Why the speedometer on the Lada Kalina does not work: the main reasons and malfunctions

December 30, 2014 Lada.Online 125 745 62

The speedometer is designed to determine the instantaneous speed of a vehicle. If the speedometer does not work, then driving a car is prohibited by traffic rules. The article is devoted to solving the problem when the car speed needle is at zero, jumps and jerks randomly, or its readings are incorrect.

On Lada Granta, Lada Kalina (2nd and 1st generation) and Lada Priora cars, malfunctions in the speedometer are solved in similar ways.

Why the speedometer on the Lada Kalina does not work: the main reasons and malfunctions

You can often hear from Lada Kalina car owners that the speedometer has stopped working. The most common reason for this is a faulty speed sensor. As a result, the speedometer needle may jump on the scale or simply remain motionless. It may also freeze frequently.

In the video, replacing the speed sensor (this is the main breakdown):

Causes

In the vast majority of cases, the speedometer malfunction is caused by a breakdown of the speed sensor. Failure of the DS, in turn, can occur due to a leak in the seal. Repair

Without correct determination of the cause of the breakdown, repair is impossible. Therefore, once again make sure that you have carried out a thorough diagnosis.

To repair, in most cases it is necessary to remove the speed sensor. If it is the problem, first clean and dry it, then put it back in place and check it. In addition, it is recommended to carry out a test with a temporary connection of a working sensor.

Main symptoms and causes of failure

There are obvious discrepancies between the speedometer and tachometer, and besides, the car is driving at first speed!

This happens both while driving and when the car is simply standing still. For such a malfunction to make itself felt, it doesn’t matter how long the car has driven.

Also, in some cases, a sensor may light up, which indicates a malfunction of the power steering. It would seem that these malfunctions have nothing in common, but the speed of a car has been measured electronically for a long time.

Speed sensor

Thanks to electronics, the car can regulate the fuel supply itself. The sensor operates based on the Hall effect . It transmits rotation impulses from the wheel to the controller. If the car is coasting and the speed is no more than 20 km. hour, the system will automatically stop supplying fuel.

Various sensors can be installed on the Lada Kalina. They have the same seats, but are different from each other. In the event that a sensor on a car breaks down, it will be impossible to measure the speed of the vehicle. This will also affect the deterioration of engine performance.

Symptoms of a broken speed sensor

The sensor must be replaced if the following malfunctions occur:

  1. The speedometer needle jumps or freezes.
  2. Mileage does not count.

  3. Power steering does not work.
  4. The arrow that shows the fuel level in the tank (tank volume on a station wagon) jumps.
  5. The light comes on, indicating that the engine needs to be checked.

Repair methods

Inspecting the speed sensor connector

Another reason why the speed sensor does not work may be a wet connector. As a result, the contacts on it begin to oxidize. To avoid this, you need to cover the contacts with sealant.

Dirt deposits on the speed sensor, in this case it is also recommended to check the condition of the oil in the gearbox

It is also not recommended to immediately change the speed sensor when a malfunction is detected. Initially, it is necessary to identify the cause of the malfunction. Clean all contacts and check the device with a tester. Only after identifying the exact cause of the malfunction can it be changed.

Replacing the sensor

To change the speed sensor you do not need any special knowledge. Anyone can do this kind of work on their own. To do this you need:

  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Remove the air filter.
  3. Disconnect the wires.
  4. Unscrew the device mount.

Removing the speed sensor

Sometimes simply cleaning the contacts can help. In the case when the car has an eight-valve engine, the replacement is a little more complicated than with a 16-valve engine. In this case, you will also have to remove the corrugation that is attached to the filter. The sensor itself is located on the gearbox housing.

Failure of the speedometer itself (instrument panel)

The speed sensor may not always be the reason why the speedometer does not work. The reason may also be in the instrument panel. Here we must remember that it is impossible to repair it or replace some parts on it separately. They just change it completely.

Characteristic signs of device failure and its replacement

Lada Kalina is equipped with different sensors, but they all have the same seats. Sensors are marked with numbers:

When this sensor fails on a Lada Kalina or Lada Granta, the speed of the vehicle cannot be measured. This also causes deterioration in engine performance. Most often, a complete replacement of the sensor is required for the following faults:

  • when driving, the speedometer needle jumps or just lies quietly without moving;
  • The electric power steering stopped working;
  • the “check engine” light is on;
  • the speedometer does not count mileage;
  • The arrow indicating the fuel level twitches.

There are many reasons why the speedometer does not work. The first place is always a breakdown or failure of the speed sensor. Another reason could be a wet chip. Contacts begin to oxidize due to moisture. To protect the sensor, it is recommended to cover the top surface with sealant. When poor performance of the DS is detected, you should not immediately change it.

First you need to make a diagnosis. It is necessary to clean the contacts and test the device. If this does not help, you can proceed with replacement. Changing the element in question is quite simple. Any car enthusiast can handle this. Usually such work is completed in half an hour. To do this you need:

  • turn off the ignition;
  • remove the air filter;
  • disconnect the wires;
  • unscrew the nut securing the device;
  • attach the new device.

When the Lada Kalina is equipped with a 16-valve engine, the sensor is very easy to change. This operation will take a little time. If an eight-valve engine is installed, to replace the device it is necessary to remove the corrugation that is connected to the air filter.

Every car enthusiast knows well that car components are not always in perfect condition. Therefore, before installing a new part, you need to disconnect the wire block and check the condition of the contacts.

The sensor installed at the factory has a marking starting with the numbers 1118. However, since 2011, Lada Kalina began to be equipped with gearboxes that are installed on the Lada Priora. The marking in this case begins with different numbers, 2170. The built-in fuse that protects the electrical circuit of the installed instrument panel is designated F1. They will be equipped with a mounting block. When the fuse is lit, the speedometer stops working.

What to do if the speedometer does not work on the Lada Kalina

Speedometer is a device for determining the speed of a car. Manufacturers have moved away from using mechanical speedometers due to errors in speed calculations. They were made through a rotating cable. On modern cars, electromechanical devices are installed, where the calculation is done through the operation of electronics. The article examines the question of why the speedometer on the Lada Kalina does not work, sources of damage, and ways to eliminate them. Other problems that affect the operation of the speed counter will be described in detail.

Causes of tachometer malfunction

Most often, a sign of a broken meter is “inappropriate” needle behavior. If it freezes or twitches, you need to look for the source of the problem. In this case, it is worth repairing or replacing the device.

If the tachometer does not work, the “leading” functions of the car do not suffer. But experienced car owners warn that incorrect readings from the device do not allow timely identification of a problem with the engine. If you ignore this, there is a risk of facing the need for repairs or even installation of a new power unit.

If the tachometer does not work, the reasons may be the installation of silicone prototypes of the factory ignition wiring (the arrow twitches). This happens due to a change in the electric current pulse. To diagnose the problem, lower the resistor value on the transmission board. Also check the speed sensor - it may be transmitting erroneous data. And, of course, there is always the possibility of failure of the device itself.

The tachometer stopped working - possible reasons

Check the internal combustion sensor.

The revolutions may “go up” due to problems with the internal combustion sensor - then the indicator gives incorrect readings. If this is the problem, installing a new device will correct the situation.

Often a malfunction occurs due to a screen failure. To detect the problem, look at the LED display. If the numbers are not visible, install a new display.

And, of course, check the ground and voltage on the wires. Most often, such diagnostics are enough to identify the source of the problem.

Why the tachometer does not work on VAZ cars

Our cars are mainly equipped with mechanical odometers and speedometers (Audi, for example, have an electronic analogue), so there is a risk of the cable breaking. This breakdown is accompanied by a specific noise in the panel area. In this case, the device produces erroneous information.

In this case, you need to check the performance of the speed sensor by measuring the voltage. If everything is in order with the tested parameter, proceed to diagnosing the device itself.

In many cases, mechanical problems occur.

Try to disassemble the drive and deal with the problem yourself. An alternative option is to contact a car service center.

If there is no voltage, examine the electrical connections:

New car models often have built-in electronic meters that receive data from the speed sensor of the box. In this case, the cause of the breakdown may lie directly in the odometer (if so, a complete replacement of the “tidy” is necessary) or in the sensor.

On a VAZ, which is equipped with a carburetor engine, three wires are connected to the tachometer. One of them is connected to the coil terminal, and the others are connected to the power supply (“+” and “-”). In this case, to identify the source of the problem, the terminals are switched from the device to the battery. Next, start the engine. If the device does not work, the source of the malfunction must be sought in the ignition or in the device itself. If operation is correct, proceed to wiring diagnostics.

The injectors have four wires that go:

  • the first - to the ECU;
  • the second - to the crankshaft position sensor;
  • the third and fourth - to nutrition.

Only computer testing is possible here.

A person can only inspect and replace parts - it will not be possible to qualitatively analyze the operation of the system.

Tachometer malfunctions - finding the cause yourself

Use a multimeter and know the wiring diagram of your car.

It is better to take measurements with a multimeter. To operate, you must know how to use it. The “tester” makes it possible to measure power, “ground” and “ring” the main wire for a break.

Power measurements are carried out in DC mode (select a range within 20 Volts). In this case, “-” is always present, “+” appears after the ignition is activated. Ideally, the signal wire shows pulses while the crankshaft is rotating.

Breaks are looked for by setting the ohmmeter function on the multimeter. If the problem is in the contacts, move the harness/connector.

Is the tachometer not working properly? Sometimes this is due to design defects in the car. For example, it happens like this: the operation of a generator, when the current on the excitation winding is regulated by alternating voltage, is accompanied by “vibration” of the needle (typical of old VAZ cars). This defect can be corrected by changing the connection diagram or updating the dashboard.

Tachometer speed does not work - why does the needle “jump”

Here are some tips from experienced car owners:

  • look for the Check indicator (if there is no signal, self-diagnosis will not help);
  • check connections and voltage with a tester;
  • in case of parallel incorrect operation of other devices, test the “ground”;
  • inspect the distributor parts;
  • check the condition of the circuits;
  • If problems occur at high engine speeds, diagnose the switch.

If, as a result of repair work, the tachometer does not work well, adjustment is required (adjusting the “0” position and the unit, checking the quality of connections).

The tachometer on the instrument panel does not work? Replace it. In theory, this is not difficult, but it is better to find detailed video instructions in advance (select the option specifically for your engine - diesel or gasoline).

Before purchasing a unit, be sure to check its compatibility with the machine.

Principle of operation

Lada Kalina 1 and 2 series are equipped with speedometers similar in operating principle. Their operation is carried out by a speed sensor mounted in the gearbox. For cars of both series, this sensor is located near the right CV joint, next to the dipstick for measuring the oil level in the gearbox. During the rotation of the drive wheels, the EMF transmits electrical impulses to the ECU. Based on the pulse frequency, the calculation is transmitted from the on-board computer to the speedometer.

In addition to determining the speed, the fuel consumption of the machine depends on the operation of the EMF. The ECU calculates engine speed, thereby enriching the mixture with fuel and air as needed. The operation of the power steering also depends on this unit.

Classification by operating principle

  • Mechanical or electromechanical tachometers with direct drive. The revolutions are transmitted to the dial indicator through a flexible shaft, which, through a worm gear, receives rotation directly from the crankshaft or one of the transmission shafts. The operating principle of the indicator is based on the phenomenon of eddy current induction. The operation and design of a magnetic tachometer are extremely similar to the operating principle of a car speedometer. In modern cars, a similar tachometer design is not used.

  • Electric machine. A distinctive feature is the connection to a generator. It is used primarily on diesel engines, but for the purpose of unification, a device of this type can also be used on gasoline engines.
  • Electronic. The signal can be taken either from the ignition system or directly from the computer. Installed on gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines.

Design and principle of operation

Main components of electric machine and electronic tachometers:

  • measuring unit, or signal converter. It can be based on elements of analog circuitry or built using special microcircuits;
  • display unit with analogue or digital display of the number of revolutions;
  • auxiliary elements.

The operation of electronic tachometers is based on the conversion of individual signals or pulses captured from the computer, ignition system or generator into a signal “understandable” for the display unit.

Connection diagram

When looking for the reason why the tachometer does not work, it is first of all important to understand the connection diagram and the type of signal. There are 3 typical connection schemes:

  • to a contactless ignition system (the tachometer wire is connected to the primary circuit of the ignition coil). The operating principle is based on measuring the frequency of voltage surges in the primary circuit of the ignition system. Calculating the ignition angle is impossible without focusing on the number of crankshaft revolutions, therefore the sparking frequency directly depends on the crankshaft rotation speed. On 4-cylinder internal combustion engines, a full revolution of the crankshaft corresponds to 2 voltage pulses in the primary circuit. Accordingly, the higher the crankshaft rotation speed, the greater the frequency of voltage surges;

  • connection to the contact ignition system. The operating principle and connection diagram are similar to the BSZ, but the design of the measuring unit will differ depending on the voltage of the input circuit;

  • connection to the engine ECU. The principle of operation is still based on recording voltage pulses in the primary circuit of the ignition system, but the signal to the tachometer comes from the engine control unit;

  • connection to the generator (the tachometer signal contact is connected to terminal W of the generator). The rotation of the generator pulley is carried out by a belt drive from the crankshaft, so the rotation speed of the generator rotor will always be proportional to the crankshaft speed. The change in the number of revolutions of the crankshaft can be calculated by constantly measuring the amount of EMF generated on the winding. According to its principle of operation, an electric machine tachometer resembles a regular one class=”aligncenter” width=”448″ height=”412″[/img]

Typical faults

If the mechanical tachometer on a car stops working, there is mechanical damage to any of the structural elements. A broken cable of a flexible shaft, wear of the worm gear elements, the appearance of backlashes, deformations - all these reasons can cause the engine speed indicator to fail.

What to pay attention to if the electronic tachometer does not work:

  • integrity of electrical wiring. In this case, it is important to check not only the signal wire, but also the ground and power supply of the instrument panel;
  • quality of contacts. The presence of oxides and loose contact inside the chips may well cause the tachometer to fail;
  • the integrity of the elements of the measuring unit, which are located behind the protective glass inside the dashboard. Among mechanical damage to transistors, burnout of microcircuits, tracks or swelling of resistors, the most common reason for a non-working tachometer is a violation of solder integrity. For example, on the Mitsubishi Padjero II, the appearance of microcracks in the soldering areas of the tachometer elements is a generally recognized disease.

On vehicles with an alternator connection, a non-functioning tachometer may indicate a faulty alternator. In this case, the breakdown is accompanied by the lighting of the low battery charge indicator and the sporadic lighting of a “garland” of warning lights on the dashboard.

Symptoms of a problem

Many factors can indicate that the speed sensing device is damaged. The dashboard indicators will display the following error codes:

  • P0500 signals that the supply of electrical impulses from the sensor has stopped;
  • P0503 notifies of intermittent pulses from the sensor.
  • Check Engine indicates interruptions in the operation of the power unit.

A faulty part can be determined by a non-functioning speedometer.

  1. When moving, the arrow jumps chaotically. The reason for this lies in interruptions in the transmission of EMF pulses.
  2. The arrow does not respond to an increase in speed. Complete absence of signals. The source of the problem is poor electrical wiring contact.
  3. The fuel gauge needle moves irregularly. Occurs due to a failure in fuel calculation. Readings from the EMF are calculated and transmitted to the fuel distribution sensor. For example, at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, the fuel supply is reduced. This was done by the manufacturer itself to reduce consumption. Incorrect EMF readings introduce an error in the calculation of fuel consumption.
  4. The odometer stops working. This counter is directly dependent on the speedometer. It also works from ECU readings based on the speed of rotation of the drive wheels.
  5. The power steering stops functioning.

EMF damage can be determined by the behavior of the power unit.

  1. Fuel consumption increases.
  2. Speed increases unstably when accelerating.
  3. Significant reduction in power.

All these reasons will require urgent diagnostics of the speed sensor for operability.

Signs

A speedometer malfunction will manifest itself almost identically not only for Lada cars, but also for other cars. The main signs by which you can almost unmistakably recognize a device breakdown:

  • The speedometer needle constantly points to zero, jerks erratically or freezes;
  • the same thing can happen with the arrow showing the fuel level;
  • the speed of the car cannot be changed;
  • the device turns off while driving;
  • cravings have disappeared or decreased significantly;
  • the power steering indicator lights up for no reason (in this case the steering wheel becomes too heavy or, on the contrary, light);
  • fuel consumption has increased;
  • the odometer gives incorrect information about the kilometers traveled;
  • the light is on indicating the need to check the engine;
  • reduction in power, as well as uneven idling until the engine switches itself off (while poor performance in other modes often has a different reason).

Examination

A common malfunction in the transmission of electronic signals is a disruption in the electrical circuit. Kalina frets series 1 and 2 are equipped with sensors with poor contact protection from moisture. To check, you need to disconnect the sensor from the electrical circuit by simply disconnecting the plug from the socket. For 8 valve vehicles, the sensor is located under the bellows of the air filter. It will have to be dismantled. To check, you will need a tester and a simple screwdriver. Next you need:

  1. Connect the “+” probe of the tester to the pulse contact “2” of the connector. He is central.
  2. Connect the “minus” of the tester to the engine housing.
  3. Set the tester to DC voltage measurement mode.
  4. Rotate the sensor rod.
  5. Monitor the tester readings.

The operation of the device will be indicated by an increase in voltage. It should vary from 0.5 to 12 volts. During constant rotation, there should be no interruptions in the supply of impulses. If this happens, you should simply clean the contact socket from dirt and oxidation and repeat the test.

The cause of a malfunction of the speed sensor may be its depressurization at the landing site. Occurs due to large shaking if the part was poorly secured earlier. You just need to dismantle the device, replace the rubber o-ring and secure the part with a “22” key.

Removal and installation instructions

Before changing the DS, you should first carry out a number of preventive actions that can eliminate the malfunction:

  • clean the contacts: they may have oxidized;
  • Clean the pad, which may have gotten dirty.

The sensor should also be removed, cleaned and checked for functionality.

The check can be performed in three ways:

  1. Using a multimeter. The positive wire of the removed DC must be connected to the central contact, and the negative wire must be leaned against the body of the car. If the DC is exposed to slight vibration, the readings on the tester should fluctuate from 0.5 to 10 V.
  2. To check the second method, the device does not need to be removed from the gearbox. You should hang the front wheel, then start rotating it and attach a multimeter in the same way as the first method. If after connection the tester changes readings, then the device is working properly.
  3. If you don't have a multimeter, you can use a 12 V test light in the socket. The minus must be connected to the signal contact of the DC, and the plus must be connected to the battery. When the light comes on, it indicates that the device is working properly.

Dismantling

To check the integrity of the rod, you will have to remove the part from its seat. Next, the rod itself is checked. There should be no free play, distortions, or “eaten” edges of the rod.

Replacement

If the cause of poor pulse transmission is not dirty contacts, the speed sensor will have to be replaced. For this you will need:

  1. Loosen the air filter bellows clamp.
  2. Remove the corrugation.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Using a size 22 wrench, unscrew the sensor. This is done extremely carefully so as not to tear off the plastic edges of the part.
  5. Remove the part from the mounting location.
  6. Clean the EMF installation site from dirt.
  7. Secure the new unit and assemble the remaining components in exactly the reverse order.

Attention! Lada Kalina cars were equipped with various modifications of the EMF. Replacement must be made only with a completely identical option.

Instructions for replacing the device yourself

Replacing the drive on Kalina is simple, you need to perform the following steps:

Using a wrench, unscrew the screw securing the device to the gearbox. Next, use a screwdriver to carefully pry the hole and remove the speedometer. At the next stage, the removed drive should be inspected for defects and contamination.

It is also necessary to check the seat and clean it of dirt. When inspecting, pay attention to the gearbox. If oil stains are found, the O-ring must be replaced. We install the repaired or new speedometer in its original place. We assemble the drive in the reverse order of removal.

Removing the pointer from the panel

Other damage

If, after installing a new sensor, the speedometer on the Lada Kalina still does not work, the reason must be sought in the electrical circuit of this device.

Bad "0"

To determine whether the speedometer is in poor contact with the vehicle's ground, it is necessary to dismantle the device itself. After dismantling, you will notice that a black wire enters the speedometer housing and is connected to the frame. This wire is secured to the frame using an “8” bolt.

  1. Unscrew the bolt.
  2. Clean the contact itself and its connection with sandpaper.
  3. Screw the wire contact into place.
  4. Check the speedometer operation.

A break in the negative wire can only occur after a poor-quality replacement of the speedometer. You cannot connect a broken wire with simple twisting. If the problem persists, you should pay attention to the vehicle's safety unit.

Fuse

A 10-amp fuse is responsible for protecting the speedometer from electrical surges. In the safety block it is designated “F1” and is located first in the row. Its malfunction will be indicated by the complete absence of speedometer lighting. Next you need:

  1. Remove the fuse from its socket.
  2. Set the multimeter to beep mode.
  3. Connect both multimeter probes to the fuse terminals.

If there is no sound signal, this indicates a faulty speedometer fuse. It is worth remembering that the replacement must be made with a similar sample, marked “10A”. Fuses of a lower rating will often blow out or lead to the passage of excess voltage into the electronic circuit of the device. It is also prohibited to screw jumper wires onto the fuse.

The check can be carried out visually. The transparent fuse housing allows you to see the condition of the jumper wire.

If, after checking the electrical circuit, replacing the sensor and fuse, the speedometer on Kalina does not work, then it is completely out of order. This device cannot be repaired and there are no spare parts for it. Will have to replace it with a similar model.

Recommendations for replacing the speed sensor on Kalina

Do not rush to change the sensor immediately; it is quite possible that the contacts have oxidized or dirt has gotten into the block. You can also clean the sensor itself and reinstall it. Different versions of Kalina may have different sensors:

All the above sensors are interchangeable! They are suitable for Kalina 1117, 1118 and 1119 cars with 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines. The speed sensor from Priora is physically suitable, but it cannot be installed, as it shows incorrect values.

One of the many “diseases” of the Lada Kalina car is problems with the speedometer on the dashboard; sometimes it simply does not work. Messages regularly appear on forums - “why the speedometer on the viburnum does not work”, today we will look at the main reasons for the malfunction of this unit in the car.

The most common reason for a non-working speedometer on a Lada Kalina car, as it turns out from Internet forums, is a failure of the speed sensor

. There are several signs of this problem. The speedometer needle can lie at 0, not moving at all, but sometimes it jumps like a mountain goat.

Sometimes it freezes, and it doesn’t matter to it whether the car is moving or not. It also happens that the ESD warning light comes on, but this only applies to those Lad Kalinas where electric power steering is installed

Drivers who find themselves in this situation cannot yet understand why this happens, because the steering wheel and the speedometer are two different things.

The failure of the speed sensor occurs due to the leakage of its housing

. As a result, water or oil begins to get inside. The sensor is located on the gearbox housing, not far from the left inner CV joint. From under the hood, on 16 valve engines, it can be easily removed and a new one installed. It will take no more than 5 minutes. But on 8 valve engines, in order to get to it, you will have to remove the corrugation coming from the air filter. But, unfortunately, spare parts are not always supplied with serviceable sensors, and they have to be sorted out. Before replacing the sensor, unclip the wire block that goes to the sensor and check the condition of the contacts.

Let us recall that in the previous article we looked at how to install fog lights on a Grant with your own hands. Be careful, there is a very scrupulous process for connecting the PTF.

If the sensor was original, then be sure to look at its markings, it should start with the first four digits 1118, but in 2011 they began installing gearboxes from Priora on Kalina. On these boxes, the speed sensor marking will begin with the numbers 2170. The electrical circuit of the instrument panel is protected by a fuse designated F1, it is installed in the mounting block. If it fails, the speedometer will not work.

In addition to the speed sensor, fuse F1 and wire connection blocks, the speedometer malfunction on the Lada Kalina may also be in the instrument panel

. It is supplied as spare parts only in a complete set. But if you decide to replace the shield, first check the fastening of the ground wire coming from it. Maybe this is the cause of the malfunction.

Although the design of the speedometer is entirely based on electronics, malfunctions that arise during its operation can be eliminated by the driver himself.

I had this, you can remove the tidy, remove the protection from it, well, the needles are balanced there, if it falls off, then put it in place and that’s it.
Oleg:
my father had this, the car traveled 2800 km and the needle also jumped, then lay still, then started jumping again!
here 1st maintenance came up, it turned out to be a tourniquet! We disassembled the harness and it turned out that 1 wire had come loose, replaced it and everything was fine! They will replace it under warranty! I also thought the speed sensor turned out to be simple! Andrey:
well, in short, it’s a speed sensor.
can be changed simply, costs 450 rubles or under warranty, fails due to moisture or oil getting into it.

Accessories

Over the years, on cars of 2 series, speed sensors of various modifications were installed on Kalina. They differ only in appearance. The factory EMF marking for the original gearbox begins with the digital designation 1118. If a Lada Priora gearbox is installed on Kalina, the EMF marking will begin with the numbers 2170. This is not so important. Original speed sensors are marked with article numbers: 1118-3843010-04, 1118-3843010-02, 1118-3843010. One of the most common faults is replacing a faulty EMF with a non-original analogue. The analogue operating from the gearbox does not transmit accurate data or its drive breaks down.

Lada Kalina Universal My car › Logbook › Speedometer does not show speed and something else

Good afternoon to everyone reading the logbook! Today I figured out a problem that reappeared a year after it first appeared and was cured. Then I didn’t even write in the logbook. What happened the first time: The speedometer needle began to “float”, i.e. move independently regardless of speed. It started after washing the engine compartment with diligence with a high pressure washer. After reading the Internet, it was found that the reason for the “floating” speedometer needle is a glitch in the speed sensor.

During washing, water entered the terminal block through the inlet holes for the wires. Using a 10 mm socket wrench, I unscrewed one nut and pulled out the sensor. It had no external damage, but there was dirt inside the recess with the contacts. This liquid dirt shortened 3 contacts and the speedometer did not work correctly (note that it worked!) How to remove dirt from the recess?

There's not much space there. I tried as much as I could, but it didn’t help, the dirt doesn’t come off completely. I took a high pressure washer and washed the dirt out of there. It dried out a little inside, I installed the old speed sensor in place and connected the terminal block to it. The problem disappeared and I decided that there was NO NEED to WASH THE UNDER-HOOD SPACE WITH A HIGH PRESSURE WASHER.

I drove around happily for about a year, but the problem returned. This time the speedometer simply stopped showing speed. And after some time after starting to move, at low speeds the electric booster turned off or simply gave such force that it was difficult to turn the steering wheel (as at high speed). In addition, the “Check Engine” indicator came on and after checking through the bluetooth adapter I saw the error “fault in the speed sensor circuit”, I don’t remember what code, 500 or 501 or something. And if anyone needs it, the mileage readings have stopped adding up. But this time I didn’t pour water into the sensor! I thought that I must have driven into a puddle and flooded the terminal block. I took it off and it was damp inside. I washed it, dried it, put everything back together, but the speedometer still doesn’t work. I looked inside the terminal block with the wires, and there one contact broke off. I bought a “Repair kit - Speed sensor block 1117,1118,1119 CARGEN” for 90 rubles (now it costs a little more). This is a terminal block and a tail of 3 wires 10 cm each. I soldered a new terminal block instead of the old one, and filled the holes for introducing wires into the terminal block with sealant - so that water did not get inside the terminal block (as in the first case of repair). I went for a ride and the speedometer didn’t work again! Well, I think now the speed sensor is definitely screwed up, it’s time to buy a new one. I bought it for 360 rubles. the same gray, Priorovsky. Only I had 2170-3843010-04 and I bought 2170-3843010-02 - i.e. different manufacturer. The sensor is new, the terminal block is new, but the problem is old
