The price of a car with an automatic transmission starts at 373,200 rubles, this is exactly the car we tested. What is included in the package: 1.6 liter engine (98 hp), automatic transmission 4 gears, ABS + BAS system, front windows, driver and passenger airbag, three rear headrests, trip computer, ESD, air conditioning.

What is noteworthy is that this unit is installed on Nissan Almera and March, which have an engine capacity of up to 1.6 liters. There have never been any serious complaints about the JF414E, which is why AvtoVAZ engineers chose it. The valve body is quite reliable, and is not very often found in service workshops. All you need is to change the oil and filter on time, although this is not officially necessary, but we still recommend it.

The Granta update is immediately noticeable when viewed from the front, but from other angles and in the interior, the results of the work done are not so obvious. There are many differences, although everything was done with little blood. For example, they didn’t spend money on a new dashboard - they took it from the discontinued Kalina with minimal modifications.

The old-fashioned display with a green background has given way to stylish black and white. The interior lighting is LED, and the lampshade is combined with an emergency call button. They didn’t even forget about the seat upholstery - it now has a different pattern. It seems like a trifle, but against its background the pre-restyling Grant seems like an alien from the distant past.

In 2015, the manufacturer decided to equip the car with a robotic gearbox. The robot is based on a VAZ-2180 manual transmission with an electromechanical drive, which was developed by German engineers from ZF. For a long time, representatives of AvtoVAZ negotiated with the Italian company Magneti Marelli, but the parties failed to reach an agreement, and the company’s representatives were completely satisfied with the proposal of the Germans. This is how a new box appeared called AMT VAZ-2182, based on the most successful domestic mechanics 2180.

The modification with a robot differs from a car with an automatic transmission in lower fuel consumption, increased dynamics and lower maintenance costs. But the robot turned out to be far from perfect. The disadvantages apply not only to a specific unit on the Lada Granta, but also to almost all single-disc manual transmissions: jolts, jerks, delays in shifting gears. In general, the robot sometimes behaves unpredictably, which somewhat aggravates the intensive use of the car. For example, when you press the gas pedal sharply, the transmission is in no hurry to shift from first gear to second. Although, with the transition to manual shift mode (the driver does not fully control the transmission), the robot behaves more predictably, so in this mode you can press the pedal harder.

More practical

Granta always had everything in order when it came to practicality. Crossover ground clearance, low maintenance costs, a good range of available options - the car retained all these virtues after the update.

A useful addition was the seal along the leading edge of the hood. It is designed to reduce the amount of dirt falling from the road onto the units. Looking at the editorial Grant with a mileage of over 100,000 km, I confidently say: modernization is necessary!

Lada Granta - everyone in our country knows this car. It can safely be called the “People’s Car”, as it is the most purchased car in 2022. Unfortunately, I became one of the owners of this car.

Why "Unfortunately? Because despite the recent update of the car, it is still the same “basin” of the domestic automobile industry, with a huge bunch of sores and problems, which I will tell you about.

I bought this car in the “Luxe” configuration, not the worst, but not the top-end either, so-so. From the manufacturer, the car was equipped with audio preparation, air conditioning and turn signal repeaters on the mirrors.

Externally, the car looks like a foreign car; looking at the front of the car, it’s hard to believe that this is a domestic car. You can immediately see the intervention of foreign specialists who have at least done something, brought some kind of new wave into the domestic automotive industry, but this is not what we are talking about. I'll tell you better about the car itself.

The dynamics of the car remained at the same level, essentially nothing has changed. It was just as slow to accelerate, and in principle it remains that way. I was pleased with the suspension; it easily absorbed all the bumps and bumps on the roads. At the same time, there was relatively little shaking in the cabin. The instrument panel is generally not bad; everything the driver needs is there.

As for the air conditioning, which is an innovation for domestic cars, it blows very weakly, as if it doesn’t exist. It takes a lot of power from the engine, which has a big impact on maneuverability when overtaking.

The paintwork of the body is a completely separate issue. The slightest chip will soon begin to bloom like a chrysanthemum. After so many years of VAZ's existence, they could at least pay attention to the painting of cars. But why? And so it will go.

One of the advantages is the handling of the car, it is light and very nimble, this makes it quite maneuverable, especially in urban conditions. The luggage compartment is large, such a car is not bad for those who like to take a ride to the country. In the “four”, of course, the luggage compartment is larger, but the “four” is a different story. The interior is also quite spacious, with my height being 180 centimeters, I feel quite comfortable in the driver’s seat. The good news is that manufacturers have finally added side supports to the seats; if previously you had to strain your back on sharp turns to avoid falling off, now you don’t need to do this.

The updated car still has an old and very irritating problem - a terrible hum from the mirrors, which is very clearly audible after 80 kilometers per hour.

After the third day of operation, I began to notice that the car began to smoke. At first the color of the smoke was black, as if it were a diesel car, but after a few more days, the smoke acquired a bluish tint.

A month later, the Grant began to start more and more often not immediately, as it was in the first days, now it was necessary to struggle with the ignition, which also indicates that this car has not received any structural improvements over many years.

The worst thing for me was that, for no reason, the Check Engine light came on on the dashboard. The service station explained that the throttle position sensor needed to be replaced. Too little time has passed to change it.

Despite the fact that the car is new, it feels like it is at least 10-15 years old; it begins to crumble very quickly. There is only one justification for all this - this is a domestic car and there is nothing to be surprised about.

There is one very huge plus that I learned for myself during the operation of this car - an old foreign car is better than a new domestic car.

In assortment

Having absorbed the Kalina family, the Lada Granta began to be offered in four body types (sedan, hatchback, liftback, station wagon). A fifth one will appear soon - a pseudo-crossover based on a station wagon. No one else in the class has such an assortment.


The liftback is the most harmonious in appearance and, perhaps, the most practical body type from the Granta range. A station wagon would be preferable for those who like to load things to capacity, if not for the shortened rear, which deprived the car of part of the useful internal volume.

Installing an automatic transmission on a Granta instead of a manual transmission is a design change that affects safety. Such conversion is registered with the traffic police. True, the process itself is more reminiscent of the movie “Santa Barbara”:

  • contacting a specialized testing laboratory;
  • registration of permission to make changes to the design from the technical supervision department of the traffic police;
  • actually making changes by a specialized service;
  • contacting a laboratory to test the safety of the design;
  • carrying out a new technical inspection;
  • obtaining from the traffic police technical supervision service a certificate of compliance of the vehicle, with the introduced innovations, with safety parameters;
  • contacting the State Traffic Inspectorate to make changes to the vehicle passport and its registration certificate (in the case of a box, this item will not be useful).

In a word, it’s not a conversion from a manual transmission to an automatic transmission on the Lada Grant, but a multi-episode soap opera.

In fact, 9 out of 10 motorists refuse to play these games: they drive until the next re-registration. And then maybe it will blow by.

The brake pedal was a little stiff and was also “uninformative.” Regardless of the force of pressing the pedal, the reaction speed remained almost the same. At the same time, the pads did not work immediately, so the braking system requires a long time to get used to. Collective appeals reached the manufacturer’s company, and in 2014, at a press conference, the leading tester of the Lada Kalina project, Alexander Teryanov, said that work on adjusting the brake system did not stop. By the way, the work was planned on a fairly large scale:

  • increasing the service brake on the front brake mechanism;
  • selection of the best brake booster characteristics;
  • selection of the best characteristics of the main brake cylinder.

Renault specialists joined this process and set themselves the task of improving the car’s maneuverability and smooth ride of the Kalina and Grant family of cars.

By the way, today, in our fleet there are only Grants produced no older than 2014-2015. And Lada Granta cars with an automatic transmission were purchased by us, one might say, quite recently - manufactured in 2016. Perhaps this is why we currently have no negative feedback from our clients on this issue.

Using the dipstick you can check not only the level, but also the condition of the oil. It is recommended to check every two to three months or more often. The procedure for checking the oil level in a Jatco JF414E machine is as follows:

  1. We start and warm up the engine.
  2. Press the brake all the way.
  3. We turn on each mode alternately with the selector.
  4. We put the selector in neutral position.
  5. With the engine running at idle, check the oil level with a dipstick.

  • and other analogues with Dexron VI approval.

It should be noted that the use of Matic-D mineral oils is not allowed, only analogues of Matic-S or Matic-J.

How does the automatic transmission behave?

Many users note in their reviews that it makes no sense to get used to an outdated, albeit automatic, modification of the gearbox if it does not differ much in its operation from the AMT. But the Jatko box has a lot of advantages.

Firstly, it shifts smoother, although slower than a modern AMT. Secondly, this is a completely imported unit. However, it is more expensive and requires an additional cooling system and original wheel drives during installation. For comparison: AMT consists of almost 80% domestic parts.

As a result, the price of the Lada Kalina automatic increases by at least 25 thousand rubles.

The main problem with the Jatco automatic transmission is fuel consumption. In the city in the off-season, taking into account traffic jams, slipping, and frequent stops, the automatic transmission will “eat up” from 11.5 to 12.5 liters per hundred kilometers, depending on driving style. Under similar conditions, a car with AMT consumes about 8.5 l/100 km.
