Operating principle of the EUR

Every time you turn the steering wheel, the torsion shaft twists. Information about this process is transmitted from the torque sensor to the control unit online.

Based on the information received, the electronic control unit (hereinafter referred to as the ECU) accumulates information and reads readings from other sensors. The ECU transmits a signal to the electric motor, which increases the torque of the steering rack shaft by activating the electric motor.

Information is processed so quickly that tenths of seconds pass from the moment of transmission to the moment of reading.

Is it worth installing electric power steering?

Driving a car without electric power steering is, of course, possible. But if you have previously driven a car equipped with such a system, you may experience serious discomfort. You will be deprived of the usual electric motor support.

Installing such a mechanism has certain difficulties and is also associated with costs. But they will all pay off in a comfortable ride and increased safety for you and your passengers.

Possible malfunctions of the EUR

It happens that after installation the EUR does not work at all or intermittently.

This can be caused by various reasons, among which two most often stand out:

  1. Speed ​​sensor failure. The electric power steering operates in connection with the speed sensor. At high speeds, the extra force from the mechanism is reduced to give you more control. If data from the sensor stops flowing, the EUR will automatically turn off. The problem is solved by replacing the sensor.
  2. Incorrectly installed engine crankcase. If there is a violation in the installation of the engine crankcase (casing), vibrations from the engine will be transmitted to the amplifier. It will begin to buzz, and in some cases even turn off.

Steering rack adjustment

The unit knocks for various reasons. In fact, this is a real disease of the control mechanism, inherited from the Lada Kalina, since the components are identical on these cars. You can adjust the rack yourself.

To do this you will need a minimum of tools:

  • steering rack calibration key;
  • socket heads for 10 and 13;
  • shaped screwdriver.

To tighten the slats, you can use two methods. The first involves using a special key that can be inserted into the gap of the arch on the left side. The second method is more labor-intensive and is suitable if it is not possible to stick your hand into the gap. To do this, you will need to dismantle the battery and its platform; this is the only way to get to the nut for tightening the gearbox. The first method is simple, so it’s better to consider the second option.

To do this, you need to disconnect the battery terminals and remove it, and then remove the platform under it. Now you can get to the nut located on the inside of the gearbox housing. You can buy a combination wrench for tightening, on the one hand - for tightening the rack, on the other - for tensioning the timing belt.

To tighten the nut, turn it clockwise.

Steering Features Grants

The Granta steering wheel is a standard rack and pinion type; the drive consists of two steering rods combined into a single structure using ball joints. Theoretically it is not bad, but practice shows otherwise. The tie rod holes are incredibly huge, which is good for air exchange, but bad for pollution. Surprisingly, such practical AvtoVAZ masters somehow did not think about this pressing issue before. To correct this defect, many car owners install simple Lada steering rod plugs.

Most often, Granta steering wheels suffer from loose fasteners. What can be done in this case? You just have to tighten the nuts tighter. You can also note the occurrence of knocking in the steering wheel. To correct the problem, you should tighten the nuts if they are loose, or replace the parts if, upon inspection, you find that they are worn out. If the Lada Granta steering wheel rotates too tightly, you will have to change the bearing. In some cases, it is necessary to repair the suspension strut and lubricate the parts.

Required tools and materials

First of all, you will need the EUR itself. Please note its serial number. The last two digits indicate the type and place of production.

So, 00 is a geared amplifier, produced in Makhachkala and has received complaints from drivers. With the numbers 04 - Korean, installed on Grants and Kalinas, a good amplifier, can be found in stores, but there are few of them on sale. Well, 02 - Kaluga, gearless type, also has good reviews.

To connect, you will need common tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and an angle grinder.

Installation process

First, you will need to completely remove elements such as the airbag, steering wheel, switches, ignition switch, and finally the steering column along with the bracket and cardan.

Then do everything as follows:

  1. Taking the old bracket-plate, knock out the bolts from it. Then cut off about 30 mm from the top (where 2 bolts are welded and there are 3 holes).
  2. Try the plate on the EUR, if the holes do not match (most likely this will happen), drill them.
  3. Now you need to attach the gimbal to the amplifier.
  4. You need to put washers under the bracket at the point of attachment to the amplifier. They can be of different thicknesses and have a direct impact on future steering adjustments.
  5. Now you can attach the EUR. Insert the cardan onto the rack.

As mentioned above, the washers matter how much the steering column will deviate up and down. They are installed between the bracket and the amplifier. The amount of deflection of the steering column depends on their thickness.

Purpose, advantages and disadvantages of an electric amplifier

The EUR appeared quite recently, much later than the well-known and proven steering wheel. Its task is the same - to facilitate the rotation of the steering wheel, but the operating principle is different.

If in the first case the main function was performed by a special fluid for the power steering, then here the electric drive takes on the role of an “assistant”.

Since its inception, the system has been constantly improved. At the same time, from year to year, the electric power steering takes over the “reins of power” and gradually replaces the power steering.

What are the benefits of electric power steering? There are a few:

  • Setting steering parameters is much easier;
  • the steering wheel responds better to driver movements;
  • the level of reliability has increased. This is due to the fact that the performance of the system no longer depends on the volume and quality of the special fluid;
  • reduction in fuel consumption.

It would seem that there may be a pattern. It's simple. With the advent of the electric drive, less energy was consumed, and accordingly, the “gluttony” of the car decreased by an average of 0.5 liters (per “hundred”).

But, despite its qualities, the EUR also has a number of disadvantages:

  • the generator has limited power, which affects the operation of the entire system. Consequently, installation of an electric motor is only possible on passenger cars. An amplifier of this type is not suitable for trucks or SUVs - it will be ineffective;
  • low information content of the steering wheel (this can be explained by insufficient reverse force). To be honest, the “big brother” - power steering - has a similar drawback.

With the advent of electric power steering, developers have many opportunities to develop more modern systems, for example, automatic parking, stability control systems, and so on.
