New service fluid will also be needed.
As gear oil, you should use the brand of lubricant that is noted in the Geely CK service manual. Many experts agree that boxed grease 75W-90 is ideal for this car. Please note that if the manual states that it is recommended to pour 75W-90 semi-synthetic into the box, then in this case it is unacceptable to use mineral oil. But it is quite possible to use a completely synthetic service fluid.
Experienced owners of Geely SK praise CASTROL Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 gear oil.

It is designed for a hexagon for unscrewing. In the center of the front of the box, if you also look directly at the car, there is a filler plug for the box.
Since the drain plug of the box is located almost under the subframe, unscrewing it using an ordinary hexagon will be somewhat problematic. To make this work easier, we recommend shortening the bent part of the hexagon by literally one or one and a half centimeters. Engine oil is drained from the engine from the drain plug, which is located at the bottom of the crankcase.
You can also see the gearbox filler plug on the top right.
How to change the oil in a Geely mk automatic transmission
This is actually the case if the car is used moderately and after a few kilometers, that is, after years of operation, the clutch will need to be replaced. After repairing the clutch, new transmission oil is poured into the gearbox. If the car is not in use, it is still better to change the oil when it reaches age.
Unfortunately, due to the incorrect color rendering of the video camera, the grayish tint that the drained transmission oil has is not visible. After changing the oil, I did not notice that any noise disappeared and gear shifts began to change better.

How to change the oil in a Geely sk gearbox
The Geely CK car can use several types of transmission:
Mechanical gearboxes are maintenance-free. The manufacturer fills the gearbox at the factory using high-quality synthetic oil. Factory refilling of the transmission is enough for approximately 150,000 (km) mileage or 5 years of operation.
Regarding the automatic transmission, the automatic transmission in the Geely CK (Otaka) car is serviceable. That is, a transmission with an automatic transmission has a full-fledged dipstick and a traditional drain plug. And if you unscrew the oil pan of an automatic transmission, you will have access to the filter element, which must be changed every time the automatic transmission is serviced.
It is recommended to update the oil in a Geely SK automatic transmission as the lubricant gets dirty, this could be at 20,000, 40,000, 60,000 or 80,000 (km). Each automatic transmission service case is unique; you need to pay attention to the color of the automatic transmission oil, the presence of suspension and other parameters.
It is worth noting separately that automatic transmissions are serviced only in a specialized service center, where it is possible to change the oil automatically, that is, with flushing and under pressure. This review will cover how to manually change the oil in a manual transmission.

What kind of oil should I put in a Geely Mk box?
If the manual transmission was not noisy before, then it is better to change the oil after some mileage to semi-synthetic GL-4. If it was noisy, then you can drive as is. In this car, the manual transmission bearings are often replaced with non-original ones in order to get rid of the noise. It didn't make any noise before. When the oil was changed from the factory, according to the documents it was 80w90! It didn't smell like anything special to me.
So I’m thinking, maybe I should take semi-synth Castrol 80w90 GL. Have I seen something that I didn’t take right away?! Obviously it will fit better? Or semi-synth 75w90?
What kind of oil should I put in the Geely MK Cross manual transmission?
In my manual it is written: But they don’t change the oil in the box once a season. Thank you! For winter, 75W is still more suitable, but if there were no problems with 80W oil, then it is better to fill it with this. I am the second owner, I bought the car recently, I haven’t used it in winter yet. I live where there is almost no frost.
Not long in winter - well, very rare. Judging by the table, the semi-synth is 80W at the most. By the way, experts now advise adding “anti-noise” additives to synthetic gearboxes. But I am somehow suspicious of the production of such “cocktails”. I think it's better to change.
Usually all the necessary additives are in the oil itself.

Oil change interval
Since we are talking about a car manufacturer from the Middle Kingdom, you should not count on long-term operation without service.
Even the factory manual states that the recommended interval between gearbox oil changes is 40 thousand kilometers.
But the actual gap is even smaller. Experienced car owners suggest that if you buy a Geely MK, you will need to change the transmission fluid approximately every 20 - 30 thousand kilometers. This is the optimal period, since factory oil cannot withstand high and medium loads for a long period.
If you just purchased a car from a showroom, then it is better to change the oil on this Chinese sedan no later than after 5 thousand kilometers. Carry out all subsequent replacements of consumable fluid at intervals of 20 - 30 thousand kilometers.
But be careful when checking the level and condition of the oil in the crankcase. If malfunctions occur or signs of wear are detected before the specified period, it is necessary to perform an unscheduled lubricant change and check the unit itself for malfunctions. Premature loss of the physical and chemical properties of the transmission fluid indicates possible gearbox failure. A simple oil change will not help here. First you need to identify the problem and then fix it.
Automatic transmission oil GILI MK
GEELY MK gearbox oil guarantees proper lubrication to all components of this system and protects them from mechanical friction, which causes their premature wear. In the Avtomania online store you will find automatic transmission and gearbox oils exclusively from the world's leading manufacturers, of high quality, completely free of impurities, with the proper degree of viscosity and temperature stability. And don’t forget that the durability of one of the most expensive components of the car will depend on what kind of oil you pour into the automatic transmission of the GILI MK!
Oil selection
The next question that most car owners are interested in is what kind of oil to pour into the Geely MK box. It makes no sense to ask about factory oil here.
During the production of this car, like other Gili models, frankly bad and probably cheap gear oil is poured. There is no need to look for it, since it does not suit this car at all.
But the lubricant must meet the recommended specifications. The instruction manual states that the fluid is selected with a viscosity of 75W90 and according to API classification 4. This is the optimal combination of characteristics that can perform well during the service of the gearbox.
For automatic transmissions, choose Dexron II and Dexron III. But it is not advisable to deviate from these recommendations. Oils with these characteristics are well suited to automatic transmissions, so there is no need to look for an alternative.
Fill automatic and manual transmissions exclusively with synthetic oils. On semi-synthetic and mineral compositions, the behavior of the boxes will be unpredictable.
In its operating manual, the plant indicates that if non-compliant fluids are used in gearboxes, the following problems may occur:
- vibrations;
- incorrect gear shifting;
- damage to an automatic transmission or manual transmission element;
- box failure.
Don’t take risks, just choose high-quality formulations from trusted oil manufacturers. These include:
- Kendall;
- Motul;
- Castrol;
- Nanoprotec Gear Oil;
- Hundert;
- Lukoil TM-4;
- Shell;
- Elf;
- Mobile 1.
The main thing is that the gear oil meets the viscosity requirements and API class. Otherwise, the Geely MK is not a very demanding machine, so it can work effectively on any high-quality oil.
Lukoil TM-4 proven oil for filling in Geely MK
Choosing oil for Geely MK
Transmission oil is divided into:
- mineral;
- semi-synthetic;
- synthetic.
Synthetic oil has been recognized as high-quality and reliable for decades. It's expensive, but worth the money. Under no circumstances should synthetic oil fluid be mixed with other types.
Manufacturer Geely MK recommends filling the transmission with oil fluid with the following parameters:
- API4 classification;
- viscosity: 75 W-90.
Basically, Geely MK owners use Mobile 1 and Shel brand oils.

This has a positive effect on how much oil you have to buy for Gili MK. If your Chinese car is equipped with an automatic transmission, 3.2 liters of lubricant will be required to refill it. When draining the waste, the entire volume does not come out; part of it remains inside the system. But it is recommended to buy a 4-liter canister. This will allow you to leave some of the lubricant for periodic topping up until the next complete fluid change.
In the case of a manual transmission, the oil sump volume is even smaller. This includes from 2.1 to 2.25 liters of oil according to the official manual and the technical characteristics specified therein. When replacing the composition in the box with your own hands, buy liquid with a reserve.

Step-by-step procedure for changing oil in a manual transmission
Procedure for draining old oil from a vehicle:
- The vehicle is placed on a flat surface on a pit or lift.
- The left engine splash guard is removed.
- The inspection hole plug is cleaned and unscrewed. It is necessary to make sure that the gearbox crankcase is completely filled with motor oil to the required level. If it is not enough, the liquid needs to be added.
- A pre-prepared container is inserted and the drain plug is turned out.
- After draining the oil liquid for 10-15 minutes, the drain plug is screwed back on.
- If there is debris in the oil fluid, it is necessary to clean the pan cover. To do this, unscrew the tray cover. The residual motor oil is drained and cleaned with a metal brush. The pallet is installed back.
- There is a filler hole next to the drain hole. The oil liquid is filled in using a syringe to the control mark.
- The control and filling hole plug is wiped dry and screwed back on.
Proper preparation for changing the oil in a manual transmission and a list of necessary tools
Preparing to change the oil in a manual transmission involves choosing the right tools and following safety precautions.
List of necessary tools for changing the oil in a manual transmission on a Geely MK:
- a set of wrenches (including a 12 wrench);
- a simple screwdriver;
- pliers;
- pharmaceutical syringe;
- workwear;
- empty container for draining;
- rags.
When changing oil, safety precautions must be observed. It is replaced only 10-15 minutes after stopping the engine. This will prevent unwanted consequences such as burns. Additionally, special clothing and rubber gloves are required. Waste oil liquid is unsafe, so protective clothing and gloves will prevent unpleasant consequences if the liquid gets on your skin.
Changing the oil in the Geely MK Cross gearbox - logbook of the 2013 Geely MK Cross on DRIVE2
Changing the oil in the gearbox. Little tricks. To change the oil in the gearbox we need: 1. Remove the engine protection. You needed keys for 17 and 16 (a spark plug wrench for the ratchet came in handy)
2. Cut about 2 cm from a 12mm hexagon purchased in advance.
3. Using the rest of the key, we tear off the plug and try to unscrew it. It didn’t work out to move it to the next edge, I struggled a little and came up with the following: we take a cut piece from the hexagon, insert it into the cork, and put a 12 key on the protruding part (we put it on with a ring). By rearranging the key relative to the hexagon, we can easily unscrew everything.
4. Drain the oil .5. We tighten the drain plug.
6. Unscrew the filler plug and insert the corrugation there (the corrugation from the packaging of some air conditioner). The corrugation fits tightly. We put a watering can on the other end of the corrugation (bought at a hardware store). Fill in the oil. The corrugation is transparent and you can see when the oil stops flowing into the gearbox.
7. Tighten the filler plug and this is the end of the exercise)))
I also changed the engine oil, spark plugs and gasoline filter. There were no difficulties when replacing the latter. It was difficult to remove the wires from the spark plugs. Who's filming?

The process of changing the oil in the Geely SK gearbox
- We stop at the viewing hole.
- We dismantle the engine crankcase protection.
- Unscrew the gearbox oil level plug. You will need a 12mm hexagon (or a 22mm wrench). Clean the magnet on the plug. Don't lose the gasket.
- Unscrew the gearbox drain plug. If you do not first unscrew the control plug, the lubricant will flow out twice as long as usual. You will need a 12mm hexagon (or a 22mm wrench). Clean the magnet on the plug. Don't lose the gasket.
- We wait until the old Geely CK oil flows into a previously placed container for waste. As practice shows, mining drains over the course of 1.5-2 hours, no less than that.
It is worth noting that far from the full volume of boxed oil flows out by gravity. As a rule, up to 30-40% of old oil is retained in the box! Completely 100% of the waste can only be removed using a special machine unit, which is available only in certified Geely service centers.
- We tighten the plugs (filler and control).
- Open the hood and unscrew the breather of the Geely SK gearbox.
- Using a large syringe with an extension hose, fill the transmission with new oil.
Please note that about 2.0 (l) of service fluid fits up to the checkpoint inspection hole. But experts advise pouring new lubricant slightly more than the control level. It is recommended to fill in the range of 2.3-2.4 (l).
- We tighten the breather.
- We check the operation of the checkpoint.
Changing and checking the oil in the Geely MK / MK Cross manual transmission
The manufacturer recommends checking the oil level in the gearbox every 10 thousand kilometers, and changing the oil after 20 thousand kilometers.
It is recommended to drain the oil within 15 minutes after the trip, until it has cooled down and has good fluidity.
Required: hex wrench “12”, syringe for refilling, container for draining oil.
The filler plug is located on the front of the gearbox in the direction of travel, next to the front suspension mount of the power unit.
The drain plug is located below, under the inner joint of the left wheel drive.
1. Place the vehicle on a viewing ditch or lift.
3. Clean the filler plug and remove it. Make sure the transmission housing is filled with oil to the required level. If necessary, add oil (see point 7).
4. To change the oil, remove the drain plug.
5. . and drain the oil into a prepared container.
6. Close the drain plug.
7. Fill the oil with a syringe to the level of the lower edge of the control and filling hole.
8. Wipe the filler plug and tighten it.

DAJ subscriber question
Did the transmission start to hum in certain gears?
How exactly did it manifest itself? , I started answering there, but I’ll continue here.
So what I found on the forums: 1. I want to express my opinion about our checkpoint. I read our and Russian forums and came to the following conclusions: - the input shaft bearings fail due to overheating, because... they are not lubricated enough. The reason is under-cast lubrication channels in the housing. The channels need to be finished and drilled; for those who did this, the gearbox runs for a very long time. When a new gearbox is purchased, it often comes with sealed bearings (perhaps to partially solve this problem). That's why many people advise adding more oil; - secondary shaft bearings fail due to improper preload. For many who unscrewed the hatch, the adjusting nut turned by hand even after a short mileage. When buying a new gearbox, the adjusting nut is often missing, and the hatch is firmly glued with some kind of glue. Therefore, you need to immediately open the hatch, install the nut, spring and make adjustments. The primary signs of a lack of preload and the beginning of bearing failure are slight crackling in the gearbox. Answer: The conclusions are interesting, but not complete. Before the repair, I spent a month re-reading all the forums about repairing our boxes and, apart from the assembly and disassembly technology, I didn’t really learn anything. Several on-board engineers helped a lot in repairing similar Toyota gearboxes, Hyundai Accent and others, but which were done at a special service station - there I learned many features of the repair and operation of the gearbox. Our box suffers from Toyota diseases (tendency to overheat), but the Chinese, wanting to reduce costs, added their own, namely: they made it possible to adjust the preload of the secondary shaft using a threaded sleeve, removed the adjustment of the axial play of the input shaft, reduced the geometric dimensions of the box and thereby reduced the standard sizes of the bearings along with their load capacity. Additions: — The oil channels in our gearbox are milled and drilled, and judging by the statistics, the majority of defects in the channels are due to the purchase by Russians of licensed housings and gearboxes poorly restored using them. This also includes incomplete new and restored gearboxes without adjusting nuts - on factory gearboxes, with rare exceptions, all the parts are there, but the preload in most cases exceeds the permissible limit; — adjusting the preload with a threaded sleeve and the difficulty of controlling this adjustment, in conditions of low production standards, is evil and, as a result, in most cases the load rating on the secondary shaft bearings is exceeded by 1.1. Hence, overheating and destruction of tapered bearings (steel dust in oil), overheating and decomposition of oil (black oil and sludge on gearbox parts), overheating of gearbox housings and expansion of the seats of all bearings with their subsequent rotation (aluminum powder in oil). You can also attach steel shavings from the uncemented washer of the far bearing of the input shaft when it begins to rotate in its seat. The repair washer I bought was already cemented; — sealed bearings are a modern tribute to efficiency and environmental friendliness in the form of lowering the oil level, and the service life of these bearings in this mode is quite sufficient for 100-200 thousand km. All car companies are guilty of this, in the reports that I looked at there were sealed bearings: Mercedes, Fiat, Peugeot, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Mazda, etc. Sealed bearings are needed for normal lubrication of the needle bearings of the input shaft, because they cannot be splash lubricated and are sensitive to low gearbox oil levels due to the fact that the input shaft is located at the very top. The closed distant bearing together with the gearbox wall creates a container that is filled with oil and through the aluminum canister of the gearbox housing the oil is delivered inside the input shaft, and through special holes in the shaft the needle bearings are lubricated, including the problematic 5th gear bearing (it can also be in the form of a sleeve like I have).
2. I remembered another moment when I picked up the gearbox from a hundred after a rebuild, I tried to turn the input shaft, it didn’t work, the shaft didn’t rotate at all in any gear. Tell me, is this how it should be or should the shaft rotate by hand? Answer: It shouldn't be that way. This is a nuance in adjusting the preload of the tapered bearings of the secondary shaft of our gearbox. Even if this preload is adjusted correctly, when installing the hatch, additional force is transmitted through the shaped washer to the adjusting nut, leading to jamming of the secondary shaft and excessive preload of its bearings. Correct adjustment is to find the load limit of the tapered bearings, between wedging and free rotation with the hatch installed. It is best to do this in 5th gear by rotating the input shaft by hand. It turns out that after adjustment you need to loosen the adjusting nut 1/8 of a turn and this will compensate for the effect of the hatch. PS My opinion (IMHO): adjustment of the secondary shaft bearings of our box must be done with zero preload. As can be seen from the graph in the second screenshot, this results in a difference of 5% in the bearing life, but if the permissible load is exceeded, we get a reduction in life by several times, which is what happens with our gearboxes. Here are adjustment recommendations from Timken, the inventor of tapered roller bearings:

Weaknesses and disadvantages of Gili MK with mileage
The metal, like the paintwork, is very thin, which is why chips and dents appear even from a small pebble flying out from under the wheels of oncoming traffic. The body is poorly resistant to aggressive environmental influences, which is why rust appears on the car body after a couple of years of use.
Corrosion appears most quickly on the underside of the car (additional treatment with anti-corrosion agents is required) and in places where the paint is chipped. Also, traces of rust can be found on: the front doors (under the seal), the hood and the gas tank cap (in the lock area).
The protective glass of fog lights often cracks when used in cold and damp weather.
Transmission
The Geely MK was equipped only with a five-speed manual transmission. Transmission diagnostics must be treated with extreme care. The main ailment that owners have to deal with is the fragility of the bearings of the primary and secondary shafts. Most often, owners of cars with a mileage of 50-70 thousand km contact the service with complaints about extraneous noise in the transmission. You will have to spend 100-150 USD to fix the problem.
Axle shaft seals are also not famous for their durability; as a rule, oil leaks appear after 30-40 thousand kilometers. At a mileage of 60-70 thousand km, the clutch master cylinder needs to be replaced. To save a little, the cylinder can be repaired using a special repair kit. When using low-quality oil, with the onset of cold weather, difficulties with shifting gears appear. With careful operation, the clutch can last 80-100 thousand.
km (a new clutch kit with a release bearing will cost 40-60 USD).
