History of creation
The 60s of the twentieth century were the golden time of the USSR. The country recovered from the most difficult war, science and industry developed at an unprecedented pace, and the standard of living of the population grew. In 1973, the oil crisis broke out, thanks to which a flow of currency poured into the Union, which had a beneficial effect on all areas of production, including the automobile industry. The VAZ automobile plant, built in Togliatti, produced cars of the Zhiguli family that were quite good for their time. But by the end of the 70s, the base model, Fiat-124, was morally outdated and did not meet the requirements of the time, so the country needed a modern car.
In 1979, AvtoVAZ engineers developed a prototype of the first car of a whole family, which would later be called “Samara” and become one of the legends of the USSR. This car was the legendary “Eight” (What does an eight car look like), followed by the “Nine” (all about the VAZ 2109 car), which surpassed its predecessor and became a symbol of success for the inhabitants of the country of the Soviets. But the golden time of the USSR was over, and the country was rapidly rushing into the abyss, to its collapse and collapse. The resulting destructive processes hit the automotive industry, causing a decline in production.
The Gamma platform, on which both cars were built, turned out to be surprisingly successful. The front and rear suspensions, without any special changes, moved from one family to another, and even the modern Lada Vesta is equipped with them. Therefore, the obsolescence of the Samara-1 family was associated with:
- exterior;
- interior;
- motors;
- electrical equipment.
By the mid-90s, when the country was flooded with a stream of cheap foreign cars from foreign car scrapyards, the popularity of the Samara-1 family began to decline. They could not compete on equal terms with much better equipped foreign models. The “Dashing Nineties” put an end to any full-fledged developments: the plant’s engineers focused on what could be fixed with minimal effort.
The first to appear were injection power units, built on the basis of the well-proven VAZ 21083 engine. The transition to fuel injection added a little power and also reduced exhaust toxicity. The latter was especially important, because cars with such engines were planned to be delivered abroad, where there were strict environmental standards.

Then new instrument panels appeared (Panel VAZ 2108-2115) and richer electrical equipment, including air conditioners and front windows. However, this did not solve the problem of outdated appearance, so the VAZ-2109 was restyled, aka “Lada Samara-1” or Lada Samara in the five-door hatchback body turned into the VAZ-2114, or hatchback of the “Lada Samara-2” family. It was still the same good old “Nine”, but freed from the most significant shortcomings, so it looked good even against the background of modern budget foreign cars.

In this price segment, the VAZ-2114 car does not have many direct competitors. But the choice other than the 14th model may fall on the VAZ-2112 or the younger Lada Priora. There is no point in talking about significant differences, but it is clear that the Lada Priora will be newer and more modern.

Owners of the Lada 2114 note the more modern and beautiful appearance of the car when comparing the model with the VAZ-2112 or, even more so, with the “nine”. The car is even worth its price, especially when you compare it even with used foreign cars. The hatchback, according to owners' reviews, is quite easy to drive.
The latest versions received front electric windows, an on-board computer, a heated rear window, and so on. The power plant turned out to be quite playful. I can't help but be pleased with the ground clearance, which allows the car to be used not only for city trips.
The domestic hatchback is unpretentious in maintenance. The cost of spare parts is not as scary as for the same foreign cars. With such a fairly agile power unit, fuel consumption is within normal limits. The car is ideal for tuning lovers, as it has a large springboard for modernization options both outside and inside. It is worth mentioning the excellent aerodynamics.
On the other hand, it is important to take into account the far from best assembly and the very quality of finishing materials. Drivers of the VAZ-2114 complain about unreliability, lack of free space inside the car, low quality iron and paint materials. Often a car is purchased for a family, but the 14th model suffers in terms of safety, because it doesn’t even have a driver’s airbag.
Also, the car does not have air conditioning and often breaks down. There is a feeling of discomfort during long trips. The seats lack good lateral support. The front panel plastic is quite hard.
Differences between 2109 and 2114
Despite the fact that from a distance both cars look similar, the differences between them are so strong that even from a distance of 30–50 meters it is almost impossible to confuse them. A special feature of the “Fourteenth” model were new bumpers, painted in the same color as the body, and their shape was more interesting than that of the “Nine”. Also, along the middle part of the doors, trims of the same color were installed, running at the level of the bumpers. The shape of the thresholds has been changed, making them more noticeable and clearly defined. For some reason, a kind of spoiler (anti-wing) made of fragile plastic was installed at the rear. There was no practical use from this part, but the car looked more “cool”.
At the front, the car has undergone more serious changes: the chopped appearance characteristic of the Chisels was smoothed out in the style of foreign cars, and the huge block headlights were replaced with much smaller but more efficient ones. This brought the front end of the Four closer to inexpensive foreign cars of the Millennium era.
No less significant changes have occurred inside the car. Instead of archaic carburetors, fuel was injected into the cylinders by an injection system with a control unit from various manufacturers. The advantage of injection engines was the self-diagnosis mechanism built into the ECU, which, if a problem was detected, informed the driver. A new, more convenient and beautiful instrument panel also appeared, and some of the indicators were moved to the Torpedo. The “Four” was brought closer to foreign cars by a new steering column with a variable tilt angle, with which it was possible to adjust the position of the wheel.

The Lada of the fourteenth model is a deep restyling of the “nine” family, therefore it almost completely retained the dimensions of its predecessor 2109. The wings, bumpers, interior, headlights and more were restyled.

Structurally, Samara 2 is not much different from the first generation. Almost identical units (the main change is the replacement of the carburetor fuel supply system with an injection system), suspension elements and interior parts make repairing the car simple.
The stock engine capacity of the “four” can be modified. Moreover, the modification occurs without loss of resource (but only with minor interventions in the design). The combination of a manual transmission, light body weight and proven units with low consumption allows the second generation Samar to remain popular options in the secondary market to this day.

INTERIOR
As for the interior decoration of the VAZ-2114, it has inexpensive but high-quality materials. The hard plastic of the front panel creaks a lot when driving. From the point of view of our drivers, the interior can even be considered “luxury”, since it has an on-board computer, a seat heating function, two power windows and fog lights.
The on-board computer displays information about the remaining gasoline in the tank, the number of kilometers that can still be driven, average consumption and time. The steering wheel is comfortable and can be easily adjusted to suit you. It’s very nice that the steering wheel does not interfere with a full view of the instruments on the panel. The interior of the updated VAZ-2114 also has a heater with an updated structure. The doors are equipped with central locks.
Separately, it is worth mentioning the new Europanel. It has two liquid crystal displays. The left corner of the “instrument board” is occupied by a temperature sensor, which informs the driver about the current engine temperature in order to prevent overheating of the power unit. This sensor is designed in the form of a scale. Next comes the tachometer, which has a round design.
The central upper part has indicators in the form of arrows. Near the engine speed sensor there is a scale that displays the speed of the machine. The maximum value on the speedometer is 200 kilometers per hour. Finally, the upper right part shows the level of gasoline in the tank. Under this sensor there were indicators for turning on the side lights and high beams, as well as a message about a malfunction of the brake system.
Not without an overboard thermometer. The driver's seat is not the most comfortable. It simply cannot be adjusted. When landing, the notch puts pressure on the lower back, and most car owners are guilty of this. The central part has emergency signs, which during normal operation of the vehicle look like an ordinary dark stripe.
Due to the new panel structure, interior ventilation has increased. We managed to eliminate the problem of air supply to the deflectors on the sides. The upholstery of the chairs has a fabric structure, which over time becomes covered with very noticeable abrasions. Many elements of the interior decoration have a lot of play and creaking, which can be heard even with the slightest movement. But it’s nice that such a defect can be easily eliminated.
Also, the restyled Lada 2114 model is equipped with seat belt fasteners from the “ten”. The ceiling received a customizable interior lighting flashlight. Lada 2114 does not have a lot of free space for passengers. The rear-mounted sofa is uncomfortable and uncomfortable on long trips. Although the rear seats can be folded down, in their normal state they take up a lot of space.
It will not be so comfortable for a tall person to sit in the back. In principle, even an ordinary person with average height will feel uncomfortable. The rear windows are manual. A lot of owners of the fourteenth model struggle with extraneous noise in the cabin using sound and vibration insulation. However, due to such improvements, the weight of the vehicle increases significantly.
Some VAZ-2114 owners complain that the rear doors are jammed, making them difficult to open. Also, the loud and unpleasant sound of doors closing has not gone away. If the back row is folded and the shelf is removed, the usable space inside the Russian hatchback will become larger – 600 liters. In the normal position, the luggage compartment does not have a large volume - 330 liters.
It’s also unpleasant that the factory shelf, which we talked about a little higher, constantly rattles. This is why many people advise buying an acoustic shelf that will dampen such unpleasant sounds. In general, the update had a positive impact mainly on the interior, although there are some controversial issues. For example, the stove has become more powerful, but because of this the noise level has increased.
Modifications
In addition to the cars that AvtoVAZ produced, its modifications went on sale, that is:
- increased power car from SuperAuto;
- truck "Pirozhok" from the PSA VIS-Auto company.
The Russian company Super Auto installed engines with increased power on the VAZ-2114, which increased the maximum speed and improved dynamics. The only disadvantage of this modification is the need to fill in gasoline with an octane rating of 95–98.
The truck based on the 2114 is made by AvtoVAZ’s subsidiary, the PSA VIS-Avto company. This modification is a hybrid of the "Fourteenth" front end and the rear end with leaf spring suspension, resulting in load-carrying characteristics that are almost double those of the factory model.
Based on the Lada 2114 from PSA VIS-Auto they make various versions of pickups and trucks, including “Pirozhki”, also known as “Kabluchki”, that is, analogues of the IZH-2715 based on the Moskvich and the VIS-234500-30 based on the VAZ- 2107.
Transmission and chassis
All front-wheel drive cars of the VAZ family have a fundamentally similar chassis design. The front suspension is based on the MacPherson system, the rear suspension is a trailing arm. The steering, typical for all models, is rack and pinion.
Lada 2114 Samara-2 is equipped with a manual gearbox. The car is equipped with a five-speed gearbox (gearbox) with a rocker drive. Fundamentally, its design is similar to all those installed on other vase models. The main pair has a distinctive gear ratio of 3.7.
Reliability
Compared to foreign cars aged 5–10, even the new Lada Samara-2 in a five-door hatchback body was characterized by low reliability, successfully competing only with cars aged 15–20 years. But most of the faults are not critical, so you can drive the Chetyrka, gradually collecting money for repairs. However, competent maintenance and qualified repairs eliminate most problems, after which it works without breakdowns for 2–3 years. The entire line of engines, with timely oil changes (mileage 7–10 thousand km) and operation without overload, as well as without sudden cold starts, requires major repairs after 150–250 thousand km.

Most often, problems occur with wiring and electrical equipment; this is due to the poor quality of equipment manufactured by AvtoVAZ partners. Problems with gearboxes occur only on new cars, as well as poor tightening of various threaded connections, so after the first qualified repair they disappear. The mileage of most chassis elements before replacement is 30–60 thousand km, which is comparable to modern budget foreign cars.
Super-Auto
The modified modification of the “four” from Super-Auto is often considered as a separate car.
A modern 16-valve engine (124th or 126th depending on the year), the presence of a body strut, improved clutch and gearbox, suspension parts from Priora, an electronic gas pedal - an incomplete list of the unique options of the fourteenth from Super-Auto .
Surge in popularity
Despite all the childhood illnesses, immediately afterwards the car, which was called “Chetyrka,” became a bestseller, because in terms of comfort it corresponded to budget foreign cars, but was noticeably cheaper. Motors with a power of 77–98 hp. With. provided good dynamics for cars of this class, and stability and controllability are considered sufficient even today for budget B-segment models. Therefore, when purchasing a VAZ-2114, buyers received a Russian car with the comfort of a foreign car, which put the Chetyrka on par with foreign models that were locally or entirely manufactured in the Russian Federation.
In addition, in the first decade of the 21st century, “Nine” was no longer a symbol of success, but that generation, which at the time of the appearance of the VAZ-2109 could not buy it due to youth and financial difficulties, transferred its love to the new model. After all, by this time the entire Samara-1 family was very outdated and its main buyers were only those who did not have enough money for a “normal car”. The appearance of the successor to the Four, the Priora hatchback, did not reduce the popularity of this model.
Even at the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century, the VAZ-2114 looks good against the background of foreign cars aged 15–20 years, and is also not much inferior to them in reliability, because age takes its toll.
Basic
The minimum version of the “four” configuration does not provide a large number of functions, but this car is excellent for everyday driving. The minimum number of electrical appliances reduces the likelihood of breakdowns. The basic version 2114 is equipped with the following options:

- Availability of audio training;
- Built-in error diagnostic function via the dashboard.
In comparison with the previous generation of Samara, and specifically with the 2109, which is the predecessor of the Four, many improvements were made.
