High-quality winter tires chosen by the driver for use in central Russia are the key to a comfortable and safe ride, since the weather can have many surprises in store for motorists. Thus, temperatures at this time of year can reach both extreme values and be above zero, and the height of the snow cover in some areas reaches several tens of centimeters on the roads, not to mention the phenomenon of ice caused by a sharp temperature change. That is why drivers should choose products such as Nordman tires, made in Finland and which have been top of the ratings around the world for many years.

Nokian Nordman RS2

Winter tires, like the Nordman 5 7 SX2, were developed specifically for use in difficult conditions in the Arctic. The model is characterized by:

  • controllability and grip on icy and snowy surfaces with a complex of technological solutions and modern materials in manufacturing;
  • efficiency at low temperatures due to the rubber compound containing silica on a cryosilane basis;
  • reduced length of the braking distance due to lamellas in the shoulder blocks;
  • drying the road surface by sucking water into drop-shaped cavities;
  • increased resistance to slashplanning created by teeth on the side surfaces of the shoulder blocks;
  • improved grip properties on slippery winter surfaces, obtained by increasing the density of the lamellas.

Car owners claim that tires cannot handle slush and ice, especially deep snow. Poor braking and an uncertain start on ice are noted.

Briefly about the main thing

First of all, in view of the above, a reasonable question arises: can rubber, the development of which was carried out more than ten years ago, really be called modern?
As it turned out, quite, because many of the discoveries and conclusions made at that time are still used in the elite series from this manufacturer. First of all, the Finns tried to adapt their tires as much as possible for the harsh winter conditions that are so familiar to a large number of car enthusiasts. Therefore, to the question: “Where is Nokian Nordman 5 produced?” you can confidently answer: “In Russia, closer to real operating conditions.” It is designed for confident passage on any type of winter road surface, be it icy asphalt or slushy snow on the ground. And its strength should be enough to cope with collisions with various obstacles that may be encountered on the roads. Is this really so, the reviews that we will turn to at the end of the article will tell you.

Tires Nokian Hakapelita 8

In our country, this tire from a Finnish manufacturer is purchased by owners of off-road vehicles and crossovers. Pros:

  • excellent grip on snowy and icy surfaces, facilitated by an optimized V-shaped tread design with a symmetrical directional pattern;
  • increased directional stability and efficiency during braking and acceleration due to a wide central rib with triangular edges;
  • improved grip on icy surfaces thanks to a large number of multi-directional S-shaped sipes and the use of a tetrahedral stud.

Car owners consider Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 tires to be expensive and noisy, even humming on clean asphalt; they report loss of studs and uncertain braking on asphalt.

Advantages and disadvantages

Nokian Hakka Green 2

Hakka Green summer tires were created by Finnish tire makers using developments and technical solutions that have worked well on other types of tires. Pros:

  • significantly improved stability of adhesion performance at high speeds and reduced fuel consumption, made possible due to the low weight and increased rigidity of the belt;
  • counteraction to aquaplaning due to the transverse grooves in the shoulder areas of the feather shape, and the longitudinal ones have curved internal walls;
  • reduced level of noise and low-frequency vibrations, the generator of which is the steel cord, thanks to an additional layer in the tire sidewalls.

Nokian studs are one of the most effective in the world

The effectiveness of Nordman 7's grip on slippery roads is ensured by a unique stud. The Nokian company has supplied its rubber with several of its own developments, which have proven themselves well on more expensive models.

The tire stud has:

  • Anchor fastening. Holds the metal part firmly in the socket using an extended flange.
  • Air Claw technology. Near each stud in the rubber there are 3 small depressions through which air penetrates, creating an air cushion. Thanks to this, the stud is in soft contact with the road surface, creating less noise.

Since the impact of a large number of spikes on the road surface produces quite noticeable noise, the Nokian company used a special “Air Claw” technology to absorb it. Near each stud in the rubber there are 3 small depressions through which air penetrates, creating an air gap. First introduced in 2009, this technology works like the air cushion found in sports shoes and provides a soft contact with the surface. It not only reduces noise, but also preserves the road surface, which suffers from the effects of metal spikes.

  • Shock-absorbing cushion. Inside the tire, under each stud, there is a soft rubber insert. It helps to securely hold the part in the seat and ensure smooth operation during sudden maneuvers.
  • Bear claw technology. Keeps the spike in a vertical position, which allows you to start without slipping, brake faster and make it easier to control the car on ice and snow.

Studs on Nokian Nordman 7
The eight-row stud is symmetrically located on both sides of the central axis of the wheel. A carefully thought-out place for each stud allows you to reduce their number, which means reducing the noise and weight of the rubber without compromising grip.

The stud core has a hexagonal shape with a beveled front edge, which ensures smooth and tenacious contact with the coating.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV

The model is aimed at equipping powerful crossovers and SUVs. According to the manufacturer, these tires:

  • demonstrate the ease of overcoming icy areas, which is due to innovative studs, including several types of studs;
  • created on the basis of the Hakkapeliitta 7 model, thereby receiving all its best qualities;
  • create comfortable driving conditions due to the Eco Stud System, which suppresses noise and compensates for vibration;
  • have excellent control, the reason for which is an effective self-cleaning system and the presence of self-locking slats coupled with amplifiers of the braking effect.

From the point of view of vehicle owners, the Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV rubber exhibits rolliness on asphalt, floats in slush and has a very soft sidewall.

Structure of tread lamellas

It is worth noting that the first thing that catches your eye is the width of the lamellas on this tire model. They do look wider than on other options, and there are reasons for this.

This width is due to better maneuverability in snowy areas. All lamellas are located transversely to each other and have a wave-like shape. This creates a large number of edges, which has a positive effect when accelerating or braking on a snowy road.

However, all tread blocks are rigidly connected to each other. And they don’t start to “chatter” at high speeds or temperatures close to positive outside. Thanks to this, even when driving on clean, dry asphalt, the car remains stable and driving comfort is not reduced.

Rigidity is achieved thanks to the shape of each individual element of the tread pattern. The walls of the blocks, under load, interact with each other at their edges, creating a monolithic structure, while maintaining the dynamic characteristics of rubber.

Nokian Hakka Blue 2

The Finnish manufacturer of summer tires of this brand positions them as a commercially successful product that combines a relatively low price with sufficient performance and demonstrates:

  • optimal elasticity for a wide temperature range due to the new compound;
  • reduced tread heating with reduced wear and rolling resistance due to the addition of pine oil to the composition;
  • reduced specific pressure on the surface area, its uniform distribution, increased service life, improved handling and good grip due to increased belt stiffness and optimized tread profile.

Among the disadvantages of Hakka Blue 2 tires, car enthusiasts highlight increased wear.

Composition of a rubber compound based on cryosilane

The mixture for making Nokian Nordman 7 includes the following components:

  • natural rubber;
  • silica (silicon dioxide);
  • rapeseed oil;
  • chemical additives.

The basis for the unique tire mixture is cryosilane, which combines all the components and creates the ideal balance of elasticity, softness and strength of the material.

Cryosilane was invented by chemists at the Nokian plant. Thanks to its use, the manufacturer managed to make rubber more economical. Its composition demonstrates low rolling resistance, which means it saves fuel and reduces the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere

Reviews

Allows you to get off well on dense and heavily compacted snow and ice. Adhesion properties increase as the temperature decreases, but decrease as the temperature increases. They have average cross-country ability in snow. They handle poorly on wet asphalt, have poor directional stability and poor road holding in slush, and are completely uncontrollable on loose snow.

Oksana Egorova about summer tires Nokian Nordman SX2.

I bought these tires because the seller highly praised them. After a month of driving, the indicator showed 6 mm, and after another couple - 4 mm! These are tires for no more than one season, very soft, plus the appearance of a lateral hernia of the rear wheel. A complete disappointment, I don't recommend it.

Nokian Tires

is a Finnish company, a large manufacturer of tires for difficult climatic conditions. The company develops and produces passenger tires, tires for commercial and truck vehicles, as well as industrial tires for heavy equipment.

The key markets for the company are regions with difficult climatic conditions, which place increased demands on tires due to snowy winters, unstable temperatures, high amounts of precipitation, capricious and changeable weather.

The company's headquarters is located in Nokia, Finland.

Special shape of the spike

We have already dealt with the base of the tenon, which is a square plate. And with such a structure, one could well expect the same shape for the spike itself. Moreover, the originals from ten years ago had a tetrahedral one. Why was the decision now made to abandon such a concept?

The answer turned out to be much simpler than one might expect. One could debate for a long time which shape would be better suited for confident traction with the road and better bite into the ice, if not for one “but”. Whatever the material from which each stud is made, after rolling, regardless of the original shape, these elements still become round. This means that this can reduce the cost of production without bothering with giving certain shapes to the spikes from the factory.

In addition, elements with a four- or hexagonal shape, as tests have shown, wear out faster than round ones, since they resist more when driving on clean asphalt. So this concept in the Nokian Nordman 5 SUV also made it possible to extend the service life of the studs, which allows you to avoid spending extra money on re-studding.

Shingate [edit | edit code]

Nokian has officially admitted to manipulating tire test results for many years [6]. In 2016, the Finnish portal Kauppalehti published material [7] that caused a scandal in the tire industry. The publication has received reliable information that Nokian has been providing modified tires for tests by various magazines for several years so that they win the tests and thus increase the brand value and the value of the company's shares. According to the authors of the investigation, Nokian also studied the test results of competitors' tires and modified its test tires so that they showed better results.

According to Kauppalehti's sources, the company deliberately misled consumers. “When tires purchased from a regular store were tested, they could not win. The company could not afford such a risk,” said one of the publication’s interlocutors.

A report [8] that appeared on the Nokian website notes that in previous years, when the media received products directly from the manufacturer, “dubious” methods were indeed used in this area. At the same time, the company assured that the company has already prohibited the production or even development of tires intended solely for successfully passing tests. “We apologize and regret the mistakes we have made in the past,” said Nokian Tires CEO Ari Lehtoranta.

What is remarkable about this manufacturer?

By the way, this date is considered the official beginning of the history of winter “shoes” for cars. The famous Haka-Hakkapeliitta model, which first appeared on markets around the world in the mid-50s of the last century, also has Finnish roots. In addition, Nokian pioneered the use of steel wire for winter tire cord reinforcement in 1977.

And more about innovations. Back in 1991, it was the Finns who offered the world studless Nokian NRW tires. This year can safely be considered the time of creating Velcro. It is this winter tire that is currently officially approved for use in many European countries, while studs are prohibited there.

This is what Nokian tires are known for and even famous for... But the country that produces this rubber today is not only Finland.

Today the company has two large factories, each of which is striking in size and technology. We have already talked about the first of them. It is located in Finland. The second enterprise is located in the city of Vsevolozhsk, in the Leningrad region. It was officially launched back in 2005, and the plant has already been repeatedly recognized as one of the best in Europe. All production processes are fully automated; the company uses the most modern equipment.

Tests

The results of numerous tests of Nokian brand tires have confirmed their reliable handling, effective grip on the road surface, and also efficiency. At the same time, the car behaves confidently both on a snowy road and on open areas of asphalt covered with icy surfaces. The tested vehicles showed a smooth ride, fuel economy, and no significant noise while driving.

Resistance to aquaplaning is also excellent. The tires performed well when used in adverse conditions (rain, mud, ice). The wheels immediately respond to the steering wheel. There were no problems with driving the car.
