What springs are better to install on a VAZ 2107? Comfort and nothing more

After I installed Prado springs on the front suspension on a VAZ 2109 and drove about 6,000 km on this suspension, I realized that I would also make the rear suspension stiffer. I spent a long time choosing which springs were suitable and settled on the option of installing springs from a VAZ 2102.

I bought a pair of springs 2102 which are softer. The tip is not completely wound. Therefore, on one side (the one that will stand up) I cut off this tip with a grinder, so as not to be afraid that the springs will not fit into the body cups (their outer diameter is approximately 8 millimeters larger than the standard ones).

I also bought rubber spacers for VAZ 2102 springs for VAZ 2109, the middle ones out of 3 (in other words, those that are about 2.5cm wide). Using a knife, I slightly cut off the chamfer on the outer side so that they fit more tightly into the body glass.

I also purchased Finwhale gas-oil struts for the VAZ 2108 and all the hardware on them (bottom: bolts, nuts, washers, engravers; top: donuts, donut washers, nuts).

I removed the struts and began installing new ones with brand new springs and rubber spacers. It turned out that in this configuration there is extremely low spring preload. More precisely, even negative - the spring generally dangles. I had to go to the store and buy rubber spring spacers of the next size.

And this was not enough, there is already preload, but not enough. Then we trimmed the donuts a little and removed the thick washers from the shock absorber rod. It helped.

But you still need to slightly increase the spring preload, by 2 millimeters. Maybe I’ll put some more small rubber spacers underneath - between the spring and the strut. Then I’ll return the plain, uncut bagels. And I’ll put extra thick (reinforced) washers on the shock absorber rod. That is, I usually install them so that the bottom washer of the donut is not pierced by the rod when nailing the suspension to the bump stop. But this time I had to remove them in order to provide at least some preload.

It's time to seriously think about removing the front stabilizer on the VAZ 2109. The lateral stiffness of the suspension has already become very high, and diagonal hanging begins early. So the next step is to remove the front stabilizer and install shortened iron crabs.

VAZ suspension springs

Springs are important suspension parts that work in conjunction with shock absorbers and ensure smooth ride of the car, partially dampening the energy that is transferred to the vehicle body from the road when hitting its defects.
This “tandem” also helps to quickly return the wheel to contact with the road, which is lost when hitting bumps. Comfort and, most importantly, traffic safety depend on the condition and quality of the springs, since damaged elements are not able to perform their functions flawlessly.

Production Features

The production technology of suspension springs for VAZ cars has its own characteristics. For this reason, production is carried out only at the VAZ plant and a limited number of enterprises that have received permission to produce.

VAZ front springs are produced similarly to the rear ones. For this purpose, rolled spring steel is used, from which the decarbonized layer is removed by grinding or turning.

  • Heating of the rod.
  • Winding the rod in a hot state (to maintain the plasticity of the material during the process).
  • Hardening of the product in oil and low tempering.
  • Cleaning from oxidation products and strengthening the top layer using shot blasting.
  • Cold draft of springs. To do this, they are compressed several times to bring the turns into contact.
  • Spring bondage (when they are under a certain load for some time).
  • Application of a protective coating. An epoxy coating is applied to the rear suspension springs of the VAZ, since they work in more severe conditions. However, it is important to remember that the technology for applying epoxy coating is quite complex, which is why it is used only at the AvtoVAZ plant, while other enterprises use chlorinated rubber enamel as a protective coating.
  • Static load control. At this stage, culling is carried out, and the remaining springs (which have passed the approval) are divided into classes A and B. The former have a positive tolerance range, and the latter have a minus tolerance.

Types of VAZ springs, markings

Manufacturers differentiate these parts by colors:

  • Front springs with standard pitch are painted black.
  • In blue metallic – front suspension springs with variable pitch.
  • White color – rear suspension springs with standard pitch.
  • Metallic blue – rear suspension springs with variable pitch.

Also, these parts can be divided into 4 types:

  1. Standard. These are stock springs that are installed by the manufacturer when the vehicle is assembled.
  2. Reinforced. With increased strength and thicker coils. Designed to increase the vehicle's carrying capacity and operation in difficult road conditions. They can be either standard length or extended.
  3. Elongated. Designed to increase ground clearance. Most often they are reinforced.
  4. Shortened. Springs, quite rare in the case of the VAZ, are designed to reduce ground clearance, thereby optimizing the location of the center of gravity and, as a result, improving the vehicle’s handling.

It is worth noting that it is recommended to install springs of the same class on both axles of the car. You should also replace the springs at least in pairs to avoid longitudinal distortion of the car.

In some cases, to increase the load capacity, it is allowed to install class B springs only on the rear axle, while class A parts are installed on the front axle. On the contrary, it is absolutely not possible, since increased rigidity of the front suspension with insufficient rigidity of the rear negatively affects handling and, as a result, safety car.

When to change springs?

Springs are an important component of traffic safety, and therefore neglecting their condition is unacceptable. You should think about monitoring the condition and, if necessary, replacing it in any of the following cases:

  • Characteristic sounds of the coils of springs colliding - especially when driving on a bad road or when hitting a bump.
  • Grinding, squeaking and other extraneous sounds in the area of the front or rear axle.
  • Significantly reduced smoothness of the car, increased intensity of body vibrations transmitted to the car interior.
  • Decreased vehicle controllability, increased stern skidding, increased braking distance.
  • Car misalignment: “sagging” rear, sagging front, longitudinal misalignment.
  • Traces of severe corrosion, chips, cracks on the coils of springs, traces of other damage.

Criterias of choice

The first and main selection criterion is the car model. The springs are not universal for all VAZ cars.

The second criterion is the features of operation. For example, if you often carry loads, then it makes sense to think about reinforced, elongated springs - they will increase the ground clearance and also increase the vehicle's carrying capacity. And to give the machine maximum multifunctionality, springs with variable pitch are a good solution.

What is required for installation?

To replace the front and rear suspension springs, the following set of tools is required:

  • Set of open-end wrenches;
  • Mounting blade;
  • Jacks – screw and hydraulic;
  • Wheel key;
  • Brush with metal bristles;
  • Hammer;
  • Spring ties.

Lowering a car or reducing ground clearance is one of the most modern areas of tuning today. To give their car confidence in driving, stability when maneuvering at a decent speed, and simply make it more stylish and sporty, car owners use different methods.

Some people simply cut through the springs due to lack of information or finances. You can’t expect a super effect from such economical tuning. But it’s cheap, and the car looks sporty and stylish in appearance. But you have to pay for this with convenience - you ride “like on a stool”, strong vibration shakes up the interior and everything starts to rattle. But this is not even the main thing: when cutting standard springs, it is impossible to achieve their identical characteristics, and this method leads to deformation and weakening of the body, gradual destruction of the front suspension cups, hard metal impacts on the body, and the appearance of cracks. And these are irrevocable serious losses that significantly reduce the performance and cost of the car.

Purpose

The spring is located in the gap between the frame and the wheel, thereby allowing the wheel to move up/down freely. This important part absorbs shock from the road, thereby allowing the wheel to continue moving.

Springs on the Chevrolet Niva are installed both front and rear. The rear springs perform a similar role to the front ones. Often the rear springs are strengthened or spacers are added to raise the rear end as high as possible. Thanks to these elements, shock from the road is absorbed.

The Chevrolet Niva is equipped with steel springs, so we will consider them. These elements have a steel construction with coils. The product is not particularly complex in design and is often used in all cars. Without these elements, driving a car is possible, but in this case the body will be less rigid.

Why do you need spacers for springs?

Over time, the standard set tends to sag, thereby losing rigidity, elasticity and functionality. To correct the situation, a replacement will be required, but not in all cases. So, if the product had the property of sagging, but without deformation, then you can do without replacement. For this purpose, there are special spacers that, in addition to restoring functionality, increase the vehicle's ground clearance. In this case, by installing spacers, you can save a lot on finances. If the product has mechanical damage, the spacers will no longer save you and will need to be replaced.

This is what spacers look like

Spacers are available in various designs:

  • Spacers between the spring support and the body element cup. Often this type is applicable for MacPherson-type suspensions, when when turning the strut rotates with a shock absorber.
  • Interturn spacers are the simplest in design and installation. Can be installed on both rear and front springs. They do not have the ability to change ground clearance, but noticeably change the elasticity of the product.
  • Spacers between the spring and the body bowl are the most common option, as they combine two functional features: increasing ground clearance and adding suspension stiffness. Standard and reinforced spacers are available. Standard spacers are designed to slightly increase ground clearance, while reinforced ones differ from the first ones in the height of the structure. The difference in height is 30 mm, which indicates a significant increase in ground clearance. Reinforced types of spacers for rear springs are especially popular.

Spring options for Shevik

  • Izh-Techno are an excellent solution for replacing standard models. The cost of the kit is 2800-3200 rubles, but the service life of these models is much longer. For the Chevrolet Niva, the Izh-Techno +1 spring is recommended. The domestic auto industry has something to boast about, so if you don’t want to overpay, then it’s better to install the Izh-Techno kit.
  • Kilen. These products are produced in Sweden, which already indicates their high cost. So, one element costs about 1000-1200 rubles. The thickness of the coils of this product is 14 mm for the front and 14.9 mm for the rear. For comparison: for standard products the size of the coils is smaller and is 13 mm.
  • Lesjofors. A practical analogue of Kilen, which even have the same numbers.
  • Raid. Currently they occupy a leading position, so we will tell you more about them.

Springs for Niva Chevrolet "Raid"

"Raid" is produced at one of the Russian enterprises, which is called CJSC "PPRZ". These springs have a long history, but we won’t dwell on it, it’s only worth noting that Reid is one of the most successful solutions for reinforced products for the Chevrolet Niva.

Three enterprises take part in the production of Reid springs: winding is carried out on special US equipment, painting is carried out by the ITW GEMA AG complex from Switzerland, and a Russian company is engaged in production. Each Reid spring undergoes a thorough check and only after that it reaches the shelves of car dealerships.

The main feature of Raid products is that after their installation, the car on the road becomes completely unrecognizable. If previously each hole was felt by the entire suspension and transmitted to the body, now all impacts are absorbed in the initial stages.

Correspondence of spring markings to the model

When installing springs on a VAZ suspension, it is advisable to ensure their compliance.

  • 2101 install on rear-wheel drive sedans.
  • 21012 is tougher, made from a larger diameter rod. Installed on a VAZ with left-hand drive, with special equipment, when a front suspension with increased energy intensity is needed.
  • 2102 are installed on station wagons VAZ-2102, 21014. Their length is increased by 21 mm compared to 2101, so they are installed on sedans only when you often have to drive on country roads so as not to hit bumps - when installing 2102, the ground clearance under body They cannot be used to increase the load capacity, since they inevitably lead to premature destruction of the body.
  • 2108 is installed on all front-wheel drive models, except for modifications with a 16-valve engine and Oka. By the way, in the markets they often deceive owners of VAZ-21099 sedans by offering to purchase scarce “99 springs”. In fact, there are ordinary “eighths” there, and “99ths” do not exist at all.
  • 2110 European ones are installed on the rear suspensions of VAZ 21102-21104, 2112, 2114, on the front and rear suspensions 21122 and 21124. The European version is created for cars intended for export. The ground clearance here is reduced by 20 mm, the compliance of the springs is reduced in order to increase their stability at high speed when turning. The cross-country ability of vehicles on off-road and dirt roads is significantly deteriorated.
  • 2111 are installed on the rear suspensions of VAZ 2111 and 2113.
  • 2112 are installed on the front suspensions of VAZ 21103, 2112, 21113.
  • 2121 is used on all-wheel drive models, except Oka.

Theory

It’s worth saying right away that the object we are considering should be used exclusively for travel, and not for transportation. If it is used as the second option, then alterations will be impractical. Let's talk about how to install stiffer springs on a VAZ 2107. First of all, we need to figure out why this is needed? The answer is both extremely complex and simple. The fact is that stiffer springs can dramatically increase the sensitivity to steering wheel movements. When turning, roll is seriously reduced, which means that the aerodynamics of the car remain constant, despite movements in space. The aerodynamic bag, if its configuration remains constant, begins to gradually “adjust” the car, and if it is, so to speak, deformed by tilting the body, then it will play an absolutely opposite role.

Go ahead. So how can reinforced springs on a VAZ 2107 increase steering sensitivity? Very simple. While the car tilts in one direction, the other is greatly unloaded, which means that the wheel partially, or maybe completely, loses traction with the road. Higher rigidity springs correct this deficiency and make the weight distribution on the sides more constant and uniform. As you know, a sports suspension is distinguished not only by its rigidity, but also by its height. As a rule, one coil is cut off for the tuner, because it is almost impossible to find similar springs of shorter length. If this does happen, then they will most likely be a little softer, which means the meaning is lost.

Selection of racks

Tuning version of car suspension

The choice of shock absorber struts for a VAZ-2114 can often confuse the car owner, since in addition to the original there are a number of analogues that can also be installed, as well as a sports version. Let's consider which of all the racks are most suitable for installation on a car and are suitable for our rough roads.

Native racks

2108-2905001 and 2108-2905002 – original catalog numbers of front shock absorber struts for the VAZ-2114 family of cars. The average cost is about 2,000 rubles/piece.

Original shock absorber struts

Since the conversation is about which struts are better, we can conclude that original shock absorbers do not suit car owners. But why? It seems that the design engineers took everything into account when designing this spare part, but no, something is still wrong.

The first factor that puts native stands in a negative position is that their endurance leaves much to be desired. The shock absorber seal does not last its life on smooth roads , not to mention the fact that it has to constantly absorb potholes. Since the original struts are of the oil type, when accelerating over 120 km/h it begins to loosen, and at 140 km/h this becomes significantly noticeable.

It is these two problems that become the reasons that car owners begin to look for a replacement for the original part.

What's behind?

2108-2915003 and 2108-2915004 – original part numbers for the rear left and right shock absorber struts manufactured by AvtoVAZ. The average cost is 2000 rubles/piece.

Maybe analog is better?

Analogue racks are usually either a cheap replacement for the original, with the same characteristics, or an improved budget option.

In fact, many manufacturers of spare parts offer a wide range of products that have long been loved by car owners and are highly popular.

So, let's consider a possible option for installing analogues of the VAZ-2114 shock absorber.

Sports and popular stands

Sports shock absorbers

As you know, many car enthusiasts install sports and semi-sports shock absorber struts on their cars to achieve maximum effect on the roads and maximum stability. They are more durable and absorb road imperfections much better than stock or analog struts.

There are a number of manufacturers who have proven over many years of work that parts can be not only high-quality, but also durable. So, let's look at which spare parts manufacturers offer high-quality sports shock absorber struts.

Popular solution - Kayaba

Shock absorber struts manufactured by Kayaba

“Kayaba” are legendary stands that have earned worldwide recognition. They are famous for their quality and durability. At the same time, the automobile spare parts market is filled with counterfeits of this manufacturer. Let's look at what racks the manufacturer offers for 2114:

  • EXCEL-G is a gas strut that is filled with nitrogen. Mainly intended for everyday driving, without special loads.
  • Ultra SR and Ultra GR are sporty shock absorber struts with increased stability.
  • Premium is a new generation of hydraulically driven shock absorbers. High-quality production material increases long-term use.

ProSport - CIS is not lagging behind!

Racks produced by ProSport

A legendary CIS company that has long been making sports versions of parts for domestically produced cars. There are two options for installation on a car - gas (sports) and gas-oil (semi-sports).

SS20 - forward domestic manufacturer

Racks manufactured by SS20

Popular manufacturer of domestic origin. The main specialization is the creation of tuning parts for cars produced in the CIS. For the VAZ-2114 there are 4 options for shock absorber struts from this manufacturer:

  • Highway . Rigid struts that maximize cornering when accelerating.
  • Standard . This option becomes ideal for those who live in harsh regions. They tolerate extreme heat and frost very well.
  • Comfort . A universal version of racks, and therefore they are highly popular among car enthusiasts. The design features are such that they grip the road surface properly and work well with any driving style.
  • Sports . These are the toughest racks. This option is intended for tracks, as it ideally holds the car during sharp maneuvers at high speed.

Ultra Extreme

Ultra-Extreme sports racks

Some of the most expensive options . These are combined racks that are ideal for both urban and road riding. Made from high-strength material that perfectly absorbs uneven road surfaces. The average service life is 70-80 thousand kilometers.

Plaza

Domestic sports stands produced by "Plaza"

Oddly enough, St. Petersburg racks have gained quite a high popularity among owners of the domestic automobile industry.

To avoid counterfeits entering the market, the manufacturer puts an o, which guarantees a quality mark. Although all stands are oil-based, this factor does not reduce their quality. So, let's look at what options it provides:

  • Soft-Drive. The soft version of the struts is designed for city driving. Although there is a drawback in the form of rocking of the car, they are quite durable.
  • Sport . Very rigid struts are designed for driving at high speed, because they perfectly hold the car on the road surface.
  • X-Drive . Rigid racks, which were originally designed to hold a car on a slippery road, which became a fundamental factor for their use in the northern regions.

Brembo

Brembo struts

Quite a well-known manufacturer of tuning spare parts. It received worldwide recognition for its improved brake systems, and in 2011 it entered the CIS market, where it began producing a fairly wide range of parts for the domestic automotive industry. So, let's look at what options this company offers:

  • Soft racks for those who love drag and drift in a car. But, they are not suitable for high-speed driving.
  • The best option for those who love to drive and drive a car every day.
  • ProSport. Rigid racks that are designed for high-speed driving. They perfectly hold the car on the road surface.

A new manufacturer that entered the CIS market only in 2015. The main plant is located in Western Ukraine, but this does not reduce the quality of the products. It only offers one strut option - Sport. Rigid racks are designed specifically for driving at high speed.

Rack types

For all types of cars there are three options for shock absorber struts:

  • Oily . The most common installation option on cars produced in the CIS. They are soft and suitable for any type of riding. The only drawback is that when they are installed, the car begins to rock at high speed.
  • Gas . A rigid option that prevents the car from swaying at high speed.
  • Gas-oil . An average option that will allow you to drive not only off-road, but also feel comfortable on the highway.

Lada Kalina Station wagon "Kalinka" › Logbook › Installing spacers (houses) under the rear pillars

Good day everyone. It's no secret that if you use the Lada Kalina (and any front-wheel drive VAZ) not only to transport yourself, but also to the dacha, bring building materials, etc. The elasticity of the rear springs leaves much to be desired. How it was for me. I planted two guys 120 kg + me 65 kg + 50 l. in the tank and + 30-40 kg of potatoes and that’s it. I drove 280 km on asphalt and the result was that the rear fender liners were worn out on uneven roads (you know what the roads in Russia are like). I put the patches on. I decided to install spacers (houses. How I did it. 1). I took off the wheel. I cleaned everything that I will unscrew from dirt; 2). Unscrewed the lower bolt and nut securing the strut to the beam; 3). I took a pipe, inserted it into a round hole in the beam, pressed it, installed a spacer and screwed it on with a bolt (it comes included); 4). I secured the stand to the spacer with the original bolt and nut;

5). Installed the wheel. 6). On the other hand, we perform all operations in the same way; 6). I finally tightened the bolt and nut that secures the strut to the spacer (it is necessary to tighten it when the suspension is loaded). 7). Adjusted the brake force distributor (“sorcerer”). Place the car on a flat surface and rock the rear of the car several times to begin the adjustment.

After adjusting the regulator, test the brakes in action. Accelerate the car to 40-50 km/h and brake. If the regulator is adjusted correctly, the front wheels will lock first and the rear wheels should lock immediately, but not vice versa.

Adjustment is needed to set the start of braking of the rear wheels relative to the front wheels at different vehicle loads.

Note on installing spacers. The spacers must be installed correctly, otherwise the rack will break and the lower ear of the rack will come off under load. The spacer must be installed so that the lowest (which is attached to the beam) hole has two (in which the greater distance from the lower end faces the inside of the car, and the shorter distance faces the wheel).

The bolts and the construction must be located on the same line.

Installation Tips

  1. Is it possible to install parts of different classes?

Remember that the springs on the suspension must be of the same class. Let’s say you installed A-class parts on the front suspension, which means you also need to install “A” class on the rear suspension.

If a similar class is not available for the rear suspension, then in exceptional cases class “B” is assigned to the rear suspension.

If B-class springs are installed on the front suspension, then class “A” springs cannot be installed on the rear suspension.

Install suspensions of the same class on the left and right sides of the same axle.

  1. What springs are better to install on a VAZ 2107?

Before changing parts, make sure that it is really necessary. You can check it in the following way: standing at the front of the VAZ 2107, swing the body down. If it quickly rises to its original position, there is no need to replace the springs; they are in good condition. If the body does not rise and continues to sway, then replacement is necessary. In the same way you can check the rear suspension of the VAZ 2107.

To improve the aerodynamics of the VAZ 2107 and improve the sensitivity of the steering wheel, it is recommended to install stiffer springs than the original ones. You can buy those designed for VAZ 2104, cut off one turn. It is imperative that on a VAZ 2107 you need to change two at the same time, otherwise the car will lose stability on the roads.

It is not recommended to install reinforced rubber gaskets on 2107, because the spring will break through.

  1. Will Niva springs fit on a VAZ 2107?

If you want to make a sports tuning on the VAZ-2107, the suspension is made more rigid, this improves the quality of handling without reducing the level of comfort.

The rear springs are stiffer than the front ones. The factory ones are too soft, and the car quickly loses control, the bottom gets scratched on the road surface. To increase the stiffness of the suspension, it is recommended to install Niva springs on the VAZ 2107.

  1. What springs are better to install on a VAZ 2110?

On the VAZ 2110, the front spring often breaks due to poor quality roads, so it needs to be replaced. Moreover, you can do this yourself, without contacting a car service. All that remains is to find out what is best to choose from the range offered for the 2110.

On the front suspension of the VAZ-2110, as standard, 2108 springs are installed, on the rear suspension - 2110. In the absence of original parts, car enthusiasts are advised to install SS20 highway, the car rides smoothly and is stable when cornering.

  1. What springs are best to put on a Priora?

If the springs on the Priora have sagged, it is recommended to install new original ones from VAZ. Choose only the class depending on the goals of your tuning. Class "A" is more stringent. In the absence of the original one, according to car enthusiasts, it is better to install a kit with a lowering Eibach Pro-Kit (-30 mm).

  1. What springs are better to install on a VAZ 2114?

The VAZ 2114 suspension is quite durable, and the need to replace parts occurs quite rarely. Therefore, not all car owners of 2114 cars know what is best to choose from the wide range offered on the markets.

Sometimes springs from 2112 are installed on a VAZ 2114, they are a little stiffer, designed for a larger weight of the car, so they raise the 2112 slightly - by 2-3 cm, which means that in this way you can increase cross-country ability. If, on the contrary, there is a desire to lower the car, then it is recommended to purchase an Eibach, with the front ones being -5 and the rear ones -7, so that the car does not ride up.

So, the choice of springs for VAZ is quite wide, the main thing is to choose the correct stiffness characteristics according to the load on the car and operating conditions. You will find a variety of advice on forums and blogs. Of course, it is better to first consult with specialists. Refusal of original parts in favor of other manufacturers may be dictated by the desire to improve the driving performance of the car, but be sure to compare the cost of tuning and the result obtained.

Preliminary inspection

You should start with a visual inspection of the car, preferably in an inspection hole, and compiling a list of parts that need to be replaced along with the springs.

1. Inspect the internal arches and spring seats for cracks in the supporting metal. Welding work may be required.

2. If there are oil stains on the shock absorbers , then they will also have to be changed.

3. Along with the rear springs, it is worth replacing the shock absorber bushings, and at the same time the bushings for the rear links.

4. Inspect the rear brake hose for cracks. A cracked hose should be replaced, followed by bleeding the brake system.

Replace the cracked brake hose with a new one

The list of spare parts for replacing rear springs usually looks like this:

a) rear springs with rubber spacers and metal linings of standard size;

b) bushings for shock absorbers;

We replace shock absorber bushings on a VAZ-2107

c) new torque rods or rubber bushings on them.

When the bushings wear out, it is easier to replace the tie rods as an assembly

Models

Now let's name several of the most popular, popular models of shock absorbers that are in demand among VAZ 2109 owners. This, perhaps, will allow you to decide which struts are best for you.

Model

Peculiarities

A hybrid stand with many positive reviews. Moderately hard, the ride is quite soft. With active use they will last 1-1.5 years. With rare use the car will last for years

A hybrid that is in many ways superior to the previous version in terms of rigidity. But the car holds perfectly on the road. They can withstand heavy use for a year, but then often leak oil. Price higher than Kayaba

Oily soft struts that fans of hard riding will not like. In many ways it is superior to the standard VAZ 2109 system, but in terms of road control it is inferior to Blisten and Kayaba. The price is close to the latter, lasts about 1 year

Gas shock absorbers, which are chosen mainly by street racers, racers, and fans of very hard riding. That’s why reviews among ordinary drivers are mostly negative. The rigidity is very high, but it lasts quite a long time

A budget option for racks for those who cannot afford the high costs of their own car. In many ways similar to Kayaba in its characteristics, but a little tougher. Budget-friendly in all respects, although the stand can last up to 3 years with moderate use

Kayaba kit

When choosing shock absorbers, focus on your own requirements for comfort and vehicle handling, and also take into account the financial side of the issue.

We identify defects

1. Inspect the axle shaft, oil seal, bearing seat in the bridge beam.

2. Use your fingers to check the bearing for radial or axial play; if there is play, the axle shaft assembly should be replaced. Since, let me remind you, the operation of replacing the bearing itself and the locking ring requires a special tool

3. The axle shaft seal should be replaced in any case, since it is difficult to determine the degree of its wear “by eye” (if the seal is deformed, torn, or the axle shaft itself and the brake shield are in oil, then the question “maybe not touch the oil seal?” definitely disappears!) .

4. If the bearing seat in the beam looks something like in photo No. 1 (the entire or almost the entire diameter is shiny, which indicates “movement” of the bearing), then it’s time to get the material and tools, as in photo No. 2.

Material – square strip of foil 35mm by 35mm, about 0.02mm thick, made of brass (preferably).

We make cuts and bend the strip in half (see photo No. 3).

5. We lay out our product in the beam, as shown in photo No. 4, tucking the notched edge between the beam and the brake shield.

6. All that remains is to carefully place the axle shaft in place. In order for the bearing to sit completely in place, it is necessary to make several blows with a hammer (plus an extension) to the end of the axle shaft.

Why is it important to change car suspension springs on time?

So, what can happen if this car component has exhausted its resource or completely failed? There are several consequences of this unpleasant situation:

  1. The vehicle's ground clearance is reduced, which can lead to damage to other elements of the vehicle due to contact with poor road surfaces (potholes, bumps, etc.).
  2. The rubber of the wheels in the rear arches of the car begins to experience additional friction, which means it wears out faster.
  3. Control of the car deteriorates, as it may begin to tilt to one side and sway while moving.
  4. The service life of the depreciation system begins to decline sharply.

That is, a damaged spring can lead to very serious problems in the future. Therefore, the next question is quite natural: when is it necessary to make a replacement? Manufacturers usually claim that their products are ready to last for 5-10 years. But they mean that the car will only travel on good roads, without additional load. This is almost impossible to implement in the conditions of our country, so it is recommended to replace it approximately three years after the start of operation.

How to benefit from increased ground clearance?

Obviously, neither the double nor triple ground clearance of the Priora can be compared with the ground clearance of any jeep. But we should not forget that, in tandem with the improvement of certain other features of the car, the Priora’s ground clearance can give good results. Let's be clear for now.

The distance from the ground to the bottom is 165 mm. But knowing this fact alone is not enough to draw any conclusions. The motorist must certainly take into account the properties indicated below, such as:

  1. Full length of the machine.
  2. Distance from front overhang to rear.
  3. Wheel base.
  4. Vehicle track width.
  5. The presence of some parts protruding from the bottom of the car.
  6. The way the ground clearance changes when the car is 100% loaded.

Only working on the joint improvement of all these features can lead to benefit from the increase in ground clearance of the Priora.

Replacing springs with your own hands

The lowering solution discussed above is expensive, so it may not be affordable for many fans of tuning VAZ 2109 cars. Most prefer to do it themselves using budget methods, for example, by trimming the springs. How many coils of spring need to be cut on a VAZ 2109? Experts recommend no more than three.

Each turn provides the suspension with additional shock absorption, and shortening it tightens the position of the body and reduces the stroke of the strut rod. Too much lowering will make the car feel every hole and bump: the strut will not have any free play until the spring is fully compressed, and both the cup and the support bearing will come under impact. Of course, over time this will negatively affect their performance.

So how many coils of the spring need to be cut on a VAZ 2109 in this case? Sometimes the clearance is reduced by moving the spring cup slightly down the rack. In this case, special attention should be paid to the welded joint. In addition, a problem with the stand may arise due to local overheating at the welding site. How many coils of the spring need to be cut on a VAZ 2109 in this case is also a controversial issue.

Again, there is a need to turn to specialists for help, which means additional financial costs. The simplest and most convenient option from any point of view is to replace the springs with special ones, whose coil stroke is less than that of standard ones. They are more rigid and hold the load in the same way as stock ones. How many turns of the spring need to be cut on a VAZ, this issue has already been resolved.

For example, springs on a VAZ with a progressive coil pitch provide the suspension with optimal softness and do not sit down the car when driving on uneven surfaces. The main thing is to remember that a low-slung car is designed for driving on a flat asphalt road. Therefore, when deciding how many coils of spring you need to cut on a VAZ, think about what you need the car for.

It is best to lower the car by a maximum of 30 mm, but even then there is a risk of damage to the suspension. Driving off-road, rough terrain or picnics in nature is not the element of the owners of lowered “nines”. In such cases, high ground clearance is needed, and changing the standard suspension characteristics will be unnecessary.

Practice

In practice, everything does not look as difficult as in theory.
Here it all comes down solely to accuracy and precision. First, you need to disassemble the suspension, pull out the stock ones and throw them away. Of course, there is a possibility that they can be left, but only if the car is re-exported from Germany. There are not too many of them, because only 6,000 cars were transported abroad. Let's assume that this is an ordinary VAZ 2107. Then you need to purchase springs from a VAZ 2104, and then cut off exactly one turn. If you cut a little less, it won’t fit into the seat, and if you cut too much, it might jump out because it will dangle. As you can see, this is not too difficult. Another point that you need to pay attention to when installing reinforced springs is more powerful shock absorbers with a stiffer stroke. If you leave the standard ones, the rods will simply be torn out

It is also worth paying attention to the remaining elements of the suspension, both front and rear. It is worth strengthening the transverse stabilizers and panhard rods a little, and it would also be necessary, to achieve maximum effect, to duplicate the longitudinal jet thrusts. Well, if you want a very rigid suspension, then it would be better to install polyurethane rubber products.

If there is a strong “sagging” of the rear of the car, the question arises about which springs are best to install on the VAZ 2107. “Tired” springs create not only inconvenience while driving, but also problems for drivers. They are expressed in a significant decrease in the vehicle's ground clearance, and this leads to the fact that the muffler and rear part of the body can cling to uneven roads. There will also be rubber friction in the rear wheel arches.

Which springs are better to put on a VAZ 2107

We'll look at it with you. This article may also be useful for owners of other early models of VAZ classics. Replacing rear springs can serve various purposes. Some owners want to transport heavier loads, while others like tuning to improve the speed characteristics of their car. We'll talk about all this in this article.

Why are they needed on the car?

leaf spring suspension

However, the design idea did not stand still, which led to the replacement of torsion bars with coil springs. It increased elasticity, improved handling, and made the suspension more convenient to maintain. The main characteristic of a spring is the degree of compression, or as it is also called, the stiffness of the spring. The main purpose of installing springs in the suspension is to maintain the car's ground clearance and significantly reduce vibrations and shocks while the car is moving.

To ensure proper comfort, you need to correctly select the characteristics of these products. An incorrectly selected part negates all the positive qualities that can be obtained from its installation. Springs and their stiffness depend on the following parameters:

  • The diameter of the spring plays a big role. The larger the diameter, the higher its rigidity;
  • An increase in its outer diameter leads to a decrease in stiffness;
  • Increasing the number of turns leads to a decrease in rigidity;
  • Shaping also plays an important role in determining the characteristics of products.

Kinds

  • Standard types, intended for use in urban environments;
  • Reinforced parts. For production, rods with an increased diameter are used. Designed for vehicles that are designed to transport large loads, when compared with conventional vehicles;
  • Raised parts are used when several are needed;
  • Lowered products are used to reduce ground clearance, this can increase the dynamic performance of the car;
  • Variable stiffness of parts is used to ensure a smooth ride and comfort in all road conditions.

What to choose?

rear suspension

Many owners try to install stiffer parts in the suspension. Let's try to figure out what this gives to the car and the owner. This modification dramatically increases the sensitivity of the steering wheel to movements from the driver. Aerodynamics become such that during a sharp turn, the wheels on the opposite side of the roll may even come off the road, which greatly impairs their grip on the road surface.

Most often, springs from the VAZ 2104 are installed in the rear suspension. Such a replacement may not be advisable in all cases. Experts recommend such a replacement with machines that switch to using gas fuel, especially methane. Cylinders for this fuel have a significant weight, so installing such parts will be very useful. For such products, it is recommended to install shock absorbers from Niva, the stroke of which is greater than standard ones.

About the racks on the VAZ 2114

As is the case with other cars, the struts on the VAZ-2114 (which is practically the same “nine” 2109, but with minor structural changes) are located next to the shock absorbers. In other words, there are front and rear pillars. The racks are attached using the hinge method using a long rod.

Racks are a very important detail. If for some reason they fail, they will have to be replaced. You cannot use a car with broken struts, as this is fraught with emergency situations and an increased risk of accidents.

The front and rear pair of suspension struts are usually sold separately, since sometimes only one part of the car fails. When purchasing racks, you must take into account what part of the machine they are intended for, since the rear and front pairs have some differences.

Vehicle compatibility

The design of different models of VAZ cars is largely unified, so one model of racks can be suitable for different cars at the same time. For example, racks for VAZ 2114 are compatible with VAZ-2109, VAZ-2108, VAZ-21099 and other car models. The manufacturer indicates this in the rack specifications. Thus, when you buy racks, you can choose among models for different VAZ cars.

Types of racks for VAZ

Firstly, manufacturers distinguish between front and rear struts. Accordingly, when purchasing, you must first take into account the fact for which side of the suspension the kit is intended.

Secondly, different racks differ in rigidity - their ability to absorb vibrations. The more the car’s ride “softens,” the softer the stance. This characteristic in itself is not an advantage or disadvantage of the kit, since the driver must independently choose the stiffness of the struts in accordance with his preferences and driving style.

ADDITIONAL SPRINGS

Almost all the same “delights” await those who, having abandoned the idea of spacers, decide to install non-standard shock absorber springs on the car - those with a large number of turns. The procedure, let’s say right away, is not cheap, since in addition to purchasing reinforced springs, you will need to purchase long-stroke shock absorbers. And set aside money for a wheel alignment - you will need it too.

Stories from our readers

“Fucking basin. "

Hi all! My name is Mikhail, now I’ll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange my two-wheeler for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I began to be wildly irritated by the breakdowns of the two-wheeler, it seemed like nothing serious was broken, but damn it, there were so many little things that really started to irritate me. This is where the idea arose that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the melting Camry of the tenth years.

Yes, I had matured morally, but financially I just couldn’t handle it. I’ll say right away that I am against loans and taking a car, especially not a new one, on credit is unreasonable. My salary is 24k a month, so collecting 600-700 thousand is almost impossible for me. I started looking for different ways to make money on the Internet. You can’t imagine how many scams there are, what I haven’t tried: sports betting, network marketing, and even the volcano casino, where I successfully lost about 10 thousand ((The only direction in which it seemed to me that I could make money was currency trading on the stock exchange, they call it Forex. But when I started delving into it, I realized that it was very difficult for me. I continued to dig further and came across binary options. The essence is the same as in Forex, but it’s much easier to understand. I started reading forums, studying trading strategies. I tried it on a demo account, then opened a real account. To be honest, I didn’t manage to start earning money right away, until I understood all the mechanics of options, I lost about 3,000 rubles, but as it turned out, it was a precious experience. Now I earn 5-7 thousand rubles a day. I managed to get the car buy after half a year, but in my opinion this is a good result, and it’s not about the car, my life has changed, I naturally quit my job, I have more free time for myself and my family. You’ll laugh, but I work directly on the phone)) If If you want to change your life like me, then here’s what I advise you to do right now: 1. Register on the site 2. Practice on a Demo account (it’s free). 3. As soon as you get something on the Demo account, top up your REAL ACCOUNT and go to REAL MONEY! I also advise you to download the application to your phone, it’s much more convenient to work from your phone. Download here.

When do you need to change suspension springs?

  1. If the suspension spring is rusty.
  2. If you can see with the naked eye that the front or rear of the car is lower than the other, then it is necessary to replace the springs on the side that has sagged more.
  3. If the distances from the center of the wheel to the wheel arch are different on the left and right sides of the car, this is a defect in the suspension spring.
  4. In case the suspension spring is broken.

Suspension springs are not changed often (once every 100 thousand km), but you should not forget about them either; sometimes carry out a visual inspection of the car.

It is better to change the springs in pairs on the same axis and simultaneously with the shock absorbers (replacing shock absorbers involves removing the springs). If a new spring is installed on one of the axles of the car, and an already used one on the other, then the driving performance of the car may deteriorate sharply (it will become difficult to “hold the road” and “float” along the highway).
