The well-known Lada Kalina brand is a passenger car produced by AvtoVAZ, produced since November 2004.
The model is one of the ten most popular cars in Russia; it is produced not only in Tolyatti, but also at the automobile plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan).

Assembly of the first generation Kalina was carried out until the spring of 2020; the car was produced in hatchback, sedan and station wagon bodies.
In May of the same 2020, a new project Lada Kalina 2 was launched into series, but this model has already begun to be produced in only two body styles - station wagon and hatchback.
The Kalina Cross modification appeared in 2022, and although it is built on the Universal base, it has a number of significant differences.
There are ongoing debates whether the new Kalina is a second-generation car; some fans of VAZ cars believe that this is simply a deep restyling of its predecessor.
But the Lada Cross has quite a lot of updates, and what the car represents is something we have to figure out.

Against the background of the constant appearance of new cars on the world market, the Lada Vesta of the 2015 model year is not such a new product. However, it can still be considered the discovery of the Russian car market thanks to its very modern appearance and well-thought-out technical “stuffing”. The sedan's exterior was designed by ex-Mercedes-Benz and Volvo designer Steve Mattin, and was among the first people lucky enough to sit in it.
The raised cross-country hatchback Lada Xray, which AvtoVAZ dubbed a crossover for advertising purposes, is called by many the highest quality model of the domestic manufacturer, and there is indeed reason for this. Firstly, there is an abundance of high quality imported parts, and secondly, this car has decent ground clearance and a proprietary 1.8-liter engine.
Cars nowadays don't work on anything. There are even hydrogen ones that literally “live” on fuel cells. Water is, of course, good and incredibly environmentally friendly, but it is still painfully unpopular and expensive to implement. Is it compressed natural gas or, as it is also called, methane in a cylinder, like the new version of Lada Vesta CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)! A gas sedan is cheaper.
5- and 7-seater Lada Largus station wagons appeared on the Russian market in 2012, becoming a kind of continuation of the cheapest Renault Logan model, only under the auspices of a domestic manufacturer. As you might guess, the Logan-like Largus turned out to be the first Lada car built on the basis of the budget B0 platform, on the basis of which a number of Lada, Renault and Nissan models were designed.
If the image doesn’t bother you, you like the ground clearance, like a jeep, and in addition, you’ll admire the large capacity in the form of a 5/7-seater interior and a huge trunk, and “not expensive” - that’s all, we’ve arrived. Yes, not on anything, but on a raised Lada Largus with a talking Cross prefix and, of course, DNA from Renault Logan. This model, first presented to Russians in 2015, has no competitors.
The domestic auto industry never ceases to amaze. For example: when the Russian press first said that AvtoVAZ was preparing a “sports” version of the second Lada Kalina in a hatchback body, it was more difficult to get a new product for a test drive than another Bentley or Mercedes. Amazing, right? For VAZ people there is nothing special about this: not many significant new products are released after all.
What is a 3- or 5-door Lada 4×4 with the Urban prefix? Some kind of supernova Niva? In relation to an off-road passenger car from the glorious city of Togliatti, these words smack of piercing irony. New, of course - it’s been around for almost 40 years, of which 10 years the model has not been called Niva. But somehow I can’t seem to forget about my “maiden name”... So, what does “urban” promise?

Now is the time to look into the cabin and find out if there is anything new and intriguing there? Unfortunately, the interior of the cabin has not undergone any restyling; it is completely copied from its predecessor Lada Kalina. All the same gray-black tones and the same quality of upholstery materials.
However, in order to somehow brighten up the gloom and add some “sunshine”, the artists diluted the interior with light orange inserts, which significantly transformed the atmosphere in the car’s cabin. “Orange decoration” can be seen on the seat cushions, on the trim panels of all doors, around the side ventilation deflectors, and even under the steering wheel spokes. Honestly, this contrast makes the interior of the crossover more optimistic and even improves the mood.
In all other respects, this is the same standard Kalina, presented in the only “Norma” configuration so far. AvtoVAZ management announced its intentions to create more top-end equipment in the future. So far, the equipment of the Lada Kalina Cross includes the following options: electric heated front seats, heated side view mirrors, electric power steering, height adjustment of the steering column, electric windows on the front doors, comfortable headrests on the rear sofa, air conditioning system, standard audio system with the ability reading CDs and connecting removable media via a standard USB port, as well as pairing with other devices using Bluetooth technology.
A tandem of ABS+BAS systems takes care of traffic safety, and front airbags are provided for the driver and front passenger. To protect the car from theft, a standard alarm system is installed, as well as central locking with remote control. The interior configuration itself is five-seater, including the driver. The seats in both rows are quite comfortable, with fairly high-quality upholstery. There is enough space in the cabin, unless all passengers are large.
As for the capacity of the luggage compartment, in the standard position it is ready to provide owners with up to 355 liters of usable volume, and if the backs of the rear seats are folded, this figure increases to 670 liters. To transport large and fragile cargo, the trunk has special brackets for securing them. When developing this model, the designers also worked on improving the insulation of the interior from engine operation and external noise. To achieve this, additional soundproofing mats were installed above the rear wheel arches. Indeed, now inside the Lada Kalina Cross it has become quieter and more comfortable.
Equipment
Maximum equipment will allow you to get in this budget crossover the entire range of options that AvtoVAZ can now offer. But it’s still much more interesting to find out what will be included in the basic equipment. After all, the costs of optional components depend on this, for which you have to pay extra separately. This, as you understand, will directly affect the final cost of the crossover.
So, the basic equipment of the Lada Kalina Cross will include the following components:
- two front airbags
- BAS and ABS safety systems
- tilt-adjustable steering wheel
- electric power steering
- central locking with remote control function
- heated front seats
- headrests for the rear row
- climate system
- electric windows, but only on the front doors
- roof rails
- alloy wheels with a radius of fifteen inches.
As you can see, even the initial equipment of Kalina Cross looks very rich. Therefore, not every buyer will find it necessary to take something else as an option.
How to influence the amount of clearance?
Installing tires with a large profile and diameter helps to forcibly “raise” Kalina’s ground clearance. Let's look at the example of wide tires 215/55/15. With an increase in the profile of such rubber by 5%, the ground clearance will increase by 1 cm. If we add another 5% to such a tire, we will get the car raised by 2.5 centimeters.
When increasing the standard wheels on the Lada Kalina, you need to remember the manufacturer’s recommendations. The maximum size of tires installed on AvtoVAZ for a regular Lada is 185/60/14, for a Cross — 185/55/15. It is allowed to install tires up to size 195/40/17. When installing tires of this size or larger, you need to think about how the wheel does not touch the arches when turning, as well as other consequences.
If you increase ground clearance by installing larger wheels, pay attention to the distance to the arches. If the wheel does not touch the arches when the car is in running order, there may be contact when fully loaded
Take this into account.
The increased tire height shifts the Lada's center of gravity upward. Another consequence of increasing the profile is that the weight is more likely to deform the rubber. Accordingly, the risk of capsizing when entering a turn at high speed increases (the roll increases). However, in addition to increasing clearance, there is a plus from large wheels. Impacts from uneven road surfaces are absorbed more smoothly and the ride becomes smoother.

What does the manufacturer testify to?
The fuel tank for Lada Kalina 2nd generation can be made of metal or a plastic product.
The regulatory tank volume, which the manufacturer describes in its manual, is 50 liters. This figure would be a useless figure if owners were not aware of the actual fuel consumption. Here the manufacturer claims a figure varying from 6.7 liters to 7.8 liters. The indicated “run” of values is directly influenced by factors such as:
- type of motor used;
- installed transmission option;
- driving mode;
- level of equipment (consumption increases in more expensive versions due to the use of a greater number of auxiliary comfort systems);
- driving style (taken into account by the owners themselves).
By the way, the manufacturer regulates the use of only 95 gasoline for all types of Lada Kalina units.
Today there is no owner who would not be “scared” by increased fuel consumption. For small cars in the budget category, to which Kalina actually belongs, the psychological barrier appears at around 10 liters per “hundred”. After this, the owner needs to contact the service to find out the reasons for such an excess from the manufacturer’s standards.

And now - away with the economy! Three days behind the wheel of the new Kalina - and even the author, who is “well over forty”, prefers the youth model. That is, “Cross”. All-terrain capability, non-standard appearance, smart suspension. Drive, finally!
It’s just that the “Kalina” station wagon seemed somewhat pensioner-like, despite the 16-valve engine. And something tells us: buyers will look for peace of mind, coziness and comfort in cars from other automakers.

Changes to the Kalina Cross suspension
Depending on how loaded the car is, ground clearance varies from 208 mm (completely empty) to 188 mm (fully loaded). One way or another, progress in this direction is obvious. The crossover's ground clearance is 2.3 cm higher than that of the station wagon. This begs the question: how did the domestic auto industry manage to achieve such significant figures? This really required making a lot of changes: -original gas-filled shock absorbers were installed; - suspension elements have been reconfigured; -The location of the spring supports has been changed. Thus, the new chassis made it possible to achieve an increase of 16 mm. The remaining 7 mm were gained thanks to alloy wheels (tires 195/55R15, diameter 15). The wide tires installed in the new model also played an important role. They increased the track of the front and rear wheels by 4 mm. This, in turn, forced the designers to reduce the steering rack travel by 3.6 mm and increase the turning radius to 5.5 meters. For comparison, for the Lada Kalina station wagon this figure is 5.2 meters.

Lada Kalina Cross will pleasantly surprise its buyer with elegant moldings with the Cross inscription on the side doors, black plastic trims installed on the sills, stylish metal inserts on the bumpers, roof rails and almost off-road ground clearance. What is missing? Alas, no matter how much all-wheel drive is requested in such a kit, the AvtoVAZ crossover can only boast of front-wheel drive.
Real Driver Measurements
But how to determine the real clearance of a Lada without a full load? Real measurements with a tape measure (without load) show the following results.
A special experiment was carried out. Its essence is to compare the veracity of the clearance ratio of a regular Lada and a Cross. To achieve this, four subjective measurements were made. The distance was measured from the road to the side threshold, under which the jack is placed.
To conduct the experiment, the cars were placed in the same conditions. Both cars had an empty interior, an unfilled trunk and the same minimum amount of fuel in the tank. The standard Lada station wagon was equipped with radial tires with a width of 175 mm, a profile of 55% and a seat diameter of 14 inches. The cross version is shod with tires with a width of 195, a profile of 55 and a diameter of 15.
First, we measured the ground clearance of a regular Lada Kalina station wagon without load. The resulting value is 198 mm. Then we got 217 mm as a result of a similar measurement on Kalina Cross. Before the second measurements, four people were asked to sit in the cars one by one. A loaded regular station wagon gave a result of 170 mm. After loading, the clearance of Kalina Cross was 192 mm.
Lada Kalina is one of the most practical and best-selling creations of AvtoVAZ. The model enjoyed considerable popularity, thanks, first of all, to its cost and adaptability to the realities of Russian roads. This largely applies to Kalina’s ground clearance. When it began production in 2004, the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina was 160 millimeters - one might say, the golden mean among passenger cars. After updating the model in 2013, the range of ground clearances of the model expanded - a clearance of 145 millimeters was added, and the ground clearance of the cross-country version of the Cross station wagon became as much as 183 millimeters. The design of the car itself did not allow it to be done even more - it was necessary to make significant changes to the design of the Kalina suspension.

Technical characteristics of Lada Kalina Cross
Well, it remains to consider the rather important question of how well the off-road body kit and the ambitions of a crossover station wagon correspond to the real capabilities of the power unit. The new product is offered to potential buyers with two powertrain options. The youngest in the line is an in-line naturally aspirated petrol engine with 4 cylinders and 8 valves.
Its displacement is 1.58 liters, it is capable of developing a power of about 87 horsepower, and the torque on the shaft is 140 Nm when reaching 3700 rpm. This engine is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. With this tandem, the Lada Kalina Cross is capable of reaching speeds of up to 165 km/h on good surfaces. And the car can reach the famous “hundred” in 12.7 seconds. AvtoVAZ designers changed the gear ratio in the gearbox, which is now 3.9 instead of the previous 3.7, and this has slightly improved and optimized the operation of the transmission. This engine turned out to be quite economical; fuel consumption per 100 km is within 7 liters. The second, more solid engine is also a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, but its power has increased to 106 horsepower thanks to the presence of a system of 16 electronically controlled valves. Accordingly, the torque indicator also increased by several units, which means that traction also increased. For this version of the engine, it is assumed that it will be coupled not only with a manual transmission, but also with a 4-band automatic transmission. It is also possible to install on a vehicle a robotic gearbox recently developed at the enterprise, which has more optimal characteristics.

In 2014, mass production of the Lada Kalina Cross all-terrain station wagon
. On August 18, AVTOVAZ announced the release of the first 36 units of this Kalina model. They were intended for the first presentation and demonstration at the Moscow Motor Show, as well as various tests. And already in the fall, a large-scale test drive was carried out in Kazakhstan in various modes, which showed excellent results. The car was good both in the steppe and on uneven asphalt. Safety tests have revealed that the crossover meets all European requirements.
The car has almost passed certification, and AVTOVAZ announced a preliminary start of sales in September. But in fact, this model entered the car market only in winter. A new car showroom was opened in Lipetsk on December 5th. There, Oleg Grunenkov, director of the Kalina project, spoke about plans to produce a station wagon. At that time, 15 cars came out of the car plant’s assembly line every day, but there were plans to further increase production. Everything indicated that the model Kalina Cross should be popular in Russia.
After some time, a version appears with a more powerful 1.6-liter engine with 106 horsepower. Real car clearance measurements
Let's determine the ground clearance without applying the previously specified regulatory load. How to do it? Let's use a tape measure. We summarize the results of real measurements in a table.
An interesting experiment was carried out, the purpose of which was to check the veracity of the ratio of the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina in its usual version in comparison with the “Cross” version. For this purpose, 4 measurements were performed. The ground clearance was measured from the road surface to the side sill with the preliminary installation of a jack. For the purity of the experiment, it was necessary to place both cars in identical conditions. Both Kalinas were presented for testing with empty interiors and luggage compartments, as well as with a minimum of fuel in the tanks.
The regular version of the Kalina was shod with 14-inch radial tires of 175 width and 55 profile. The “cross” variation received 15-inch tires, the width and profile dimensions of which were respectively “195x55”.
The first to be measured was the Lada Kalina 2 in its standard version. In the no-load state, the ground clearance reached 198 mm. During the measurements, the “cross” version received a ground clearance of 217 mm.
At the next stage, 4 people were seated in the test cars one by one. When loaded, a regular station wagon gave a ground clearance of 170 mm. When Kalina Cross was loaded, the clearance level dropped to 192 mm. As a result, the additional weight managed to lower the ground clearance of the regular version by 28 mm, and the Cross version by 25 mm. Here, a modified suspension and wheels with a larger diameter played a role.
Luggage compartments of Kalina
The Lada Kalina station wagon of the second generation has a good advantage, expressed in the ability to quickly and easily transform the luggage compartment to a much larger capacity. In the standard state, the usable space of this body version is 355 liters, which in comparison with the hatchback looks decent, because the trunk volume of the latter reaches only 240 liters. In the universal variation, the developers managed to very competently plan the luggage compartment, despite the modest overall parameters of the body.
For example, in a sedan the trunk volume in the standard state is larger and reaches 400 liters. However, if you fold the backs of the rear seat row in a station wagon, the useful volume for luggage increases to 670 liters, which is 120 liters more compared to performing a similar manipulation with the seats of the Lada Kalina hatchback.

The amount of extraneous noise has significantly decreased - in order to achieve this effect, the car was added with vibration and noise insulation materials in the area of the floor and engine compartment, rubber seals were installed in places where they simply did not exist before, and the door upholstery was also improved at the points where they were attached to body with “hedgehogs” (and the “hedgehogs” themselves too). An additional contribution to acoustic comfort was made by the sound-absorbing flaps of the rear wings, integrated into the rear wheel arches - with their supply, the noise from stones and lumps of dirt flying from under the wheels is almost not annoying.
In terms of reliability, Kalina Cross cannot be called an excellent performer. Firstly, because the “base” has one airbag - for the driver. You have to pay extra for an airbag for the front passenger, and there are no other “airbags” at all. Secondly, the rear passengers have only two headrests by default - the third is offered only for an additional fee. Well, thirdly, the only electronic assistants available are emergency braking assistance systems (BAS) and brake force distribution (EBD), and an anti-lock braking system (ABS). At least, this is what the simple central console of the Lada Kalina Cross claims, which does not have a display without physical buttons even for an extra charge. Here the main place is given to a modest radio with a miniature screen, an SD card slot, 4 speakers and a USB connector. Oh yes, there is also Bluetooth with Handsfree, and many thanks for that. But to be honest: seriously, thank you that at least it’s not a niche for a new radio or even a plug. You can expect everything from Lada center consoles.
