to fill the filter element.

And finally, you can reset the maintenance counter (it is shown as a key) on the dashboard so as not to miss the next replacement. This is done easily, turn off the ignition, press and hold the reset button on the device, turn on the ignition without releasing it and see the countdown from 9 to 0, wait until zero and release the button, the entire counter is reset. Checking the engine oil.

But in this video you can see what will happen to the engine if you don’t change the oil or top it up.

Any car needs good care and periodic maintenance. The frequency of maintenance is prescribed by the car manufacturer in the operating manual. Maintenance includes a variety of actions that allow you to determine the condition of the machine and eliminate faults. Changing the oil in a Peugeot engine also applies to these actions.

Automotive oil allows a car engine to function normally under various loads and operate for a long time at high speeds. Lubrication reduces friction of contacting parts and provides micro-sealing of pistons and cylinder block. In view of this, every driver must be responsible when changing the oil in the Peugeot 308 engine.

This will enable the Peugeot 308 power unit to operate at full capacity and will extend its operational period. In addition to lubrication, car oil also provides cooling for extremely hot parts.

Preparation for the procedure

The oil fluid on a Peugeot 308 needs to be changed either after a year of using the car, or every twenty thousand kilometers. Typically, these periods are halved due to operating conditions: bad roads, mountainous terrain, dust, driving with frequent stops.

In Peugeot 206, Peugeot 307, Peugeot 308, the automaker advises pouring products that are fairly well-known. Petroleum products from this manufacturer are distinguished by high performance indicators and do not require frequent replacement. Depending on climatic conditions, you can choose one of the following lubricants to fill your car:

  • "Total Quartz Energy" 0w Can be used at temperatures from minus thirty-five to plus twenty-five degrees;
  • “Total Quartz 9000” 5w Can be poured at temperatures from minus thirty to plus thirty-five degrees;
  • "Total Quartz Ineo" 5w Can be used at temperatures from minus thirty to plus twenty-five degrees.

To determine the amount of oil in a Peugeot, you need to use a special dipstick. The lubricant level should be between the lower and upper marks. Typically, three and a half liters of motor oil is enough for the engine.

Changing Peugeot oil with your own hands will not be difficult even for an inexperienced car enthusiast. Of course, if you doubt your own abilities or don’t want to get dirty, there is always the opportunity to contact a car service. However, if you do everything yourself, you can save a lot.

You will need

  • — wrenches;
  • - engine oil;
  • - container for collecting oil.

Instructions

Change the oil on Peugeot engines at least once every 6 months. At the same time, it is advisable to change the filter, but, in any case, do this at least once a year. Immediately before replacement, warm up the engine to operating temperature and place the car on an inspection pit or overpass. If they are missing, hang the front wheels by jacking up the Peugeot and placing special stands under the suspension arms.

Turn off the car and apply the handbrake. Be sure to play it safe by placing stands under the car's wheels. When lifting the vehicle with a jack, do not rest it on the oil pan, the transmission, the auxiliary frame (subframe), or the rear axle.

Remove the shield protecting the engine crankcase. To do this, approach the car from below and unscrew the bolts securing it. Place a prepared container under the drain plug to collect used oil. Unscrew the drain plug located on the engine oil pan and wait until the old oil has completely drained into the container.

To speed up the process, open the filler cap or remove the dipstick. Please note that used oil can be hot and may cause burns if it comes into direct contact. When disposing of it, comply with environmental regulations.

After draining is complete, thoroughly clean the drain plug and nipple and inspect the O-ring. If it is damaged, replace it. Tighten the drain plug with a torque of 30 Nm. Analyze the condition of the drained oil.

To do this, dip your thumb and index finger into it, take it out and rub them against each other. If the presence of grains or metal particles is felt, then damage to the bearings has occurred. Drops of coolant (water or antifreeze) or yellowish tints indicate a depressurized head gasket.

A dark color indicates the need to urgently replace it, which is what you do. Open the filler cap if you have not already done so. Fill with new engine oil that meets the requirements of the operating instructions to the required level.

Monitor its level using a dipstick. Add new oil slowly, constantly monitoring the level as it takes time to drain into the crankcase. Close the oil filler cap and reinsert the dipstick.

Start the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes, then turn it off again. Wait about 5 more minutes for the lubricant to flow from the engine into the crankcase. Check its level with a dipstick. Considering that during engine operation it is evenly distributed throughout the power unit and fills the filter, its level will drop. Add engine oil to the required level.

First of all, it is worth considering that the fluid for automatic and manual transmissions is different from each other. Only special lubricant is suitable for the automatic transmission, which will help prevent its wear.

There are quite a large number of different lubricants and transmission fluids on the market. Most of them have the following properties:

  • Improved torque converter performance.
  • Heat removal.
  • Elimination of wear.
  • Lubrication of parts.

In total, there are 3 classes of different transmission fluids for AL4 automatic transmissions:

  • Mineral.
  • Semi-synthetic.
  • Synthetic.

Each of these classes has special chemical properties, additives and sets of additives. In turn, additives have their own special properties, which depend on:

  • combustion temperatures;
  • foamability;
  • oxidability;
  • compatibility with rubber parts.

In addition, the properties also depend on what kind of lubrication is required for the rubbing parts in the AL4 automatic transmission and the ability to maintain wear debris in a suspended state. Most experts agree that for this type of automatic transmission like the AL4 (installed in the Peugeot 308), ATF LT is most suitable 71141.

  1. Changing the fluid in an AL4 automatic transmission is quite simple. First of all, it is worth considering that before starting the replacement, the car must be preheated. To do this, you can drive several kilometers.
  2. The next step is to remove the protection from the bumper and crankcase. After this, you need to find a drain plug, which can be removed using a four-sided wrench.
  3. Removing the drain plug

  4. After unscrewing the plug, you need to place a container under the hole for used lubricant and drain the old lubricant and used liquid. After this, you need to unscrew the so-called internal plug and drain the remaining lubricant.
  5. Draining used engine oil

  6. In addition, when replacing the fluid in the AL4 automatic transmission, you need to replace the gaskets, since if the cap is tightly screwed on, they can wear out.
  7. After tightening the plug, you need to lift the hood, remove the air filter, turn off the positive on the battery and move the fuse box to the side. After this, you need to pull the battery cover towards you and remove it. On the battery, you need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, unscrew the bolts that secure the battery and remove it.
  8. Battery replacement

  9. Sometimes replacing an AL4 automatic transmission involves removing not only the battery, but also the platform. To do this, you need to unscrew the bolt that is located under the fender liner. After this, you need to check whether the drain plugs are tightened tightly and unscrew the oil filler pipe with a wrench. Oil must be poured into this tube. The liquid is poured through a funnel, after which the tube is twisted with a force of 3.1 N.
  10. Filling with new transmission oil

  11. After completing the replacement, you need to start the car and warm it up to 60 degrees. Next, switch all speeds in order and return to the original position “P”. It is recommended to reset the aging counter to zero after changing the lubricant. After this, you need to unscrew the drain plug again and wait until the lubricant drains, and screw it back again.
  12. In order to check the oil level in the 308 model, you need to fill half a liter of fluid, start the engine and wait until it warms up. It is worth considering that after warming up the radiator cooling fan should turn on. Now you need to unscrew the drain plug and drain the lubricant, but if it does not drain and just drips, then you should add another half liter of fluid and repeat the check.

OPTICAL ILLUSION

If the turn signal in the headlight fails, many owners wonder which bulb to change - internal or external? Be aware: the lamp is located outside, and in the internal prop section it is only reflected. It is easier to change headlight bulbs in the right headlight - there is better access there. However, it’s tolerable on the left side as well. The only serious inconvenience is that the cap for the low beam and headlight sections is not centered. Because of this, you will have to tinker with the spring clamp of the lamp.

Unlike other models (206, 407 and some others), the “308” does not have windows in the fender liners for access to the foglights. In fact, this is not a problem, since the bumper with the fender liner can be easily bent and the lamp can be removed through the resulting gap. But the lights need to be removed entirely. No tool is needed for this operation, but for some reason many owners are afraid of this procedure and drive around with burnt out light bulbs.
