  1. Place the car on a flat area, preferably with a hole. Loosen the bolts on the front wheels. Be sure to turn on the handbrake and secure the wheels with chocks. You need to think about safety first.
  2. Use a jack to lift the front of the car, then remove the wheel. Please note, when changing the front suspension elements, it is better to do this on two wheels at once, even if one of the struts is in satisfactory condition.
  3. Lift the hood and look for the bolts that secure the struts to the body. Look for them on the left and right, near the windshield.
  4. There is a plastic cap on the glass that needs to be removed. To do this, use a simple flathead screwdriver. The plastic element is pryed off and thus easily removed.
  5. Unscrew the mounting nuts holding the rack on top of the body.
  6. A brake hose with a bracket is attached to the rack. This element is also removable.
  7. Using a wire brush, be sure to clean all the fastening elements of the struts to the body and chassis of the car.
  8. Now take the pliers in your hands and use them to unscrew the nut. The one that holds the tie rod end joint to the A-pillar.
  9. A puller removes the hinge from the shock-absorbing strut arm. If this is your first time changing them and no one has removed them before, be sure to tighten the nut a few turns, which will protect the threads.
  10. Near the place where the fist is attached to the stand, there are nuts that should be removed. Just first mark where the adjusting bolts are located. This way you won’t have to go to a wheel alignment after replacing suspension elements.
  11. Using a hammer, knock out the bolts that hold the element and the fist. The nodes release, allowing you to pull your fist down and reach the worn post.
  12. Place the new part, then proceed to reassemble the unit in the reverse order. During the procedure, do not forget to check other components for defects, malfunctions, oil leaks, and so on.

When the procedure is completed, put on the wheels, but do not tighten the bolts tightly. By lowering the car from the jack, you can fully secure the bolts. This is an important rule that, unfortunately, many people forget about.

The front struts on VAZ 2114-2115 cars wear out much faster than the rear ones, and this is due to the fact that the front part of the car bears a large load, since the main units are located there. And now more about how to replace the front strut supports of a VAZ 2114 with your own hands. First, you should prepare the car for work - disconnect the battery, install stops under the rear wheels so that the car cannot be moved. And we begin:

  1. Raise the side to be repaired using a jack.
  2. We remove the wheel. Need I say that you need to loosen the bolts in advance?
  1. Place the brake pipe to the side so as not to damage it.
  2. Using keys “17” and “19”, unscrew the bolts securing the strut to the hub. These bolts and nuts can be thrown away immediately - reuse is unacceptable. Firstly, there is a plastic lock on the thread, and it is designed for a small number of tightenings. Secondly, metal fatigue affects and the bolt can become deformed when tightened.
  3. On a VAZ 2114, the front strut can be replaced without removing the spring. But you still have to unscrew the nut and remove the tie rod end.
  4. Using a key set to “13” you need to unscrew all three nuts that secure the support bearing housing to the car body.

After this, the entire rack assembly can be removed and a new one installed in its place. As you can see, replacing the front struts of a VAZ 2114 is not that difficult. But if you install an old spring, you will have to tinker with disassembling the old unit - this can be problematic, since long-term use takes its toll on it. Rust appears, the metal “sticks”, sometimes even penetrating lubricant cannot help.


The repair procedure is the same on both sides. Installation of a new rack is carried out in the reverse order. It is important to observe the tightening torque of threaded connections, since your safety depends on it. Use a torque wrench for convenience. At this point, the replacement of the front struts of the VAZ 2114 is completed, you can continue to use the car.

Shock absorber: its role in suspension operation

An automobile shock absorber is a mechanism in the suspension of a car that serves to partially dampen the swaying (damping) that occurs during movement or completely absorb it.

Shock absorbers are divided according to their types:

  • gas single-pipe;
  • gas two-pipe;
  • oil two-pipe.

On the VAZ-2115 model, standard oil shock absorbers are installed at the factory. Later, when using the car, owners often replace them with gas ones, depending on their driving style.

There are 3 types of racks with different characteristics. You need to choose them based on the roads on which traffic occurs. Oil (hydraulic) – quite elastic. Designed for drivers who prefer a calm, measured ride or frequent trips on unpaved roads.

Once the shock absorber malfunction is clearly determined, it should be replaced. You can carry out the replacement either at a service station or yourself. To do this you should have the following tools:

  • a wrench for unscrewing the shock absorber rod nut;
  • standard jack;
  • cotter pins, vices and puller;
  • hammer, chisel and pliers;
  • open-end and ring wrenches for 13, 17, 19, 22, 24;
  • balloon wrench.

Before dismantling the VAZ-2115 rear shock absorber, you need to remove the plastic plug from the rear strut cup and unscrew the nut securing the rod. To do this, use a special key that simultaneously fixes the rod and unscrews the nut.

After removing the nut and washer with a rubber cushion, jack up the car and remove the rear wheel to gain access to the bottom of the rear strut mount.

Using a 19-mm open-end wrench, we fix the nut, and with a 19-mm socket, we unscrew the bolt, lubricating it with pre-penetrating lubricant, unscrewing and removing the bolt from the hole, and remove the rear shock absorber from its seat. To do this, it is better to use a flat-head screwdriver, carefully prying up the lower part. The strut body is moved to the side, lowered down and the shock absorber is removed.

We take out the remaining rubber gasket inside the glass with the same screwdriver. We disassemble the old shock absorber, removing the spring, rubber bushing, cup, casing, bump stop, and then install these parts in the opposite (reverse) order on the new strut.

Upon completion of complete assembly, the rear strut is installed in the reverse order, the upper nut and the lower bolt securing it are tightened.

Signs of front strut failure

As we mentioned, the front struts can “live” much less than 60 thousand kilometers. In order to avoid problems, you must first focus on the driving performance of the car and its behavior on the road.

Rack malfunctions manifest themselves as follows:

  1. Reduced road stability;
  2. excessive rocking of the car when hitting obstacles;
  3. poor car stability during braking and cornering;
  4. increased braking distance;
  5. the appearance of oil drips on the body;
  6. the occurrence of extraneous noise or knocking in the front of the car.

Please note that if there are obvious signs of malfunction, the front struts of the VAZ 2114 should be replaced as soon as possible. If this is not done, the following consequences are possible:

  1. The car will literally bounce at the races;
  2. controllability when cornering will decrease (centrifugal forces will pull the car to the side, try to turn around, or even pull it into a ditch);

The service life of the struts is 80,000 km if they are installed during scheduled maintenance. After this they should be replaced. Some people wonder how to change the racks - in pairs or one at a time. Even if you need to replace one, it is better to change a pair at once, regardless of whether it is the rear or front struts of the car.

The main signs of malfunction of the stabilizer struts:

  • oil leaks on the body;
  • the car shakes violently on uneven roads;
  • poor contact of tires with the road surface.

If all this is present, you need to immediately contact a car service or repair the fault yourself. You shouldn’t put off repairs until later so that you don’t have to change the entire suspension.

Replacing the front struts of a VAZ 2114, step-by-step instructions

Before you start work, stock up on the necessary tools. Here you can get by with a standard set.

Prepare two open-end wrenches (for “thirteen” and “nineteen”), a special wrench for “twenty-two”, a puller designed to remove the tie rod end, pliers and a small hammer.

Please note that you should change the racks on both sides at the same time. In this way, you will save a lot of personal time and save your nerves in the future.

Otherwise, the worn and new strut may behave differently in motion, which will lead to deterioration in the car’s handling (this will be especially noticeable on wet or slippery roads).

Replacement of racks is carried out according to the following algorithm:

1. Loosen the mounting bolts on the front wheel, apply the handbrake and secure the wheels with wheel chocks. All this is necessary to prevent any movement of the car during work.

2. Raise the front part of the car with a jack, place some supports and remove the wheel.

3. Open the hood and find the bolts securing the struts to the car body (they are located on the left and right sides closer to the windshield).

4. Remove the plastic cap that is fixed on the glass. To do this, just pry it off with something sharp (a regular screwdriver will do).

5. Unscrew the nuts that secure the rack to the car body on top.

6. The brake hose is attached to the car pillar on a bracket - remove it.

7. Take a wire brush and clean all the parts attaching the strut to the elements of the body and chassis.

8. Using pliers, loosen the nut that secures the steering linkage joint to the front strut.

9. Use a special puller and remove the hinge from the suspension strut arm (photo 1). If the racks have not been removed before, then before using the puller (to protect the thread), screw the nut 3-4 turns.

10. Unscrew the nuts located near the place where the “knuckle” is fixed to the shock absorber strut (photo 2). But before that, it would be a good idea to put special marks on the adjusting bolts before unscrewing them (this will allow you to avoid doing wheel alignment).

Note! That experts still recommend doing wheel alignment when changing struts.

11. Use a drift to knock out the bolts holding the knuckle and strut in place. Separate the nodes and move the fist down and remove the stand.

12. Install a new part.

13. Carefully reassemble everything in reverse order.

In conclusion, remember a few simple rules:

  1. Carefully check all components for damage, cracks, burrs or dents;
  2. Unscrew and tighten bolts only when the vehicle is firmly planted on the ground.

If everything is done correctly, then the work of replacing both racks will take no more than an hour. Good luck on the roads and of course no breakdowns.

2. Using our hands, we rock the upper part of the front wheel of the car in the transverse direction. We check the front suspension on the other side of the car in the same way.

If play is felt (even barely noticeable), then we check the reliability of the steering knuckle to the front suspension strut and the condition of the hub bearing (see “Wheels, tires and hubs”).

Recommendation: It is better to check the performance of shock absorbers after a long trip, until the working fluid in the shock absorbers has cooled down.

3. Vigorously swing the front part of the car body in a vertical direction. If, due to inertia, the body continues to oscillate (more than two movements - up and down) after it has stopped rocking, then one or both shock absorbers are faulty. To identify a faulty shock absorber, we repeat the test, applying force first on one side of the car and then on the other.

Note: This test only identifies faulty shock absorbers. The effectiveness of vibration damping by shock absorbers can only be checked on a special stand.

4. Inspect the suspension struts - fluid leakage from the shock absorbers is not allowed.

Recommendation: Shock absorbers should be replaced as a pair, even if the second shock absorber on the front suspension is working.

5. Visually check the condition of the cushions (1) and struts (3) of the anti-roll bar, rubber-metal hinges of the arms and longitudinal braces (2), and covers of the ball joints (4).

We replace hinges and cushions with one-sided bulging of rubber, tears and cracks (see the relevant sections below).

6. Check the tightness of the nuts securing the suspension parts and tighten them if necessary.

7. Inspect the suspension parts. Deformation and fatigue cracks in suspension parts are not allowed. We replace damaged parts.

8. Using a caliper, measure the distance between the brake disc and the wishbone. If, when the body rocks, this distance changes by more than 0.8 mm, then replace the ball joint. Similarly, we check the ball joint of the other front suspension strut.
