The construction of special versions of VAZ cars by the manufacturer or small third-party companies is a vast topic and has a history. What is a “factory tuning studio” in the case of AVTOVAZ and what do these companies do - in our material.

The story, by and large, began in the early 1990s, not coincidentally coinciding with the birth of the “free market”. A lot of water, gasoline, money (and in some places even, what is there, blood) has flowed since then both in Russia and in the once “gangster” Togliatti - the “charged” “dozens” of VAZ-21106 with a 2-liter Opel engine, and Tarzan frame SUVs on Niva units and with “eight”, “eleven” or “twelve” bodies...

But some of the companies not only survived in the seething stream of the Russian market, but also found their own identity and now offer quite high-quality, diverse, periodically updated (albeit small-scale) and very interesting products. Being each in its own niche, these companies solve, in general, one task - they help AVTOVAZ expand its range with those modifications that are unrealistic to launch on the assembly line due to the small circulation, bordering on one-off and even exclusivity. Let's take a quick look at all the Bronto variants

The abbreviation "PSA" stands for "production of special vehicles." The company was formed in 1993 on the basis of the VAZ Scientific and Technical Center, but legend says that a year before that, the company’s founders assembled the first Niva with increased interior capacity; those first cars of the “Dobrontov” era were registered as Niva Sahara... Since then, the company has produced more than 8,500 units of equipment, 10 models and 20 modifications; The all-terrain vehicles Marsh, Niva with an extended base, called Fora, and the armored Fors are widely known. There have always been three main directions - armored vehicles, special off-road versions and all-terrain vehicles. All directions are based on Niva, now Lada 4x4. We worked (and still work) here with Chevrolet Niva SUVs. All models have transport type approval and are produced under their own Bronto brand.

Now the basis of the PSA Bronto model range is a special version of the Lada 4x4 Lynx SUV, put into production in 2009. It has several modifications (Lynx, Lynx-2 and Lynx-3) with short and long wheelbases, as well as with a cargo compartment covered with a plastic awning, but they have the same base: a Lada 4x4 body “lifted” by 40 mm, cross-wheel drive differentials front and rear, suspension from Chevrolet Niva, reinforced rear axle beam, “off-road” 15-inch wheels. In addition, every month, 2-3 Marsh all-terrain vehicles (with a modified Lada 4x4 body, a modified UAZ frame and low-pressure tires) and 1-2 armored cars of protection classes 2 and 3 are assembled on special orders. By the way, it was here that the famous “Putin’s Niva” was created - a camouflaged car, officially designated as Bronto Jungle, which, due to the 1.9-liter engine that had not passed certification, remained manufactured in a single copy...

In 2013, it practically merged with another Tolyatti company, which, after much hesitation, recently again became a VAZ “daughter” - VIS-Auto. The merger of companies, each of which has more than 20 years of history, actually resulted in the transfer of Bronto production to VIS-Auto facilities. Nevertheless, each company has retained the independence of its brand in the market (semi-frame pickups are produced under the VIS-Auto brand, the newest one at the moment is based on Lada Granta), and the association allowed Bronto residents to change the car assembly technology - if previously they took a ready-made car from AVTOVAZ, They completely dismantled it, redesigned it and reassembled it, but now for the production of Lynx they get a “black” (that is, unpainted) body, which has allowed them to cut costs and reduce production costs. In total, Bronto produces about 20-30 cars every month - this is not much even against the background of its “sister brother” VIS-Auto, which produces about 10 times more of its pickup trucks.

But Bronto has its own niche, despite the crisis and the reduction in sales volumes - it works with each client separately, and it is possible to quickly adapt to changing conditions. The client can come directly to the plant to discuss the configuration, can contact the car showroom of Bronto’s own dealer network (there are now about 80 of them in Russia), or can try to buy a “special version” through Lada car dealerships - some of the dealers accept Bronto products for sale. Last year, the basic Lynx was about 50,000 rubles more expensive than the serial Lada 4×4.

After this, the arrow will become pliable. After the work has been done, all instrument panels need to be left alone and start looking for stickers. Naturally, you can buy them at the market, but you can also make them yourself. All you need is a good printer for printing.

Those skilled in working with image editing programs can improve a pre-downloaded photo. The printed sticker is installed using glue, but it is better to use a waterproof adhesive due to the frequent penetration of moisture under the instrument panel glass. After the entire procedure, you can finish the work or continue and install a new backlight, replacing the standard lamps with LEDs. There is one secret that allows you to make the LED light non-directional and diffuse, which makes it look much better on the instrument panel, and at the same time does not distract the driver while driving. To do this, the heads of the LED lamps are cut off, and transparent glue is applied in their place. After checking all the equipment, the instrument panel is installed back in place.

Suspension

Complaints about the factory suspension concern both the lack of controllability and composure of the vehicle at high speeds, as well as uncomfortable movement on Russian roads known for their condition. Standard shock absorbers can be replaced with gas-filled ones; they can be twin-tube or single-tube. Visually, the car body will become slightly more elevated. In terms of technical parameters, controllability and stability will increase, moreover, such shock absorbers have a longer service life. Tire wear does not increase, and the braking process itself also changes for the better.

LADA Sport LLC

LADA Sport is partly on par with the presented companies, and partly – out of the ordinary. On the one hand, it has a rich history - it began with a small company TMS, which, initially being a racing team, in the late 1990s began manufacturing “road” sports versions of VAZ cars, starting with the “tenth” family. TMS is still alive today; now it is given over to all purely racing projects under the Lada Sport brand, including the construction of cars for the WTCC championship. Also in the history of Lada Sport there were the rally kit car Lada Revolution, and the original sports prototype Lada Revolution-2, on the basis of which a racing cup was even organized...

But, on the other hand, the real recent history of Lada Sport started only two years ago, when a small-scale assembly of the Lada Granta Sport model was organized on the former premises of the AVTOVAZ Sports Car Department. A year later, the Lada Kalina Sport hatchback was added to it, which we tested, and in 2015 the Lada Kalina NFR with a 140-horsepower engine on a subframe should start... Now on the Lada Sport there is no longer a “piece” assembly, everything is according to modern canons of quality and in order series 3,000 – 4,000 cars per year.

Perhaps, of all, “close to the court” and the most advanced. At least, it has made its products as mass-produced and stable in quality as possible. And this is the only company whose products are included in the main Lada model range. Cars here are assembled from scratch, and only the engine is supplied assembled - in LADA Sport it is “stuffed” with a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. In addition, the sports Kalin and Grant have shock absorbers, brake discs, and springs that are different from the standard ones. The interior of the cars has its own Ladasport seats and original sporting touches. The total number of “non-original” parts is about 56 pieces. In December 2014, we familiarized ourselves in detail with the production process of sports versions of Lada.

Last year the company sold about 220 cars every month. The best VAZ dealers are selected to sell these cars. At the beginning of sales, in the spring of 2013, in the AVTOVAZ dealer network there were only 25 car dealerships selling Lada Sport cars, and to date there are already 82. In addition to the mentioned Lada Kalina NFR, the company’s immediate plans include a 200-horsepower Lada Kalina NFR Turbo and, of course, Lada Vesta Sport.

This is factory tuning in the VAZ style. How all these companies will survive the crisis is a difficult question. Some will face serious difficulties, while others will hardly feel the difficult times, hiding in the shadow of “big brother”. The presented companies do not compete with each other, offering products for a specific target audience, but it is clear that each of them needs to offer something new in order to maintain and increase demand. In 2015, we will probably see interesting “niche” new products based on Lada products and then we will definitely return to the topic.

The choice of alloy wheels is not only a tribute to fashion and a desire to improve the appearance of the car, although it is the design that people think about first of all when intending to replace the standard steel wheels. It is the wheels that attract attention when viewing the VAZ 21099 tuning photo. Hundreds, if not thousands, of design options, dozens of manufacturers, various decorative coatings - choosing original wheels that suit the style is not at all difficult, and when choosing them, buyers are guided by their appearance. Meanwhile, the so-called “titans” perform many important functions.

Firstly, the lighter weight of such discs allows you to reduce the load on the suspension components. This opportunity cannot be neglected, given the condition of the road surface in our country.

Secondly, the geometry of cast wheels is much more correct than that of stamped ones. Simply put, alloy wheels are rounder. This improves ride quality and comfort by eliminating the imbalance introduced by uneven steel wheels right out of the box.

The VAZ 21099 has been out of production for a long time, so there is no need to talk about tuning a new car today. This car is available only on the secondary market and almost always, one way or another, it turns out to be subject to tuning. How successful this tuning was, the ninety-ninth model is selling so quickly and profitably.

The new owner of the 99th model is often faced with the need to “tweak” everything that the previous owner has done. I must say that there are not so many successful examples of tuning this car. The bulk of the alterations are in bad taste and handicraft. However, you should not judge harshly the owners who are trying to improve the car with their own hands.

So that your “ninety-nine” does not look like thousands of poorly tuned sisters, you need to think carefully about the future design and the means of its implementation. It is most likely not advisable to give a far from new domestic car to professional tuners. It will cost much more than the car itself.

First of all, you should review (fortunately, there is such an opportunity) all tuning options for the VAZ 21099, and select several dozen of the most successful ones from them. Next, you need to highlight the five most impressive options and think about whether you could improve any of them. But it’s best to come up with your own design, keeping in mind the most successfully implemented projects.

Let's be realistic! Of course, no one is going to invest several thousand dollars in the “ninety-nine” just for fun. Tuning this car is all about making it a little nicer than it actually is. The maximum that is worth going to is widening the arches, which will then allow the installation of wider wheels.

The wheels alone can give the 99 a modern and attractive look. To support them, you can choose an interesting body kit from those available in the range. Next, it is recommended to choose a striking paint and find a unique shade.

CJSC "Super-Auto"

made a name for itself with products of a slightly different focus, although both SUVs and pickups were (and are) in its lineup. But the “face” of the model is with elongated bodies and more powerful power units than standard ones. After all, in the 90s, the company built those very “charged” “tens” VAZ-21106 with a 2-liter 16-valve Opel C 2.0 XE engine that produced 150 hp. and “stretch versions” of the VAZ-21108 Premier, extended by 175 mm. These models (and there was also the VAZ-2120 Nadezhda minivan) were born precisely thanks to the cooperation of AVTOVAZ and Super-Auto in 1997. Since this all started.

The basis for keeping the business afloat changed periodically - for example, until recently, the company relied on cars of the Samara-2 family, but with the suspension and power unit from Lada Priora, as well as with an exclusive interior, if the customer required it. These cars sold well, but with the departure of the base model from the assembly line, the priorities in Super-Auto, of course, also changed. Here they tried to enter the same river for the second time - they prepared a 1.8-liter engine for the Priora, and the second attempt, unlike the first (the previous version of the engine had a short resource), turned out to be successful: the increase in volume was obtained not by “boring”, but improved original connecting rod and piston group. However, last year we got acquainted with the Lada Priora 1.8 in detail.

Using exactly the same recipe, Super-Auto received an engine for the Lada 4×4 SUV, and the engine also turned out quite well, but the fate of this version has not yet been decided - it will depend on the vector of modernization of the SUV at AVTOVAZ itself, and this vector is changing all the time . So if such a machine appears, it will only be in the foreseeable future. And in the current Super-Auto lineup there are Priors with a 1.8-liter engine in four body styles (serial sedan, hatchback and station wagon, as well as the “stretch” Premier extended by 80 mm), as well as three variants of the long-wheelbase Lada 4×4 – a medical van, a truck for the Ministry of Emergency Situations and a “standard” delivery pickup truck.

All the years of its existence, Super-Auto has been closely cooperating with AVTOVAZ; this compact production facility operates with quality standards introduced into the activities of its “big brother” by the Renault-Nissan alliance, and the first months of production of the 1.8-liter Priora will be closely monitored by the factory’s Customer Satisfaction Center. The assembly scheme is as follows: a fully assembled car arrives at Super-Auto, the engine is removed from it, modified and put back. Cars have their own VIN number and are covered by the standard AVTOVAZ warranty. Super-Auto's capacity allows it to assemble up to 500 Lada Priora 1.8s monthly, and the cars will be distributed through the Lada dealer network.

Engine tuning

Most domestic cars have many flaws that reduce the power of the engine and chassis. So, for example, the thermostat can work great while driving to cool the engine, but as soon as the heating system turns on, the operation of this device immediately goes out of control. In this case, problems arise with engine overheating, complete failure of the vehicle, or wear of parts. The thermostat can be adjusted a little after first understanding the cause of the problem. When the heating system is turned on, the heating fluid and coolant are mixed, causing the cooling level in the thermostat to drop. This has a particularly strong effect with the onset of frost when the coolant already sinks to the bottom of the container. The best option would be to install a pipe where the thermal element is located in the thermostat. In addition, you will need to close the hole in the water pump. This will allow you to control the incoming liquid when the heating system is turned on. After these changes, you can notice that even at elevated interior temperatures, the temperature in the engine will not exceed 78C, and this is optimal for its operation.

In production, it is often possible to replace, as defects are allowed when installing, the alternator belt, or, more simply, the timing belt. This makes the engine less powerful and also significantly reduces driving safety. In order to fix this problem, you need to replace the belt with a new one, and you can do the work yourself. The main thing is to avoid the common mistake of bending or twisting the belt, which significantly reduces its service life. At the beginning of work, before removing the generator belt, you need to remove all parts that prevent its dismantling. These are the steering pump, belt pulleys and air filter. After this procedure, the generator belt is removed, having previously unscrewed the two bolts that hold it, and the work is carried out in the reverse order when installing a new part. It is recommended to carry out the work only with knowledge of the matter, so as not to damage the crankshaft mechanism when removing the timing belt.

We resort to serious processing - boring the cylinder block

You can also increase the engine power by boring the cylinder block. Due to this, the volume of the combustion chamber increases, which means that a larger amount of the fuel mixture is placed in it. When choosing this method of modifying an installed motor, the following points should be taken into account:

  • Increasing the volume of cylinder blocks does not lead to a significant increase in fuel consumption.
  • This work can only be carried out if you have certain experience and equipment.
  • When changing the design, one should take into account the fact that the walls of the cylinder block become thinner. At the same time, the design has channels for the cooling system. Therefore, attention should be paid to the calculations performed.

Boring a cylinder block yourself is possible only if you have the required equipment and certain skills. The surface must be strictly cylindrical and free from significant defects. Otherwise, the engine will begin to wear out quickly.
