We change spark plugs on a VAZ-2114 with our own hands: part numbers for an 8-valve engine

All modern spark plugs, regardless of which company they are manufactured by or what features they have (for example, spark plugs with platinum elements), have a completely identical device.

Spark plugs VAZ 2114

They include components:

  • contact nut for high voltage wires;
  • insulator (heat-resistant ceramic);
  • a faceted metal insert on the insulator, used for unscrewing the spark plug with a key;
  • sealing ring;
  • lateral contact;
  • central contact.

Spark plug device

There should always be a working gap between the last two elements (for injectors - about 1 mm) - in this gap a high-voltage spark will jump, igniting the working mixture in the cylinder (a separate spark plug is installed for each engine cylinder).

As for the period after which it is necessary to replace spark plugs on a VAZ 2114, it is: about 10 thousand km for simple budget-level spark plugs, about 15-25 thousand km for simple spark plugs from “branded” manufacturers, about 70- 100 thousand km for platinum/iridium spark plugs.

Replacing spark plugs on VAZ 2113, VAZ 2114, VAZ 2115

Welcome! Spark plugs - in all frets there are only four of them, in some cars high-voltage wires coming from the distributor are connected to them (Carburetor cars), in some cars these wires are also connected to them, but coming from the ignition module (Injection 8 valve engines) and in some there are no high-voltage wires at all, and instead of them there is one ignition coil for each spark plug (these are 16 valve engines), usually difficulties arise with such engines, the owners sometimes have no idea how to change spark plugs in such an engine, but this is done very easily and in this article we will teach you how to do this in every engine that was installed on the Samara 2 family, and as you know, quite a few engines were installed on them, starting from an 8-valve carburetor and ending with a 16-valve engine with a distributed injection system (In other words, an injector).
Note! To carry out work on replacing spark plugs in an engine, you will need: Be sure to have a spark plug wrench (When you buy it, tell the seller for which engine you are buying the key for, because on 16 valve engines, the spark plug wrench comes with a completely different and different type), and so A screwdriver and a wrench can also come in handy in order to remove the negative terminal from the battery, thereby protecting yourself and the car from a short circuit!

Summary:

Where are the spark plugs located? If you have an 8 valve engine, then the spark plugs are located in the side of the cylinder block and they are screwed straight into the combustion chamber, see the second photo below for more details, in 16 valve engines everything is a little different, no wires as we already said to the spark plugs does not work, you will need to immediately look for coils there (All four coils are indicated by arrows in photo 1), under these coils there are spark plugs that must be replaced from time to time.

When should you change spark plugs? It all depends on the operation of the engine, if the engine is very worn out or if the ignition is set incorrectly and detonation occurs from time to time, then in this case the spark plugs are much more likely to be replaced, or during detonation they are destroyed (What is detonation, read the article: “Detonation that occurs over time from time in a car engine") and by the way, it will no longer be possible to restore them, unlike if the engine runs normally and without interruptions, just when everything works ideally, a coating forms on the spark plugs only from time to time, which can be removed by sandblasting and then the spark plugs will be like new, if you live in a big city then search on the Internet, maybe someone is doing this for a very low price, after sandblasting the spark plug it will literally be like new and it can still be used in your car for a long time.

Note! The frequency of replacing spark plugs is about 10-20 thousand km. If they are clogged, the car will obviously drive worse, and it will also be difficult to start in cold weather (the spark will be weak) and most importantly, due to severely worn spark plugs, the car may get up and not go anywhere else, as a rule, this is a rare case, you just change them on time and everything will be fine, but the fact that there is no spark on the spark plugs can be due to various factors in which either the ignition system or the module is to blame, or one of the four coils!

Angular

When creating an assortment of such models, there are: domestic and foreign approaches. The first type of model (domestic), often called “humpbacked”, has profiles of different sizes on both sides of the tool, such as an open-end wrench. At the same time, the length of the sides hardly differs, and there is simply no passage cavity.

The foreign approach is that keys are made with the same profile sizes on both sides. In this case, the long and short sides of the key are clearly drawn. The short part of the tool in most cases has a through hole, which allows this side to be used for working with fastening joints on long studs. As a rule, working profiles differ in the number of edges; twelve-sided is often used on the short side, and hex-sided on the long side of the key. The picture shows the use of this model in hard-to-reach places.

How to replace spark plugs on a VAZ 2113-VAZ 2115?

8 Valve engines:

Everything is very simple on them, besides this you can also see whether there is a spark in the spark plug or not, which is very convenient when the car stalls, in general, let’s start by immediately warning you which injection system is not important at all (The injection system can be injection and carburetor on our cars) , everything is done in the same way, first remove the minus terminal from the battery (How to remove the terminal from the battery, read the article: “Replacing the battery on a car”), after this is done, disconnect one wire from the first spark plug (Wire is indicated by the arrow) and unscrew it , in its place, immediately screw in another (New) one and connect a wire to it, and so go through all four spark plugs, when they are changed, install the terminal on the battery and start the car, the engine should start the same way as before or even a little better and faster (Due to the fact that the spark passes better through the new electrodes of the spark plugs), during its operation there should not be any extraneous sounds that were not previously present, everything should work clearly and without interruptions, in addition, in places where high-voltage wires cling to the spark plugs, there should not be sparks and a spark in general should not pierce the wires, otherwise install them better on spark plugs or replace them with new ones.

16 Valve engines:

Everything is very simple on them, too, but there is one big drawback, you won’t be able to see the spark and understand whether it is there or not, but if you take 8 valves, then everything is simple, if the car doesn’t start, you unscrew any one spark plug and connect it to it wire, after which the spark plug is brought to ground and the car starts, thus you can immediately understand whether there is a spark or not and you already know that the problem is in the ignition, on 16 valves usually if it doesn’t start you can blame a lot of things, the fuel system, for sensors and so on, everything in it is checked using a computer and a diagnostic connector, so such cars are more sophisticated and, unlike carburetor cars, trying to make a car yourself and sit down and drive is unlikely to work, let’s return closer to the topic, replace the spark plugs with 16 valve machines as follows, at the beginning, in the same way, the on-board network is de-energized by removing the minus terminal from the battery, then the bolt is unscrewed (the bolt for securing one coil is indicated by an arrow for clarity, and the outermost coil is indicated by a blue arrow, otherwise it is hard to see in the photo) securing one of any coils and the coil is removed from the hole in which it is located, when it is removed, a special spark plug wrench is taken for 16 valve cars and the spark plug is turned out with it (see. small photo) and it is also removed from the hole, replaced with a new one and the new one is installed in the reverse order; do not forget to install the coil on it, too, do the other three spark plugs in the same way.

The best spark plug wrenches are hinged type

In fact, the most popular spark plug wrenches are hinged ones. They are extremely convenient to use, but there are a huge number of cheap keys on the market with uncomfortable handles. The fact is that if the spark plug gets stuck (for example, because it was overtightened), then it will be very difficult to unscrew it with such a cheap key.

The spark plug wrenches in our top have a comfortable handle and are extremely reliable, tested personally.

AVTOVAZ instructions for replacing spark plugs and coils on a VAZ engine

According to the regulations, replacement of spark plugs on VAZ engines of front-wheel drive LADA cars is provided every 30 thousand km. mileage How to replace spark plugs and individual ignition coils (IIC) with your own hands is described in the factory’s technological instructions.

1. Unscrew bolts 4, Figure 5, and disconnect ignition coils 5 from spark plugs 6 (replaceable Torx E8 head, wrench).

2. Remove the spark plugs (spark plug key 16).

1. Install spark plugs 6, Figure 5, and tighten with a torque of 20…30 N∙m (2.0…3.0 kgf∙m) (replaceable high head 16, extension, wrench, torque wrench).

2. Before installing the ignition coils, apply lubricant type NIINP-233 TU 38.101687 1 mm thick to the inner surface of the rubber seal of the spark plug. The consumption rate is 1 g per engine.

3. Install ignition coils 5, tighten with fastening bolts. The tightening torque of the ignition coil mounting bolt is 4…8 N∙m (0.4…0.8 kgf∙m) (replaceable Torx E8 head, extension, wrench, torque wrench).

How to tighten a spark plug with the required torque without a torque wrench

experts from the magazine “Behind the Wheel” said:

1. Tighten the spark plug by hand until the washer touches the wall.

2. Tighten the new spark plug by 200-220 degrees or tighten the previously installed spark plug (the ring is already crimped) by about 30 degrees.

Straight

In the past, a very popular type of tool, but today they are increasingly being replaced by prefabricated devices (heads, extensions, adapters, etc.). But at the same time, at various points they still remain a convenient tool. In most cases, such a tool is double-sided, but there are options with a working profile on one side, used specifically for replacing spark plugs. A model with two working profiles on both sides usually has profiles of different sizes, usually adjacent values in the size range. Small-sized models (8 mm x 10 mm) are widely used. Such keys have a fairly cheap price. A socket wrench and socket heads, unlike this type of wrench, do not have an internal passage part in the body, into which not only a pin can fit, but also the upper part of a sensor, spark plugs, etc. Also, each model in its design has a hole for the drive, usually for a knob. We recommend using special wrenches.

When is it time to replace the spark plug?

The operating interval of one set of spark plugs is usually designed for fourteen to twenty thousand kilometers. Although, the deadlines that manufacturers set are much longer - thirty thousand kilometers. Perhaps such a significant difference in numbers was due to the large number of counterfeit products on the modern auto parts market. And, nevertheless, if you trust the opinion of experienced car owners, then it is better to carry out the replacement procedure early rather than late. What troubles can they bring in used condition:

  • Gasoline consumption will increase significantly.
  • The cost of operating a car will increase.
  • Starting a cold engine will become difficult and take a long time.
  • There will be misfires.
  • Engine operation will no longer be stable.

Helpful advice: often thrifty drivers put off buying and replacing spark plugs. This is mainly done for reasons of economy. But, as you already know, when they are heavily worn, gasoline consumption increases significantly and visits to the gas station become more frequent. Don't get carried away by the illusion of savings; replace regularly.

If your car has managed to accumulate an impressive mileage on one set of spark plugs, and the car’s traction has begun to weaken, then your VAZ 2114 needs to replace the spark plugs.

Is there a difference in brands and manufacturers?

There is a difference and it is significant. Before buying new spark plugs, you should once again look at the car’s operating instructions and check which marking is suitable for your car. On a VAZ 2114, replacement of spark plugs can be from either a domestic or an imported manufacturer. For carburetors with contact ignition, the A17DV spark plug will fit with a gap of 0.5 millimeters. For carburetors with a contactless system, the same is suitable, but with a gap of 0.7 millimeters. For those with injectors, the A17DV-10 at 1.3 millimeters is more suitable.

The best spark plug wrenches "head" type

Essentially, this is a regular socket for any 1/2 or 3/8 ratchet wrench, but with a longer body than a regular 14, 16 or 21 mm socket.

In first place is a domestic product under the Delo Tekhniki brand with a magnetic fastener at a very reasonable price.

In second place is the Berger VG2021 spark plug head with a polyurethane retainer. A reliable tool, but there is a possibility of running into a fake.

In third place is the OMBRA head with a rubber retainer. This particular model has been tested by time - the elastic began to fly off only after prolonged use. This ailment was easily corrected with the help of ordinary sealant. This model also came in 3rd place due to the fact that it is thin-walled and polished.

Replacement procedure

  1. We turn off the engine and be sure to wait until it cools down;
  2. Raise the hood lid and fix it in the open position;
  3. If your engine capacity is 1.6 liters, then you will have to unscrew the fasteners and remove the plastic cover (owners whose engine capacity is below 1.6 liters do not face this procedure, because they do not have this plastic cover on their car);
  4. We pull out the high-voltage wires using the rubber caps;
  5. We remove the resulting dirt and carbon deposits with a brush;
  6. We unscrew the spark plug by placing a spark plug wrench on it;
  7. We repeat the same steps with the remaining old candles;
  8. The new spark plug should be inspected again, the gap between its electrodes should be checked;
  9. First, we tighten the new part by hand, not with a tool, this will protect the thread from breaking if the installation suddenly turns out to be incorrect;
  10. We continue the twisting procedure, but with a tool;
  11. We reconnect the high-voltage wires we removed earlier (the explosive contacts should fit snugly in the spark plug).

Attention! A common mistake for novice car enthusiasts. Each spark plug has its own high-voltage wire. Under no circumstances should they be confused. The wire must be connected to the cylinder in series, following the marking rules.

You should not tighten the parts with special frenzy; their threads can be seriously damaged by rough forceful movements.

Replacing spark plugs on a VAZ 2114

The next step is to unscrew the spark plug using a spark plug wrench, usually a 16 or 21 socket wrench, depending on what spark plugs are installed on your car. Spark plugs are unscrewed only when the engine is stopped and cooled; if this rule is violated, there is a possibility of getting burned and damaging the threads. If even after the spark plug is “torn off” it continues to unscrew tightly, there is no need to rush, make a couple of turns in the opposite direction and try to carefully unscrew it again. This must be done so as not to damage the threads in the cylinder head under any circumstances. If the spark plug is difficult and tight to unscrew, this may be due to the fact that a large amount of soot has accumulated on its walls or rod.

So, when the spark plug is unscrewed, you can install a new, pre-prepared spark plug. Install and tighten it until your fingers begin to slip, then arm yourself with a spark plug wrench and tighten it, being vigilant and careful not to accidentally strip the thread. Excessive tightening of the spark plugs is fraught with damaged threads in the cylinder head, as well as subsequent problems with replacing spark plugs.

Progress

Before carrying out any work, you need to make sure that the engine has already cooled down. When replacing spark plugs, you should first remove the wire cap from the spark plug insulator. To make removal easy, it is recommended to swing the cap to the sides, pull it in the upper direction, and then finally remove it and put it to the side.

Next, the spark plug key prepared from the kit must be put on the spark plug. Using slight pressure while moving the part in a counterclockwise direction, it is necessary to unscrew it from the block head. With this approach, the part can be easily unscrewed. After this, you should carefully examine the part itself. Under normal operating conditions there will be no soot or oil marks on it. When replacing, it is recommended to select ignition elements whose characteristics are indicated in the technical manual for the car, for example, ngk.

Standards for sizing parts

After removing the old element, you must carefully screw the new part into the spark plug hole using clockwise turns. Using a spark plug wrench with the required parameters from the kit, screw the part into the block head with little force. It is important to observe the correct tightening torque. Fluctuations in tightening torque can lead to malfunctions, but correctly set torque will avoid problems. Next, you need to put the wire cap on the spark plug insulator.

When installing a new part, for example, ngk, it is necessary to correctly align its gap. This will allow you to make a special probe. The feeler gauge allows you to correctly determine the size of the gap. This is important because increased or decreased clearance will impair the functionality of the part. The probe has a set of hooks in its design. The hooks from the feeler gauge set allow you to correctly measure the gap. The size of the gap between the electrodes is strictly fixed, and the probe helps to determine inconsistencies. After measuring using a feeler gauge, you can adjust the gap as necessary.

After replacement

Unpleasant surprises can await car owners even after old ignition parts are replaced with new ones. This can happen if the store sold you a bad, faulty spark plug. In this case, the engine jerks and runs intermittently. Naturally, the defective part must be replaced again. And in order to determine which one is faulty, you will have to disconnect the explosives one by one. When the wire with a faulty spark plug is disconnected, no changes in engine operation are observed.

Replacing spark plugs on a VAZ 2114

How to replace spark plugs?

Before considering the question of how to change the spark plugs of a VAZ 2114, you should first talk about how this can be done? The answer here will be very simple - a spark plug wrench.

Spark plug keys for VAZ 2114

They are available in a variety of shapes, lengths and sizes of the working part. The most important thing to consider when purchasing this tool is the size of the VAZ 2114 spark plug wrench. It should be exactly 21 mm, no more, no less. All other characteristics, for example length, are not so important.

We can only say that many experienced car enthusiasts and car service workers advise not to save money and to purchase a more expensive key with a universal joint and a handle. It is much more convenient to use than a regular tubular wrench with holes for a wrench or screwdriver.

A type of spark plug key VAZ 2114

In addition to the spark plug wrench, you will also need a soft steel brush and a compressor (or a small can of compressed air).

The replacement procedure is performed in the following order (only on a completely cooled engine):

  1. Open the hood and remove the engine cover (if equipped).
  2. Remove the high voltage wires from the spark plugs.
  3. Clean both the spark plugs themselves and the surface around them with a soft brush and compressed air (so that when unscrewing, dirt does not fall into the spark plug wells).
  4. Use a spark plug wrench to unscrew the spark plugs (it’s best to just move them with a wrench and then unscrew them by hand - this will help avoid damaging the internal threads in the sockets).
  5. Take new spark plugs and check their clearance (it should be about 1 mm).
  6. Insert new spark plugs into place and tighten (at first - also by hand, with a key - only at the very end).
  7. Place the high-voltage wires onto the contact nut of the spark plugs.
  8. Put on the cover (if equipped) and close the hood.

The spark plugs should be replaced with new ones all at the same time. You should absolutely not replace only one or two spark plugs, even if the remaining ones seem to be “fully functional”.

What types of spark plug wrenches are there?

To make it easier for the master to decide which spark plug wrench is better, you need to familiarize yourself with all their varieties that are on sale:

  1. Articulated
    . This is the most popular device, which is very convenient to use, since the movable connection of the key on hinges allows you to better adapt to the location of the candle. A tubular spark plug wrench carefully dismantles the element and helps install a new one.

  2. T-shaped
    . Its design is more rigid than the previous type. And although it also has a hinge, it is installed at a slight angle of inclination. Due to its rigidity and strength, such a spark plug wrench can transmit great forces during operation. Many models are equipped with a magnet that keeps the candle from falling.

  3. Tubular
    . This is the simplest and most budget option. There is no hinge in this way, but it is driven by a simple crank that comes with it. The advantage of this device is the presence of two heads that have different diameters. This makes the tubular spark plug wrench more functional and versatile.

Spark plug size

To tighten the candles, use wrenches that differ in thread diameter. There are long and short spark plug keys. Depending on the situation, the master may need keys of the following sizes:

  1. 14 and 16 mm
    - they are used for repairing internal combustion engines of modern brands.
  2. 19 mm
    – used for motorcycle engines.
  3. 20.8 (21 mm)
    - standard key of the old European standard. Used in the repair of engines with two valves per cylinder. This model is useful for any Soviet passenger cars.
  4. 22 mm
    - used to replace old spark plugs on ZIS and ZIL vehicles.
  5. 24 mm
    - keys intended for spark plugs of the M8 brand.

Signs that it's time to replace spark plugs

The above figures are approximate and should not be strictly adhered to. Sometimes even a simple candle can last longer than its allotted time, but a “branded” one may turn out to be of poor quality and quickly fail.

Incorrect “minor repairs” of flooded spark plugs by calcination or cleaning using coarse sandpaper also greatly reduce the service life.

Taking all this into account, replacing spark plugs with new ones should be done not according to some digital indicators, but guided by the following signs of their wear:

  • the color of the electrodes is different from brown and does not change after cleaning (white color indicates overheating, black/dark brown indicates problems with fuel combustion);
  • there is practically unremovable plaque/carbon deposits on the electrodes;
  • if the metal shell of the insulator is painted a bright straw/golden color, then this brand of spark plugs is not suitable for this engine;
  • abundant traces of oil on the spark plug and in the well, reappearing after cleaning it;
  • chips of the ceramic shell of the insulator or damage to the metal lining.

If at least one (and even more so several) of the above signs are found on the spark plug, then it should be replaced as quickly as possible. In order to do this, you will need a new spark plug and a VAZ 2114 spark plug key (we’ll tell you what kind of key this is below).

What does the color of soot indicate?

When inspecting the electrode and thermal cone of the insulator of the old element, you should pay attention to the color of the carbon deposits. If black dry carbon is present, it can be concluded that the engine is being used at low speeds or idling. If the carbon is black in color and has an oily structure, we can talk about wear on the cylinders and piston rings, as well as an excessive oil level in the crankcase. If a part, for example an ngk, is operating under normal conditions, its insulator will be light gray or light brown. There is no soot in this case.

Which spark plugs to choose for the VAZ 2114 and how often should they be changed?

Most car enthusiasts and Samara owners are wondering how often spark plugs should be changed. Let's try to find the answer to this and many other questions regarding such an important element in the car as candles. They seem like small things that can fit in the palm of your hand, but the car won’t move without them.

Spark plug

WHAT ARE CAR CANDLES

A spark plug is a small part of a car engine that creates an electric spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture. Using a spark, it creates a mini-explosion in the cylinder, due to which the piston begins its movement. The number of such mini-fuzes in the engine is determined by the number of cylinders. Ordinary business class cars, and in particular VAZ 2114 cars, have four-cylinder engines, which means there are 4 units installed in it. But there are elite class cars or sports cars. They have six- to eight-cylinder internal combustion engines, respectively, 6-8 pieces are installed.

Let's look at the spark plugs for the VAZ Samara. As mentioned above, 4 pieces are installed in the VAZ internal combustion engine. Each consists of a nickel housing, a contact rod protected by a ceramic insulator. A spark occurs when the central and side electrodes come together.

It is important that all 4 candles work synchronously, which means they must be from the same manufacturer and the same brand, that is, from the same materials. It is not advisable to replace one or two spark plugs. If it’s time to change, then it’s better to have all 4 at once.

DEFECTS AND DAMAGE TO SPARK PLUGS

During operation, damage and defects may appear on the spark plugs. Sometimes they are the result of improper operation, sometimes due to the wrong brand of spark plugs. Defects on the spark plugs can also help diagnose engine problems. What will happen if you do not change the spark plugs when defects occur, you will learn from this section of the article. The brown color of the electrodes and the absence of damage indicate that the spark plugs are operating normally and you can continue driving.

Examples of defects and description:

  • The electrodes and housing are filled with oil. This defect indicates that the removable rings on the pistons are worn out and require replacement. It is the rings that allow oil to pass through, and the plugs filled with liquid spark irregularly and detonate. The engine needs to be repaired urgently. Dirty igniters must be washed from oil, dried and inspected. If there are no other defects, then they can be left for further use.
  • The electrode insulation is broken . You cannot drive with chipped insulation; you need to change the spark plugs, as they cause detonation in the engine.
  • Plaque on the surface of the body indicates low quality gasoline. It is necessary to change the gas station that sells the surrogate, and clean the spark plugs from deposits that prevent a spark from occurring, and you can continue to drive on them.
  • Overheating of the housing is indicated by white spark plugs or a worn out upper electrode. Ignition devices can overheat for two reasons:
  1. You use high-octane gasoline, which means you need to change its brand;
  2. The type of spark plugs is not suitable for your engine and therefore they also need to be replaced.
  • A lean mixture and the formation of carbon deposits inside the cylinders are indicated by the white color of the insulator with a smoky tint to the body and slightly melted electrodes.
  • Painting the body and contact in a golden or glossy color, as well as mechanical damage, indicate that this brand of spark plugs is not suitable for your engine. The last defect occurs due to the excessive length of the element. Incorrectly selected, long specimens can damage the piston. Therefore, they also need to be replaced.
