The process of replacing the rear shock absorber on a Lada Priora VAZ-2170

Struts, or shock absorbers, on Priora, are an important integral part of the suspension. They soften the passage over every bump or hole on the road. The price of racks for 1 unit is not very high, for a Priora car from 2000 rubles. but there are 4 of them and that’s already a lot. Some people try to save money and change only the front struts first.

But I don’t see anything good here, and this is not the whole price, give half the money, but by changing only the front - when you pass a speed bump, the back of the car will reverberate in your spine. Structurally, the front shock absorber is different from the rear one, because the front suspension of the Priora car is more complex. The rear pillars are simpler in design - they experience less load, and they even cost less. You will find the article number of SAA struts for Lada Priora below in the article. Since there are many of them, car enthusiasts try to choose “soft” cars. AvtoVAZ initially installed shock absorbers on the Priora such that, compared to models of the same class, the VAZ-2170 performs favorably when driving speed bumps, in the city and when traveling off-road.

But this is all advertising and in fact the SAAZ racks, crappy, work in one direction. This means they dampen vibrations only when you press them, and press them back without any effort.

Sometimes car owners are looking for other shock absorbers on the Priora (along with several other components) to make their car more stable when turning, and the suspension itself more “hardy” and durable. For example, I installed the ss20, along with the supports, and realized that they are really the best for this car. When thinking about which ones are better, they choose not only sports components. But AvtoVAZ still took care of the suspension design, strengthening the rear shock absorbers of the Priora station wagon.

Standard struts (shock absorbers) of the Priora car - article number and price

Devices for damping (vibration damping) in the Lada Priora car were produced by the SAAZ 50 plant. The A-pillars are the same for all body types (they differ only on the sides - they are symmetrical), and are similar in size - the diameter of the rod is 23 mm, the diameter of the body is 49 mm.

The standard front shock absorber struts on the Priora are praised, rarely opting for analogues. Article numbers for front shock absorbers for Priora:

  • 21702905003 (left) – 2,500 rubles;
  • 21702905002 (right) – 2,500 rubles.

The rear shock absorbers on the Priora received catalog number 21702915004, the price is about 1,400 rubles. As for them, drivers note that bumps are “swallowed”, while the car drives smoothly, but at high speed it “floats”, and this is dangerous.

Priora rear shock absorber size

This product was chosen by 4 customers

“Standard” - the softest shock absorbers in terms of settings, an excellent solution for those who prefer a soft suspension, a smooth ride, and quiet movement. This shock absorber setting is suitable for everyday use, mainly in city conditions.

Basic faults

Failures of a part of the Priora suspension can be judged by the following signs:

  • Oil leaks under the wheels. The shock absorber consists of a cylinder, valves, a piston with a rod - all parts actively move, so they need lubrication. If there are leaks, it means the device has become depressurized and will work less efficiently.
  • Mechanical damage. If possible, visually inspect the parts - if there is any deformation or rust, it means they have “worked their best.”
  • Rock the front (and then the back) of the car in different directions - away from you, to the left, to the right. When you release the car, one or two vibrations are considered normal - it is “damped” by a normal shock absorber. If the car stops immediately, the part is jammed; if it continues to wobble, replace it.
  • When traveling, the car begins to wobble, the braking distance increases, and when turning, the car wobbles greatly. Also, when driving over speed bumps, or ordinary potholes, broken shock absorbers do not dampen vibrations at all, that is, the car sways as if on waves, and a knock will be heard.

Service station employees check the suspension with a vibration stand or a special stand. The check goes down to small units - they can even tell you how long it will take to approximately replace them.

When to change

Factory SAAZ rear struts usually withstand 70-80 thousand kilometers, after which, according to the factory’s recommendations, they need to be replaced. But there is no point in changing shock absorbers if they do their job perfectly, unless you want to change the characteristics of the suspension.

It is not difficult to determine the serviceability of the racks yourself. As already mentioned, the first sign of their malfunction is a visible oil leak. In addition, faulty shock absorbers give themselves away with a characteristic dull knock in the area of the rear arches. This is also evidence of their depressurization and oil leakage.

You can verify that the racks are faulty in a simple way. Try rocking the left or right rear of the car. If it swung once and froze rigidly, it means that everything is in order with the shock absorber from which you rocked the body. If the car continues to rock, the shock absorber is faulty, and the body lowers and rises due to the spring.

Which struts are better: gas or oil, or maybe gas-oil

I’ll say right away, not for the sake of advertising, I haven’t seen anything better than the ss-20 on the Priora. To understand which racks are better, or which ones are more suitable for you, you need to know their operating principle.

Gas - the internal filling is gas, very hard, you can’t just push them through with your hand, or if you put them on a car, you can’t just break through the suspension - but you’ll drive like a bucket.

Oil-filled - they are filled with oil, soft, and very often create force in only one direction. Installed on almost all cans from the factory. The suspension is soft and killable - if you hit a good bump, it won’t be difficult to break through the shock absorber until it clicks unpleasantly.

Gas-oil ones are an interesting option; they contain both gas and oil inside. When the strut reaches critical compression, the gas is activated, pushing the oil and with it the rod into the neutral position. That is, on critical bumps the gas will not allow the suspension to break through.

Popular rack models

Racks SS20

produces fairly high-quality and inexpensive chassis parts. As for the Priora, for this model, manufacturers offer four options for struts; they differ from each other in only one parameter - rigidity while driving. All SS20 shock absorbers are hydraulic.

Let's look at each option:

  • "Standard". These SS20 components are considered the softest. Front and rear components can be replaced with SS20 "Standard". There is a special modification of this SS20 model, which allows you to increase the carrying capacity of the Priora.
  • "Comfort". This entry kit comes with front and rear pieces. This model is universal, as it demonstrates sufficient rigidity not only on new routes, but also on bad roads, which we have plenty of.
  • "Highway". This SS20 kit is best installed for motorists who often make long-distance trips. Despite the high rigidity, the shock absorbers also provide a soft ride in the city.
  • "Sport". From the name you can understand what the racks are intended for. CC20 “Sport” is best used by fans of sports racing and street racing, as they have maximum rigidity.

The kit includes supports, bumpers and reliable sound insulators.

The manufacturer made supports specifically for the Priora, since the components intended for previous models were not suitable for the VAZ 2110. You don't have to think about modifications; all the necessary parts are already included in the kit.

Kayaba stands

If you want to know which racks from foreign manufacturers are best to install on the 2170, then pay attention to Kayaba products. The Japanese company specializes in the manufacture of chassis components for foreign cars, but there are also options for Russian cars

Some Priora owners prefer to install shock absorbers designed for the “ten”. We recommend spending time finding a kit specifically for the 2170. For the Priora, the company offers gas-oil rear and front components; the kit is called Exel-G. The release began recently, so you won’t be able to find them right away.

If you are a fan of do-it-yourself modifications and looking for various components, you can purchase the Kayaba kit for the “ten”. But for proper installation you will have to buy collapsible glasses from Priora and install supports. As for the supports, they can be supplied from SS20. But such difficulties are caused only by the front struts; the rear struts are already assembled.

Kayaba racks are universal - they are suitable for both trails and roads with poor surfaces. High-quality components contribute to a comfortable ride even on rough roads, hence the high price. If you want to know which parts are better - from Kayaba or SS20, then motorists are confident in the leadership of the Japanese manufacturer.

Manufacturers and prices of analogues

  • A frequently used analogue of Priora struts is the SS-20.
  • SS-20 are sporty, they provide greater “strength” of the suspension, and cost accordingly.
  • The front part number is SS20118, they cost 6,000 rubles for two pieces. However, there is one “but” - the SS-20 must be installed together with supports that fit the fasteners.
  • The price of Priora struts is not that high, because the SS-20 company sells them as a kit. A set of rear shock absorbers costs 5,200 rubles, article number – SS20144. This company has several model lines - standard, sport, comfort, optimal.
  • There is an analogue from Trialli: AH-01159 on the left, AH-01360 on the right, the price is 1,900 rubles each. Front shock absorbers at a low price - from Pilenga: SH-P 2771 - O on the left, SH-P 2770 - O on the right. Cost: 1,600 rubles. In terms of replacing rear components, you can take a closer look at Fenox A12288C3 (1,200 rubles) and KraftKT 073542 (1,200 rubles).
  • There is an expensive analogue - Kayaba struts for Priora. They are called KYB EXCEL-G (front), the price of the set is 6,000 rubles, the complete rear set will cost about 6,100 rubles.
  • An analogue of Demfi is sold under the article number ITM70-2905002, ITM70-2905003, price - 2,100 rubles (front), ITM70-2915004, cost - 1,300 rubles (rear). The model range is quite wide: gas, hydraulic options, and there is an adaptation for a lowering spring. Branded shock absorber mounts for Lada Priora are for sale.

Replacement - (removal and installation) of front and rear struts on Priora

Choose devices based on quality and your needs. To replace the front struts of the Priora, you will first have to prepare several bolts (if the threads have to be knocked off), a support bearing, a pair of boots, new steering tips and bump stops. If the suspension is completely loose, you can purchase a support for it. When replacing shock absorbers you will need the following tools:

  • pliers;
  • a set of keys;
  • hexagon "6";
  • puller for pressing out hinges;
  • jack;
  • supports;
  • screeds;
  • lubricant;
  • wheel wrench;
  • rags;
  • spring puller;
  • hammer;
  • metal brush.

What are racks?

Car dampers themselves are ordinary shock absorbers. That is, devices that make it possible to better smooth out jerks from uneven roads for the driver. The operating principle of the stand is based on the piston effect of a syringe. Only the substance filling the cylinder is not squeezed out, but passes through special valves through the piston itself. This allows you to soften unexpected jerks and jolts of the Priora. Depending on the type of filler, there are three types of shock-absorbing struts.

  1. Hydraulic.
  2. Gas.
  3. Pneumohydraulic.

As a rule, hydraulic shock absorbers are installed on them. But already during operation, many car owners change them to gas ones.

Hydraulic struts

The basis of hydraulic struts for Priora is a special oil. Most often it is ordinary spindle oil. Even if the liquid has some special name, you should not delude yourself. The basis there is precisely the spindle. This is the most convenient filling for the shock absorber. Therefore, all hydraulic struts work on it. This oil is compressed and flows through the valves to operate the shock absorber.

Gas shock absorbers

The basis of the gas pneumatic strut is a special container filled with inert gas. It is he who, moving better, does the work of the Priora shock absorber. Therefore, the basis of the gas strut is a block containing this gas.

Pneumohydraulic shock absorbers

These are compensators that are filled with a mixture of gas and hydraulic fluid. They have special valve calibration. This type of strut is considered the softest of all shock absorbers, holding the road better.

Important! When choosing replacement struts, you must first estimate what type of surface the car will drive on most.

This is due to the fact that hydraulic compensators, although more reliable, are somewhat harsh. Therefore, when choosing a new unit, you need to focus on the type of road. For good, smooth roads with high-quality surfaces, it is better to install purely hydraulic struts. If you have to drive a lot on dirt or broken asphalt roads, you need combined pneumatic-hydraulic shock absorber struts.

Replacing the front struts on a Priora car will be carried out in the following order:

  1. Lock the car with the handbrake;
  2. Jack up the front end and place supports;
  3. Using a wheel wrench, moving clockwise, gradually loosen the wheel bolts, and then pull it towards you;
  4. Disconnect the brake hoses from the device;
  5. Remove the steering tip with a puller;
  6. Coat the bottom of the device being removed with lubricant. Attention! After this step, it is advisable to wait about 10-15 minutes for the lubricant to work well;
  7. Unscrew the bolts (you may have to remove the threads);
  8. Remove the bottom part of the device from the mount;
  9. Unscrew the nuts securing it to the body, remove the shock absorber;
  10. Secure the spring with plastic ties (this makes them easier to store);
  11. Place the hexagon at the top of the rod (there is a seat). This will keep it from spinning during the next step;
  12. The rod nut must be unscrewed, after which you can completely remove the shock absorber;
  13. Take out the compression limiter and then the bump stop;
  14. Finally, remove the spring, cup, damper, boot.

Installation is carried out in reverse order. Don't forget to check the front strut support bearing - it will most likely need to be replaced.

Replacement of rear shock absorbers (struts) on a Priora car is carried out with the same set of tools, but according to a slightly different principle:

  1. Shift into gear;
  2. Open the trunk, remove the trim above the wheel arches. You will see bolts - they secure the rear shock absorbers;
  3. Unscrew the bolts, holding them from turning;
  4. Jack up the car, place supports;
  5. Unscrew another fastening nut from below. If you can’t do it just like that, pour grease on the area;
  6. Remove the parts from the bracket;
  7. Installation is in reverse order.

It is ideal to finish replacing shock absorbers with a test on a bench - the wheels need to be aligned so that there are no misunderstandings and the car drives smoothly.
