The front-wheel drive passenger car VAZ Lada Granta is a variant of a budget car. The manufacturer installs three types of transmissions on cars: a 5-speed manual transmission, a 4-speed automatic with torque converter and a 5-speed robot.
All of these transmissions require periodic replacement of working fluids, that is, you need to know which gear oil is best for Grants. Next, we will look at which Lada Granta gearbox oils are optimal to use, as well as what to pay attention to when selecting transmission oils for the Lada Granta.
Factory oil
According to official data, Lada Granta leaves the assembly line already with oil. Often this is a Russian product Lukoil TM 4 with a certain viscosity class, which depends on the Russian region with a particular climate. There are such viscosity classes - 75W-80, 80W-90, as well as 75W-85, 75W-90 and 80W-85.
Recommended oil for automatic transmission Lada Granta In this case, the manufacturer recommends Genuine EJ-1 ATF gear oil
List of transmission oils and their parameters approved by the factory for Lada Granta:
- Lukoil TM 4. Viscosity grade – 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90; API Group – GL-4
- Novoil Trans KP. SAE viscosity grade – 80W-85; API Group – GL4
- Rosneft Kinetic. SAE – 80W-85; API - GL4
- Tatneft Translux TM14-12. SAE – 75W-85; API - GL4
- THK Trans KP. SAE 75W-90; API-GL4
- Shell SPIRAX S5 ATE. SAE 75W-90; GL-4/5
Viscosity classes and temperature ranges for them:
- 75W-80 (From – (minus) 40 to +35 degrees)
- 75W-85 (- 40 +35 degrees)
- 75W-90 (-40 +45 degrees)
- 80W-85 (-26 +35 degrees)
Standards and factors
How much lubricant will be used depends on its quality, viscosity, operating conditions and driving style. On average, according to the manufacturer’s documentation, the consumption per 1000 km for the Grant will be as follows:
- 8 valves, engine capacity 1.6 l, power 87 hp: consumes 50 g;
- 16 valves, motor models of all varieties: consumption 300 g.
Engine oil can be consumed more intensively - a whole list of factors affects:
- Overflow of lubricant;
- Clogged or faulty filter;
- Oil viscosity. The seasonal variety is used up faster than the all-season variety. But the last one is more likely
- loses viscosity;
- Malfunction or high degree of wear of engine components: pistons, cylinders, pumps;
- In a new or overhauled engine, the increased oil consumption is explained by the grinding of the elements. When it ends, consumption should return to normal.
Changing transmission oil
If you do not use the services of car mechanics, but prefer to fill new oil yourself, then you should only do this in the warm season. According to documents, it is necessary to update the transmission fluid every 60 thousand kilometers, but you can do it a little more often. If you want to meet the deadline and time for updating the transmission fluid on the manual transmission of the Lada Granta in the winter, then choose a warmer day, and before installing the car in a pit, drive for a distance of about 5 kilometers. This is necessary to dilute the oil and increase the temperature in the box. Remember that the oil heats up during operation, so allow the machine to cool slightly before carrying out repair work.
Replacement is carried out according to the following instructions:
- Place your Lada Granta on an overpass or above a viewing hole. This will provide easier access to the gearbox. Prepare a waste oil canister, new transmission fluid and a set of tools.
- Changing the fluid in a manual transmission begins with removing the old lubricant. To do this, start unscrewing the plugs located at the bottom of the box. You should not turn them inside out right away, as in this case the liquid will not flow into the prepared canister, but into the hole. Make a half turn with the wrench so you can remove the bolts by hand.
- Place the canister and manually remove the bottom plug first, and then the top one. Thanks to this, air will circulate inside the mechanism and the oil will drain faster.
- The liquid will drain completely only after an hour. Take your time to do a better job.
- Screw on the bottom plug. Replacement does not require mandatory flushing, so we will omit this item.
- Using a special syringe (sold in all auto stores and costs about 100 rubles), fill the box with oil through the top plug. You can do this with a regular syringe.
- The box, according to the documentation, contains about 2.2 liters of oil. Make sure that its level reaches the edge of the thread of the top plug.
- Use a piece of rag to remove any stains from the manual transmission. Screw on the top plug.
Changing manual transmission lubricant on a Lada Granta is not a complicated procedure. Even a beginner can do it with his own hands. You will only have to spend money on new oil and a special syringe (it is more convenient for them to carry out the work).
How to reduce noise in a gearbox?
The noise that occurs at the checkpoint while driving is a problem that many motorists face. Some people simply get used to this fact, because the car can drive, which means everything is fine with it. Others put the car in for repair and go through all the transmission components to identify the failed part and replace it.
Cross-sectional view of the gearbox assembly
But recently, manufacturers of automotive consumables have been coming up with various innovations to make life easier for motorists. In this case, we are talking about automotive additives designed to reduce the level of extraneous sounds in the gearbox. The use of this consumable will be ideal for those who do not want to disassemble the gearbox, because this task is not so simple.
What transmission fluid to buy
Stores may offer you different options for transmission fluid, but not every one is suitable for the updated manual transmission of the Lada Granta. At the factory, Tatneft Translux with a viscosity of 75-85 is poured into it. We recommend that you choose oils with a viscosity of 75 to 90, as this is the best option for our climate.
In the store, it is important for you to find original oil of one of the brands:
- Trans KP from TNK (you can purchase something similar, but marked Super);
- Konenic;
- Shell Transaxle Oil;
- Rosneft;
- Lukoil TN4;
- Novoil Trans KP;
- Trans KP2 from TNK.
Experts recommend first of all paying attention to transmission fluids from TNK, for example, Trans KP Super is ideal for those recommended for our area. It has already been tested by many car enthusiasts and is marked as one of the best for a cable box.
Since 2013, almost all front-wheel drive VAZ cars are equipped with a “cable” gearbox. In Grant sedans, it replaced a less reliable unit designated as “2190”. In addition to the fact that the drive became a cable drive, other changes appeared. The new box is called “VAZ-2181”, and the volume of its crankcase has been reduced from 3.3 to 2.3 liters. Here we discuss how to change the oil in a Lada Granta gearbox with a cable drive.
A rare case: the “2181” gearbox began to howl at 800 km. There is confirmation in the video, and the problem was solved by changing the oil.
Types of oils
With the huge selection of oils that the market provides, there are not many recommended for use in winter. Below are all the brands for the winter period and the temperature at which they should be used. Follow the recommendations and your car will serve you for a long time. So, there are these options:
Probably, almost all motorists know that synthetics are much better than mineral water in a number of parameters:
- Lubricating properties;
- Cleaning properties (thanks to them, there is no sediment left on the parts in the form of metal particles or other debris);
- Starting in severe frost is much easier than using mineral oil or semi-synthetic oil.
The only drawback is the high cost. But in order for the car to work stably and smoothly, it may be worth spending money on such expensive oil.
Lubricant
The most important question that car owners ask is what kind of oil should be poured into the Lada Granta box. There is no clear answer to this. The manufacturer recommends the use of lubricant, taking into account the region in which the vehicle is constantly operated. However, this does not mean at all that this type will be considered the only correct solution. It is better to get recommendations from your mechanic to understand what kind of oil to buy to put into the transmission.
The main assistant in choosing the right lubricant will be a good consultant in the store or a service station employee. They can provide comprehensive information regarding the parameters, the possibility of its use based on the characteristics of operation, the year of manufacture of the car, weather conditions in the region, as well as storage conditions of the car.
It should be noted that the Lada Granta is a completely unpretentious car in terms of lubrication, but, like other cars, it requires care and attention.
A wide range of lubricants will be suitable for the parts and crankcase installed in it. If the car has an automatic transmission, in this case the choice should be more careful, since this is a more capricious mechanism. Particular attention should be paid to the oil viscosity level. It must be purchased exclusively in full accordance with the established parameters from the manufacturer.
Regulations for changing gearbox oil from AvtoVAZ
It is necessary to change the oil in the gearbox-2181 in one case - if the mileage exceeds 200,000 km. In theory, the entire service life of the car is indicated here, and the numbers are taken from the regulations.
It seems like everything is there for adding oil.
The regulations do not yet say how often to check the oil level. Such checks are not necessary, and therefore there is no diagnostic dipstick in the crankcase design. Three details will be important to us:
- Drain plug (key “17”);
- Filling plug and hole for level control;
- Reverse switch.
Be aware that the “Standard” package always includes the “2190” box. The rule is also met for new cars produced after 2013.
What kind of oil was poured into the gearbox from the factory?
From the factory, the oil in the Lada Granta gearbox may be as follows:
- TATNEFT TRANSLUX 75W85;
- ROSNEFT KINETIC SERVICE 75W85.
Each of the materials is classified as GL-4. Let us remember that we were talking about the “2181” box, the crankcase volume of which is 2.3 liters.
The filling volume can be 2.1 or 2.2 liters.
Types of gearboxes in Lada Granta
LADA Granta cars are equipped with the following types of transmissions:
- 4-speed automatic transmission
- 5-speed manual transmission (VAZ-2181)
- 5-speed robotic gearbox based on the VAZ-2181 gearbox
The JATCO automatic transmission was developed for NISSAN vehicles with an engine capacity of less than 1.6 liters. In Russia, such gearboxes are installed on LADA Granta, LADA Kalina 2nd generation cars, as well as DATSUN on-DO and mi-DO.
Some people mistakenly believe that this is a very outdated unit that is equipped with budget cars. However, this is not at all true. This checkpoint was first introduced in 2022. It was intended for NISSAN MICRA cars for the Asian market.
A simple and proven design has allowed the unit to earn a reputation as an unpretentious and fairly reliable automatic transmission. With timely maintenance and careful operation, it is capable of driving more than 500,000 km. The disadvantages include intolerance to a sudden start from a standstill and prolonged movement at high speed.
A manual transmission under the designation VAZ-2181 was introduced in 2022. It is installed on almost all LADA and DATSUN cars. This unit is an updated VAZ-2170 box, from which only shafts and gears remain, and all other components are new or improved old ones.
This version of the gearbox adds a cable drive, which allows you to shift gears more clearly and also eliminates unnecessary noise and vibration. The new unit is protected from accidental engagement of reverse gear and is characterized by increased reliability. Overall this is a good box with some negative points. Among its main disadvantages, a very strong howl is noted, especially when braking the engine.
The robotic transmission (AMT) is a manual transmission of the VAZ-2181, in which actuators are used instead of cables. It is installed on domestic AvtoVAZ cars with 16-valve engines: Kalina, Grant, Priora, X-RAY, VESTA. It was first introduced in 2022 as the first Russian automatic transmission.
The disadvantages of this unit include jerks when changing gears while driving through traffic jams and climbing uphill. Sometimes AMT may drop several gears for no reason or, conversely, not upshift for a long time at high speeds. With the release of AMT 2.0, these problems were resolved.
Preparing for replacement
First the box needs to be warmed up. Then they place the car on the pit, stop it and try to remove one plug. We are talking about the control plug (key “17”).
View from under the crankcase protection
If nothing happens with the plug, you will have to change the oil without supervision. This is no longer good. Try unscrewing the switch located on the top of the crankcase.
The oil volume in the Lada Granta gearbox is known to everyone - it is 2.3 liters. But it is still better to perform the replacement with control. Filling is done either through the control hole or through the switch hole. Access to the latter is blocked by a filter.
Filter housing operation
First, disconnect the “negative” terminal (key “10”). Then you can use a regular Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the mounting screws.
The first two dismantling steps
The thin clamp that secures the expansion tank hose is also removed (see photo).
Disconnect a couple of connectors: the mass air flow sensor and the adsorber valve connector. The first of them is oval (photo below). And the second one is turned off like this: tighten the tongue, remove the terminal block.
Down with all terminal blocks!
The filter housing can be moved to the side in the final step. There is no need to disconnect it from the corrugation.
Rubber fasteners can be defeated this way: the rubber band is held with pliers, and the body is pulled back (to the left, forward). Start with the right front support.
Reconnaissance in force
We are trying to remove the reverse switch. We look for a plastic connector on the crankcase (see photo) and immediately disconnect it.
Automaker recommendations
To avoid unexpected breakdowns and problems in the operation of the gearbox, AvtoVAZ designers have created a table from which you can select gear oil for a Lada Granta car. Before going to the store and buying the first lubricant you come across, we recommend that you study this table below.
The Granta manual transmission contains 3-3.5 liters of oil, and the level is checked with a dipstick. It needs to be changed every 75 thousand kilometers or once every five years. the procedure is performed in a convenient place, even at home, so there is no need to go to a service station.
Recommended oils
Detailed algorithm for changing the oil in a CABLE gearbox
The oil from the Lada Granta gearbox is drained through the “bottom” plug. It is unscrewed with a 17 key.
The simplest thing is to drain the oil
You need to unscrew the cap like this: make 1-2 turns with the key, then substitute the container. And then unscrew the plug by hand.
When the liquid flows out, wipe the surface of the crankcase. We tighten the plug back (torque – 29-46 N*m). Getting ready to refuel.
Hose and funnel are ready for use
Let's say refueling goes through the switch hole. Place a hose in the hole and install a funnel. And we begin to fill in new oil.
The oil volume in the Lada Granta gearbox is 2.2 liters (maximum). That's what those who unscrewed the control plug say.
Access to the control plug is blocked by the crankcase protection. If the plug was not unscrewed during preparation, measure exactly 2.2 liters. And if the control is carried out “according to regulations”, let the body be tilted to the right: place a suitable load in the passenger compartment or trunk. Tilt angle – 2-3 degrees (no longer needed).
At the final step, the crankcase is cleaned of any remaining oil. All threaded elements are tightened to the recommended torques: plug - 29-46 N*m, switch - 28-45 N*m.
Fill oil through the inspection hole
The photo shows how everything looks if you follow the regulations. The bottom plug is twisted, the top one is the opposite. And refilling is done using a syringe.
This is what it looks like on an authorized service
Oil enters the Lada Granta gearbox through the hole in the “upper” plug.
Instead of a syringe, you can also use a hose with a funnel.
The crankcase guard is missing in the photo. It had to be removed.
Algorithm: how to change
The engine oil in Grant is supposed to be changed every 15-20 thousand kilometers. The range is determined by the degree of load on the car. The higher they are, the more often the lubricant should be changed. The amount required for replacement varies depending on the type of transmission. A system with an automatic requires 4.4 liters of oil, for a car with a manual – 3.2.
You can change the engine oil yourself. It looks like this step by step:
- Warming up the engine to operating temperatures.
- Installing a car on an overpass or inspection hole.
- Power plant shutdown.
- Removing the crankcase protection (if you have a 16-valve model).
- Removing the plug from the filler neck.
- Cleaning the drain hole around the perimeter.
- Removing the plug on the pallet (you will need a 17 mm or hex key).
- Draining used oil.
- Return the plug to its place.
- Cleaning the filter housing.
- Fill the new filter halfway with oil. O-ring lubrication.
- Installation of a new filter.
- Add oil through the top neck. The total volume is 0.5 liters below normal.
- Checking the lubricant level with a dipstick. This is carried out no earlier than 3 minutes after filling.
- Test start of the engine, monitoring the absence of leaks, re-checking the lubricant level, topping it up if necessary.
Manipulations should be carried out in protective gloves - the drained oil is characterized by a high temperature.
Which oil is best to fill according to the regulations?
The standard manual does not say what kind of oil to fill in a Granta box with a cable drive. The answer is in the instructions included with other cars also equipped with the “2181” box. Here is the list:
- G-BOX EXPERT – 80W85, 75W90
- Gazpromneft – 80W90, 80W85
- TNK TRANS KP – 80W85
- TNK TRANS KP SUPER – 75W90
- LUKOIL TM-4 – 75W85, 75W80, 80W85, 75W90, 80W90
- ROSNEFT KINETIC (Angarsk) – 80W85
- ROSNEFT KINETIC (Novokuibyshevsk) – 80W85 (GL-4), 75W90 (GL-4/GL-5)
- TATNEFT TRANSLUX TM-4-12 – 75W85
- SHELL: SPIRAX S5 ATE or TRANSAXLE OIL – 75W90 (GL-4/GL-5)
If the quality class is not specified, the material complies with GL-4 standards.
Quality class “GL-5” has its own characteristics. With material of this class, gears are better preserved rather than synchronizers.
We focus on temperature
When choosing oil for the box, use the table:
- Range “-12 – +50 Gr. C" – 85W90
- «-26 – +45» – 80W90
- «-26 – +35» – 80W85
- «-40 – +35» – 75W80 or 75W85
- «-40 – +45» – 75W90
The viscosity grade is indicated on the right.
Mistakes made when choosing oils - video tips
Lada Granta is a popular car due to its modern design, technical characteristics and affordable price. As for the Lada Grant's gearbox, the transmission can be either manual or automatic. Although the Lada Granta automatic transmission is in demand, in practice the vast majority of car enthusiasts, for a number of reasons, prefer reliable and proven mechanics.
According to the manufacturer, such a box can officially be considered maintenance-free. This means that according to the regulations, an oil change in the Lada Granta gearbox is not provided. However, in practice, many car owners note that the oil from the factory in the Grant box is not of the best quality, and it also needs to be changed to increase the service life of the unit.

The best motor oil. does it exist?
- Frequent driving on bad and dusty roads, including off-road, which is not provided for by the vehicle’s capabilities
- Regular driving at high speeds, sudden maneuvers, non-compliance with traffic regulations, including aggressive driving style
- Constant temperature changes, rapid climate change, dirt and slush on the roads
- The driver makes mistakes in shifting gears, and as a result, it overheats
This is not to say that the Lada Granta is not at all suitable for such conditions. Russian owners sometimes have to subject their car to high loads, given difficult climatic conditions. But it must be borne in mind that this will negatively affect the beneficial properties of the oils. As stated above, it will become unusable ahead of schedule. Therefore, it would be advisable to reduce the replacement frequency by two or three times - for example, change the oil every 50 or 40 thousand kilometers.
In addition, it would be a good idea to check the level and condition of the fluid in a timely manner so that you can make a timely replacement.
Checking the oil level and condition
To check the fluid volume, you need a dipstick located in the engine compartment, in a special hole in the gearbox unit. You need to pull out the dipstick and look at the oil print, which should not be below the Min mark and not above the Max mark - this is considered the most optimal level. Any deviation will require level adjustment. For example, if the liquid is below Min, then you will have to add a little liquid to the specified level.
When checking the oil, you need to be careful and pay attention not only to its level, but also to its quality. This refers to the color, smell and composition of the liquid. Thus, a suspicious composition (for example, in the form of sediment) indicates contamination of the oil. The same can be said if the liquid becomes cloudy or darkened, or emits a specific odor. In this situation, replacement is clearly unavoidable.
