LADA Kalina is a brand of the group, represented on the market since 2004 with budget small-class cars with front-wheel drive. The first generation was produced until 2013 in basic hatchback and station wagon versions; The second generation, starting from 2013, received a modernized body in the “Cross” and “Sport” versions, a 16-valve 1.6-liter engine with a four-speed automatic transmission and a new transmission with anti-roll bar, modified spring and shock absorber suspension design.
Over the entire production period, Lada Kalina was offered in three main trim levels, which were modified in accordance with European safety standards from Euro-2 to Euro-4.

Today Lada Kalina is offered in three main trim levels: standard, normal, luxury. The basic configuration of Lada Kalina 2 “standard” has two versions. The average “norm” has 5 versions, and the “luxury” has 6 versions. Today we’ll try to figure out how these versions differ.
The most affordable configuration of the Lada Kalina “standard” has versions 21921-40-010 and 1. The main difference is the presence of a modernized suspension and central locking; in all other respects the equipment is identical. The difference in price is several thousand rubles. A cheaper package without improved suspension costs 327,500 rubles. You will have to pay more for the presence of central locking and an upgraded suspension; the price of this version is 330,500 rubles. Competitors
Oddly enough, but most likely the new Lada Kalina 2022 model year will compete with models from its own manufacturer - Largus and Vesta. At the same time, Vesta will benefit from its much more modern external and internal components, while Largus has established itself as a reliable car, albeit with modest aesthetic indicators.
The Kalina developers, while maintaining almost the same interior design and not paying attention to updating the interior, thus betting on the success of the previous model, risk that the car may receive the status of an “outdated new product” and not live up to the expectations that are associated with it potential buyers.
At the same time, this model remains a good hatchback option, and thanks to its advanced modifications, it is a good intermediate option between a passenger car and a full-fledged crossover, allowing you to get the maximum practicality at a relatively low price.
Just five years ago, the range of station wagons and minivans on our market was quite decent, although in Russia there are still strong stereotypes that such cars are only suitable for pensioners. Our review will consist of three parts. In the first, we will look at station wagons in the price segment up to one and a half million rubles. In the second, we will pay attention to expensive station wagons, whose price tags begin after the announced mark. For starters, let's take a virtual tour of the dying minivan market.
In the price segment up to a million rubles, only localized models remain. These are, of course, VAZ products, as well as cargo-passenger versions of the Ford Focus, Hyundai i30 and Kia cee'd. Plus the Hyundai i40 class D+ and the interclass Skoda Octavia Combi. Until recently, the concern's brothers Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze were available, but with the departure of GM we lost them.

The Kia cee'd SW is a rare case: the station wagon version is almost as popular as the hatchback. The Sid turned out to be very balanced - stylish appearance, quite decent handling and good dynamics. True, for our market the range of engines ends with a 1.6-liter unit. And, of course, the most important trump card is the price. A basic station wagon with a manual transmission and a 100-horsepower engine is offered for 814 thousand rubles, which is 150 thousand cheaper than its closest competitor, the Ford Focus. It is not surprising that in Russia the Kia cee'd has become the most popular non-VAZ station wagon.
Sid's equipment cannot be called completely empty - front and side airbags, audio system, multifunction steering wheel, ABS, etc. The main drawback is that the suspension is not the most energy-intensive, which severely lacks a safety margin on large potholes. The trunk opening has become a victim of style - it is very narrowed at the bottom and top, which reduces cargo capacity.

The most expensive luxury package is offered only with 16-valve engines producing 106 hp (manual) and 98 hp (automatic). In addition to air conditioning or a climate system, you can count on alloy wheels measuring 14 or 15 inches (depending on the version) plus a multimedia system with a monitor in the center console.

A quick glance at the line of new Lada Kalinas did not reveal any significant changes. Upon closer inspection, door moldings, alloy wheels and black painted door frames were noticed. These are the main differences between the new “Norma+” and “Lux” trim levels from the previous “Standard” and “Norma”. Moreover, any version can be equipped with either an 8-valve 1.6-liter engine or a 16-valve 1.4-liter engine. It is worth noting that cars with different engines are identical on the outside.

On the first day of testing, we had to drive 300 km to the Black Stones recreation center, not far from the city of Sortavala. First, we chose a car with a completely new 1.4 liter engine, which develops 90 hp. The engineers of the AvtoVAZ scientific and technical center managed to achieve this by lightening the connecting rod and piston group and increasing the length of the connecting rod. The result was a reduction in mechanical losses and, as a result, an increase in power. True, to achieve tolerable dynamics, like any other small engine, it has to be thoroughly “twisted” - there is practically no thrust at the bottom. Peak power is reached at 5600 min-1, and at 4000 min-1 a maximum torque of 130 Nm develops. The engine spins up to 6500 rpm, but there is no point in this. The acceleration intensity drops significantly as the maximum power characteristics are overcome at 5600–5800 min-1. As for acoustic comfort, after 100–120 km/h you have to listen to your interlocutor. Aerodynamic noise is kept to a minimum, but the engine hum cannot be eliminated.

On the section between the settlements of Palalahta and Leppäsilta, which is approximately 70 km, there is a high-speed highway with gentle, long turns and long straights. This area was ideal for testing at maximum speed. According to the passport, Lada Kalina with a 1.4 liter engine should accelerate to 167 km/h. The 160 km/h limit is easy for the car. But then it begins to react strongly to descents and ascents. The record for such a high-speed run was 180 km/h, of course, according to the speedometer...

At high speeds, it is worth sticking to the correct trajectory. Sudden movements of the steering wheel can lead to unwanted body sway. The steering wheel is not very informative. You feel this especially in the zero zone. In other words, the driver has to constantly steer. And the high ground clearance of 160 mm does not have the best effect on the car’s behavior: the air flow tends to tear the car off the asphalt at any cost. As for comfort, everything is in order here. The suspension handles both small and large irregularities well. At the same time, there is practically no noise in the cabin. Such flexible behavior on potholes was achieved through the installation of barrel springs.

The second day of the test drive involved visiting several checkpoints, where you could try the car in different guises - in the sand and on a winding asphalt road. We overcame these special stages in a car with a 1.6‑liter engine. Surprising but true. The 1.6 liter engine is inferior in most respects to the 1.4 liter engine. The power turned out to be 9 hp less, and the maximum rated speed was 5 km/h. Practice has confirmed the theory. The maximum power of the 1.6 liter engine is achieved at 5200 min-1, and the maximum torque of 120 Nm is achieved at 3000 min-1. On the track this is strongly felt when approaching maximum speeds. In terms of acceleration dynamics, the engines are very similar. It's hard to feel the difference of one second. But 1.4 liters is inferior to 1.6 liters in elasticity - you don’t have to “twist” it so much. And the pickup starts already at 2500 min-1.

During the return trip from Petrozavodsk to Sortavala, we managed to set two records. The maximum speed of a car with a 1.6-liter engine was 170 km/h according to the speedometer, which is 10 km/h less than what was achieved with a 1.4-liter engine. The second achievement was personal. The 300 km route was covered in just three and a half hours. This was largely achieved thanks to the politeness of Karelian drivers, who immediately gave way to the new Kalina.
The version with a 1.6 liter engine is also equipped with ABS from Bosch. Oddly enough, the rear brakes are not disc brakes, but regular drums. According to engineers, the introduction of an anti-lock braking system made it possible to reduce the braking distance by 10 meters. If we evaluate the intensity of the slowdown, then it has increased. You can feel more confident on loose and uneven surfaces. We were convinced of this by driving along a gravel road on the final third day. New configurations of Lada Kalina have two airbags - for the driver and front passenger. This is reminded by the SRS Airbag inscriptions on the steering wheel and front console. Fortunately, we didn’t have to test the pillows during our Karelian trip. Let's hope they work well.
Technical part
There are three types of power units for this car. All of them are gasoline. The weakest in the line is the 1.5-liter eight-valve engine with 80 horsepower, which migrated here from the “tens”. Despite such low power, this unit is capable of accelerating the car to 170 kilometers per hour. The engine is designed to meet Euro-3 emission standards. Torque is 120 Nm.
Next in the line is an in-line four-cylinder unit with 89 horsepower. Despite such a small displacement of 1400 cubic meters, the engineers managed to get 127 Nm of torque from this engine. The car takes the first hundred faster than the previous one, but at maximum speed it lags behind by 5 kilometers per hour. Thanks to the use of distributed injection, engineers managed to reduce consumption to 7 liters per 100 kilometers in mixed operating mode.
And our line is completed by a 98-horsepower gasoline unit with a volume of 1599 cubic meters. This is a gearbox with an in-line arrangement of cylinders. There are four of them here, as in other modifications. The peak torque of the unit is 145 Nm, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the 80-horsepower engine. The maximum speed of the car is 190 kilometers per hour. Despite the large volume, the fuel consumption of this engine is not much different from its predecessors. In average mode, Lada Kalina 1.6 consumes 7.2 liters per hundred kilometers.
If we consider the transmission, Kalina uses two types of gearboxes. The first is the familiar “mechanics”, and the second is a robotic AMT. It was developed jointly with German engineers. The mechanics have hardly changed over the 12 years of its existence. But a few years ago, AvtoVAZ engineers switched to a cable drive. This made it possible to reduce the wear of rubbing parts and increase the service life of the box as a whole. The gears no longer “walk” as before, but you can turn them on with two fingers. This is a great success. Finally, the car began to meet European standards. But the developers did not decide to stop there.

Design
The car looks very impressive. If you remove the brand emblem from the radiator grill, the Lada Kalina can really be confused with a foreign car. Especially in the Lime color. Although the platform that served as the basis for the car is entirely a Russian development. Body dimensions have remained virtually unchanged for more than 10 years. If we consider the Lada Kalina hatchback, its length is 385 cm, width – 170, height – 1500. In the station wagon body, the car has “gained weight” by 19 centimeters. In this case, the curb weight of the car is 1100 kilograms.
Those who prioritize a large trunk volume should pay attention to the station wagon. The hatchback is already a more youthful version. It looks very dynamic, especially on alloy wheels. But they only come as a complete set. The ground clearance of the car is 16 and 18 centimeters for the hatchback and station wagon, respectively. The short wheelbase makes it easy to maneuver in traffic and to park without any problems if there are no free spaces.
The design of the car turned out to be very modern. And although only the bumper, grille and headlights are among the changes, the updated Lada Kalina 2016 looks much more impressive than its predecessor. The optics deserve special attention. The headlights here are lensed, and in the bumper, in addition to fog lights, there are daytime running lights. They come already in the basic configuration. Arches and moldings can be in body color.
By the way, the arches have become more muscular compared to the previous Kalina. It would seem that 15 inches is enough for such a car (meaning the wheels). But even they look small on the 65 tire profile. This gives the future owner great potential for tuning. But there is also a “Sport” modification. There are already 16-inch cast, spoked wheels. They look very impressive.

Safety
The serial Lada Kalina was modified not only in the technical part. A beautiful and dynamic car must meet all safety standards. So, AvtoVAZ engineers modified the car body by installing additional bars in the doors. This saves your chances in a side collision. The frame itself is made of stronger sheets of steel. They did not forget about active safety. Thus, already in the basic configuration, the car is equipped with a brake force distribution system and directional stability stabilization.
The latter was developed and implemented thanks to close cooperation with. Now the car has become more maneuverable and predictable to drive. And since the laws of the Russian Federation do not allow driving a car without DRLs, they are already included “in the database.” Belts with pretensioners are equipped with electronic sensors that will sound an alarm if the driver is not fastened and begins to drive. And the red light on the instrument panel will light up. There are also airbags here. There are two of them - front ones for the driver and front passenger. Unfortunately, there are no side ones even in the top version.
