The Renault Logan model belongs to the budget segment, but is a fairly popular car due to its successful combination of reliability, quality and price. In practice, as is the case with many other public sector vehicles, owners often maintain such cars themselves.
As a rule, such maintenance should mean the replacement of technical fluids, filters, brake pads and other consumables. Also, according to the regulations, the Logan alternator belt is replaced. Next, we will look at how to change the Renault Logan alternator belt.
Replacing the alternator drive belt on a Renault Logan 1.4 car
We will carry out a scheduled replacement of the alternator drive belt (drive belt of auxiliary units) on a Renault Logan car with a k7j engine without power steering and air conditioning.
This version is the simplest: the generator drive belt is put on the generator pulley and the crankshaft pulley. To remove and replace such a belt, you just need to loosen its tension.
Preparatory work - We install the car on a pit or overpass. If they are not there, you can jack up and remove the right front wheel. This is necessary to gain access to the lower nut securing the generator to the car engine.
Necessary tools, accessories and spare parts - Spanners or heads for “13” and “16”
— New generator drive belt marked 4РК 718 (four-strand, 718 mm long)
In our case, this is a belt produced by Gates (Belgium) with a length of 718 mm.
The procedure for replacing the alternator drive belt of a Renault Logan car with a 1.4 k7j engine without power steering and air conditioning
— Loosen the tightening of the lower mounting of the generator
Using a “16” wrench, slightly loosen the nut on the bolt of the lower mounting of the generator to the bracket on the engine.
Renault Logan alternator lower mounting bolt
— Loosen the bolt securing the generator to the tension bar
Use a key set to “13” to loosen the bolt.
Upper bolt of the Renault Logan 1.4 generator
— We move the generator towards the engine
We move the generator slightly towards the engine with our hands to loosen the tension on the drive belt.
— We are replacing the generator drive belt
We remove the old belt and install a new one.
— Tension the generator drive belt
We move the generator away from the engine using a mounting tool so that the belt is tensioned. Slightly tighten the bolt of its upper fastening to fix the generator in this position.
Use the mounting tool to move the generator away from the engine and tighten its drive belt.
Using a finger or a steelyard, check the belt tension (8-12 mm with a force of about 10 kgf). If the tension meets the required level, finally tighten the bolts of the upper and then the lower mounting of the generator. If not, we make additional adjustments. Details about adjusting the belt tension: “Adjusting the tension of the generator drive belt of a Renault Logan 1.4 car without power steering and air conditioning.”
The tightening torque of the upper mounting bolt of the generator is 21 N.m, the lower mounting bolt is 44 N.m.
— Checking the operation of the generator
We start the engine, the battery charge indicator lamp in the instrument panel should go out, and no extraneous sounds (noise, whistle) should be heard from the generator drive side.
Notes and additions
— When the alternator belt fails (stretched, torn), the charging of the battery is reduced or completely lost. The low battery warning lamp in the instrument panel lights up.
— The recommended frequency of replacing the alternator drive belt on a Renault Logan car with a k7j engine without power steering and air conditioning is once every 60,000 km (simultaneously with replacing the timing belt). Check the condition of the belt and its tension every 15,000 km.

Follow these steps:
1.Check the belt tension by pressing your finger on it between the generator pulleys and the crankshaft. When pressed with a force of 100 N (10 kgf), the belt deflection should be 8-12 Nm.
To check the tension, you can use steelyard scales, pulling the belt branch with a hook.
2.adjustments To tension the belt, loosen the bolt of the generator attached to the tension bar.
3.Loosen the tightening of the generator bolt to the bracket.
4.Adjust the tension and tighten the belt bolt securing the generator to the tension bar with a torque of 21 Nm.
5.Tighten the generator mounting bolt to the bracket to a torque of 44 Nm.
6. To replace the belt, loosen its tension (see above) and remove the belt from the drive ones. Install.
7. Put a new belt on the pulleys and adjust it Cars.
tension, equipped with an air conditioning system.
On Logan Renault cars equipped with an air conditioning system, there are two possible layout options for auxiliary units: the air conditioning compressor and generator can be installed on different sides of the engine or on the same side; in the case of the first, two drives are used on the car: one: a belt for driving the generator, the second drive for the air conditioning compressor. In the second case, a drive belt is used, the tension of which is adjusted by a tension roller,
On vehicles in which the generator and air conditioning compressor are located on different sides of the engine
, drive belts, replace them in the following order.
1.belt Remove the air conditioning compressor drive by cutting it. Replace it.
2. its alternator drive belt (see above).
3.holder Install the belt (included with the air conditioning compressor belt drive) at the bottom of the crankshaft pulley.
4. Place the belt on the air conditioning compressor pulley and place it behind the holder that the pulley is installed on the crankshaft,
5. Slide the holder with the belt attached to it along the crankshaft pulley clockwise in the direction of the shaft as far as force allows. Install,
6. a special hook (included in the delivery kit for the air conditioning compressor drive belt): one side clings to the compressor mounting bracket, and the other (more bent) to the belt. The hook is installed to prevent the upper branch of the belt from jumping off the air conditioning pulley compressor.
7. Rotate the crankshaft so that the belt fits onto its pulley.
8.Remove the belt holder and hook. These devices are disposable and can be thrown away after use.
9. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions so that the air conditioning compressor drive belt takes the correct position on the pulleys.
On which, on cars, the generator and air conditioning compressor are located on the side of one engine
, replace the drive belts in the following order.
1.Open the hood and slightly unscrew the adjustment bolt of the belt tension device.
2.right Remove the front wheel and engine mudguards on the right side (see “Removing and installing mudguards and engine crankcase protection”)
3.Unscrew the two bolts securing the tension roller and remove it
Replace the tension roller every time the belt is replaced.
4.Install the new tension roller without fully tightening the bolts securing it.
5.Install a new drive belt.
Place the belt on the pulleys in such a way that the outer groove of the pulleys remains free.
6.Adjust the drive belt tension using the adjusting bolt.
The manufacturer-plant recommends checking the belt tension and monitoring it during adjustment using a special strain gauge tester. In this regard, there is no data on the magnitude of the deflection force of the belt branch for a certain technical documentation size.
In practice, you can approximately initially assess the correctness of the belt tension using the “thumb rule”: pressing on the belt branch with your thumb and determining the deflection using a ruler. According to the universal rule, if the center distance between the pulleys is from 180 to 280 mm, the deflection should be approximately 6 mm.
This method can only diagnose excessive belt loosening; therefore, for an accurate check and adjustment of tension, contact a service center.
7.Tighten the tension roller mounting bolts to a torque of 21 Nm.
8. Rotate the crankshaft three full revolutions so that the belt is in the correct position on the pulleys.
9.Recheck the belt tension and repeat the adjustment if necessary.
10.Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.
How to change the Renault Logan alternator belt yourself
The Renault Logan model belongs to the budget segment, but is a fairly popular car due to its successful combination of reliability, quality and price. In practice, as is the case with many other public sector vehicles, owners often maintain such cars themselves.
As a rule, such maintenance should mean the replacement of technical fluids, filters, brake pads and other consumables. Also, according to the regulations, the Logan alternator belt is replaced. Next, we will look at how to change the Renault Logan alternator belt.
Let's sum it up
Taking into account the above information, it becomes clear that replacing the Renault Logan alternator belt is not a complicated procedure and can easily be done with your own hands. However, it is important to choose the right belt and rollers and install the belt according to the diagram. Another nuance is the tension of the generator belt, which was discussed above in this article.
We also recommend reading the article on how to replace Renault Logan brake pads. From this article you will learn how to correctly change the pads on a Logan, as well as what needs to be taken into account as part of this procedure.
As a summary, we note that in order to avoid common mistakes, you should separately study the manual, its installation diagram, as well as how to properly tension the belt itself and with what force. This approach will allow you to perform the procedure correctly, and without damage to the belt itself and other mechanisms.
When to change the alternator belt
First of all, the alternator belt on Logan, as on many other cars, transmits rotation to the alternator rotor from the engine. In this case, the belt is a rubber product with a limited service life.
If the belt slips or breaks, the generator will not be able to work normally, the battery will not charge, which will, at a minimum, cause problems with the battery. Also, wear on the alternator belt leads to the appearance of extraneous sounds (the alternator belt whistles, squeaks, etc.).
For example, when driving in city conditions, as well as in hot climates, the belt will wear out faster. The reason is frequent engine starts, high temperatures under the hood, etc. In turn, if the car drives more on the highway at an average speed, the engine is started and stopped less often, blowing oncoming air at speed does not allow the engine compartment to overheat too much. Accordingly, rubber products “live” longer.
- As practice shows, the alternator belt on Renault Logan is quite reliable if we are talking about an original product installed at the factory. In this case, instead of changing the belt every 4 years, it is necessary to periodically inspect it and also check its tension. Inspecting the condition of the belt is recommended every 10-15 thousand kilometers.
Useful tips
As you can see, on a Renault Logan, replacing the alternator belt may be required at different times, since wear on different cars of the same make and model depends on a number of factors.
Also, if the belt is not original, its service life is strongly influenced by the quality of the installed product itself. Also, installation errors (for example, tightening the alternator belt) can cause premature failure of this element. (this also applies to rollers). In any case, during operation it is necessary to periodically (every 10-15 thousand km) check the general condition and tension of the alternator belt. Also, some car enthusiasts prefer to change the specified belt every 60-80 thousand kilometers or every 4-5 years, regardless of the condition of the belt.
We also recommend reading the article about what engines are installed on the Lada Largus. From this article you will learn about the types, types and features of engines on Largus, as well as what advantages and disadvantages this or that unit has on this model.
Of course, the alternator belt is not as important as the timing belt, but if it breaks or slips, it can cause problems with the alternator and battery, power steering, air conditioning, etc. To avoid unexpected breakdowns and malfunctions of the attachment, it is recommended to monitor the condition of the belt and replace it in accordance with the above rules and recommendations.
Renault Logan: alternator belt replacement
So, if the inspection reveals defects in the alternator belt, then the Logan alternator belt should be replaced. Also, a broken belt makes such a replacement an urgent procedure.
In any case, before replacing, you need to purchase a new product, taking into account the features (year of manufacture and type of internal combustion engine), as well as the vehicle’s equipment (for example, a Renault Logan alternator belt with air conditioning). At the same time, along with the belt, the roller may also need to be changed. You will also need the following tools: a jack, a set of wrenches, a hexagon.
- Please note that it is not difficult to select an alternator belt for Renault Logan, however, when choosing a new product, it is important to buy high quality products. The fact is that on the market there are both cheap solutions from little-known manufacturers and outright counterfeits of expensive brands. This means that the alternator belt, timing belt, rollers and other similar elements should be purchased exclusively from trusted outlets, and the originality of the product should also be checked separately.
- As for the replacement itself, it is not difficult to replace the Renault Logan alternator belt. The main thing is to adhere to the general rules and algorithm within the framework of this procedure. It is advisable to carry out all the work in a garage with a pit or raise the car a little on a lift. The negative terminal is also removed from the battery. By the way, you can replace the belt using jacks alone (without a hole), but the work will be more difficult.
- Having prepared everything necessary, the front right wheel is removed;
- Next you need to remove the mudguard;
- Afterwards, the tension roller bracket is aligned with the hole in the body (with a key set to “13”, turn the tensioner mounting bolt counterclockwise);
- Then you need to insert a hexagon “6” into the hole;
- The following steps will allow you to loosen the generator belt and remove it;
- The tension and support rollers also change (to remove the latter, you need to unscrew the fasteners with a “13” key, while the tension roller is secured with two bolts that can be unscrewed);
- If the rollers are in good condition, they do not need to be changed, but if this is possible, it is better to also replace the rollers every time you replace the belt;
- After replacing or checking the rollers (installation in the reverse order of removal), you can install a new Renault Logan belt. To do this, it is first put on the power steering pump pulley, then placed behind the support and tension rollers, then put on the generator pulley and the air conditioning compressor pulley;
- The final stage is tensioning the crankshaft pulley. Before installation, if the owner is performing the operation for the first time, it is advisable to study in advance the installation diagram for the alternator belt on Logan;
- Having put on the belt, all that remains is to adjust its tension using the tension roller (turning counterclockwise means tension, while clockwise means loosening the belt);
- After completing the adjustment, the tensioner mounting bolt should be tightened. At this point, replacing the alternator belt on Logan can be considered complete.
Also, after installing all the pulleys and tensioning the belt, you need to check its tension again. It should be remembered that too much tension is just as bad as too little tension. To check, just press the belt with your hand on the longest section between the pulleys or try to twist it. Normally, the belt between the pulleys, when pressed with a force of 10 kg, deflects by 1-1.5 cm.
After all the checks, you can connect the minus terminal to the battery and start the engine. Afterwards the quality of operation of the belt and generator is checked. During operation, no extraneous sounds, whistles, etc. should be heard. Further after 50-70 km. mileage, it is advisable to check the belt tension, and also inspect it for premature wear. If everything is normal, during operation you can adhere to the inspection intervals discussed above.
What problems might there be?
- A sign of a malfunction is an uncharacteristic whistle from the engine compartment (the belt is whistling). This suggests that most likely the pulley and belt have a strong deflection, therefore, using the tool, the belt tension is increased to eliminate whistling sounds. But if sound occurs due to a defective regulator or other problems, a new mechanism must be installed.
- The most radical option to eliminate whistling is to install a new belt and pulley.
- Whistling also occurs on parts with a broken regulator. If a whistle occurs and a malfunction of the regulator is determined, this unit is removed from its seat and installed.
- Also, the cause of malfunctions is the malfunction of the bearing elements. They break for various reasons. The owner of a French Renault Logan 1.6-liter car with power steering, when installing a new component, should rely on the advice of the Renault automaker when purchasing a new part.
Renault prefers Bosch generators and belts in this matter. It is these components and assemblies that are mounted on the sedan.
Now you can find many alternatives, but for normal operation you should install Bosch components.

When is it time to change the Logan alternator belt?
We monitor the condition of the belt
According to the regulations, the replacement interval for the Renault Logan drive belt is 60 thousand km.
More precise figures depend on the conditions of use of the machine and its characteristics . Therefore, sometimes a breakdown may occur earlier. The beginning of problems will be indicated by a whistle when turning on Logan electrical appliances.
If there is sound with or without a load, an urgent replacement is required.
When inspecting the alternator belt, you need to check it for any damage. If there is fraying or delamination on the edge of the attachment drive, it must be replaced immediately. Signs of wear include cracks and delaminations . If nothing is observed, then it is a matter of tension.
Accessory drive
A motor pulley, mounted on a shaft, transmits power to one or more other pulleys. It all depends on the configuration - it may include power steering with air conditioning (Fig. 1) or only power steering (Fig. 2). In the version without power steering, the belt transmits power to the generator.
Power steering + air conditioning
Only power steering
Generator only
The tension roller is present in the first two options. For the third case, the following is provided: the force, that is, the tension, is adjusted after loosening screw 5 (Fig. 3).
The regulations for all configurations are the same. According to it, inspection and checking the condition of the belt is performed every 15 thousand km. And replacement is carried out after 60 thousand km. And even if the external condition is good, the replacement is carried out anyway.
Types and causes of malfunctions
A thorough inspection of the belt can tell a lot about the functioning of the unit. For example, some characteristic signs of destruction indicate problems that will require the driver not only to replace the belt itself. Let's look at the types of destruction:
Small cracks on the ribs, located across.
Exposure to high temperatures and increased tension. As a rule, they appear due to natural wear and tear of the material. It indicates that the part has exhausted its service life by 80-90%.
Large and small pieces of rubber material peeling off from the strap.
Cracks appear parallel to the cord line. This is a sign of critical wear, when the belt has already used up 95-99% of its resource. It needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
The material is cut from the ribs and rolled into pellets between them.
Causes may include pulley wear, misalignment, or too little tension. It is necessary to inspect all rollers and adjust the tension. If extraneous noise occurs at the same time, you will need to buy a new belt.
The appearance of a shine or glossy tint on the back of the belt.
Most likely, on its way the belt encounters some part. The latter rubs against the material, leaving such a mark. Make sure there is sufficient tension and structural integrity.
Wear of the outer ribs or their partial destruction. May cause the belt to come off.
Misalignment of pulleys, which leads to distortion and accelerated wear.
Severe deformations on the ribs, the appearance of notches.
Most often, this happens due to the entry of a foreign object: a small stone or small part. It cuts into the material and, as it rotates, moves along the belt, leaving notches on the ribs.

Renault Logan 1st generation alternator belt replacement
In any Renault Logan configuration with power steering, 6 grooves are noticeable on the Logan generator pulley, not five. It will not be advisable to change anything, therefore, when installing the strap of auxiliary units, it is better to proceed this way:
Logan with power steering without air conditioning
- If there is power steering and air conditioning, it is allowed to occupy all the streams, in addition to the internal one.
- If only the power steering, you need to use all the streams, in addition to the external one.

Marking of the alternator drive belt on a car without power steering and without air conditioning is 4РК 718 (four-strand, 718 mm long).
To check the tension of the generator drive belt on a car without power steering and without air conditioning, use your thumb to press the belt in the middle between the generator and crankshaft pulleys.
With a pressing force of ~10 kgf, the belt deflection should be 6 – 8 mm.
To tension the belt, remove the right mudguard of the engine compartment (see “Removing the mudguards of the engine compartment.” Loosen bolt 4 of the lower generator mounting and bolt 2 of the generator mounting to the tension bar. Moving the generator away from the engine cylinder block with a mounting blade, tighten the belt. Tighten the bolts generator mountings.
Do not overtighten the belt! Excessive belt tension leads to premature failure of both the belt itself and the generator bearings.
When replacing the belt, loosen its tension (see above) and remove the belt from the crankshaft and generator pulleys. Marking of the alternator drive belt on a car without power steering and without air conditioning is 4РК 718 (four-strand, 718 mm long). Install the generator drive belt in the reverse order and adjust its tension. To accurately check the belt tension, you must contact a service center.

Replacing the timing belt Renault Duster, Logan, Sandero and Lada Largus
We can change the timing belt on the sixteen-valve 1.6 K4M and 1.4 K4J Renault engines without special tools...
According to the technical maintenance regulations, the TTS checks the condition of the timing belt every 15 thousand kilometers, and changes it along with the rollers every 60 thousand kilometers or after four years, whichever comes first.
Starting to replace the timing drive
Let's start changing the toothed drive belt, first loosen the wheel bolts of the right wheel, lift the car with a jack and remove the wheel. Then, having dismantled the metal engine protection, we place a support or jack under the pan. In the arch of the front pillar, remove the plastic protection against dirt, which is held on by two clips. One small clip is located on the top of the casing, and the other is on the bottom, like a “hedgehog”, and we simply pull it out of its seat.
Next, having opened the engine hood, we will move aside the fuel supply pipes to the ramp, the gasoline vapor exhaust pipe and the wiring harness and unscrew the six engine mount bolts with a wrench (16).
In the wing arch, a transverse bracket is attached to the top of the body, unscrew its upper bolt, and loosen the lower one on the lever a little and bend the upper part of the rod to the side.
Preparatory work
Installation of the drive belt is complicated by the fact that it is located in an inconvenient location. There won't be much space to work with, so it's best to put the car on a lift or use a pit. There is also a protective panel in the wing area. It must be removed by unscrewing the fasteners.
Once the car and a set of keys are prepared, you can begin. Be sure to take a bright flashlight to illuminate dark areas under the hood. You will also need rags. It is better to remove dirt from the pulleys, as well as various stones that could become clogged in the ribs
Please note that it is necessary to disassemble the structure only after the engine has completely cooled down
Checking and adjusting tension
To make sure, you should press the Renault Logan alternator belt at the points where there are marks.
The force should be 98 N and the deflection should be approximately 7 mm. You should press with your finger almost as hard as you can.
Checking the alternator belt
If the strap is adjusted correctly, it will not make any extraneous noise, including when the ignition is turned on at idle. If the package includes an air conditioner, it is not possible to adjust the tension, so the machine must be repaired or replaced . Without automation everything is much easier. How to tension correctly:
- 5K 1110 : the screws securing the bracket must be loosened. Return the adjusting screw to the correct place. Tension and secure the fasteners back.
- 4PK 718 : tighten the upper fastening screw, check the tension, loosen the screw again and so on until everything is back to normal. Tighten the fasteners last.
It is difficult to tension the Renault Logan drive belt correctly if it is equipped without power steering. Then the adjustment may take up to 40 minutes.
Do-it-yourself belt tensioning
This procedure has some differences on cars with different trim levels. Also with air conditioning, the adjustment is automatic. If your car is not equipped with a climate system, the belt is tensioned manually as follows:
- In configurations 5K**** (serial number), loosen the two screws that secure the bracket. Using the adjusting element, return it to its place. After adjustment, the mounting bolts are tightened back. The work is done with a hex wrench.
- In 4RK *** configurations, the upper mounting screw is tightened. After checking the tension, loosen it again if necessary. The bottom screw is tightened last.
