  • The power steering pump is a vane type, double-acting, combined with a reservoir for working fluid, with a filter built into the reservoir. The pump drive is gear driven, from the gears driving the engine units;
  • The radiator for cooling the working fluid is a finned U-shaped tube;
  • The steering mechanism, combined in one housing with the power steering power cylinder, uses two working pairs at once - a screw with a nut on circulating balls and a rack with a toothed sector, and the rack in the first pair plays the role of a nut, and immediately acts as a power steering piston;
  • Steering gear, consisting of a bipod of the steering mechanism, longitudinal rod, transverse rod and steering tips. The steering column, together with the steering wheel, is installed directly in the cabin; the steering mechanism is mounted on the left side member of the frame slightly in front of the front axle beam. The power steering pump is installed directly on the engine, since it is driven from the propeller shaft through the drive gears of the units. The power steering radiator is mounted directly on the engine cooling radiator, which ensures effective heat removal from the working fluid in all operating modes.

Currently, KAMAZ vehicles use various types of steering mechanisms (models 4310 and 5320, as well as foreign-made PPT, RBL and ZF), pumps and other components. In addition, in NefAZ buses built on a KAMAZ chassis, the angular gearbox is separated from the steering mechanism, and an additional driveshaft is located between them. But in general, all civilian vehicles and KAMAZ chassis have fundamentally the same steering, the diagram of which is described above.

The steering of cars with two steered axles (models 6520, 6350, 6540 and others) is somewhat more complicated. In particular, to transmit the turning force to the second steered axle, an intermediate rod and a lever mounted on the left side member of the frame are provided.

In this case, the steering bipod has two heads for connection with rods located on opposite sides of the bipod shaft. Direct rotation of the wheels of the second axle is performed by a separate power steering hydraulic cylinder located on the same left side member.

Removing the steering mechanism of UAZ-3741, UAZ-3962

Removing the steering mechanism of UAZ-3741, UAZ-3962 is carried out in the following order:

— Remove the turn signal switch.

— Disconnect the signal wire.

— Remove the signal button and contact parts.

— Unscrew the steering wheel fastening nut 2-3 turns and, using a puller, loosen the steering wheel fastening on the steering shaft cone.

— Unscrew the steering wheel nut and remove the steering wheel.

The working pair of the steering gear is a globoidal worm and a double-ridge roller. A worm pressed onto a hollow shaft is installed in the steering gear housing on two tapered roller bearings.

To ensure the reliability of the connection between the shaft and the worm, a keyway is made and splines are cut on the worm shaft. A double-ridge roller is in constant engagement with the worm.

Its annular grooves located inside provide a working surface for a double-row ball bearing. It is mounted on an axis, which is mounted in the head of the bipod shaft.

This shaft rotates in two bearings at once: a bronze bushing pressed into the crankcase and a cylindrical roller bearing. This element is installed in the crankcase cover on the side of the steering gearbox.

The shaft head shank fits into the groove of the adjustment screw. It is screwed into the crankcase cover on the side. The adjustment screw is secured with a pin and a lock washer, which are pressed into the cover. The mechanism is closed with a nut and cap.

With its upper end, the steering shaft enters the bearing, rotating on it. The bearing is pressed into the column housing. The bearing spacer is prevented from moving by a special spring.

Good day, dear friends. As many owners of classic VAZs know, we have an “amazing” steering gear mechanism. But many people forget, and undeservedly, that it at least needs to change the oil once every one and a half to two years. While I’m slowly servicing the car since the purchase, I decided to change the (as it turned out still factory) TAD-17 with a Kixx Geartec 75w85, so that it spins better in winter (regular transmission oil is poured into the steering gear), and at the same time adjust the steering play.

First, remove the black protective cap, then use a size 8 wrench to unscrew the filler hole.

Since the gearbox does not have a drain hole, we take a tube from the dropper and a syringe, and pump out the oil from there, poking the tube inside everywhere to pump out as much as possible.

The blackening oil was sucked out, I filled it with new, amber oil))) According to the manual, the fill is ≈0.2 liters, personally, I filled it to the fullest. In fact, I didn’t calculate the volume, but it won’t be any worse. I unscrewed the adjusting nut and used a screwdriver to adjust the required tension of the steering wheel, turning the screw left/right, achieving optimal lightness and tension.

To work, you will need a large flat-head screwdriver and a 19 mm wrench. It is also advisable to involve an assistant; together, the work will be completed much faster.

To adjust, use a 19-mm wrench to loosen the locking nut and use a flat-head screwdriver to gradually tighten the adjusting screw. In this case, the assistant checks the play while inside the car. After completing the adjustment, hold the screw with a screwdriver and fix its position using a locknut.

If adjustment to eliminate backlash does not help, then the worm pair has too much wear and repair is necessary. In this case, only replacing it can solve the problem. This work can also be done with your own hands, without the help of specialists.

Here you will need to completely remove the gearbox from the VAZ 2107:

  • Disconnect the rod ends of the steering system - unscrew them and tighten the nuts with a 22mm wrench.
  • Release the clamp that secures the column and gearbox.
  • Unscrew the three bolts that secure the gearbox to the body.
