The Lada Raven sports car was not sold in Russia

Austrian craftsmen from the little-known company Milan Automotive, founded in the spring of 2017 by former racing driver Markus Fuchs, released their first production car, Milan Red, with amazing technical and dynamic characteristics.

For stability on the highway at such speeds, in addition to active aerodynamics and an impressive diffuser, a dynamically adjustable suspension is responsible, which can change on the fly not only the stiffness of springs, shock absorbers, stabilizers and change the ground clearance ranging from 90 to 135 mm, but also even adjust the camber and wheel alignment on both axles. As a result, the machine can withstand lateral overloads of up to 2.6 g.

Of course, the project to create such a monster was not implemented a little more than a year after the founding of Milan Automotive; Markus Fuchs began work on his own sports car quite a long time ago, and the first prototype called Milan appeared back in 2012, and according to some sources it was then Even David Coulthard himself tried it.

The most interesting thing is the design of the car, or rather its origin: the appearance of Milan Red was created on the basis of sketches of the 2013 model by our compatriot Dmitry Lazarev. The designer from Russia called his creation Lada Raven and initially offered to implement it to AvtoVAZ, but the management of the domestic auto giant showed no interest in this project. But the appearance of the failed Russian supercar attracted the attention of the Austrians (and not only them), and in 2022 Milan Automotive entered into an official agreement for the acquisition of rights and detailed design development with the PIK Vector design bureau based in Sevastopol, where Lazarev was already working at that time .

The initiator of the Spanish-Ukrainian project Himera-Q, Andrey Dzhazovsky, who presented his supercar, very similar to the Milan Red, at the New Cars Fest automobile festival in Kiev in the summer of 2022, also recently declared ownership of the copyright to the design of this coupe. However, the Chimera has not yet reached mass production; things have not gone beyond a public announcement and some road tests.

As for the very living design successor of the Lada Raven, tangible for now only visually in photographs, the Milan Red, as conceived by the creators, will be released in an extremely limited edition of 99 copies at a price of 1.8 million euros over five years. According to representatives of Milan Automotive, the company received 18 orders for this car even before the official start of sales. It is noteworthy that Milan Red will travel its first kilometers on Russian roads: according to the agreement with PIK Vector, part of the road tests of the sports car will take place in Crimea.

Dmitry Lazarev is a Russian designer who is the author and developer of the appearance of the concept, called Raven. The first photos, which are the result of 3D modeling, were published by the author in November 2013. These images are still freely available today. Work on the project was carried out more according to the mood, rather than according to any pre-established requirements. This can be understood from the author's comment:

“The LADA Raven concept car was modeled in Blender. The work began in 2012, namely on August 30th. Then, the project was abandoned for some time... And then, after so much time (in November 2013), the decision came to shake off the dust from the file.”

“This is not a Ukrainian supercar! This is the Lada Raven concept!” — the Internet community is seething with indignation. Which is partly right: there really are similarities in the features of the Chimera and Raven... And the Austrians from Milano Automobile also showed a similar layout. Did three different designers actually draw identical cars? We decided to figure it out.

Lada Raven: the story of a Bashkir nugget

In 2014, then unknown to anyone, Dmitry Lazarev drew a curious car: a young designer from the city of Salavat tried to imagine the appearance of... the first supercar of the Lada brand! The car called “Raven” (English Raven - Raven) attracted the attention of the online public, and replicated pictures scattered across websites and forums.

The aspiring designer even submitted a bright project to the official competition of sketches of new Lada cars, organized by the Russian auto giant. However, soon... he withdrew his work. As Lazarev assures, he was disappointed by the conditions of the competition, when the judges are not members of an authoritative jury, but network users. Dmitry wanted an expert assessment of his concept.

Milano Red: what is the connection between Austria and Crimea?

After some time, the Austrian company Milano Automobile became interested in the work of the Bashkir author, which decided to use a virtual model to create a completely new supercar, Milano Red. The parties shook hands. At the same time, it was possible to agree that part of the design and engineering work would be carried out... in Crimea.

On the Russian side, the project participant is the Sevastopol group, which includes the Tsel experimental design bureau. The latter will become a platform for the work of engineers and designers: “For them, this is pure business,” Crimeans comment on the Austrians’ interest.

With the almost identical Lada Raven and Milano Red, it’s clear that they were drawn by the same person. But why does the first Ukrainian supercar Himera Q look like both the Lada Raven and the Milano Red? “Auto Mail.Ru” asked this question to the direct hero of these events - Dmitry Lazarev. Who believes that someone Andrei Dzhazovsky is now “making this project through deception”!

Andrey Dzhazovsky is a native of Ukraine now living in Monaco, on whose order several bright replica cars were built on modern chassis (for example, a coupe stylized as a GAZ-21 on BMW units). In 2014, he began work on his own supercar project, to which he managed to attract several large companies.

This is how the designer describes the story. After the Internet debut of the Lada Raven, Dzhazovsky offered Lazarev the position of designer in his company: the businessman was just about to begin production of the “first Ukrainian supercar” - the same Himera Q - and considered that the sensational work of the young author could well serve as an excellent basis for this project.

I was offered cooperation on good terms, I agreed. I handed them the files and they started making a model of the car. It's time to sign the contract. But our verbal agreements were not written down on paper! They just wanted to ditch me... I left the project

According to Dzhazovsky, the situation was different. The young man was paid for the work of creating sketches, but before signing the employment contract, Lazarev demanded that the conditions be changed: for each car sold, the designer wanted to receive 20% of its value (approximately 140,000 euros). Having received a refusal, the young man simply stopped communicating...

When Dmitry “left the project”, or, more simply put, disappeared, we continued our work. They hired other people. From the first sketches only the general idea remained, but the proportions and details were seriously redone, so the Chimera is no Lada Raven

As the businessman assures, while he was building the first model, the author of the sketches considered that he was allowed to sell his concept to anyone. Therefore, as soon as the Austrians became interested in “Raven,” the artist, without hesitation, transferred all the developments to them. As a result, cars that are indecently similar to each other are being prepared for production - Himera Q and Milano Red.

Milano Red and Himera Q: who is first?

Who is right? Both sides are ready to go to court to prove their case. But Dzhazovsky has an extremely compelling argument on his side: the businessman has patented a utility model of a supercar—in other words, he has obtained the rights to the design of the car. In turn, the designer believes that the documents were drawn up illegally and “the European patent may be revoked.”

In Europe, to determine whether an industrial design (design) is new and original, patent examinations are not carried out - there is only a check for the correctness of the application and payment of the fee. After such an “examination,” the sample is registered and published; accordingly, any interested person can try to challenge the applicant’s rights.

It is curious that Milano Automobile also tried to file a patent for the appearance of its supercar (Auto Mail.Ru has copies at its disposal). But just this week, Andrei Dzhazovsky’s lawyers managed to cancel the document. At the same time, Dmitry Lazarev continues to insist that he is right.

However, it is the “Chimera” that has a chance to appear earlier than the Milano Red: the commercial version of the “first Ukrainian supercar” is promised to be shown this fall. A certain Spanish company will assemble the model. They want to ask about 700,000 euros for the electric version, and later a “simpler” car will appear - with a gasoline engine from the Audi R8 and a price of about 500,000 euros.

For Chimera, we plan to use graphene batteries, but we are also looking into installing Ukrainian-made supercapacitors. In general, Himera is just the beginning: the Xeno sports car and a whole family of compact city electric vehicles are ahead

They promise to equip the electric version with four electric motors (one for each wheel) with a total power of 1000 hp. and a graphene superbattery with a capacity of 86 kWh, which should provide a range of 750-1000 km. The main thing is that legal squabbles do not put an end to this undoubtedly beautiful car. After all, “the first Ukrainian supercar” sounds proud!

Control and management bodies

Most likely, the center console will be a combination of a digital dashboard and an entertainment center display that protrudes strongly towards the driver. The steering wheel will be made in a pronounced sporty style: small in size and original shape with lining at the bottom and an abundance of buttons on the spokes.

There is reason to assume that the central tunnel will also receive a developed technical unit, headed by the transmission selector, but enough space will be given to comfortable elements here: in addition to cup holders and an organizer, a convenient armrest with a content cooling function will be available.

Seating

The dimensions of the new product will allow you to place only two people in the cabin, in the most comfortable buckets, which, moreover, will ensure the safety of passengers. The following options will be offered: heating, ventilation, precise settings with position memory function and many others.

There is no need to talk about the volume of the trunk yet, but it is clear that even it cannot be called average: the maximum that it will be able to take is a couple of sports bags - and that’s all.

Exterior

The designers do not hide the fact that the possible founder of the dynasty of Russian sports cars is initially focused on the needs of the youth driving community. The configuration and layout of the body are dominated by details of the sporty-aggressive style characteristic of the design of supercars from leading automobile brands.

In particular, in the photo of the front side of the front end of the Lada Raven 2019, it shows an equal number of functional and decorative body elements. The rear-engine body layout made it possible to optimize the shape, angle and dimensions of the front end.

In view is the compact racing format of the windshield and the embossed hood, under which is located the volume of a small luggage compartment. Most of the front end area is occupied by the air intakes of the engine compartment ventilation systems and the disc brake mechanisms of the front axle.
The class of the car assumes LED or laser fittings, complemented by the flourishes of running lights of narrow LED optics.
Anti-fog lighting is represented by red LED strips built into the side air diffusers. The layout of the front end is complemented by ribbed elements of the aerodynamic body relief.

The new body of the supercar concept looks dynamic and futuristic in the side view. The sports status of the new product is confirmed by:

gentle slope of the roof and windshield;
high line of side windows;
low-slung body and voluminous wheel arches with racing titanium wheels.

The general style is consistent with the configuration of the reverse view mirrors and doorways, the shape of additional air intakes and aerodynamic longitudinal wave reliefs. The flying silhouette of the body is emphasized by decorative inserts.

The design of the rear side of the rear-engine body of the Lada Raven 2022 is exclusive in every way. In the central part there is a volumetric protrusion of the engine compartment equipped with hatches and covers.
On one line there are huge diffusers separated by elements of the body structure, equipped with side lights and fog lamps.
Contrary to the principles of the standard layout, dual large-caliber exhaust pipe tips are located in the central part of the bumper.

Despite its relatively compact dimensions, the new sports car, if it has decent power characteristics, will receive all the data for successful competition with analogues in a higher price category.
