At the end of last week, we visited a completely fresh Lada Granta, which we did chip tuning. Engine 1.6 with 8 valves and 87 hp. The exhaust system was replaced with a kit from the Stinger, so Euro-2 firmware was required with modified fuel supply schedules, OZ, etc.

Lada Granta cars were equipped with M74 units with K-line or CAN interfaces. We will program this unit by removing it from the car and connecting it on the table. What’s noteworthy is that the unit has a CAN bus, but “wanted” to be programmed only via K-Line.

For work we will use the original J2534 Openport 2.0 adapter, a universal Combiloader cable and a bootloader from the same manufacturer.

Should I flash the 8 valve grant or not?

It’s still better after a full run-in. It’s generally better not to turn the engine until 2-3 thousand km (some don’t turn it even up to 5 thousand). The optimal way is to go through TO-0 (you can do it ahead of schedule - I had it done by an “unofficial” after 3000 km) and fill in normal synthetics, adjust the valve clearances, and check the compression of the cylinders. The fact is that the Grants coming out of the factory are, to put it mildly, of “uneven” quality.

That is, if you really want to get results from chip tuning and new driving pleasures, you should first put the car in order. Then there will be more pleasure and less disappointment!

Added after 20 minutes the power does not increase. You can increase the cyclic fuel supply, for example, change the quality of the mixture in certain engine operating modes, and the most important thing is to turn off the lambda probes, which greatly choke the engine and, believe me, the car will accelerate an order of magnitude faster. from myself: I had 2 21124, one chip, the second standard. And the reason for this is that the firmware is written for an engine with average parameters, and given the quality of our spare parts (even those supplied to the assembly line), the result is different.

This is not a racing car, but there is enough power for both city driving and highway driving. If we compare it with the 16-valve engine of the Lada Granta, which is installed on the Luxury versions, then it has more torque at the bottom. This means that you can drive in 5th gear at a speed of 40 km/h.

For example, you are driving at 5 speed, the traffic light in front lights up red. You release the gas pedal and the car brakes with the engine. The light turns green and you can continue driving in 5th gear even if the vehicle speed has dropped to 40 km/h.

From this we can conclude that any self-respecting driver should still make adjustments to the program.

Global brands such as Mugen and Revo only tuning certain brands of cars, and their approach is very different from non-professionals. As soon as a new engine appears, such companies purchase a car with this engine and send it to their software engineers for modification. It takes months to create tuning firmware. At the same time, several versions are being developed at once, and each of them is tested in different situations: highway mode with a partially open throttle, city mode (gas-brake), endurance testing and track mode, when all systems work at the limit of their capabilities. If the company is confident in the firmware, dealerships offer customers (with their consent) to try the beta version. The offer is being distributed in several countries around the world to test tuning in different climatic conditions, with different fuel quality. If, after a certain time and mileage have passed, no problems are detected on these cars, the firmware appears in the public domain.

I switched to this car from the Renault Megane 2. My Renault was equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, a power of 113 horses, and the number of valves was 16.

After it, the Granta engine works like a tractor. Regardless of the car's mileage. Even the engine on the carburetor VAZ-21093 seemed quieter to me.

I specifically compared the noise level on a new Grant with a mileage of 5,000 km and on mine with a mileage of 55,000 km. As it warms up, the sound becomes quieter, but most likely you just get used to it.

  • All diagnostic functions and fault codes from the manufacturer are saved. If any breakdown occurs, diagnostics will show the cause. The exception is the transition to E2. In this case, errors that appear when changing the environmental standard are removed.

Results

Most Grant owners switched to them from previous AvtoVAZ products. Granta, Priora and Kalina are almost identical cars, the only difference is “in the filling”, and the ancestors of these engines were installed on the VAZ-2108.

By modern standards, the engines are reliable and should not cause trouble to their owners.

At the end of last week, we visited a completely fresh Lada Granta, which we did chip tuning. Engine 1.6 with 8 valves and 87 hp. The exhaust system was replaced with a kit from the Stinger, so Euro-2 firmware was required with modified fuel supply schedules, OZ, etc.

Lada Granta cars were equipped with M74 units with K-line or CAN interfaces. We will program this unit by removing it from the car and connecting it on the table. What’s noteworthy is that the unit has a CAN bus, but “wanted” to be programmed only via K-Line.

For work we will use the original J2534 Openport 2.0 adapter, a universal Combiloader cable and a bootloader from the same manufacturer.

Characteristics of automatic transmission

The idea to install an automatic transmission on the Lada came to AvtoVAZ in 2010, but was implemented only in 2011. A long-term contract was signed with the Japanese company Jatco, known for the quality of its variators and hydraulics.

The box is not the best in terms of technical parameters, but it has been tested on other models for several years. It is safe to say that all weak points are known, as well as ways to eliminate them.

Between 2006 and 2010, Jatco was installed on Nissan Note cars. Numerous reviews from owners speak positively about the results of operating the unit.

Installation of the machine was complex, as specialists had to make more than 30 settings and adjustments. They say that Austrian craftsmen took part in the calibration.

Excellent ergonomics of the box. The handle (curtain) is of optimal height and fits comfortably in the hand. In the selective part there are icons for viewing. The mode is duplicated directly on the dashboard.

At the same time, fixing the lever in one position is questionable. Different operating modes of the machine are possible:

  • fixed first and second gear;
  • a mechanical button to disable the “overdrive” option - prohibiting the transition to fourth speed.

You can “forget about going into third gear” if the oil has not warmed up above 15°C. Fourth is activated at 60°C.

It is important to know. The design of the power plant does not include a flywheel, but a drive disk.

Due to the transmission housing, the body height has decreased by 1.5 cm. The automatic transmission control unit is located on the left front side, behind the optics. Many car owners are not happy with this, since in a head-on collision the risk of damage to the module is 100%.

The operating modes of the car are configured for driving in the city, on the highway, outside the city, and to a lesser extent, the box is adaptive for driving on country roads. The noise level is minimal.

How does the electronic unit on Grant work?

Before making changes to the car's firmware or performing diagnostics, you need to consider the basic principles. As much as some would like to jump right into making practical changes, you need to understand how the electronic “brain” works.

Any computing system, be it an ECU or a home PC, is a storage device. A home PC contains photos, videos, games, and work software. The computer constantly stores the user’s actions, errors, and data about software failures. All this is hidden among system files hidden from view.

The Lada Granta electronic control unit is also a computer, only the tasks it is designed to solve are more specific. There is also diagnostic information here. It is stored in RAM. This memory stores all the data that comes from various sensors. Information is stored until the block calculates everything it needs for some actions, then the information is erased from memory.

When it comes to diagnostic information, the car owner must be very careful. RAM cannot operate without a power source.

The control unit is a mini computer with specialized functionality

However, in addition to the RAM, there are other memory blocks of the controller. They are completely independent of nutrition. The data stored in them is unchanged. Unchangeable until new firmware is updated. These are PROM and ERPZU.

The first chip stores all the firmware data that was made at the factory. All the original algorithms and operation schemes of all nodes are embedded here. All diagnostic information, calibration data, vehicle weight, engine power and other Grant parameters are also stored here.

The second chip stores anti-theft information. Here are the codes that are on the alarm keys. If the codes do not match, then Grant will not go.

Tuning the Grant chassis

The Lada in its new guise has acquired a soft suspension system, which was created, in particular, for people who love a comfortable ride, and this really becomes noticeable in comparison with previous models. Any tuning of the chassis and suspension can make the ride more rigid, which improves handling, but at the same time the margin of comfort is lost. Changes can be made better on your own by reducing the coils of springs on the rear suspension of the car. There is no point in buying new springs, since they will lead to the suspension becoming stiff and uncomfortable. To provide a little stiffness, the springs are cut equal to one turn on the two rear springs. Stretching struts, which can also be installed on the front struts, can stretch the body a little, while giving torsional rigidity to the body. On sharp turns, such a change can give easy control at high speed, without tilting the body to one side. The strut extensions can be borrowed from the Lada Kalina model. In addition to the standard settings of the chassis, the levers, suspension and shock absorbers can be changed, which at the very beginning, even before rollback, are replaced with a similar option for the Lada Granta. To lower a car's suspension, you can use several methods.
