VAZ cars of different models differ in the operating principles of many systems. There is a difference in the engine cooling and interior heating systems.

The article describes how to install a Granta thermostat on a VAZ-2110.

The main differences between the engine heating systems of the two models will be described, as well as the best thermostats that can be used for replacement.

Cooling System Differences

Before replacing the thermostat, you need to know the difference between the Granta and VAZ-2110 cooling systems. It is precisely because of the big difference that owners experience difficulties when operating the standard VAZ-2110 thermostat.

VAZ-2110

On the 2110, a common problem is leakage of coolant through the pipe connections. The reason is excess antifreeze pressure when the engine operates in various modes.

Manufacturers designed the small-circle heating system without taking into account the heater radiator. It was connected to the system in parallel, through the water pump pipe. To ensure the required pressure, a narrowing of the part of the bypass channel in front of the bypass valve was used.

While the power unit is warming up, antifreeze moves through the engine cooling lines through the pump, and only then into the interior heating radiator. The thermostat, using a bypass valve, regulates the flow of liquid into the “stove”. This valve opens as the temperature increases and the engine speed increases as the pressure in the system begins to rise.

Thus, a system with parallel connection of the VAZ-2110 thermostat interior heating is not effective. Its disadvantages are as follows:

  1. Long process of warming up the interior.
  2. Dependence of warming up on engine speed.
  3. Vulnerability of joints to high antifreeze pressure.
  4. Antifreeze boiling in the expansion tank or radiator. Boiling does not occur from overheating, but from a pressure difference after opening the circulation to a large circle.

Even replacing thermostats with five and six taps to separate the circulation does not help eliminate the main problem - poor heating. The narrowing of the bypass channel, which was made to increase the circulation rate in the heating radiator, affected the change in pressure at various speeds.

VAZ-2110 cars with a 16-valve power unit were equipped with a heating radiator with a larger internal volume than, for example, models 2109. This is also a good reason, since unstable pressure and parallel connection did not help level the temperature of the interior and engine.

Lada Granta

Here the whole system is much more efficient. During warming up, antifreeze fills the power unit and the heating radiator evenly. This occurs due to the serial connection of the heating radiator to the primary heating system. Now there is no pressure difference, the water pump does not affect the amount of antifreeze in the “stove” radiator. Driving and the interior warm up equally evenly. The design of the radiator was not a problem either. Antifreeze completely fills the entire volume, without creating air pockets or boiling.

Advantages of serial connection:

  1. The car interior begins to receive warm air after reaching a temperature threshold of 55–60 degrees.
  2. There are no problems with depressurization of connections.
  3. There is no overheating at idle (an additional fan helps with this).
  4. The power unit warms up much faster.
  5. Depending on the thermostat used, the operating temperature is always maintained at 80–90 degrees.

The cooling system based on the Lada Granta principle has more advantages. Replacement will help warm up the interior and power unit faster and more efficiently in areas with very low temperatures in winter. Next, we will describe the installation of a thermostat from Granta on a VAZ-2110.

general information

There are single-valve, two-stage and two-valve thermostats, as well as electronically controlled devices. Grants are equipped with thermostats Luzar LT0191 and Luzar LT0190 (costing from 450 rubles for the first, and from 800 rubles for the second), FENOX TS034E7 (costing from 800 rubles), VAZ-2123 (article 2123-1306010, cost from 650 rub.). It is worth mentioning such devices as VAZ-2101 GATES (article TH14580, cost - from 350 rubles), VAZ-2121 GATES (article TH15380, approximate cost - from 500 rubles), VAZ-2110 (article 21082-1306010, cost - from 600 rub.) and other devices. They are located between the engine and the radiator, but it should be noted that there are differences in the location of the thermostats on Grants with eight-valve and sixteen-valve engines.

Their main task is to prevent the movement of antifreeze through the radiator until the car engine warms up to the required temperatures. Accordingly, if the car engine does not warm up, then the coolant does not move in a large circle. Usually the thermostat is activated when the engine reaches a temperature of 80-95C. Among other things, the thermostat helps reduce the amount of harmful emissions released into the atmosphere and minimize engine wear.

The thermoelement located inside the device is made of brass, has a cylindrical shape and is filled with artificial wax. When the engine reaches a temperature of approximately 82C, this substance begins to melt, which causes it to expand. This sets the valve in motion, it opens, after which the antifreeze begins to circulate through the car’s radiator. Turning off the motor causes the wax to solidify inside the thermostat and close the damper.

Below we will talk in more detail about possible malfunctions of thermostats, provide instructions for replacing and checking them, and also share a technique for reworking and upgrading this part, allowing you to increase its response threshold to 92C.

Replacement

Before you begin replacing the thermostat, you must purchase the necessary consumables. To work you will need:

  1. Thermostat from Lada Granta. The kit should include a gasket. Models with a plastic body are not suitable for replacement.
  2. A pipe for connecting to the lower “bathtub” of the radiator, also from Granta.

  3. Steel studs “M8”, at least 9 cm long. If possible, it is better to purchase stainless steel fasteners.
  4. Steel washer. Required for installation under a temperature sensor.
  5. Connecting clamps.
  6. Metal tee.
  7. Silicone-based sealant with a temperature threshold of at least 300 degrees.

Below is a step-by-step process for replacing a thermostat from Granta.

  1. Allow the power unit to cool.
  2. Drain some of the antifreeze into a container.
  3. Remove all drain pipes from the standard thermostat. The connections between the pipes should be checked for cracks. The inside of the pipes must be cleaned of dirt and oxidation.

  4. Unscrew the fastening studs. Before dismantling, it is necessary to clean the area where the pin enters the block. Aluminum often oxidizes the metal. The pin may break when unscrewed.
  5. Clean the seat from old gasket and sealant. It is better to clean it with a wooden strip so as not to deform the joint.
  6. Screw in the prepared studs. It is very important to lubricate the threads with grease. This way the fasteners will not oxidize in contact with aluminum. Reinstall the gasket. The factory gasket does not need to be lubricated with a sealant.
  7. Install the new circulation regulator in place.

  8. Install a pipe from the lower “bath” of the radiator to the engine drain.
  9. Plug the pipe from the throttle valve. For this, two steel clamps and an M10 bolt are used.
  10. Install all pipes. When installing, shorten the heating pipe by 5 centimeters and secure it. An uncut hose will stick out and will be difficult to install and then secure.
  11. Connect the drains from the heating system and expansion tank through a tee.

  12. Reinstall the temperature sensor.
  13. Pour the missing amount of antifreeze into the system.
  14. Start the power unit.

It is very important to coat all connections with sealant. This will prevent depressurization and protect the inner surface of the thermostat pipes and outlets.

For the VAZ-2110, the best choice would be a thermostat with a temperature threshold of 92 degrees. Such a regulator will more effectively warm up the car interior. When installing, you should carefully select antifreeze for such a thermocouple.

Signs of breakdown

The thermostat is a fairly simple element, however, and it is not immune to breakdowns. Normally, after starting a cold engine, the lower hose extending from the radiator does not heat up for some time, but after the coolant temperature exceeds 85C (±2C), it begins to quickly heat up (provided the thermostat is in full working order). It is this aspect that will accurately indicate to the car owner the moment the coolant begins to circulate.

In cases where the valve cannot open, the coolant stops circulating and the engine begins to overheat. Overheating also causes incomplete opening of the valve. A delay in closing the valve, on the contrary, creates conditions for a longer warm-up of the engine, especially in the cold season.

As a rule, thermostat failure is caused by the following reasons:

  • an unstable engine (triplication often leads to valve damage);
  • wear of the rubber gasket;
  • corrosion (it is the most common cause of breakdowns);
  • antifreeze gets inside the thermostat;
  • there is a leakage of wax from the device;
  • there is mechanical damage on the valve.

Most often, a malfunction of the thermostat leads to the impossibility of further movement in the car, and therefore the faulty part must be replaced immediately.

The process of checking the thermostat is a relatively simple procedure. To begin, the removed thermostat bottle is lowered into a transparent container into which coolant has previously been poured. Next, this container is heated, periodically stirring the coolant and monitoring with a thermometer the moment when the cylinder rod begins to move. When the coolant reaches a temperature of 85C (±2C), the rod of a fully working device will begin to extend. When the liquid in the container is heated to 100C (±2C), it will extend completely.

How to correctly determine that the device is in working condition?

We warm up the engine to such a temperature that the needle does not reach the critical value, and turn it off. We open the hood, find a hose on top of the radiator (a black rubber hose with a metal clamp at the end) and the same one on the bottom. Then, very carefully, they may be quite hot, touch them. If one of them becomes hot, and the other is still cold, and the sensor shows a high engine temperature, this means that most likely the liquid does not enter the engine, but is retained in the radiator, and you need to change the thermostat to a new one. There is and another method of verification, better known as “folk”. It echoes the “experiment” that was described above, to observe the process of the thermostat, only this time you will have to put the thermostat, the functionality of which you doubt, removed from your car, into a container with water, and then the procedure is repeated as Once the water reaches a temperature of 87–90 degrees, the valve should open, however, if this does not happen, then the thermostat is no longer suitable for operation. It is also worth remembering that different thermostats may have different critical valve opening temperatures, so when purchasing a new one, check this with the seller. How to install a thermostat from Granta on a VAZ-2110

In order to replace the “native” thermostat device of the “tens” with a thermostat from Granta, you need to perform a number of preparatory procedures. First, remove the “original” thermostat from the VAZ-2110. This is done in several steps:

  • loosen the radiator hose clamps – outlet and inlet;
  • dismantle the thermostat device.

Secondly, they conduct a comparative analysis of the cooling systems of both vehicles (we did this in the previous paragraph of this article).

Thirdly, purchase the necessary parts that will be involved in the procedure for installing the Grants thermostat on the VAZ-2110:

  1. The thermostat itself.
  2. The lower pipe to it.
  3. Gaskets.
  4. Washers.
  5. Clamps.
  6. Antifreeze.
  7. Sealant (for example, Abro).

Only after these three main steps can you begin the procedure for replacing the thermostat device from Granta to VAZ-2110. To do this, experts recommend following the following instructions:

  • drain the antifreeze from the VAZ-2110;
  • unscrew the bolts securing the “original” thermostat device;
  • dismantle the temperature sensor;
  • remove the studs, lower pipe;
  • install a new pipe (do not forget to tighten the clamps);
  • plug the hose that comes from the throttle valve using an M10 bolt and clamps;
  • install new studs of the thermostat device;
  • install the Granta thermostat;
  • connect all the hoses (to do this, the hose from the heating device will have to be cut on site to a suitable size - approximately 5 centimeters);
  • install the previously removed temperature sensor;
  • connect all wires;
  • assemble the air pipe;
  • connect the filter.

After all these steps, you will still have the “native” VAZ-2110 thermostat and the pipes that came with it. To check the operation of the “new” thermostat device, you need to pour new coolant into the cooling system of the VAZ-2110 engine, and then start the vehicle engine. Do not forget to monitor the heating temperature of the coolant and regularly check the tightness of all connections.

Changing the thermal insert

You can replace the entire thermal insert. Wahler inserts are ideal for the standard Grant thermostat: 3017.87 D (at 87° C) and 3091.92 B (at 90° C). The insert changes along with the spring. This modernization is carried out using thermostats manufactured by BEHR (which is equipped with the new BAZ-2190 car). There is no need to make any modifications or fit new parts. The BEHR thermostat is dismountable, and the Wahler “thermos” will have to be cut with a hacksaw in order to remove the thermocouple.

Alternatively, you can use a Daewoo Nexia, Renault Logan or Vernet 4898.92 part as a “donor”, ​​but the diameter of the latter’s thermoelement is slightly larger than necessary and requires adjustment. For Luzar models such a replacement is not possible.

Some car enthusiasts who have made this modification claim that fuel consumption, although slightly, has decreased.
