The car looks simply amazing. And I must say, the future SUV has significantly diluted the existing palette of models with its eccentricity, interesting design, and complex elements. This will be the replacement for Kalina. The X-Code SUV will fully enter the Russian market by 2022. The start of sales of the SUV is scheduled for the end of 2022, but all the necessary information about the car is already freely available.

Let's start with the appearance, which can safely be called bright, presentable and original, just like the X Ray model. In the photo of the new version of Lada XCODE you can see the massive front part. The sporty style of the car is given by the A-pillars heavily tilted back, a fairly simple hood, and the arrogant look of narrow headlights. Somewhat reminiscent of Lada Vesta.

Particular attention is drawn to the front bumper, made in an X-shaped style. The same could be seen at Vesta Sport. The new product received a large number of chrome elements that can be seen literally everywhere. The radiator grille, covered with a black mesh with huge cells, looks no less extravagant.

The profile of the new body literally bursts with grandeur and presentability. Its most striking element are two symmetrical deep stampings located on the wings and doors. The window sill line runs almost parallel to the ground. The roof line of the body looks just as “calm”. The side mirrors have undergone serious tuning, acquiring a new, sporty shape and becoming slightly narrower. Taken from Xray Cross.

Photos of the stern are also impressive. It also looks luxurious and modern. Lada XCODE demonstrates the same muscular relief, chiseled edges of complex elements. The rear optics, represented by huge blocks of lights, as well as the tailgate are made in the same X-shape. The stern is given additional beauty by a wide chrome molding emblazoned above the license plate and a massive tow bar.

The dimensions, according to reviews from owners, are quite worthy of respect. The length of the newcomer is slightly more than 4 meters. The width of the car will be approximately 1750 mm. The height was approximately 1,550 mm. But the ground clearance will be higher than that of Kalina. The ground clearance for a beginner will be 175 mm, and maybe even higher. I was also pleased with the large selection of body colors, of which there are as many as 10. The X-shaped look was transferred not only to this Concept, but also to the Lada Raven. If they launch it, it will be a bomb. The entire Russian market will follow AvtoVAZ.

From the photographs presented, you can see that the X-shaped aluminum elements on the front bumper have acquired a more defined shape and now flow into the headlights. Sloping headlights, being a continuation of the radiator grille, make the car visually wider. The side/daytime running light functions have been visually separated from the main headlight units, creating the appearance of individual “eyelashes” that are integrated into the concept's sculpted hood. The rear lights have a visual connection with the X-shaped rear fenders and are an extension of the C-pillar, which is made in the shape of a “shark fin”. The sides of the body are also made in the familiar X-shaped style.

The outer handles of the rear doors were hidden by moving them in a vertical position to the black area of ​​the door frame. The sloping roof surface allows airflow to flow between the roof and the rear spoiler, improving aerodynamic efficiency. At the rear, too, you can see a clear X-shaped graphic created by the tailgate glass with a pronounced trapezoidal shape, framed by two taillights.

The impressive instrument panel with a complex design immediately attracts attention. The center console is designed in a rather minimalist style. Nothing special, reminiscent of the Lada Kalina interior. Here the main element is a 10-inch touchscreen tablet, placed separately forward and mounted on an elegant stand. It has a large number of options, but the climate control system is located in a separate unit. Inside the Lada X Code is cozy and comfortable. The decoration is very reminiscent of the VAZ 2116 and Lada Vesta, X Rey. The front seats are well profiled. Unlike Kalina, they have good lateral support, and the seats are not so hard. Sound insulation in the cabin, although it has become a little better, is still far from ideal. Extraneous noise and engine sounds are still clearly audible. It is expected that Lada Connect multimedia will be finalized and installed.

The interior decoration commands respect. The quality of materials, accessories and decorative elements has increased noticeably. Now it is at the level of Renault or even Nissan. There is not a lot of free space, but there is also a lot. True, the back seat will still be cramped for three passengers.

The luggage compartment holds almost 350 liters. Folding the backrests of the second row will increase it to 550 liters.

Specifications

Little is known about the technical characteristics of the Lada X CODE 2022. However, we can safely assume that they will differ little from the Kalinovsky ones. This information was provided by the manufacturer himself. A 1.4-liter engine with 16 valves and a direct fuel injection system will be offered as the main power unit. What is special about it is the turbine, due to which it was possible to increase the power to 150 hp.

The concept is being developed taking into account the use of the promising LADA Connect system. It will allow you to combine all the car’s systems into a single, coherent system that will be controlled via your phone.

Competitors

The new Lada X KOD has plenty of potential competitors and they are all quite serious rivals. For example, Chevrolet Niva and Nissan Terrano. The main advantages of Chevrolet include:

  • memorable, beautiful interior, with good layout and decoration;
  • the driver's seat has decent ergonomics and a convenient location of control devices;
  • high ground clearance, which is 180 mm. The test drive video shows that the Niva’s cross-country ability and off-road qualities are in perfect order. She is resilient, reliable and does not fail in difficult situations;
  • Unlike the new Lada X KOD model shown in the photo, the Niva is equipped with engines that run not only on gasoline, but also on diesel;
  • affordable car price for many buyers. Inexpensive maintenance and spare parts are also affordable.

The disadvantages of the Chevrolet Niva are:

  • sluggish acceleration dynamics. The car accelerates to the first hundred in 15 seconds;
  • high fuel consumption, which in mixed mode is almost 14.0 liters;
  • only one transmission;
  • mediocre visibility, which is hampered by too wide front and rear pillars;
  • weak paint coating. Within a year, rust begins to appear, especially on the sills and rear arches.

A review of the second competitor, the Nissan Terrano, allows you to see a rather charismatic car, which is not without its own special personality. In the photo, its appearance looks as modern as that of the XCODE Lada. The main advantages of this crossover are:

  • spacious, comfortable interior;
  • good maneuverability, endurance;
  • excellent dynamic qualities;
  • simple, easy controls;
  • fairly rare breakdowns;
  • unpretentiousness in maintenance;
  • like Lada X CODE affordable price.

XCODE and all new Ladas at the Moscow Motor Show

There will be more X's. The Moscow Motor Show, which this year almost turned into a “corporate event for Lada,” gave answers to questions about what course and with what cars AvtoVAZ will “get healthy” under the leadership of the new president. And even though VAZ didn’t bring a single production premiere to the exhibition, the six concept cars at the Lada stand formed a very bright puzzle.

True, Vesta Cross and XRAY Cross can hardly be called concept cars: these are practically production cars, which differ from their originals only in increased ground clearance (Vesta has 203 mm) and a plastic “off-road” body kit around the perimeter of the body. But if the “cross” XRAY, like the regular one, will be produced only in a five-door body, then the Vesta Cross, along with a station wagon body (AvtoVAZ showed such a conceptual version exactly a year ago, will also be offered in a sedan version.

True, first (in the second half of next year) the ordinary cargo-passenger Vesta will be put on the conveyor, and only then the Crosses. And the elevated XRAY is only coming in 2018. Moreover, at first they will all be exclusively front-wheel drive. VAZ continues to search for an all-wheel drive transmission for Vesta and Xray; the choice has come down to the systems of the Renault-Nissan alliance: either a traditional rear coupling or a unique hydrostatic transmission, which Autoreview talked about in the spring. The hydraulic motor in the rear axle drive showed excellent performance on experimental Sandero hatchbacks, but the system works most harmoniously with Renault engines, and adaptation will be required for VAZ units.

But both Vesta and XRAY will receive sports versions. The “charged” Vesta is already ready - sales will begin next year. Thanks to the efforts of the Lada Sport division, Vesta’s suspension was retuned, rear disc brakes appeared, and most importantly, a modified 1.8 naturally aspirated engine with a power of about 150 hp, which works with the French “mechanics” JR5. The “hot” XRAY will receive a similar filling, the same engine and modifications to the suspension. But the price even for a sports Vesta will apparently be about a million rubles.

This is the name of the conceptual crossover, which became the main exhibit of AvtoVAZ at the current auto show. The design and physique are seductive to the point of foul, because, firstly, XCODE looks very compact, and in this size Lada simply cannot be so beautiful, otherwise goodbye, thrifty. And secondly, the number of “X’s” in the signature VAZ style is rapidly multiplying, and now crosshairs are applied not only to the radiator grille and sidewalls, but also inscribed in the headlights.

True, XCODE looks more harmonious than all the “X-shaped” Ladas - this is the first project of Rafael Linari, who now heads the Moscow design studio of AvtoVAZ, and previously worked on the Renault Twingo hatchback. He brought relief, athleticism and even slight eroticism to Steve Mattin's style: this Lada is more of a girl, despite the large wheels and high seating position.

The concept car was developed and built in Togliatti in just a few months, the first sketches appeared in January. VAZ workers say that the initiative came from Mattin’s team, but in the strategic plans of then-president Bo Andersson there were sketches for a subcompact urban crossover.

XCODE is smaller than XRAY, almost identical in length to Kalina: four meters from nose to tail. Officially, VAZ says that they are looking for an approach to a new generation of urban youth who are passionate about electronics and gadgets, so it is understood that such a crossover will receive a new Lada Connect multimedia system with Internet access, and will also be equipped with a parking assistant, active cruise control and even remote control!

You may recall that the emphasis was placed on rich equipment during the launch of Kalina-2, but practice has shown that in the segment of traditional urban hatchbacks it did not live up to expectations: the demand for the regular Kalina hatch practically disappeared (for example, in the first five months of this Only 2,044 cars were sold in the year), and buyers switched either to station wagons (almost 4,000 buyers chose the cargo-and-passenger Kalina) or to pseudo-crossovers (Kalina Cross collected 3,723 orders). That's why XCODE is so high. And to be honest, it would only be better if this car completely replaced the base hatch.

True, the real SUV is still in the very early stages of development. According to our information, at the start a shortened Vesta platform was tried on for this project, but in the end the basis may even be a mix of components from different platforms. Although this option is still unlikely, because Nicolas More stated that he would propose to AvtoVAZ shareholders a policy of unification and reduction of platforms. The engines are obviously their own, VAZ ones, the drive is only on the front wheels. If AvtoVAZ does not experience another default, then there is hope that XCODE may be released before 2022.

Lada XCODE release date

The start of sales, according to the previously declassified development plan of AvtoVAZ, is unlikely to take place before 2022. Until this moment, the issue with the platform must be clarified and a production version must be presented.

In 2016, it was reported that they were going to release a compact crossover in the next five years, which in the manufacturer’s model range should be located between the Kalina Cross and XRAy (in size and price it will be more expensive than the X-ray). It is reported that with the release of Lada XCODE AvtoVAZ will mark the transition to the next generation of cars under the Lada brand.

It has not yet been announced which platform will be used in the XCODE design, but plans are mentioned to use a special platform and a couple of chassis options for the all-wheel drive modification. In addition, the company will gradually move to the modular chassis CMF-B, a new development of the Renault-Nissan alliance, designed to replace the B0 architecture.

Over the next seven years, AvtoVAZ expects to introduce eight new products and, it seems, the manufacturer will succeed. For example, sales of West station wagons began in the fall of 2022, and this year the premiere of the serial XRAY in an off-road version will take place.

Serial crossover Lada XCODE – all the details

Recently, AVTOVAZ has accustomed us to the fact that it presents concept cars for a reason. Yes, the first concept car of the new era, shown in 2012 Lada Xray, did not become a production car - the real X-Ray, as we know, looks different - but it clearly set a new corporate style that Lada will follow in the near future . XCODE is the second stage in the evolution of this style. But more importantly, it looks much closer to a production car than the first concept.

Take a closer look, in XCODE there really is not a single deliberately “conceptual” element, which were present in Xray-2012 (just remember its interior), and almost everything, with minor exceptions, looks as if it does not require adaptation to mass production at all. Moreover, the “Concepts” section has appeared on the official AVTOVAZ website, where all six concept cars shown at MIAS 2016 are present, and X-Code is given first place in the list.

According to the tradition that occurs with other manufacturers, cars from the “Concepts” section very often migrate over time to the main model range. In addition to the X-Code, in this section Lada has cars that are sure to become serial - sports and “cross” modifications of Vesta and Xray.

Actually, most of the doubts were dispelled by Nicolas More, who at the end of August 2016 told the press that the Lada XCODE would appear in the series in five years or even a little earlier, and in the lineup it would take a place between the Kalina Cross SUV and the just introduced Xray Cross. The latter, by the way, before the appearance of the X-Code, is entrusted with the task of competing with cars in the fast-growing segment - Hyundai Creta and Renault Kaptur. A little later, in September, this idea was developed by Harold Grübel, voicing a forecast: in the next few years, up to 50% of the market could be occupied by crossovers and SUVs, SUVs and SUVs. So Lada XCODE definitely has a future.

Among the technical solutions announced are all-wheel drive and a turbo engine, . There is still no clarity about the 4x4 system for new Lada cars - either it will be a transmission borrowed from Renault-Nissan, or developed in-house by AVTOVAZ. But both the Xray Cross and the serial version of XCODE will definitely have all-wheel drive.

An interesting situation with the turbo engine: as you know, AVTOVAZ has developments on a 1.4-liter gasoline turbo engine, and moreover, it is also part of an experimental hybrid power plant that was tested on the Lada Granta. It is likely that one of the versions of the serial Lada XCODE will turn out to be a rechargeable hybrid capable of driving on pure electric power.

The most important question at the moment is the platform of the future crossover. AVTOVAZ claims that the project is at the stage of studying consumer interest, the platform has not yet been determined, and because of this, even the exact dimensions of the future car are unknown. But this is hardly entirely true, given the announced timing of the model’s appearance on the assembly line. At a minimum, there are definitely a number of options. Let's try to understand which ones exactly.

The first option is a borrowed version of the new CMF platform from the Renault-Nissan alliance. The concept of this platform (or rather, architecture) divides the entire car into five zones - the power plant, the front of the chassis, the rear, the cockpit (interior) and electrical/electronics. For each such zone there is a certain set of suitable solutions. According to the status of these solutions, the platform is divided into three subtypes - CMF-A, CMF-B and CMF-CD. For the first time, Nicolas More indirectly hinted at the use of CMF when he spoke about a compact car for Russia, like the Indian Kwid - let us remind you that the Kwid is based on CMF-A. More precisely, the president of AVTOVAZ pointed to the new architecture of the Alliance already in the context of a conversation about Lada XCODE, saying that instead of the previous borrowed B0 platform, the Lada brand will gradually switch to CMF-B.

By the way, the second generation Nissan Juke and Renault Duster crossovers, which will hit the market in 2017, are based on this platform. The CMF platform option on the new Lada crossover is possible because it meets the principle of “lean engineering” proclaimed by Carlos Ghosn with the launch of the Renault Kwid and the CMF platform.

The second option is to use AVTOVAZ’s own resources. In September, Gruebel came out with an interesting phrase: “Over the next five years, we will combine the Granta/Kalina and Vesta platforms.” What is behind this is still unclear (according to one version, XCODE will receive the Kalina body frame, but with the front part of the Vesta platform “implanted” into it), but this is fully consistent with the policy of reducing the number of platforms - Lada now has four of them, not counting the borrowed one B0, it is planned to leave two or three. This is, in essence, the same “lean engineering” - not developing a new platform, wasting engineering resources on it, but using combinations and upgrades of what already exists. Which, oddly enough, is very reminiscent of the modular approach used in the CMF architecture.

Is it possible that in reality we will see some kind of combination of these approaches - for example, could individual parts of the Lada B (Vesta) platform be included in the CMF “constructor” set? This would correspond to the principles outlined above, and would also be fully consistent with the course towards the maximum possible localization taken by Nicolas Mohr and already being implemented by Harald Grübel. However, for now such assumptions look too fantastic.

By the way, the name XCODE itself is still quite fantastic and speculative: it is not at all a fact that the car will be called that way in the series. Let us remind you that back in June 2016, AVTOVAZ registered the name “Xray X”, and what is hidden behind it is currently unclear - maybe an all-wheel drive version of the Xray Cross, or perhaps just the production version of XCODE.

But it is known for sure that the new crossover will feature the Lada Connect system, which combines the car’s multimedia system and a smartphone, linking together information, navigation and entertainment services, as well as driver assistance systems: automatic emergency braking, automatic parking, active cruise control and even remote control of the car.

Finally, it should be noted that Harold Gruebel identifies three technologies that the Lada brand will develop in the coming years: new engines, all-wheel drive systems and... automatic transmissions. According to him, the AMT transmission developed and already used on Lada cars will undergo improvements, and in addition, a certain version of the classic “automatic” may appear, localized in the Volga region.

The prerequisites for this already exist: as you know, the Tolyatti FEZ is already producing the Jatco automatic transmission switching mechanism, which is installed on Granta, Kalina and a couple of Datsun models, also assembled on the VAZ assembly line, and in the future the localization of “automatic machines” will become more , and, as it became known to the Kolesa.ru website that we are not only talking about casting plastic components.

So, belonging to the most popular segment in the future, a new (whatever) platform, a successfully developed “X-style”, a hybrid power plant with a gasoline turbo engine and the ability to drive on pure electric power, all-wheel drive, automatic transmission, aggregation of vehicle systems with a smartphone and the latest active driver assistance systems... Sounds good, so we are waiting for you, serial XCODE!

All that is known so far is that the crossover will be built either on the B0 platform, on which both the Lada X-Ray and the Renault Duster are based. It can be assumed that the technical characteristics of the Lada X Code will be similar to these cars, but will be larger in size than the X-Ray and will already fall into the segment of mid-size SUVs. There is a possibility that the X-Code will receive all-wheel drive, but the auto giant has not yet decided on this

Indeed, a question. At the presentation itself, AvtoVAZ chief designer Steve Mattin noted that the presented crossover prototype was nothing more than a show car. In its creation, Mr. Mattin tried to show everything that will be presented by the domestic automobile industry in the near (and not so near) future.

That is, before us is, first of all, design, and only then - the car. However, it was later said that it usually takes about 4 years to develop a new car. That is, XCode is still not a completely empty “blank”?

Yes and no. Yes - because in the very near future (until 2018), AvtoVAZ already has many projects that need to be taken on and completed. Projects that are interesting, self-sufficient and cause sincere pleasure from contemplating them. The concept of a sports Vesta presented at MIAS 2016 - with a 150-horsepower engine and an interesting exterior - made me think: why not? Yes, this will be a top-end modification that will cost about one million rubles... But adjusted for the timing of its appearance, it becomes clear: the new platform will correct many “childhood diseases” in a couple of years, and some of Vesta’s own mistakes will be addressed. Moreover, the sports modification for the auto show was carried out by specialists from the AvtoVAZ sports division, who usually work closely with the WTCC touring car championship races. The comrades know a lot about engines - and know how to apply their hands to the right place.

Returning to “XCode”... No, we won’t see him. Why? Simply because the presented prototype is really a blank. And with a fairly familiar design. The only clearly new thing in the LADA XCODE is the original head optics, duplicating the style of the XCODE.

Theoretically, you can take a standard XRAY, pour it with bright yellow paint, install home-made head optics - and with the exception of some other details, we will have the same concept.

Simply put, it is possible to mass-produce LADA XCODE, but it is not necessary yet. AvtoVAZ itself does not need it, and not consumers and admirers of the new corporate style.

How does it drive?

At the auto show, a lot was said about design, style, “gadgets for young people” (to which the XCODE concept was presented), the new LADA Connect telemetry system... and nothing about the technical part of the new crossover. Even focusing on the dimensions of the prototype is pointless - they say, “we are studying the public’s opinion.”


In translation, we have the following: there is no ready-made solution for the XCODE “cart” yet. It is not known whether it will be our own development (as happened with Vesta) or the B0 platform from the Renault concern once again used. Preliminary rumors about the crossover stubbornly insisted: it will be an all-wheel drive crossover “at a level higher than XRAY.” Rumors after the presentation already say “the serial LADA XCODE will take a place between Calina Cross and XRAY.”

But why do Russians need another compact pseudo-crossover? The Chinese auto industry has already flooded the Russian market “I can’t” - with the same type of engines, standard-rich equipment and modest performance characteristics. Moreover, if we consider the future XRAY as a crossover: with all-wheel drive, an interesting engine and its own “right”? Yes, XRay will have all-wheel drive in 2018. It will be equipped with the most powerful 1.8-liter engine. And it is built on the budget B0 trolley, successfully and long used in Renault Duster.

What is the bottom line of this point? Saving should be economical - that’s it. It’s somehow no longer customary to pay a lot for the domestic auto industry in Russia - that’s two. Development costs quite a lot of money - that's three. LADA XCODE will probably be built on the ready-made modular platform of the Renault-Nissan concern. Whether it will be the aforementioned B0 or ​​the slightly more interesting CMF (used, for example, in the slightly larger Nissan Qashqai) will depend solely on the final path of development of the concept: larger or smaller in size. We sincerely hope that it is “a car of a higher class” that is worth waiting for.

Is XCODE worth the wait?

But here it’s up to you to decide. We plan to wait. Moreover, the latest rumors claim that the new product will be presented before 2022. Or maybe not ((
