How to replace antifreeze on a Peugeot 308 in a garage

Changing the coolant of Peugeot 308

Typically, the coolant is replaced during routine maintenance. But in some cases, the fluid is changed before it reaches the end of its service life, for example, after a repair has been carried out that involves draining the antifreeze.

Replacement instructions are suitable for Peugeot models with an EP6 (EP3) engine:

  • Peugeot 308
  • Peugeot 208

The EP6 (EP3) engine was installed not only in Peugeot cars, but also in Citroen, BMW, and Mini Cooper. There are many variations of this power plant, but the 1.6 120 hp is considered more popular in our country.

Draining waste fluid

The Peugeot 308 does not have drain plugs, so the liquid must be drained by removing the pipes. To access them, you need to remove the original protection from below (Fig. 1).

Fig.1 Engine protection from below

It is secured with 8 bolts:

  • 2 at the rear, turnkey for 16;
  • on the sides 4, turnkey 10;
  • in the front part, 2 turnkey for 13.

After gaining access, we proceed directly to the drain:

  1. place the drain container and unscrew the lower radiator hose (Fig. 2); Fig.2 Draining from the lower hose
  2. if in your modification there is a hose running underneath the radiator, it also needs to be disconnected (Fig. 3); Fig.3 Hose under the radiator
  3. remove the plug from the expansion tank to allow air to enter the system and drain it as quickly as possible;
  4. to access the two air removal holes, you need to remove the air filter (Fig. 4); Fig.4 Air filter
  5. unscrew the first plug from the thermostat (Fig. 5); Fig.5 Plug on the thermostat
  6. remove the second plug, which is located on the upper hose going to the stove (Fig. 6); Fig.6 Plug on the stove hose
  7. To drain antifreeze from the cylinder block, remove the lower pipe going to the engine (Fig. 7). Fig.7 Lower pipe to the engine

In this way, we drain the antifreeze from the Peugeot 308 as much as possible, but you need to understand that some of the liquid still remains in the cabin heater and some pipes.

Flushing the cooling system

If you think that your cooling system is heavily clogged with deposits, you can use specialized flushes. For these purposes, chemicals from any well-known manufacturer are suitable, for example, Hi Gear 7-minute wash.

Before flushing the system, do not forget to reinstall everything that we removed when draining.

If you plan to change the brand of antifreeze, then flushing with distilled water is suitable. For this procedure, a 20 liter canister is sufficient. It will be enough for 3-4 runs.

Filling with new antifreeze without air pockets

When the old fluid has been drained and the system is completely clean, you can begin to fill in new antifreeze. We check again the pipes that we should have put in place, and leave the air outlet holes open.

Let's start filling the system:

  1. pour antifreeze into the cooling tank to the maximum mark (Fig. 1); Fig.1 Coolant fill
  2. We wait until all the air comes out through the special holes and the antifreeze flows. After this, we close it with the plastic plugs that we removed (Fig. 2); Fig.2 Air release
  3. check the antifreeze in the expansion tank and add to the required level;
  4. start the engine and let the car warm up to operating temperature;
  5. Check the coolant level again.

Do-it-yourself filling and replacement is complete, but you need to remember that after the first day of operation you should check the fluid level in the tank.

How to replace antifreeze on a Peugeot in a garage

With the onset of spring, it is advisable to check the condition of the antifreeze. If necessary, you need to replace it. In summer, the operating conditions of the cooling system are very different from winter. At high temperatures, it is necessary to constantly remove heat from the engine. Ineffective cooling system operation can lead to overheating and costly repairs. The procedure for replacing antifreeze is simple and can be done at home. You just need to buy coolant and replace it according to step-by-step instructions.

For the cooling system to function effectively, you need to fill in high-quality coolant (coolant). Some drivers try to replace it with ordinary water, but this should not be done, as it freezes in severe frost and will rupture the radiator and pipes. The operating temperature of the engine reaches 90 degrees, water boils at a temperature of 100 degrees. Therefore, boiling is inevitable, which can lead to serious consequences and scale formation.

Antifreeze or antifreeze is poured into the cooling system - a process fluid that is designed to cool the power unit during operation. In addition, they cover the cooling system elements with a protective film to prevent corrosion processes.

Antifreeze is a mixture of ethylene glycol with water and additives. The following types of antifreeze exist:

  • Hybrid. They can be filled in after antifreeze. The service life of these antifreezes is two years. They are inexpensive, but are more suitable for older engines.
  • Carboxylate. More advanced antifreezes G-12, G-12+ with additives based on carboxylic acids. It is a red liquid that crystallizes at -40 degrees and boils at 108 degrees. The peculiarity of this coolant is that it forms a protective layer only in areas of corrosion. Service life is three years. Antifreezes G-11 and G-12 should not be mixed. You can add any coolant to G-12+, but the service life will be reduced.
  • Lobridaceae. G-12++ antifreezes have an unlimited service life if the rules of use are followed. These antifreezes are rarely found on sale and are expensive.

Antifreeze is a coolant with domestically produced inorganic additives. There are two types of it: blue antifreeze-40 and red antifreeze-65. It coats the cooling system elements with a layer of silicates. Over time, the protective layer increases. This is good protection against corrosion, but heat transfer becomes worse. When replacing the coolant, you need to thoroughly flush the entire system to remove silicates. The peculiarity of antifreeze is that it cannot be heated above 105 degrees, it does not boil, but the additives precipitate. Therefore, it is not suitable for modern engines that heat up to temperatures of 110 degrees.

Antifreeze classification

The coolant on the Peugeot 308 should be changed when the service life of the antifreeze has expired or if there are signs that the antifreeze is not suitable for further use. The suitability of the coolant can be determined in the following ways:

  • using a test strip;
  • measuring the liquid with special instruments;
  • by color: the coolant has acquired a rusty tint;
  • by condition: presence of scale, metal shavings, foam.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing coolant with flushing

When replacing antifreeze, it is advisable to work in special clothing and gloves. Do not allow coolant fluid to come into contact with skin or varnished parts. If this happens, you need to wash off the liquid with water. There should be no small children or animals nearby; they can taste the pleasant-smelling coolant, which can lead to severe poisoning and death.

To carry out the work you need to prepare:

  • new coolant;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • a container for draining waste liquid with a volume of at least 10 liters;
  • clean rags.

Replacement is carried out on a cooled engine. The procedure for carrying out work on the Peugeot 308 is as follows:

  • Place the machine on a flat horizontal plane.
  • We unscrew the bolts and remove the original protection.
  • To relieve pressure in the cooling system, carefully unscrew the cap on the coolant reservoir. If you quickly unscrew the cap, you can burn your hands with antifreeze.
  • Under the radiator on the left side we install a container prepared for draining the waste.
  • Loosen the clamps holding the lower pipe. We disconnect the hose, put a rubber tube on the pipe and lower it into the container provided.
  • To speed up the draining procedure, unscrew the screw from the radiator hose and remove the air.
  • After draining the fluid from the radiator, we rearrange the container under the cylinder block. We unscrew the drain plug on it and drain the antifreeze.
  • We screw all the plugs back.

At the next stage, if necessary, flush the radiator, cooling system and cylinder block. The need for this arises if the type of antifreeze being poured changes, corrosion, scale has formed in the cooling system, mechanical impurities have appeared, etc. By flushing, the protective layer of old coolant is completely removed. Washing is carried out with water or a special cleaning agent.

After flushing, the stage of pouring antifreeze into the cooling system follows:

  • We check the integrity of the hoses. We check that all drain plugs are tightened.
  • Then unscrew the cap on the coolant conservator.
  • Unscrew the nipple screws to remove air.
  • Some coolant hoses are located slightly higher than the conservator neck, making them difficult to fill easily. To fill it, you need to make a simple device - a watering can for filling coolant. To do this, take a plastic bottle and cut off the bottom. The neck is sealed with any material so that it fits tightly into the neck of the expander.
  • We insert the manufactured extension into the expander and slowly fill it with coolant. As the nipples fill, antifreeze will flow out. First from the bottom. You need to wait until the liquid flows out without bubbles and tighten the nipple screw.
  • We continue to pour antifreeze until air comes out of the nipple located on top.
  • Pour out all the antifreeze, leaving about half a liter of liquid. We start the engine and let it run a little at high speeds and idle for about a minute. You need to wait for the fan to turn on and off.
  • We turn off the engine. When it cools down, remove the extension from the neck of the tank.
  • Check the antifreeze level in the tank. If it is below the maximum, add liquid. Screw on the expander cap.
  • We check the system for leaks. If found, fix the leak.
  • We return the crankcase protection to its place.

During operation of the Peugeot 308, it is necessary to change the antifreeze on time. Monitor the level in the tank and top up if necessary, otherwise the engine may overheat.

Replacement frequency, what antifreeze to fill

The original antifreeze poured into the Peugeot 308 has a blue-green color and a G11 approval; PSA Longlife produces it under its own label. But in fact, this is the usual GLYSANTIN G33, which is produced by BASF. PSA Longlife markings for antifreeze are 9735.K1, 9735.K0, and for concentrate 9735.K4.

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the fluid must be replaced after 6 years or 120,000 km. But as experience shows, the factory fluid must be changed after 2 years of operation.

Based on the experience of motorists who own this brand, it is advisable to do a complete wash when replacing. Do not use the original antifreeze, but buy G12 or a higher class and switch to it.

Do-it-yourself methods for changing the oil on a Peugeot 307

The article discusses options for changing the oil in the Peugeot 307 power unit . Explains how the process occurs. What to pay attention to. Perhaps the information will become useful to you, and your knowledge base will be replenished with new, necessary information.

About the engine both jokingly and seriously

When we sit comfortably in the seat of our car and start the engine, what is the first thing we do? That's right, let's listen to the noise coming from under the hood. It is there that the iron heart of the car is installed, which we must take care of and replace the necessary consumables in a timely manner.

Check its condition, regularly make a technical diagnosis, visiting a painfully familiar service station. We can take a risk (or be stupid) by entrusting the care of the garage power unit to a master. If necessary, and just for fun, we delve into the car ourselves, check whether there are any leaks from under the bottom, and regularly change the oil. By the way, let's talk about changing the oil in the internal combustion engine?

Speculation and rumors

Our drivers are not used to trusting manufacturers' recommendations. There are two opinions on this matter. On the one hand, advice is given on the basis of carefully conducted tests. On the other hand, they (advice) are advisory in nature, and vehicle tests are carried out on good road surfaces.

What should our drivers who drive on roads that are not of European quality do? Are the recommendations for non-adapted vehicles suitable for our “asphalt”?

For example, according to the manufacturer’s recommendation, changing the oil in the power unit (engine) of the French Peugeot 307 must be done at certain intervals. In practice, the indicated periods under our conditions are shifted, and the frequency of engine oil changes is reduced. According to the French side, you just need to follow:

Our drivers still change the Peugeot 307 engine oil.

In practice, the engine oil is changed COMPLETELY!

Checking and replacing Peugeot 307 oil with 1.6 engine

What is needed to check the oil level in the power unit? First of all, you need to check for errors. A diagnostic tool is used for this.

The next stage is installing the Peugeot 307 on a lift. Perhaps put the car on a viewing hole. Installation is carried out on a horizontal surface.

On the handbrake of the car

The first signal to change the oil can be the service icon, which by default is usually set at 20,000 kilometers and serves as a countdown.

It is customary at an authorized dealer to change the oil and filter at the same time every 20,000 kilometers or 1 year, whichever comes first.

We make a replacement for Peugeot:

  • We unscrew the filter, but not all the way, to allow the oil to drain into the pan.
  • Then you need to remove the oil filler plug. For convenience, it is recommended to use a funnel and pipe. You can use a cylinder.
  • Change the filter insert.
  • We fill in the oil in the volume according to the manufacturer's regulations; for the 1.6 VTi TU5JP4 engine, 3.2 liters are required, taking into account the filter volume

Oil changes are carried out at intervals of operation of the Peugeot 307 every 6 months. Or 10,000 km of car mileage. When constantly driving a Peugeot 307 in difficult road and climatic conditions, it is necessary to change the oil in the power unit after three months or a mileage of 5000 km.

Extreme conditions include vehicle operation throughout almost the entire territory of the post-Soviet space.

The oil volume for replacement is 3.75 liters. These indicators include the oil filter and must also be replaced.

What are severe conditions that require oil changes more often than once every six months?

  • These are short-term trips in a Peugeot 307 car, the range of which does not exceed 6 kilometers.
  • Short trips at - ambient temperature for a distance of up to 16 km.
  • If trips are accompanied by stops for a long time, when the power unit is constantly idling.
  • Extreme operating conditions for a French-made vehicle include moving at low speed and frequently changing traffic modes in megacities with endless congestion and traffic jams.
  • Frequent engine oil changes are required when the vehicle, in particular Peugeot, is operating in dusty areas.

Leaks and problems

The main reasons associated with antifreeze leakage lie in ignorance of certain details. In the Peugeot 308, such a small thing is the coolant reservoir cap. It has two valves, inlet and outlet, to maintain an optimal system pressure of 1.4 bar.

Coolant reservoir cap

To avoid jamming, the valves must be periodically washed, and the plug itself must be changed every 2 years. When the valve jams, the pressure in the system increases and, as a result, antifreeze leaks in a weaker place.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to diagnose a jammed valve, so the best solution would be to replace it, especially since the cap is not expensive.

Leaks in the Peugeot 308 cooling system, if they do occur, in most cases are not difficult to determine the location. As usual, this could be leaky pipes or a water pump, from which the leak will be noticeable on the timing belt guard.

Liquid may also leak from the thermostat, but this problem may not be immediately detected, since this place is covered by the installed air filter housing.

The cooling system of a Peugeot 308 is checked during a scheduled technical inspection, or when the season changes: winter/summer. Most often, new antifreeze is added during diagnosis. How to replace the coolant yourself, and what is required for this, read the article below.

Automotive compressors - what are they and how do they work?

Traveling by car always carries risks. And we are talking not only about the serious danger of getting into an accident, but also about minor troubles, such as a broken tire. Many drivers do not go on a long journey if the car does not have a special device for inflating wheels - a compressor. You need to understand what types of car compressors there are, how they work, and why you need to keep such a device in the trunk. Today we will try to cover all the features of operation, selection of a car compressor, and also tell you why you should go to a car store today if you don’t have such a device in your car.

Let's start with the fact that there are several types of pumps. Old manual models are not suitable for cars at all. They create too little pressure and do not allow the tire to be filled with air sufficiently. They are only suitable for bicycles. Foot-based options are more suitable, but are still inaccurate and force the motorist to use his foot for quite a long time before making a safe trip. And the third type is devices that have an autonomous pump-compressor and perform the work without your personal participation. It is enough to connect the device to the battery or cigarette lighter for the equipment to start pumping the wheel.

Coolant replacement timing

The engine cooling system is the key to a comfortable ride in a warm car in winter and a cool interior in summer. However, from the inside, the CO mechanism looks much more complicated.

The main function of the Peugeot 308 cooling system is to protect the engine from overheating.

As you know, during normal engine operation, the temperature rises to 90 °C and above. Under such conditions, many parts may fail prematurely. To avoid breakdowns, car manufacturers invented an internal combustion engine cooling system. The mechanism is based on a special process fluid - antifreeze.

The coolant consists of a synthetic solution and metal additives. Most often, they are the ones that corrode and fail. Remaining particles contaminate the oil, which in turn must be replaced immediately.

According to the technical regulations of the Peugeot 308 vehicle, antifreeze must be replaced every 90,000 km. A fluid change may be required earlier, especially if there are any malfunctions in the cooling system or engine.

The period for replacing the coolant directly depends on the quality of the consumable fluid. Cheap fluid requires changing every 50,000 km, or even more often.

The most accurate way to determine the need to replace antifreeze is to visually examine the liquid (if there is a change in color, smell or composition).

What role does the cooling system play in a car?

The cooling system is one of the most important components of a vehicle. It maintains the optimal temperature of the running engine, so if there is a malfunction, the power plant either overheats or operates at a low temperature. In turn, overheating can lead to engine breakdown, and insufficient temperature can lead to accelerated wear of parts and excessive fuel consumption.

The components of the cooling system are:

  1. Radiator. Serves as a heat exchanger that removes excess heat into the atmosphere.
  2. Coolant. It is a mixture of antifreeze and distilled water. For the proper functioning of the entire system, periodic replacement of Peugeot 308 antifreeze is required.
  3. Circulation pump, or pump. Responsible for moving coolant and removing heat from the power unit.
  4. Thermostat. Regulates the flow of fluid through the radiator.
  5. Radiator cooling fan. Guarantees intensive air passage for effective heat exchange.
  6. Drive belts. They rotate the liquid pump, and on some machines, the radiator fan.
  7. Hoses for moving coolant.
