In 2014, the domestic AvtoVAZ plant presented to its fans another modified version of the Lada Grant. Well-equipped, containing almost the entire list of modern equipment for which famous Western and Eastern models are famous, this car won the hearts of a multimillion-dollar audience and today has become one of the top three leaders on the Russian market. One of the advantages of the Lada Granta model is a good climate system, which only five to seven years ago manufacturers and drivers could only dream of. What is the climate system of the Lada Granta, what are its design features, pros and cons, possible breakdowns?

Climate control Grants

In previous years, all that a car owner could count on was an average stove, which would malfunction every now and then. But time does not stand still, and neither does technology. Various systems appeared that could be installed on cars, such as air conditioning Frost, August, Fridget and others. But the development did not stop there.

Now domestic manufacturers have decided to follow the path trodden by Western and Japanese concerns and begin installing a climate control system on their projects. The elegant and dynamic Lada Granta became such a pioneer. Climate control Grants includes an advanced heating system and an additional ventilation system.

Climate control is a rather complex structure, powered by an electrical device that drives an installed turbine fan. Not only ventilation is carried out here, but also air purification, which occurs thanks to the presence of special filters made of durable, environmentally friendly material.

When the windows are open, the exhaust is carried out through the windows, but in winter and autumn, when cold weather does not allow the glass to be lowered, in the old days there was a problem with the exhaust, but now it is carried out due to reflectors located under the rear bumper. So the atmosphere in the salon is ideal at any time of the year, no stuffiness, foreign odors, etc. And this, of course, is a huge plus for the car’s designers.

The Lada Granta's climate system switches from one mode to another by simply pressing a switch, which activates a cable, which, in turn, acts on the damper. In this way, the air flow is redirected either from the street or from the radiator stove.

Components of an air conditioner

The thermostatic valve is located in the evaporator housing and is designed to reduce pressure. This phenomenon causes the refrigerant to boil in the evaporator. It should be noted that the device does not require configuration.

As for the receiver-dryer, this unit is used for liquefied refrigerant purification. Filtration is carried out using silica gel. Long-term depressurization of the air conditioning system requires replacement of the device. This is due to the fact that the dehumidifier in the Frost model, after refueling the system, is not able to fully perform its functions. The result can be the formation of acids and their destruction inside the air conditioning system.

The components of the structure under consideration are connected to each other by a pipeline. This product is made of aluminum alloy and has a single sealed circuit. During the operation of the vehicle, it is recommended to avoid possible dents or scratches on this pipeline. The moving elements of the air conditioner are connected to each other by special flexible inserts made of synthetic raw materials. These inserts can withstand pressures up to 30 bar. Each rubber pipeline connection is equipped with rings that are designed to improve sealing. It should be noted that these rings are disposable, so they require replacement when dismantling or disconnecting pipelines and inserts.

Possible faults

Like any complex device, the climate control of the Lada Grant tends to fail, and in order to save time on detecting a breakdown, it is worth knowing the possible malfunctions of this system. As a rule, breakdowns occur in the heating mode (so important for the extreme conditions of the Russian climate). Already in the second or third year of operation, a significant decrease in the supply of hot air or a failure in the system for switching the flow of hot and cold air may be observed.

Such disturbances in the system occur either due to clogged filters or due to a defective fan. It is often prone to failure due to the fact that it is made of fragile material. To restore the operation of the system, you should replace the filters, and if after that you notice a drop in the speed of the electric motor, then you need to check its voltage. The ideal voltage is 0.5 V.

If the reading is below this figure, it means the contact in the fan is broken. If the voltage is normal, but the problem is obvious, then you will have to repair or even replace the electric motor. It also happens that it’s hot outside and you want frosty freshness. You get into the car in confidence that the climate control will not let you down. But when you turn on the system, you realize that instead of the expected cold breeze, hot air from the stove is coming into the cabin.

What does it mean to change places of cold and heat in this case? This means that the damper drive has become unusable: a break, a cable, a switch, etc. It is also possible that the antifreeze level has dropped, which disrupts the coolant circulation.

And finally, the third reason for such a failure may be a simple clogging of the radiator tubes. To fix the problem, you need to either replace the tubes or clean them, or normalize the antifreeze level, or put the damper in order. Very often the climate system malfunctions due to an air lock. It can be removed in two ways:

  • drive the front wheels onto a small hill and run the engine at high speeds;
  • Drain and refill with new coolant.

Features of operation in winter

The climate control algorithm described above is quite general. Each manufacturer develops a climate system for a specific model or series. The controller software may also differ slightly. The latest versions of electronic climate control allow the car owner to independently program some of the installation functions. The operation of climate control in a car in winter sometimes requires intervention and switching to manual control:

  • The car was in an open parking lot and its windows were covered with ice. To start moving, you need to quickly clear the viewing areas from ice. Not all climate control firmwares provide for automatic pre-heating of the windows. There may be a situation where the program provides such a function, but the specified heating time was not enough. In this case, you have to exit the automatic mode and manually turn on the glass defrost. You will also have to choose the fan speed. Once the icing is cleared, you can return to automatic settings.

DIY repair

The climate control of the Lada is susceptible to various mechanical defects, which are sometimes quite difficult to detect, but they lead to real system failures. Therefore, here you need to use a device such as a flaw detector and use it to detect a malfunction. For repair work you will need the following:

  • one flathead and one Phillips screwdriver;
  • soldering iron and solder, rosin;
  • ordinary magnifying glass.

Let's say we have a problem with a non-working heater speed controller. The first thing we need to do is dismantle the climate control, which will require unscrewing the screws and removing the device. It should be removed carefully so as not to damage the too fragile plastic. You also need to remove the connectors. The positive point here is that the connectors are marked which one should be installed and where.

Heating, air conditioning and ventilation device Grants

The heating (air conditioning) and air ventilation system operates effectively when the windows are closed and is a single complex that provides the most comfortable conditions in the car, regardless of weather conditions and ambient temperature. The system includes:

  1. A heater that increases the air temperature in any operating mode of the system;
  2. Air conditioning, which reduces the temperature and humidity;
  3. Control unit for mixing cold and hot air to achieve the required temperature in the cabin.

The complex provides low-inertia regulation of air temperature, practically independent of vehicle speed. The amount of air entering the cabin is mainly determined by the operating mode of the fan, so it must be turned on even while driving at high speed.

Outside air can enter the cabin through the door windows when the windows are down and the air blower, the air intake of which is located in front of the windshield. Air from the air blower enters the vehicle interior through the windshield blower nozzles, side and central nozzles, as well as through the lower nozzles of the heater housing.

What is air conditioner maintenance on Grant?

Maintenance of a car air conditioner on Grant consists of three main components:

  1. Replacing the cabin filter.
  2. Cleaning the air conditioner.
  3. Refilling freon.

It is recommended to change the cabin filter at every service - once every 10-15 thousand kilometers. If the car is used in rural areas, then every 7-8 thousand, since a huge amount of dust from country roads settles on it.

Cleaning the air conditioner is the process of filling the system with special foam. It kills germs and bacteria, cleans the air ducts and evaporator from mold and other contaminants.

The foam is charged through the air ducts and drain tube and is removed along with the dirt by a powerful stream of hot air from the heater. It is recommended to perform cleaning every year or when a corresponding smell appears.

Refilling the refrigerant involves draining the old freon and part of the used oil. This procedure is carried out in order to perform repairs or every 2-3 years of operation.

Air distribution of heater/air conditioner and ventilation of LADA Granta

Fig. 1 : Distribution of air flows from deflectors and air ducts of the heating (air conditioning) system and ventilation of the LADA Granta interior.
The following air flow distribution elements are located in the cabin:

  1. front door glass blower nozzles;
  2. side air supply nozzles to the driver and passenger in the front seat or to the front door windows;
  3. windshield blower nozzles;
  4. central air supply nozzles to the cabin;
  5. air ducts supplying air to the feet of passengers in the rear seat;
  6. air ducts for supplying air to the driver's and front passenger's footwells.

The quantity, temperature, direction and intensity of air flows are controlled by switches installed in the system control unit.

Filter

Before using climate control in your car in winter, carefully read the car's operating instructions. In it you will probably find recommendations for replacing the cabin filter. This air purification element plays a very important role for the operation of the air conditioning system. If the filter is clogged with dust, then heating and drying will be ineffective - the windows will fog up, and the interior will heat up more slowly. Manufacturers offer three options for filter elements:

  • paper - the easiest and cheapest cleaning method;
  • coal - act much more efficiently;
  • antibacterial - prevent the proliferation of pathogenic organisms in the air ducts of the car's air conditioning system.

It is recommended to replace the cabin filter twice a year. In some cases, the procedure will have to be performed more often - for example, when driving on dirt roads.

The climate control system in the car provides comfort and convenience for the driver and passengers. Its main difference from an air conditioner is that it constantly maintains the specified climatic conditions. The system can be single- or multi-zone. Due to its complexity during operation, car owners may have a number of questions, in particular: “How to use the climate control? What to do if the climate control does not turn on ? How to clean climate control ? We will try to talk about this and much more in detail.

The control units have the following switches and regulators: 1) Fan operating mode switch . To increase the intensity of air supply to the passenger compartment while driving and to ensure air supply when the vehicle is stationary, use the switch handle to set one of the four operating modes of the air blower fan. 2) Temperature regulator for air supplied to the cabin . To change the temperature of the air entering the cabin, rotate the temperature control knob. The blue part of the scale corresponds to the supply of the most cooled air, the red part to the supply of the most heated air. When the handle is in the middle position, air is supplied to the cabin at ambient temperature. On a car equipped with air conditioning, the system also provides an automatic mode for maintaining the set temperature in the cabin. 3) Block of push-button switches . Depending on the configuration, the unit can be equipped with: 4) A regulator for the distribution of air flows supplied to the cabin . To change the direction of air supply, use the control knob to select one of four options (clockwise):

  • air supply to the windshield (through the windshield blower nozzles);
  • air supply to the upper part of the cabin (through the side and central nozzles of the instrument panel);
  • air supply to the lower part of the cabin (through the lower nozzles of the heater housing);
  • air supply to the lower part of the cabin and to the windshield (through the lower nozzles of the heater housing and the windshield blower nozzles).

5) Recirculation system control lever . To turn on the recirculation mode, move the lever to the extreme right position. When the recirculation mode is turned on, outside air does not enter the cabin, and the air blower fan circulates air inside the cabin. This mode is used to quickly warm up the interior in the cold season, as well as when the surrounding air is dusty and gassy.

Rules for using a standard heating system

The car's operating manual outlines the basic principles of operation of the ventilation, air conditioning and interior heating systems. To quickly warm up, you need to switch the damper to the air recirculation position and the fan speed to the “maximum” position. In this case, the car windows must be closed. You should not drive in this mode for a long time, as this can lead to fogging of the windows.

The main reason for the accumulation of condensation is the difference in temperature inside and outside and high humidity. To prevent the windows from fogging up, you need to warm them up by pointing the heater deflectors at them and dry the air by turning on the air conditioning. However, when the vehicle is driven under heavy loads (for example, on long climbs) with the air conditioning turned on, the engine may overheat, so in such conditions it is necessary to monitor its temperature. Condensation is usually the result of luggage blocking the vents.

Incorrect operation of the ventilation and heating system may be caused by a malfunction of the temperature sensor located in the interior lamp. It is not recommended to drive with the windows open in hot weather with the air conditioning running.

The vehicle's ventilation, air conditioning and heating system creates conditions for normal and comfortable driving in any climate zone. AvtoVAZ engineers developed and implemented a simple and reliable heating concept for the Lada Granta model. But for the system to operate effectively, certain rules must be followed, which will help avoid unexpected breakdowns.

Purpose of air conditioners and their design

Cars produced by AvtoVAZ are equipped with heating, ventilation and climate control systems. Like most models of this manufacturer, the Lada Granta is equipped with the same type of climate control systems, which do not have any fundamental differences between themselves. Below we will talk about all the elements of the air conditioner, providing brief descriptions of each of them. So, they include:

1 – capacitor; 2 – pipeline connecting the compressor to the evaporator; 3 – pipeline connecting the condenser to the evaporator; 4 – pipeline connecting the compressor to the evaporator; 5 – thermostatic valve; 6 – evaporator; 7 – compressor; 8 – pipeline connecting the compressor to the condenser; 9 – pressure sensor.

  • A condenser is an element in which refrigerant vapor (usually freon) is condensed, after which the resulting warm air flow is transferred to the atmosphere;
  • Pipelines are intended to connect all elements of the system into one; they are equipped with threaded end connections;
  • Thermostatic valves are pipeline chokes; their task is to reduce the pressure level of the refrigerant before it evaporates;
  • An evaporator is a heat exchanger designed to evaporate freon and absorb heat;
  • The compressor is designed to compress the working medium and ensure the movement of freon;
  • The receiver-dryer is designed to facilitate the processes of cleaning and accumulating freon, as well as removing excess moisture. At the same time, it serves as a reservoir for collecting the refrigerant coming from the condenser;
  • Pressure sensors are installed on pipelines with increased pressure levels. Their task is to send a signal to turn the compressor on or off when any deviation from the operating pressure indicators is detected;
  • A sensor that monitors the temperature in the cabin is mounted on the ceiling. As its name implies, it is a device designed to control and record the temperature inside the car;
  • The automatic control controller is also located inside the cabin; it is responsible for managing the entire installation. Its tasks include regulating the speed at which the fan rotates, air distribution, and monitoring and regulating the temperature inside the cabin.

Humidity reduction function

Almost everyone knows that an air conditioner, while working to cool, dries the air. Not many people have heard how climate control in a car copes with this task in winter. To ensure this function, the installation is equipped with a special humidity meter. Data from this sensor is sent to the controller. At low negative temperatures, air dehumidification is usually not required; the stove can handle moisture vapor. The situation changes at temperatures close to zero, in conditions of wet snow, and during a thaw. The car windows begin to fog up intensely. In this situation, your climate control system will operate as follows:

  • the humidity sensor will inform the controller about the need to remove excess moisture;
  • the controller will give a command to turn on the air conditioner and stove simultaneously;
  • moist air passing through the air conditioner evaporator will leave moisture particles in the form of condensation or frost on the heat exchanger honeycombs;
  • After the evaporator, the air enters the stove radiator, where it is also further dried.

Thus, the use of climate control prevents the windows from fogging up and provides comfortable driving conditions in winter.

Possible faults

When operating an air conditioner, owners may experience a number of problems, in particular: loud noise, poor cooling, or problems turning on the air conditioner. If you happen to encounter something similar, do not be upset ahead of time - you yourself can determine the cause of the breakdown. How to reliably find out whether the air conditioner is really malfunctioning?

Compare the difference in air temperature outside with the temperature reading obtained after operating the air conditioner, and if the resulting difference is 5 degrees or more, the device is faulty.

Another clear sign of a breakdown will be the absence of backlight on the air conditioner switch. There is other evidence of disruption of its functioning. For example, the clutch often breaks, making it impossible to start the equipment. In addition, the compressor installed on your car may also jam; in this case, the clutch will continue to rotate, but it will be accompanied by distinct clicks.

Another sign of a possible malfunction is the slight rotation of the compressor shaft after turning on the air conditioning system, and the simultaneous absence of cooled air. Such a violation indicates that there is no refrigerant in the system and is confirmed by diagnostics carried out at one of the service centers.

How to independently check the efficiency of the Lada Granta air conditioner?

Self-checking the effectiveness of the climate system is quite simple. All you need to do is turn on the air conditioning in your car and focus on the following aspects:

  • Normally, switching on is necessarily accompanied by a click, which indicates that the pressure disk has engaged with the drive pulley and that the compressor rotor has begun to rotate.
  • At the same time as the air conditioner, the electric fan of the cooling system must also turn on.
  • At the same time, the temperature of the air flows coming from the air ducts begins to decrease. If nothing like this happens, it is necessary to check the condition of the accessory drive belt.

The absence of a click when the climate system is turned on may indicate several violations in its operation, namely:

  • About a freon leak causing the compressor to be blocked from starting.
  • About the breakdown of the pressure sensor.
  • About the presence of a malfunction in electrical circuits.
  • About a possible break in the electrical circuit of the clutch coil winding.
  • About blocking the start of the compressor for other reasons (for example, due to a dead battery).

The presence of any extraneous noise most often signals the beginning of destructive processes in the air conditioner clutch bearing. At the same time, it can get very hot, and then you will feel a specific smell.

If the clutch rotates freely, accompanied by extraneous noise (the engine often stalls), we are most likely talking about a jammed compressor. Its internal filling cannot be repaired, and therefore will have to be replaced.

Sometimes car enthusiasts note rotation of the compressor shaft and the simultaneous absence of even the slightest cooling of the air. In such a situation, only a specialist can determine the possible cause of the malfunction.

In addition, the cause of malfunction of the air conditioning system can be contamination of the condenser, and therefore you should not refuse its regular maintenance. But a weak air supply most often indicates problems with the cabin air filter.

Do not forget that all work on repair, maintenance and dismantling of air conditioners is recommended to be entrusted to professionals and carried out only in service centers. Car owners are advised to only clean air conditioning systems themselves. Such precautions are due to the fact that even a slight contact of freon on the skin will cause serious frostbite.

How to check the efficiency of an air conditioner using a table

To carry out such a test you will need a thermometer. The order of your actions should be as follows:

  1. First, start the engine;
  2. Then the air conditioner is turned on and set to the lowest possible temperature;
  3. Set the blowing speed to maximum;
  4. The air flow should be directed “into the face”;
  5. After this, the thermometer is installed in the central air duct;
  6. The idle speed must be increased to two thousand per minute;
  7. Wait until the temperature indicated by the thermometer begins to decrease.

Then check the data you received with the information given in the table below:

If the temperature readings you received differ significantly from those shown in the table, start looking for the reasons for this phenomenon. Often they lie in low refrigerant content, the amount of which can decrease by 15% per year.

Capacitor check

The condenser is located in front of the radiator; during its operation, especially in summer, it becomes very dirty. The accumulation of pollution leads to disruption of heat exchange processes, and this negatively affects the operation of the entire climate system. Checking the condenser consists of a visual inspection by the car owner, which is carried out through the lower radiator grille. If there is serious contamination, it is strongly recommended to clean the radiator using compressed air or a brush.

Ground clearance and lack of ESC

No matter how pleasant the external gloss of the new product is, many are primarily interested in the car’s ground clearance. The value declared by the automaker is 198 mm. This parameter is relevant when measuring under the engine crankcase at curb weight. At full load the value decreases to 182 mm. And here it is worth considering that AvtoVAZ has changed the method for calculating this parameter - now these are honest values. The modernization of the suspension and 195/55 tires of the Pirelli Cinturato P1 model helped to lift the station wagon.

The increased ground clearance allowed us to have a lot of fun - to arrange a real cross-country race on a field with difficult terrain. The approach angle is pleasing - 18.9, which is more than that of one of its closest competitors, the Renault Sandero Stepway, but the Granta Cross loses in terms of departure angle - 26.1. However, it’s worth remembering here: the “French” is a hatchback, and the Granta is a station wagon, which literally means a longer rear overhang.

We also focus on the fact that the Lada Granta Cross does not have an ESC stabilization system, which is due, as Lada representatives say, to the logic of the configurations. There is a technical possibility of installing an assistant, but let's rewind a little and remember the situation with the tall Lada Xray hatch. The model was initially equipped with a non-switchable stabilization system, but consumers very much asked AvtoVAZ engineers to implement a function to deactivate it so that overcoming a slippery surface would not turn into a quest. Therefore, the absence of ESC on the Granta Cross simplifies the task if you have to slip.

Did the increase in ground clearance affect the car's behavior on the highway? No, in any case, you are unlikely to notice the difference. Yes, there is an increase in the aerodynamic coefficient and, as a consequence, a minimal increase in fuel consumption, but this is not at all critical.

Checking the heater operation

To check the installed radiator, you need to start the car engine and turn on the stove, leaving it on for about thirty minutes (a slightly shorter period is possible). Then they turn off the engine and wait until the engine cools down, after which you need to look into the expansion tank and check the antifreeze level (normally its level should not decrease). Then move into the car interior and touch the radiator, checking whether the heat exchanger is hot. To prevent possible coolant leakage, you should thoroughly check and feel both pipes by hand.

  • rpm and add new coolant.

Air in the cooling system

An air lock in the cooling system may occur when replacing the coolant. This problem is typical for old domestic cars, but on modern cars, due to the design of the system, it rarely occurs. However, if the stove began to “mope” precisely after changing the antifreeze, then you should not believe in a coincidence: an air lock is the priority version. Especially if coolant was poured into the radiator too vigorously.

A proven “old-fashioned” way to deal with an air lock: warm up the engine, stand on a slope with the front part of the car lifted up, and give it a good throttle. The stove must be set to the maximum temperature so that its tap opens completely. Some cars have a second heater for rear passengers - don't forget about it, it should also be set to the hottest mode. The method only works if the valve in the radiator cap is working normally, otherwise the air will not be able to escape out.

Reviews

Positive
1.Vladimir: Six months have passed since we bought the car, and there have been no breakdowns in such a short time. The fan refused to start several times, the reason turned out to be a bad fuse contact.
2.Vasily: I have been actively using the machine for two years, there are no particular complaints, all units are working as normal. Breakdowns happen, like everyone else, but they are minor and can be easily fixed on your own.
3.Gennady: after two months of the machine being idle, the stove heater began to supply little air. I disassembled it myself, cleaned it, works properly. My recommendations to car enthusiasts: don’t be afraid to repair them yourself.
4.Kirill: I think that Granta is put together with high quality, the price is affordable for a family with an average income. Provided timely maintenance, no problems arise.
5.Ivan: after buying the car, I immediately drained the factory antifreeze and bought good imported antifreeze. Now I don’t know any grief, the stove works like a charm.
6.Dmitry: there were minor defects, I fixed them myself, but they were insignificant and did not affect the performance of the machine.
7.Igor: I’m happy with the car, there are no major comments, as for domestic transport it’s very good.
Negative
1.Victor: Over the two years of active use of the car, I contacted the service station several times under warranty. The fan malfunctioned, then the stove heater. Decided to renovate and sell. Renault Logan is several times better than its domestic counterpart.
2.Vladlen: I’m dissatisfied with Grant’s purchase, I’ve already regretted wasting money several times. The car is not worth the investment.
3.Gennady: a year and a half since purchasing the car, constant investments, purchase of consumables, repairs at service stations.

Conclusion The stove heating system of the Lada Granta is completely copied from the Lada Kalina. There are no complaints about the equipment, everything works properly. In order for the mechanism to serve for a long time, it is necessary to systematically carry out inspection and prevention.

Many motorists save on maintenance, as a result of which the service life is reduced. An important factor is the cloudiness of the antifreeze. The manufacturer recommends replacing it every 75,000 km. Exceeding the interval causes deposits to form at the bottom of the radiator and corrosion begins.
