Jatco CVTs on Renault crossovers: a blessing or a cause for concern? What experts say about it

The Jatco company for the production of automatic gearboxes is in second place after the well-known Aisin Warner. Both of these companies are engaged in the production of transmissions, but Jatko has significantly succeeded in this business due to the production of CVT variators.

It is worth noting that the products of this company are widely recognized in the automotive market, and almost all CVTs are used in many countries around the world.

Design Features

As for the pulley itself, it looks like a pair of cones with their sharp ends facing each other. While driving, both ends come closer and then move away, which changes the radius of rotation of the pulley or the entire chain. Thus, it is possible to organize a smooth gear ratio.

Among the features of the Jatco transmission are its affordable price and small size. This should also include:

  • The presence of a heat exchanger with a liquid carrier, thanks to which it is possible to achieve a reduction in oil temperature.

  • High reliability and durability.
  • Ease of maintenance and repair.

This unit has enough advantages to make it attractive in the eyes of many manufacturers of well-known cars.

CVT X-Tronic

Renault Arcana has two CVTs in total:

  1. X-Tronic Jatco JF015E (also known as cvt7 RE0F11A) - for a 1.6 liter engine.
  2. Jatco JF016E (found under the marking Xtronic CVT-8 RE0F10D) - for a 1.3 liter turbocharged engine.

In the case of purchasing the French crossover we are considering, this type of transmission is very relevant, since there is no classic automatic in the list of configurations. In addition, the SUV with the 1.3 engine is currently only sold in tandem with the CVT X-Tronic, while the 1.6-liter version can still be purchased with a manual transmission.

Flaws

Among the disadvantages of the Jatko variator are:

  • Rapid wear of the oil pump.
  • Periodic failure of the high pressure pump.
  • Regular wear of variator structural elements, which include shaft bearings.
  • Expensive replacement.

Basically, most of the disadvantages are associated with improper operation of the car itself, and, as a result, the variator. Therefore, it is worth talking about the conditions for rational operation of the car.

Diagnostics of the JF011E variator

Most faults of the JF011e variator can be determined by diagnostics. If you feel that your variator is behaving somehow strangely (unusually, not as usual), then this is a reason to come and have the variator diagnosed.

At the initial stage of troubleshooting, the Nissan Consult 3 scanner is connected. Error codes are read from the variator control unit in real time. The indicators that affect the functioning of the variator are also assessed. These parameters include temperature, oil pressure (primary, secondary), etc.

Sometimes diagnostics involve removing the variator pan (by the amount of chips and the fraction of these chips, one or another damage to the transmission can be determined).

If there are any sounds from the variator (as you assume), then the car is raised on a lift and from below, using a stethoscope, they listen to where exactly the sound is coming from (from the variator or not). We have repeatedly encountered situations where, during diagnostics, it turned out that the variator had nothing to do with it, and the cause of the sound (as an option) was a faulty wheel bearing or CV joint.

In any case, diagnosing the variator at an early stage of the problem will help you save a lot on the cost of repairing the variator. After all, at the initial stage there are always fewer parts damaged. If you are in Moscow or St. Petersburg, call us, our variator diagnostics are free. In Moscow we have three services (in the north, south and center).

Even during diagnostics, the shade, smell of drained oil, the presence of metal shavings, and parts of CVT parts in the pan are checked. Based on the organoleptic parameters of the motor oil, it is possible to determine how regularly scheduled maintenance of the gearbox was performed, to establish the condition of the clutches, and the level of contamination of the hydraulic block lines. Taking into account the information received, specialists make a decision regarding dismantling or repairing the transmission.

Conditions for proper use

To avoid the occurrence of various “sores” or frequent breakdowns, you should:

  • Regularly monitor the oil level and condition.

  • Change the oil filter approximately once every 30 thousand km traveled.
  • In winter, warm up the engine before driving.
  • Drive the car smoothly and carefully.

Thus, all of the above conditions will help extend the life of the vehicle and, naturally, the variator.

Below is a table with the most common CVTs produced by Jatco, as well as their prices.

Variable speed driveCost, in rubles
JF011E (RE0F10A)70000
JF015E (RE0F11A)60000
JF011E90000
JF017E (RE0F10E) or JF016E (RE0F10D)90000

Thus, we can conclude that the variator is quite expensive, and therefore, during the operation of the car, it is better not to let the situation, if a malfunction of such a unit is detected, lead to its complete failure.

Models of Jatco CVTs and their cross codes for Nissan, Mitsubishi, Renault, Jeep, Dodge, Peugeot

Many global automakers install Japanese CVTs on their cars. However, according to existing tradition, each car manufacturer usually assigns its own internal codes (variator model names) to Jatco CVTs. As a result, confusion often arises when people talk about different ones (seemingly CVTs), and do not realize that in fact this is the same model, it’s just called differently.

A classic example is this variator model in Nissan cars RE0F10A/B/C

, or
W1CJA / F1CJA
for Mitsubishi cars.
In fact, this is the same model of the variator, which the manufacturer (Jatco) calls JF011E
.
At the same time, at Renault the same CVT model is generally called FK0/FK8, and at Chrysler (on Dodge and Jeep cars) this same CVT is called CVT2/CVT2M. Therefore, in order not to get confused in these numerous names, in many official reference books it is customary to designate this variator model by the name of the manufacturer itself, namely Jatco JF011E
. Then it’s easier to find spare parts and consumables and learn about the features of the repair. We hope that this information structured by us will help you understand the numerous names of CVTs.

1.Nissan RE0F01H

.
This CVT model is installed on the Nissan Altima Hybrid
(2007-2011), but in fact it is not a Jatco development, but a development by the Japanese company Aisin.
The Aisin company itself calls this variator (model) P310
.
Lexus assigned this CVT its number Q211
. In addition to the Nissan Altima Hybrid, it is also found on other cars.

Lexus RX400H (XU30, MHU38) 2005 - 2010 Toyota Kluger Hybrid (MHU28W) 2005 - 2007 Toyota Estima Hybrid (AHR20W) 2006 - 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid (MHU48, GVU48) 2007 - 2013

2. Jatco RE0F05A

(ECVT). This variator model is rarely found in the Russian Federation. Cars on which this CVT model was installed:

Nissan Micra, K11, , engine CG13DE (1992 - 2000) Nissan Micra, K11E, engine CG13DE (1992 - 1995) Nissan HK11, (engine CG13DE) (1992 - 1999) Nissan MARCH FHK11 CG13DE (1992 - 1999).

Repairing this model of variator is not economically feasible; if there are problems, it is easier to buy a used variator. The cost of a used variator of this model is 10,000 - 15,000 rubles.

3. Jatco/Nissan RE0F06A

(PCVT) / JF006e This CVT can most often be found in the Russian Federation on Nissan Primera cars. Cars on which this CVT model was installed:

Nissan Tino, body HV10, PV10, engine SR20DE, (1998 - 2002) Nissan Almera Tino (2000-2005), engine 2.0 Nissan Blubird Silphy, body TG10, engine QR20DE (2000 - 2005) Nissan Primera P11 (2002-2007) Nissan Primera, bodies RP12, WRP12, TP12, WTP12, engines QR25DD, QR20DE (2000 - 2005) Nissan Avenir (2000-2006) Nissan Bluebird Sylphy (2005-2011) Nissan Cube Cubic (2003-2005) Nissan Rnessa (2000-2001) Nissan Wingroad 2.0 (2000-2005) Nissan Serena (2000-2005) 2.0

4. Jatco JF009E /Nissan RE0F08A/B

(PCVT, MCVT). This CVT model was produced from 2002 to 2014 and installed on cars with 1.5 and 1.8 liter gasoline engines. This variator is most often found in the Russian Federation on right-hand drive cars:

Nissan CUBE, BZ11 body, CR14DE engine (10.2002 - 05.2005) Nissan NOTE, E11, Y12, YZ11 bodies, HR15DE engine (2005 - 2012) Nissan TIIDA, C11, JC11 bodies, HR15DE, HR18DE engines, (2005 - 2012) Nissan TIIDA LATIO, SC11, SJC11 bodies, HR15DE, HR18DE engines, (2004 - 2012) Nissan WINGROAD, Y12, JY12 bodies, HR15DE, HR18DE engines, (2005 - 2014) Nissan Versa (2006 - 2010)

In case of any problems with the RE0F08A/B variator, there is no economic(!) sense in repairing it. The reason is that new spare parts for RE0F08A/B are not cheap to begin with. For example, a new metal belt for this variator alone costs 17,000 rubles, that is, you logically already understand that a major overhaul of this variator with work (!) new oil, filters, new seals and gaskets will cost you 60,000 rubles or more . A used variator RE0F08A/B now costs 15,000 - 25,000 rubles. And it is logical that when people understand this mathematics, they decide to buy a used CVT of this model. But this does not always happen, for example, CVTs JF010E, JF011E, JF015E, etc. - it is more profitable to repair than to buy used.

5. Jatco/Nissan RE0F21A

(NCVT) A rare variator in the Russian Federation. Development of the Jatco company in 1999 based on the RE0F06A (the difference is that this is an extra-lite class CVT with minimal torque). The RE0F21A variator was installed for several years on the Nissan Cube with a 1300 cm3 engine. And the Italian Fiat tried it as an automatic alternative for its “babies” Punto, Albea, Uno and others, which were in production until recent years:

Nissan Cube, BAZ10/Z10 body, L4 1.3L engine (1999 - 05.2005). Nissan March, ANK11 body, 1.3L engine, (1999 - 2002) Fiat Punto (2000 - 2011).

6. Jatco/Mitsubishi F1C1A/W1C1A

A joint development in 2000 by the Japanese company Jatco for Mitsubishi cars. Installed with gasoline engines of 1.5, 1.8 and 2.0 liters. Reliable and repairable variator. Cars with this CVT were mainly sold in the Japanese domestic market (right-hand drive cars), but they were also massively imported into the Russian Federation:

Mitsubishi Colt (2002-2014), in Z27A, Z27AG, Z27W, Z27WG bodies Mitsubishi Colt Plus (in Z27A, Z27AG, Z27W, Z27WG bodies) Mitsubishi Dion (2000-2005) Mitsubishi Dingo, CQ2A Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia, (CS2A bodies , CS2V, CS2W, CS5A, CS5AR, CS5AZ, CS5W) Mitsubishi Lancer (in CS2A, CS5A, CS5AR, CS5AZ, CS5W bodies) Mitsubishi Mirage, (in CQ2A body)

The JF016E variator (a series of variators is called CVT8) was developed by the Japanese company Jatco in 2012 (essentially as a replacement for the popular JF011E model) and from 2012 to the present, the JF016E variator has been actively installed on some car models produced by the Japanese company Nissan, Mitsubishi, Renault. In the countries of the former USSR (in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan), the JF016E variator can most often be found on cars:

a) Nissan QASHQAI (second generation, in the J11 body, produced from November 2013 to 2022) b) Nissan X-TRAIL (third generation, in the T32 body, produced from September 2013 to 2022_ c) Mitsubishi OUTLANDER (third generation, after restyling with April 2014 to 2022) d) Nissan Teana (third generation, produced from March 2014 to 2022)

The JF016E and JF017E variators are maximally unified. The differences are that JF016E is originally designed for 4-cylinder engines with a torque of up to 250 Nm, and JF017E up to 380 Nm. That is, the JF017E was installed with more powerful engines (usually 3:5 liter Nissan engines). The JF017E CVT model appeared in 2012 only as a “replacement” for the popular JF010E CVT model (aka RE0F09A according to Nissan classification). Technically, the JF017E is practically a copy of the JF016E (many of the insides of these variators are identical - the same oil pump, for example, etc.). They began installing it on the Nissan Teana car for the Russian market only in 2014 (on the Teana in body 33 with a 3.5 liter engine). But besides this, this variator has been found on many other cars since 2014:

a) Nissan Pathfinder R52, 3.5 l (08.2014 -) b) Infiniti QX60 3.5 l, (01.2014 - ) c) Infiniti JX35, 3.5 l, (11.2012 - ) d) Nissan Teana, 3.5 l, L33, ( 03.2014 — ) e) Nissan Murano, 3.5 l, Z52, (08.2016 — ) f) Nissan QUEST, 3.5 l (2015 — )

How to spot a fake

Recently, many car owners are faced with the problem of buying fake Jatco CVTs. A distinctive feature of such units is their low cost, as well as the low quality of the metal, which is why during use this transmission fails quite quickly compared to the original variator. In addition, the original can be distinguished from a fake due to the presence of engravings in the form of the inscription “Jatco” on the gearbox elements (the fake does not have them).

Therefore, when choosing a unit, you should be careful and treat the purchase responsibly. At a minimum, to avoid buying a fake, you should order the variator in specialized stores or directly from the manufacturer.

Terminology

CVT – Continuously Variable Transmission – is a continuously variable transmission that guarantees a change in gear ratio (smoothly) within a certain range. This type of gearbox ensures extremely efficient use of the power of the power unit, which reduces fuel consumption.

Therefore, many potential buyers are interested in the question of what kind of variator is on the Renault Arcana. After all, there is more than one such box.
