According to unofficial statistics, the Lada Priora (or VAZ-2107) is the most popular model in Russia produced by the AvtoVAZ plant. Modern Priora is equipped with both a manual transmission and a robotic one.
However, the vast majority of Priors driven on Russian roads today are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. In the article, we will consider which oil is best to choose for a Priora manual transmission, how often it needs to be changed, and we will also look at some of the nuances when selecting transmission lubricant.

What was tested? Tribological parameters. Characterize the protective properties of oil during contact in gears. Determined in accordance with GOST 9490-75 on a four-ball friction machine: three stationary steel balls at the bottom, one spins at a given speed at the top and a load presses on it. The structure is immersed in an oil bath in which the test oil splashes. And then the behavior of the balls and contact patches tells everything. For different types of transmission oils it is standardized by our GOST 17479.2-85 - there are generally accepted ways of interpreting the results of such tests. Of course, foreign manufacturers are not required to follow GOST, but we live in Russia, and therefore we can use the standards of this document to assess the quality of oil.
Viscosity. At operating temperatures, we evaluate the kinematic viscosity, and at low temperatures, the dynamic viscosity. Using kinematic viscosity at 40 and 100 °C, we calculate the viscosity index, which characterizes the degree of dependence of viscosity on temperature. The range of changes in this viscosity at 100 °C for the 75W‑90 class is quite wide - from 13.5 to 24 cSt. The higher the viscosity at operating temperature, the heavier the motor, generally speaking. The lower the dynamic viscosity at negative temperatures, the faster the box will warm up and the better the car will drive.
Pour point. Everything is simple here: the lower, the better. Flash point. Together with the pour point, it characterizes to a certain extent the stability and quality of the base oil. The higher it is, the better the base usually is, which means you can expect that the resource of such oil will be longer.
From my subjective experience, Mannol oil turned out to be the most fluid during freezing, BP was in second place, and Petro Canada turned out to have the worst fluidity. When frozen, the Motul X-max engine has good fluidity and mobility, zero is zero (0w40). Well, some photos during the oil change.

Changing the oil in the Priora gearbox (VAZ 2170, 2171, 2172)
The gearbox oil should be changed every 30,000-40,000 km - if you have a manual gearbox, and 50,000-60,000 km if you have an automatic transmission. In my case, the rear gear crunching was heard and the second gear began to work hard. The dipstick showed the oil level at a minimum, although it should be between the minimum and maximum stripes. If it is below the minimum, then you should think about changing it, otherwise the parts will wear out and crumble. Choice of oil? Which one should I fill? Let's see what the manufacturer advises us:
What you need for work: 1. Open-end wrench size 17 (socket wrench is most convenient). Price: 125 rubles (420 tenge) 2. Funnel and hose 1.0-1.5 m long (for filling oil). Price: 125 rubles (420 tenge) 3. Jack (or inspection hole/overpass). 4. Empty container for draining old oil (3-4 liters). 5. Gear oil 4 liters. Price: 1150 rub (3900 tenge)
Before draining the oil from the gearbox, you need to warm it up. You either need to drive for 15 minutes or drive 5-10 km. Then, within 15 minutes while the oil is hot, you need to drain it. Warming up the car on the spot will not help, you definitely need to drive it. Just in case, I put it in first gear and the handbrake. Jacked up the front wheel on the driver's side. I tightened the bolt with a 17mm wrench. I washed the bolt (so that I could insert a clean one later). I placed an empty container to drain the oil. The pressure was low and oil was poured into the protection. It’s most convenient, of course, to first remove the protection before draining the oil; I was too lazy to tighten a bunch of screws. I lowered the car from the jack and left it standing there for 30-40 minutes. Around the 20th minute, I took it off the program.
Then he jacked it up again and tightened the bolt. I wiped everything around the bolt that I was tightening with a dry rag in order to track any possible leaks, and poured oil through a hose with a funnel. After filling 3 liters, I began to periodically check the oil level with a dipstick. It took about 3.7-3.8 liters of oil. You need to fill in a little more than a strip at maximum so that the fifth gear does not dry out. I wiped the dirt off the dipstick with water and put it back in place. I got into the car and started turning the gears 3-5 times so that the oil would seep through everywhere normally. After this procedure, the box began to work softer and there were fewer sounds.

Which oil to choose for the Lada Priora box?
According to unofficial statistics, the Lada Priora (or VAZ-2107) is the most popular model in Russia produced by the AvtoVAZ plant. Modern Priora is equipped with both a manual transmission and a robotic one.
However, the vast majority of Priors driven on Russian roads today are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. In the article, we will consider which oil is best to choose for a Priora manual transmission, how often it needs to be changed, and we will also look at some of the nuances when selecting transmission lubricant.
What boxes are on Priora?
The Lada Priora car was produced for 11 years, from 2007 to 2022, during which time the gearbox was changed several times, and in recent years they even began to install a robot, that is, a robotic transmission. Here is a list of gearboxes that were installed on this car, as well as engines with which the boxes were mounted:
Gearbox model | Brief description of the transmission | Engine model and power (hp) |
VAZ 2170 | Old style rocker gearbox | 21114 (80), 21116 (87), 21126 (98) |
VAZ 2180 | New model rocker gearbox | 21127 (106) |
VAZ 2181 | Rosovaya | 21116 (87) |
VAZ 2182 | Robotic (AMT) | 21127 (106) |
The VAZ 2170 was inherited from the Lada Priora from the discontinued tenth family, so it is an ordinary tenth box with minor changes, so the unit retained all the shortcomings of the original device. By 2013, when it became clear that the manual gearbox (manual transmission) did not meet the expectations of prior drivers, AvtoVAZ engineers modernized it and assigned the new unit the number 2180. The engineers managed to reduce the noise of the unit and slightly increase its reliability, but the price for this was reduction of the maximum permissible torque.
Change of oil
In 2012, AvtoVAZ engineers developed a new transmission, which took into account previous mistakes, resulting in a unit that was devoid of most of the shortcomings of previous manual transmissions, especially lever rattling. Another reduction in the maximum torque did not become a problem, because by this time it was possible to establish the production of powerful high-speed small-volume engines, so they began to install this unit on some Priora models.
In 2014, based on the 2181 transmission, Russian and German engineers (ZF concern) developed a robotic unit, which, although it retained the mechanism of the original box, operated in automatic mode thanks to electric drives (actuators). Nevertheless, the unit turned out to be not very successful, although truly successful robotic gearboxes are extremely rare around the world. Therefore, since 2014, potential Priora buyers have had a relatively large selection of transmissions, but there was no full-fledged automatic transmission.
Recommended AvtoVAZ oil for Lada Priora
Not all car enthusiasts know, but the oil in manual transmissions also needs to be changed at a frequency clearly indicated by the manufacturer.
Of course, unlike automatic machines, where deviation from the scheduled replacement dates is fraught with the appearance of problems quite quickly, mechanics are more resistant to untimely renewal of the lubricant.
However, abuse of timing for changing transmission oil will at a minimum lead to a reduction in the service life of manual transmission parts, and in severely advanced cases can cause serious damage.
What kind of oil should be poured into the gearbox of a Lada Priora? Under factory assembly conditions, different oils were poured into the manual transmission at different times. The main criterion by which it was selected was the class according to technical conditions (or GOST).
For Priora, the manufacturer recommends using TM-4-12 class lubricant. This gear oil has successfully passed all tests in the factory laboratory and has been approved by the manufacturer as suitable for use in manual transmissions.
What to look for when choosing
The choice of lubricant for gearboxes is very important. There are several basic criteria that you need to rely on when purchasing:
- viscosity;
- manufacturer;
- chemical composition.
These are the three most important criteria for choosing transmission oil for the Lada Priora. We also draw your attention to the fact that when purchasing, you must check the packaging for compliance with GOST. It is desirable to have production certificates confirmed by independent government organizations. This will help you choose a truly high-quality lubricant and not get even more problems.
You should not save on buying oil, since the replacement process is already aimed at this. A high-quality product can double the normal operation of a car. Thus, you will no longer need major repairs at least for the duration of the new gear oil. And repairing any gearbox will cost many times more at absolutely any car service center.
The amount of oil in the Priora box
According to the factory standard, 3.5 liters of gear oil are poured into the Lada Priora gearbox. To replace, you will need 3.2-3.5 liters, depending on how much can be drained and what losses occurred during the operation of the car.
It is worth mentioning one well-known opinion that can often be heard from Prior owners. The fact is that gear oil is mainly supplied in four- and five-liter cans.
And many car owners, not knowing where to use the remainder after filling the required 3.5 liters from a four-liter canister, add the remaining half liter into the gearbox. This is explained by the banal “you can’t spoil porridge with butter.” Some drivers even note that the manual transmission shifts smoother and is quieter.
However, if you pour more oil into the Priora gearbox than necessary, this may negatively affect the performance of the manual transmission, namely the lubricant life.
Oil may lose its properties by 20-30 thousand kilometers and cease to effectively protect rubbing surfaces, which will lead to accelerated wear of loaded manual transmission parts.
This happens due to more efficient mixing of the lubricant and the formation of foam. Foam prevents the formation of a uniform film on the surface of rubbing parts. Also, excessive saturation of the lubricant volume with oxygen due to foaming leads to accelerated oxidation.
Therefore, you should not pour oil into the box of the Lada Priora. It’s better to leave that half a liter in case of topping up or for other technical purposes.
Selecting viscosity
When choosing oil for the Lada Priora gearbox, it is important to pay attention to the viscosity of the purchased product. The following table will help with this:
Viscosity grade
Maximum temperature
We hope that, depending on the viscosity, you will be able to most accurately choose for yourself which oil is best to pour into the Lada Priora gearbox. The table shows that in winter it is best to buy lubricant in the viscosity range of 75-90W. In warmer regions and for the summer season, options with a viscosity of 80-90W are best suited.
How often to change
The factory's recommendations for changing the oil in the Priora gearbox are clearly indicated: once every five years, or every 75 thousand km. The parameter that occurs first is taken into account. This lubricant service life is assumed when the car is operated under normal conditions.
It is recommended to shorten the period between subsequent replacements if there is one of the factors complicating operation:
How much to reduce the oil change period in the Priora gearbox if the above factors exist? There is no exact answer. The best option would be to periodically check the condition of the lubricant.
How often to check the oil level in the box and after how long to change it - video recommendations
There are several methods. One of the simplest and most widely available is the drip test method. There is a lot of information on this topic on the Internet, so we will not separately analyze the methodology within the framework of this article.
Some drivers don’t bother, but simply update the lubricant in the box more often. Moreover, the service life is reduced to 30-40 thousand mileage between subsequent replacements.
It is also necessary to take into account the quality of the lubricant used. If it is ordinary mineral oil, then it is better not to delay it beyond the scheduled time.
Great owner review
The owner of a Lada Vesta (gagarinec) decided to find out which oil for the VAZ 21807 manual transmission is better to choose.
During the operation of his car, he changed the oil in the transmission several times, each time filling in a new brand of oil. Here are his observations:
As a result, he settled on the latter option. What gear oil can you recommend?
Tips for choosing quality oil
There is a table in the car's operating instructions that indicates the oils allowed for filling into the box. This table lists only a few common brands, mostly from domestic manufacturers. There is also a table with recommendations for choosing viscosity depending on climatic conditions.

So what kind of oil should I pour into the box if none of the table options could be found? And what is the best oil to choose as an analogue? These issues are especially relevant for residents of small towns and the periphery. Let's try to figure it out.
The manufacturer indicates that according to the domestic classification, lubricant type TM-4-12 is suitable. If you look at GOST, this marking means that this oil is made on a mineral basis with the addition of high-performance extreme pressure additives.
How to choose the right gear oil
This lubricant is intended for most gears (including cylindrical, bevel and hypoid gears, which are used in Priora manual transmissions) with a maximum contact stress of up to 2500 MPa and an operating temperature of up to 150 °C. The number 12 in the marking only indicates the viscosity. And, as you know, viscosity is not a dogma and is selected depending on the climate.
According to the API classification, the lubricant closest to these parameters is GL-4 class lubricant. Any oil that falls under this classification can be used.
There is an opinion that some oils with API GL-4 class quickly destroy rubber seals, and the box begins to leak along the axle shaft flanges.
But there is no confirmed information about the destructive effects of lubricants not listed in the table recommended by AvtoVAZ, and it is unlikely that it will ever appear. Since the same class implies a set of identical qualities.
Therefore, you can safely choose any TM-4 or GL-4 class lubricant from any manufacturer (not forgetting the viscosity of the gear oil).

If you don’t lubricate it, you won’t go
You can have different attitudes towards a car that many have long associated with Adidas sweatpants and cut-to-zero suspensions, but you can’t deny its popularity: the Prior has already produced more than a million, and in 2009 and 2012 this the model became a bestseller on our market.
However, despite its prevalence and continuity with previous VAZ models, the question “which oil is better to fill in the Priora?” is still relevant. However, given the variety of oils in our stores, such questions make some sense.
When choosing any operating fluid, you must first take into account the operating characteristics of its units. That is, when talking about motor oil for the Priora, we need to choose those oils that will work in engines of medium volume by passenger standards, but with medium boost. But it was on the Priora that the plant at one time began installing “short” pistons - lightweight, but having an increased specific pressure on the skirt at the time of transfer, so there is no need to skimp on anti-friction and extreme pressure additives. Let's not forget about the presence of hydraulic compensators in 16-valve engines, so we need good pumpability at low temperatures and stable viscosity at high temperatures.
At the same time, the requirements of the plant itself are very liberal: the list of recommended oils includes synthetic 5W30, and even mineral water 20W50 from Slavneft. The quality group, which is quite logical for a medium-boost cast iron engine, even API SG is suitable; there is not much point in chasing modern “environmentally-friendly” SM/SN oils. So the choice of oils for the Priora engine is wide - both budget ones for “moving from A to B”, and more expensive synthetics for those who like to put the pedal to the floor.
How to purchase high-quality original ATF?
When asking this question, first of all, you should take into account that the market is oversaturated with counterfeit products. If you want to buy transmission fluid for the gearbox of the above-mentioned vehicle, read reviews from other car owners, contact trusted suppliers, well-established stores, or order original lubricant directly from the manufacturer via the Internet. This way you will protect the boxed oil for your car from counterfeits.

List of recommended oils for Priora
The Tolyatti Automobile Plant prematurely gave its answer: “what to fill.” A whole list has been compiled of what can be poured into the Lada Priora gearbox with justification - a link to standards that confirm the quality of the product of each manufacturer.
The list of recommended automotive lubricants for the Lada Priora gearbox is as follows:
- Rosneft KINETIC 75W-90 from 40 to 35; 80W-85;
- Novoil Trans KP 80W-85;
- Lukoil TM 412 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90;
- THK Trans KP 80W-85; THK Trans KP Super 75W-90;
- Tatneft Translux TM4-12 75W-85;
- Shell Spirax; Shell Transaxle Oil 75W-90;
- Trans KP-2 80W-85.
An important clarification regarding API groups: for almost all oils this is GL4, with the exception of Rosneft Kinetic 75W-90, Shell - they correspond to GL 4/5. The difference in viscosity is as follows:
- 75W is the degree of viscosity at which the crystallization (freezing) temperature is -45֯С, and begins to thicken at -30֯С;
- 80W is the degree of viscosity, which corresponds to a crystallization temperature of -30°C, and it begins to thicken at -15°C;
- 85W is the degree of viscosity for which crystallization begins at -15֯, and already at -10֯ it thickens.
The best synthetic motor oil for Priora
Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40
The oil maintains its viscosity well as it ages, without “falling out” beyond the standard, and demonstrates low ash content and minimal deposits. The base number also allows you not to worry about the performance of the oil at standard replacement intervals. And, alas, only the price again spoils the impression.
LUKOIL Genesis Armortech 5W-40
The domestic manufacturer pleasantly surprises. Lukoil, costing quite reasonable money, fits perfectly into the requirements of the standards, and according to the results of analyzes of fresh oil, it looks almost like a double of the leader in the rating of the best oils for Priora.
These oils behave differently, of course. You should not delay the replacement time: after 10 thousand, the viscosity is already beyond the limits of the standard requirements, that is, the oil may already “die” at such mileage, especially in Moscow traffic jams. At the same time, the alkaline number “falls” and the oil actively begins to accumulate oxidation products.
But if you comply with the replacement deadlines, then it is difficult to find fault with Lukoil: wear indicators for aluminum are more or less noticeable only on samples that are “overdue” for mileage, which in itself indicates the importance of timely oil changes. For iron, the indicators are quite normal; high numbers can only be seen in samples from engines with a timing chain drive. “Prior” with its belt has nothing to be afraid of.
If we take into account the prevalence of the oil and its price, then it is definitely worthy of recommendation.

What kind of oil to pour into the Priors box: the right choice of lubricant
For this reason, you need to monitor how much oil is in the box and change it in a timely manner. The technical descriptions of the Lada Priora plant say that changing the transmission oil is required after every 75,000 km or after 5 years.
If the Priora was purchased at a car dealership of an official representative, then the gearbox will be filled with Lukoil TM 412 lubricant, which is recommended by AvtoVAZ. Break-in transmission oil is poured into the car. There is no need to immediately change the gearbox oil. This is done during the first maintenance, following the instructions of the manufacturer of this car model. It is more difficult to change gears with break-in lubrication. Transmission oil is intended to flush the gearbox system from technical debris. The potential requires the use of quality materials that can withstand enormous loads and high temperatures.
AvtoVAZ recommendations
The manufacturer recommends using original oil without additives, which can improve, and at the same time, harm the efficiency of the gearbox. Modern, high-performance motor oil is what you need for Lada Priora. The fact is that if, after filling in oil with additives, some irreversible defects arise, AvtoVAZ does not bear any warranty obligations in this case. Thus, the owner will have to pay for repairs at his own expense, which is quite fair and natural.
Quality of transmission oils
Kinetic viscosity promotes the movement of oil into friction pairs. The main gear is loaded in pairs. The highest indicator is at 100° C, where there is ideal operation of the gearbox elements and friction vapors. Lubricants with strong viscosity create conditions for increased temperature, increased resistance and pressure.
Lubricant is squeezed out through the gaskets. The kinetic viscosity index is significantly low and affects the transmission in general. Dynamic viscosity - at low temperatures, in winter the shear resistance of the grease is performed. This is a rather bad indicator for transmission operation.
Pour point is a value that shows the hardness of the oil in the cold season. However, even during hardening, there is a possibility that the wheels will turn without torque. Viscosity index is an indicator that characterizes the change in viscosity of a transmission lubricant in relation to temperature. If you want your car to behave normally on the road, then you need to monitor the gearbox. Constant checking and maintenance of technical condition are very important in the operation of vehicle components.
The transmission oil in the Lada Priora gearbox is checked according to the maintenance regulations after 15,000 km and when leaks are detected on the gearbox housing. To check, the machine must only be in a horizontal position, on a level plane. The motor must cool down. There is a hole at the top of the gearbox for the oil level indicator (dipstick). There are marks on it that will show the amount of oil.
To get accurate readings, the meter must be dry. The dipstick needs to be wiped with a rag, inserted into the opening, then removed again. The oil indicator should be at the maximum marking line. This will be the optimal value for Priora.
Selection by manufacturer
Another important criterion for choosing oil for the Lada Priora gearbox is the manufacturer’s brand. On the modern market you can easily find a lubricant for any occasion. But in reality, the real choice of quality products is not so great. Moreover, most cheap and unknown manufacturers are simply trying to make an analogue of a higher quality and popular brand. This does not always end in success.
The best choice among Lada Priora owners are synthetic oils and semi-synthetics from the following manufacturers:
It is impossible to say for sure which of them is best to fill into the gearbox. All represented companies produce truly high-quality oil, which has been tested by time and a large number of drivers.
Gearbox oils for Lada Priora
Pay attention to the temperature regimes (Fig. 3). In order to extend the life of the Priora gearbox, it is recommended not to skimp on lubricants and use synthetic lubricants that have better lubricating and cleaning properties. How is the gearbox oil changed? It is better to change the transmission oil after a long car ride so that it is warmed up. The splash guard of the power device is removed, then the box drain is cleaned, the drain plug is unscrewed, the oil is drained into a container and the plug is tightened. Then you need to fill the transmission oil to the required level. It is prohibited to use low quality oil or oil that is not suitable for Lada Priora. Otherwise, noise and crunching noise will appear during the transmission.
What oil to use in Priora 16 valves
Many Priora owners are interested in: what lubricant should they use? Oils for cars can be of a synthetic type (obtained by chemical synthesis), as well as mineral (they are made by distilling oil). This type of lubricant is much less preferable for pouring into Priora, since this lubricant quickly loses its properties and changes its chemical composition during operation. Also, this type of lubricant contaminates the motor and makes its operation more unstable.
To lengthen the time intervals between engine servicing, it is recommended to use synthetic oils. In principle, you should not mix several types of oils. But still, in rare cases, this can be done if you are stopped on the road and do not have the opportunity to purchase a similar product here and now.
Remember that for the 16-valve Priora engine it is best to buy synthetic lubricant of the highest quality.
If you have financial difficulties, you can purchase standard semi-synthetics.
