Quick replacement of the timing belt on a VAZ 2114 with an 8-valve engine

Today I came to visit my old friend, barbecue and all that, and in between, a small maintenance on his freshly painted VAZ 2114, replacement of the timing belt, rollers and pump. This car has a standard eight-valve engine and this greatly simplifies the matter, since on this engine the procedure for replacing the timing belt takes 30 minutes. In our case, the timing belt was eating up a little on the inside and one of the oil pump bolts was to blame for this, we’ll talk about this at the end of the article.

On the VAZ 2114 engine there are 8 valves, if the timing belt breaks, the valve does not bend.

Under standard conditions, the timing belt replacement interval is 60 thousand kilometers or four years of operation, whichever comes first. The replacement interval can be increased to 80 thousand with periodic monitoring of the condition of the belt, roller and pump.

How to set the timing on the markers on the VAZ 2113-VAZ 2115?

1) As we said earlier, if you just need to set the marks, provided that the phases you usually use before removing the timing belt, for example, this is all done easily and quickly, but if you don't have these marks, then after this is already forced to remove the timing belt and all these labels are set, first we will explain how to apply all the marks and so you will make sure that you have set the valve timing normally or there are deviations, come to first you need to remove the cover that covers the RM mechanism and already turned on. After that, everything is placed on the marks, the cover is removed as follows, all the bolts that secure it are turned off (in all three places they are fixed exactly in what you see in the photo below), and once everything is unscrewed, remove the cover of the closing mechanism from the car engine.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the timing belt

  1. Unscrew the two bolts from the side of the timing belt protective cover. Key for 10.

  1. And one in front, remove the cover. Key for 10.

  1. Remove the generator drive belt. Loosen the locking nut, set the wrench to 13 and unscrew the tension bolt, set the wrench to 10. Move the generator towards the cylinder block.

Why change the belt?

VAZ 2114 allows the timing belt to be replaced every 60-75 km, according to the manufacturer’s routine maintenance sheet. However, given the quality of our spare parts, experienced car owners recommend replacing them no later than 30-40 thousand. km.

At least once a month, the belt should be visually inspected for visible mechanical damage. If a fault is found, it must be replaced immediately.

If this is not done, the pulley and water pump may fail. In addition, there are cases when parts of the belt wrap around the alternator pulley, which leads to clogging of its shaft.

But there is also good news. On VAZ 2114 cars with 8-cylinder engines of 1.5 and 1.6 liters, a broken belt does not risk bending the valves and damaging the cylinder head, which cannot be said about sixteen-valve engines, where this problem occurs 90%. cases.

Installing a new timing belt

  1. We get a new timing kit, in our case from Gates.

Gates timing kit.

  1. For a VAZ 2114 engine with 8 valves, it contains a toothed belt and a tension roller.

  1. If anyone needs it, the article number on the box is as follows.

  1. We check that all marks match. We install the tension roller in place, but do not tighten the nut. Next, install a new timing belt, put it first on the crankshaft sprocket, then on the camshaft sprocket, tension roller and pump. We make sure that the descending branch of the belt is tensioned.
  2. Using a special wrench, turn the tension roller and tighten the timing belt. Tighten the nut.
  3. The correct tension is considered to be one in which, with two fingers, we can turn the timing belt in the longest section by a maximum of 90 degrees.

A new timing belt has been installed.

  1. We install all parts in the reverse order of removal. Fill with antifreeze.

This procedure is so simple that you can do it yourself even without a garage, just in the courtyard of your house.

Location of the timing belt on the VAZ 2114

Location of the timing belt under the hood of a VAZ 2114
Finding this important part is not difficult at all, because when you open the hood of the car, it immediately catches your eye. This belt differs from others in its toothed inner surface, and also passes not only through the camshaft and crankshaft, but also connects several auxiliary parts, due to which it is subject to increased wear, so its replacement must be carried out in a timely manner.

Sooner or later, the timing belt may begin to “eat up”, slip or begin to tear. It often happens that this link connecting two shafts breaks directly during movement. In such cases, the car stalls and does not start, and in the injection versions 2114, the “phase sensor error” light comes on on the dashboard.

Causes of toothed belt wear on VAZ 8 valve engines

  1. Wear of the timing belt on the front side is the main cause of a worn pump, but sometimes it can also be the tension roller stud and, in very rare cases, the camshaft sprocket. To eliminate this problem, replace the worn part.
  2. Wear on the rear side is much less common. The main reason is the bolt on the oil pump. Over time, the belt tension weakens a little and, vibrating, it begins to reach this bolt. It’s very easy to fix this problem; we replace the Torx sprocket bolt with a regular 10mm socket, its head is smaller and the timing belt is no longer missing. The photo shows wear from the belt.

The price of a timing belt and the cost of replacing it

A timing belt can be easily purchased at any automotive store. Its cost, depending on the manufacturer, ranges from 400 to 1000 rubles. However, when replacing the belt, it is recommended to change the tension roller, the price of which varies from 400 to 600 rubles.

The approximate cost of replacing a belt complete with a roller in a car service ranges from 600 to 1000 rubles.

If you do not have the opportunity or desire to go to a service station, you can do the repairs yourself. But first you need to buy a new timing belt and pulley.

Considering possible malfunctions caused by a broken timing belt, as well as the complexity of repairs, purchasing parts of dubious quality and unknown manufacturers is highly undesirable.

What is timing belt?

The timing belt, also known as the gas distribution mechanism, is a part responsible for synchronizing the injection and gas distribution phases in the power unit of the machine. In order for the entire system to work as a single whole, it is necessary to align special marks, which are the point of manual synchronization of the gas distribution.

Most often they go astray when the timing belt is replaced or it breaks while the engine is running. If you do not double-check that the marks match, the engine will not operate correctly, which means you will have to remove the belt again and set everything up.

Timing diagram

TAKE INTO ACCOUNT! The timing belt has two pairs of marks, one of which is located on the pulleys, and the second near the block. They must coincide at the highest position of the first or fourth cylinder.

Belt selection

To change the strap yourself, you will need the following parts:

  1. The belt itself. Article number of the original product 2108-1006040-10.
  2. Tension roller. The original part has catalog number 2108-1006120. Please note that only this type of roller can be used; the use of parts with article number 2112-1006120 is not allowed, since these elements are not interchangeable.
  3. For a complete replacement, you will need a pin for the tension roller. Its article number is 2108-1006129.
  4. Sealing element under the casing, if necessary. Catalog number of the original part is 2108-1006149.
  5. If the plastic timing belt cover is cracked or damaged, it must also be replaced. The catalog number of the original casing developed for the VAZ 2114 is 2108-1006146.

As for the videos, they can also be unoriginal:

  • Gates, model T42042 or T42042A;
  • Flennor, model FS99018;
  • Optimal 0N1917.

Causes of timing belt failure

There are several reasons for this breakdown on the VAZ-2115:

  • natural wear and tear;
  • pollution;
  • ingress of oil and foreign objects;
  • pump failure;
  • changing the position of the tension roller;
  • camshaft or crankshaft jamming.

The role of the timing belt installed on the injector of a VAZ-2115 car is to ensure that the engine valves open at the right time. It synchronizes the camshaft pulley with the crankshaft. Therefore, it is important to change it in time when it wears out so that problems with the engine do not arise.

How to determine when it's time to change the timing belt

The most prudent thing to do would be to install a new spare part on your VAZ-2115 before the belt breaks. The following signs may indicate that urgent replacement is necessary:

  • hum and extraneous noise during operation of the power unit;
  • mileage on one belt is over 60 thousand kilometers;
  • oil getting into the timing belt.

In a situation with a belt, it is best to spend money on a new spare part and replace it several times than to pay later for a major engine overhaul. Manufacturers often assure that you can drive up to 100 thousand kilometers on one belt on a VAZ-2115; in fact, it is better to change it every 60 or a little earlier.

Check the belt tension regularly; if it sag or distributes the load unevenly, this component may soon need to be replaced. Remember that in this part of the timing belt there is no such thing as self-adjustment during operation. Uneven tension will inevitably lead to breakage. This part of the gas distribution mechanism must be replaced immediately after the first time it is tightened.

Be sure to monitor the battery and ignition system of your VAZ-2115, since starting the engine “from the pusher” has a detrimental effect on the condition of the timing belt. The fact is that with this type of launch, the shafts begin to move with a strong jerk, which stretches the belt and leads to a decrease in its service life.
