We change the oil in the automatic transmission, transfer case and gearbox of the VW Touareg ourselves

In order to avoid the need to make premature, expensive transmission repairs, the automatic transmission especially needs timely and high-quality maintenance. At the same time, SUVs and crossovers, even taking into account their apparent strength and reliability, are no exception.

As for the popular Volkswagen Touareg model, it is necessary to carry out a complete or partial oil change in the Touareg automatic transmission on time. At the same time, it is not always necessary to contact a car service, since this procedure can be performed independently. Let's look at this issue in more detail.

Changing the oil in the VW Touareg transfer case

VAG G052515A2 oil is intended for filling into the transfer case of a Volkswagen Touareg; as an alternative, you can use Castrol Transmax Z. To replace, you will need 0.85 liters of lubricant. The cost of original oil can range from 1100 to 1700 rubles. 1 liter of Castrol Transmax Z costs about 750 rubles.

The drain and filler plugs of the transfer case are removed using a 6mm hexagon. There is no sealant for the plugs - sealant is used. The old sealant is removed from the threads and a layer of new is applied. When the plugs are prepared, the drain is installed in place, and the required volume of oil is poured through the upper hole. When tightening the plugs, do not use excessive force.

Features of changing oil in automatic transmission VW Touareg

There are many opinions regarding the need to change the oil in the Volkswagen Touareg gearbox. Should I open the automatic transmission and change the oil? For a caring car owner, the answer to this question is obvious - definitely yes. Any, even the highest quality materials and mechanisms, even with the most careful use, do not last forever, and it never hurts to make sure that everything is in order with them after a certain number of thousands of kilometers.

It is recommended to change the oil in the VW Touareg automatic transmission after 150 thousand km.

When to change the oil in a VW Touareg gearbox

Among the features of the Volksagen Touareg is the absence of requirements in the technical documentation regarding the timing of oil changes in the gearbox. Official dealers, as a rule, state that an oil change in the Tuareg automatic transmission is not required at all, since it is not provided for by the manufacturer’s operating instructions. However, practice shows that such a procedure would be useful even for preventive purposes after a run of 150 thousand km or more. If any problems arise with the gearbox, experts recommend starting to search for the causes and eliminate the problems that arise by changing the oil. Problems in this case manifest themselves in the form of jerks when shifting gears. It should be said that changing the oil in this case can be considered a slight scare: replacing the valve body will be much more time-consuming and expensive. In addition, the need to change the oil in an automatic transmission may be caused, for example, by a breakdown of the oil cooler or another emergency situation when the oil leaks out.

What kind of oil to pour into the VW Touareg automatic transmission

The type of oil that is used in the automatic transmission of the Volkswagen Touareg is also not indicated in the technical documentation, so you should know that the brand of oil depends on the modification of the gearbox.

The original oil for a 6-speed automatic transmission is “ATF” G 055 025 A2 with a capacity of 1 liter; it can only be purchased from official dealers or upon order via the Internet. The cost of one canister ranges from 1200 to 1500 rubles. Analogues of this oil are:

  • Mobil JWS 3309;
  • Petro-Canada DuraDriye MV;
  • Febi ATF 27001;
  • SWAG ATF 81 92 9934.

Such oils can cost 600–700 rubles per canister, and, of course, cannot be considered an equivalent replacement for ATF, since it is the “native” oil that is designed for high power and torque of the Tuareg engine. Any analog will lose its qualities much faster and require a new replacement or lead to interruptions in the operation of the gearbox.

For the 8-speed automatic transmission made in Japan "Aisin", the manufacturer of these units produces Aisin ATF AFW+ oil and CVTF CFEx variator fluid. There is an analogue of Aisin ATF - German-made Ravenol T-WS oil. A fairly serious argument in favor of choosing one or another type of oil in this case is the cost: if Ravenol T-WS can be bought for 500–600 rubles per liter, then one liter of original oil can cost from 3 to 3.5 thousand rubles. A complete change may require 10–12 liters of oil.

Ravenol T-WS oil is an analogue of the original Aisin ATF AFW+ oil, intended for use in VW Touareg 8 automatic transmissions

Automaker and automatic transmission manufacturer - different views

Volkswagen claims that ATF is irreplaceable, and this is good advertising for the car. And in fact, the 0C8 automatic transmission is a very high-quality, technologically advanced product, the performance characteristics of which are likely to more than cover the warranty period.

The manufacturer, Aisin, claims that you need to keep an eye on the oil and change it regularly (every 20,000 miles) and the transmission will continue to work even after the warranty period expires.

What to choose?

To change the oil in the automatic transmission of a diesel Tuareg 3.0, an original fluid with index G 055 025 A2 is required. But the problem is that only officials have this oil and it costs about three thousand rubles per liter.

What then should I use to change the oil in the Tuarega 3.0 automatic transmission? You can use an analogue from Mobile or DuraDrive MV. These products meet all tolerances. They are suitable not only for changing the oil in the automatic transmission of a diesel Tuareg 2.5, but also for gasoline engines. The cost of one liter of product is about 700 rubles. How much oil is required for changing? It all depends on the method of operation. If this is a partial replacement, you need to prepare about four liters. A complete oil change in the Tuarega 3.6 automatic transmission requires at least nine liters. Next we will look at the features of each method.

Oil life

The Volkswagen Touareg is equipped with a 09D transmission. It was also installed on crossovers from Audi. In the operating manual, the manufacturer does not indicate after what period the oil in the box should be changed. They say it is filled for its entire service life. Perhaps this is true for Germany, because the Germans use the car for up to 100-150 thousand kilometers. But our realities are significantly different. So, you can often find a Volkswagen Touareg with a mileage of 400 thousand kilometers. Of course, in order for the car to survive until this period, you need to change consumables in it, including changing the oil in the automatic transmission. In our conditions, the Volkswagen Touareg requires this operation once every 60 thousand kilometers. This is exactly the regulation that most experts have determined.

You need to understand that oil is the working fluid in an automatic transmission. In addition to its main function (lubrication), it performs:

  • Heat removal.
  • Reducing the mechanical load on automatic transmission elements.
  • Removal of small particles that are formed as a result of wear of components.

Over time, this liquid becomes black (initially red). This indicates that an urgent oil change is required for the Tuareg automatic transmission. Whether it's a 2.5-liter engine or a 3-liter engine doesn't matter. Driving with such ATP fluid is fraught with unexpected breakdowns.

What kind of oil to fill in the automatic transmission of Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI

The three-liter Volkswagen Touareg engines were accompanied by both six-speed and eight-speed automatic transmissions. Everything directly depends on the year of manufacture of a particular model. So the six-speed can be seen on first-generation Tuaregs in the GP body with diesel engines:

  • 3.0 l, 224 hp
  • 3.0 l, 240 hp
  • 3.0 l, 225 hp

In addition, it is also present on models with engines:

  • 2.5 l, 163 hp
  • 2.5 l, 174 hp
  • 3.2 l, 220 hp
  • 3.2 l, 241 hp
  • 3.6 l, 280 hp
  • 4.2 l, 310 hp
  • 5.0 l, 313 hp
  • 6.0 l, 450 hp

Eight-speed hydromechanics have been installed on three-liter Tuaregs since 2010, in NF, FL and CR bodies:

  • 3.0 l, 204 hp
  • 3.0 l, 245 hp
  • 3.0 l, 249 hp
  • 3.0 l, 333 hp
  • 3.0 l, 340 hp

It was also installed with motors:

  • 2.0 l, 249 hp
  • 3.6 l, 249 hp
  • 3.6 l, 280 hp
  • 4.1 l, 340 hp
  • 4.2 l, 360 hp

As for the transmission fluid, the manufacturer uses its own original VAG ATF G055025A2 transmission oil in these machines. However, many motorists resort to using the less expensive analogue of the Toyota TIV.

Checking the level

The automatic transmission does not have a dipstick. Therefore, to check the oil level in the Tuareg automatic transmission, you will need to unscrew the control plug from the bottom of the pan. But first, you will need to warm up the automatic transmission.

  1. Warm up the Touareg automatic transmission.
  2. Drive the car for five kilometers so that the oil spreads over the most inaccessible parts of the machine. This is done if the car has been standing for a long time. If you use it often, then it will be enough to warm up the machine to 50 degrees.
  3. Place the Touareg on a flat surface.
  4. Do not turn off the engine. Get under the car.
  5. Unscrew the control plug on the pan

Oil should drip out of the hole. Don't forget to place a container for drainage so as not to contaminate the soil. If there is no oil, then you need to add it from a syringe into the box. The topping procedure is carried out until oil flows out of the control hole.

Pay attention to the color and impurities in the automatic transmission lubricant. If it has darkened and looks like a suspension, then the lubricant in the Volkswagen Touareg needs to be replaced.

Let's sum it up

As you can see, changing the oil in a Tuareg automatic transmission (at least partially) is not a very complicated operation; it also does not require special skills or special equipment. The only problem is that to achieve maximum oil renewal, the procedure must be repeated several times at short intervals, which means high overall transmission oil consumption.

Simply put, in some cases you can limit yourself to only a major overhaul of the automatic transmission (without replacing most of the parts), that is, to avoid costly overhaul of the gearbox or replacing the automatic transmission with a contract copy.

Practical advice on choosing oil in an automatic transmission Volkswagen Touareg

Many novice car enthusiasts ask what kind of oil is poured into a particular box. Is it possible to cast an analogue or something else, but at a lower price?

I will answer this way. The automatic transmission only needs original oil or an equivalent. Cheap Chinese fakes will not work. They will only ruin the machine gun.

The original oil protects the automatic transmission from oxidation of non-ferrous metals. It also prevents the machine from overheating in hot weather. The lubricant from the manufacturer does not interact with rubber gaskets and other parts in the Tuareg automatic transmission.

Original oil

The original lubricant is sold in liter and four liter canisters for Touareg automatic transmissions. It is produced by the same Japanese manufacturer. This oil is called Type T IV.

For a partial oil change you will need about 6 liters of fluid. If you want to do a full shift, the quantity will need to be doubled.

ATF Type IV protects automatic transmissions from foaming and overheating. The lubricant hardens at a temperature of minus 50. Therefore, this oil can be used in the northern latitudes of Russia. However, the only disadvantage of this transmission fluid is its high price.

Therefore, if you do not find T IV in the city where you live, or buying lubricant is too expensive for your wallet, then you can use an analogue.

Analogs

This ATP has an analogue. This is Mobile ATF 3309. It is no different from the original. The main thing is not to buy a fake. Therefore, buy ATF in a box at specialized markets or car dealerships.

Pay attention to the packaging and the presence of watermarks. The plastic from which the canister is made must be hard and not bend under finger pressure

The seams are neatly welded.

Do-it-yourself oil change in a Volkswagen Touareg automatic transmission

To change the oil in a Tuareg automatic transmission, you will need a pit or overpass. The procedure is done in several stages. Next, I will describe the steps that each stage will consist of.

Draining old oil

First you need to drain the waste. You do this procedure like this:

  1. Warm up the automatic transmission and install the Touareg on a pit or overpass.
  2. Turn off the engine and take a container to drain the waste.
  3. Go down into the pit.
  4. Unscrew the drain plug on the pan.
  5. Place a container for drainage.
  6. Wait until the waste from the Touareg automatic transmission stops pouring out.
  7. After this, unscrew all the bolts that hold the pallet. Use one hand to support the pan on the last bolts.

Because the remaining lubricant may leak out of it. It must be carefully poured into a container. Wear gloves. Since hot oil can burn the skin of your hands.

To continue changing the lubricant, you will need to clean the pan and magnets of chips. Because by installing dirty automatic transmission elements in place after replacement, you will only make things worse for the machine. Because the new filter and oil will quickly pick up the remaining dirt and you will have to change the transmission again.

Washing the tray and removing chips

Pull the pan out from under the Volkswagen Touareg and wash it with carbocleaner. Remove the magnets and clean them with a wire brush. Don't forget the old gasket. It needs to be removed with a sharp object. And the place where the rubber was located should be cleaned and degreased.

After these procedures are completed, proceed to replacing the filter device.

Replacing the filter

Replacing the Aisin automatic transmission oil filter is a prerequisite when changing the transmission fluid. The filter device is located next to the hydraulic unit. To remove it, you need to unscrew the bolts that hold the device.

Remove the filter and throw it away. I do not recommend washing felt membrane filters. Install the new one and tighten the bolts.

Run sealant over the pan gasket and install it in place. Tighten the bolts. Do not touch the plugs; let the holes remain open. Let's move on to filling the lubricant.

Filling with new oil

To add fresh transmission fluid to a Volkswagen Touareg automatic transmission, do the following:

  1. Take an automatic transmission oil syringe and fill it with the transmission.
  2. Insert into the filler hole and begin the filling process.
  3. Repeat the procedure until lubricant flows out of the inspection hole of the Touareg automatic transmission.
  4. Tighten the plugs and start the engine.

Warm up the automatic transmission and take the Touareg for a ride. Stop on a level surface and check the lubricant level.

Complete replacement

This method is slightly different. Here the oil is changed in full. But to do this, you need a special apparatus that, under pressure, will replace the old liquid with a new one. Without this equipment, a complete replacement cannot be performed. Therefore, this operation is performed only in the service. But experts note that this is a better and more correct method.

How is this operation performed? First, the car is driven into the box and placed on a lift. Next, specialists dismantle the automatic transmission pan, after draining the oil. Then the pan is cleaned of all dirt and wear products. Next, the element is installed in place. Then the device is connected to the pipelines that go to the oil cooling radiator. The device has already been filled with new fluid in full. It must be said that its quantity is slightly larger than the filling volume, about two liters.

At the next stage, the engine and the connected device start. Old fluid will flow out of one outlet, and new fluid will flow into the other. You can determine the condition of the oil by its color. When the liquid on both terminals is red, this indicates a successful oil change. In total, the procedure takes no more than an hour.

What to do if the damage is deep?

If the scratches are very deep, it will not be possible to deal with them using the listed methods and means. You will either have to replace the damaged part, or resort to drastic ways to solve the problem, including:

  1. Car painting. The composition is acquired to match the color of the plastic part. The paint is carefully applied to a cleaned and degreased surface with a thin brush. When the scratch is filled, it is covered with a layer of clear varnish, and then a glossy or matte polish is applied. Before painting, the surface of the scratch must be leveled. If it is not smooth, the paint will not adhere well.
  2. Use vinyl film, which is stretched over the damaged surface and heated with a hairdryer. This method allows you to disguise even deep defects. However, over time, the film will become unusable, so it will need to be replaced.
  3. Cover the part with leather. If you don’t have the skills to work with this material, you will have to turn to specialists. Such a service will not be cheap, but the leather panel looks stylish and modern.

Before deciding on one of the drastic methods of dealing with deep scratches, you need to calculate what is more profitable financially. Sometimes it is easier to replace a part with a new one than to try to restore it.
