In the car's operating instructions, the manufacturer indicates that the front suspension of the Lada Vesta is independent and equipped with shock absorber struts (gas-filled). They are hydraulic, with a double-acting telescopic design. These struts consist of shock absorbers and coil springs (barrel-shaped), and the suspension kit, in addition to them, includes lower wishbones and anti-roll bars, this entire structure is mounted on a subframe.

The originality of the Lada Vesta suspension is due to a completely new approach to the problem of driving on domestic roads and creating a competitive car. Engineers tried to implement the most optimal technical solutions in the front suspension of the car.

A subframe was added, on which the motor support points (two) were located. It was decided to leave the MacPherson struts, since they are considered the most popular in the world. But the main feature of the new “West” suspension, the designers believe, is that, in contrast to the longitudinal extension of the “eight” and its wishbone, the manufacturer began to install an L-shaped lever with a caster angle of 5°. It bears all the main loads (longitudinal as well as transverse).

All these engineering innovations have led to excellent results:

  • Driving on straight sections of roads has become noticeably more confident, and steering sensitivity has increased significantly. It has now become much easier to determine what position the front wheels are in;

But, strangely enough, there was no blow. Glancing in the rearview mirror, I was convinced that the canister was rapidly moving away, continuing to slide along the road. It seems that she did not even change the trajectory of her movement.

Are you lucky? No, in fact, it was quite natural - the ground clearance of the new Lada Vesta Cross is more than 20 cm. Or 203 mm, to be extremely precise. The ground clearance here, by the way, is even greater than that of the average modern crossover. In order to achieve this, Togliatti engineers did not have to resort to the inappropriate use of tennis balls and other “collective farm” rubbish, which we so love to use when we need to quickly and inexpensively shoe another flea. Everything was done competently and scientifically. The new suspension is 25 mm higher than that of the “simple” Lada Vesta sedan, and at the same time it works even better! At least in my opinion.

We have already seen almost the same suspension on the Vesta SW Cross model. But, unlike the station wagon, which has reinforced rear springs designed for increased loads, here they were done without them. The front springs and all shock absorbers are the same for both the sedan and the station wagon. They also have absolutely identical “protective” body kits. It looks great, but in reality, it doesn’t protect anyone from anything. Well, perhaps from small stones flying from under the wheels of other cars. And even then, it’s unlikely.

I will not describe here the wheel arch extensions, door sills and decorative trim on the bumpers - all these details are clearly visible in our photographs. Let's get back to how the suspension works. She really surprises. The energy intensity is so high that it is simply impossible to “short-circuit” the springs and shock absorbers before they break through to the body. Speed ​​bumps of various sizes can be overcome without a shadow of a doubt. After a few kilometers of driving Vesta Cross, you involuntarily catch yourself starting to choose not the smoothest road, but, on the contrary, the most broken one. Potholes in the asphalt, protruding sewer manholes, ruts crushed by trucks - this is what we need. The car jumps over them with the enthusiasm of a rubber ball. Bumpy dirt road? Wonderful! Here we go. The old rally principle of “more travel, less holes” works one hundred percent in this case.

The car has a fairly deep track that is not a hindrance to which almost most crossovers will fail. The clearance allows you to fearlessly dive into it and easily jump back out. As we expected, under the shelf there is the same 480 liters as in the sedan. However, there is a bonus - a double floor, the niche under which promises another 95 liters. That is, if you remove the flooring, there will be at least 575 liters, which is already more interesting.

And if you fold the back seat, you get a cargo compartment of 825 liters. True, take a look at its floor: this, alas, is not a flat platform, but a three-stage cascade of the threshold, the “crater” of the trunk and the slope of the piled-up backrest. Men won't understand.

But there is a life hack: the organizer that marketers placed under the first floor level can save you.

The containers can also be taken out for washing or storing in the garage.

But if you place them in the trunk on top of each other, then they form a platform at the same level as the threshold and the back of the sofa - this way you can carry fragile long items without worrying that they will bend or break.

All this is a kind of work on mistakes that grow from the hasty launch of Vesta, because most of the current innovations were included in the design from the very beginning, but in order to reduce the cost of the car they were abandoned shortly before the start of production.

Steve Mattin’s team developed not only a “signature” color (red metallic Mars) especially for the Cross-wagon, but also an additional palette of decorative trims in the interior. The seat and door inserts can be either orange or grey.
